debate. there were eight on stage. jon huntsman sat out and you saw people taking off the gloves yesterday and it seemed like a moderator unwilling to break them up. >> anderson cooper missing in action. he really didn't act as much of a moderator. when they really got going, you didn't hear from him. in particular, herman cain got his share of getting beat up. >> right away. right off the top. >> right off the top. that was the first topic and mitt romney as well, his health care plan but the give and take between perry and romney seemed so bitter and so personal, here's a little bit. >> i don't think we have the sound ready quite yet. one of the big lines -- first of all, newly assertive rick perry is what i would say, he came out fighting. rick santorum got into it with mitt romney. they attacked him for his health care plan and brought up the fact that his advisors had met with the white house to basically give them the ground rules of what they did in massachusetts which would not be helpful to mitt romney and there's newt gingrich. he stayed above the fry and at the end of the debate, he said

there's something to be said for not bickering amongst ourselves here and he got applause for that. >> how rick perry got from what are you going to do ensure that 20,000 uninsured in texas to hey, mitt, you used illegal immigrants to mow your lawn, i don't know. let's relive some of it. >> the fact is we have a huge number of illegals that are coming into this country and they're coming into this country because the federal government has failed to secure that border. but they're coming here because there is a magnet. and the magnet is called jobs and those people that hire illegals ought to be penalized and mitt, you lose all of your standing from my perspective because you hired illegals in your home and you knew about it for a year and the idea that you stand before us and talk about that you're strong on immigration is on its face of hypocrisy. >> governor romney? >> rick, i don't think that

nonsequitor. you didn't know it was going to be rick santorum and you didn't know it was going to be newt gingrich and rick pry at once. you knew that herman cain would get hit by 999. they did it in a respectful way. it was interesting to see herman cain not get defensive when defending it. i'm shocked that we bring up the people that he hired to mow his lawn. why is that so serious? >> it's coming back to rick perry has to pull out all the stops. he's down in the polls. latest at 6%. he's fallen off a cliff in the poelt polls. he's got to attack the frontrunner right now. big thing is who is going to create jobs? that's what the election is going to come down to. who is going to create jobs? rick perry has a good record in texas. they went at it again over that. >> if you want to know how someone is going to act in the future look how they act in the past so mitt, while you were the governor of massachusetts in

that period of time, you were 47th in the nation in jobs creation. during that same period of time, we created 20 times more jobs. as a matter of fact, you've created 40,000 jobs total in your four years. last two months, we created more jobs than that in texas. >> i'm proud of the fact that actually during the four years we were both governors, my unemployment rate in massachusetts was lower than your unemployment rate in texas. that's number one. number two, getting it down to 4.7%, i'm pretty happy with. we worked very hard to balance our budget. did every year. put in place the rainy day fund of $2 billion by the time i was finished and i'll tell you this, the american people would be happy for an individual who can lead the country who has created jobs, not just watching them get created by others but someone who knows how the economy works because he's been in it. >> and that was mitt romney letting everybody know he does have the background and now he's leaning heavily on his private sector experience and governor perry doesn't seem to have it. now, i thought it was interesting to see how they went after romneycare in saying he was the precursor to obamacare

and they went back and forth on that. the only time i saw newt gingrich flumux in the last seven debates is on that issue. he said no, i wasn't, it was the heritage foundation. you supported the heritage foundation. that's right. you got me. >> newt who has been very pleasant, noncfrfrontational to the other people on stage throughout the debates, last night, he -- you could tell that he was a little steamed at that interchange and in fact, on his last opportunity to do some soundbiting, he said this. calling out the -- >> let me point out for a second that bickering is probably not the road to the white house. and the technique you've used, maximizes going back and forth over and over again. >> that's right. >> anderson cooper. >> ronald reagan's 11th commandment, thou shall not attack fellow republicans, certainly was not held with any regard last night. and you got to figure the people at the white house are going yeah, more of that, because the

crew. an airline spokesperson says a 29-year-old was yelling at passengers and then turned on the crew during a flight from l.a. to kansas city. the crew made an emergency landing in texas where the f.b.i. took him into custody. no one was hurt. new developments in the case of missing baby lisa irwin. police were search her parents' home for a second time this morning. this time without their permission. authorities say deborah bradley and jeremy irwin are no longer cooperating with the investigation. they've reportedly been told to stay away from their home until police are done with their search. yesterday, a customer reported seeing a baby that looked like lisa at a deli in kansas. it turned out, though, to be a false alarm. sad news about one of the greatest writers in radio, legendary poet and journalist norman corwin passed away at the age of 101. millions of americans tuned in week after week to hear his views on world war ii. his biggest triumph, a poem he wrote marking the end of the war in 1945.

and let's talk, too, about the chances of these 1,027 eventually going back to terror, the stats say 60% will go back to the lives that got them in prison to begin with which is killing. >> i doubt that because many of them spend long time behind bars and the -- most are in gaza strip, not in the west bank. so israel did not have a big problem of releasing a couple of hundred dangerous terrorists to add to the long list of 15,000 terrorists of hamas military wing in gaza strip. the real danger in this situation is the victory of hamas ideology and the violent strategy. >> which you fought against and risked your life for and put your dad in prison to do. now, the role of egypt in this. we know in a baffling way, they actually sat this corporal down for an interview right after

with hamas cards right behind him. what was egypt's role? >> egypt is trying to prove to the arab nation that it's taken the side of the palestinians at this moment because of the unrest in egypt and israel understands these circumstances. there is lots of changes in egypt, in jordan, in syria, and israel had no choice but to bring the soldier back to his family because israel has a bad experience with the case that they never have been able to bring him back home. so israel had to pay this very painful price. there was no other choice. it had to choose between bad and worse, not between bad and good. and i'm glad that the soldier is back and this is -- i need to send a message to my father and other hamas leaders that the

ads that appear next to whatever you come with and the afl-cio is paying google, i think it's $0.10 for every time you click on to one of these ads and if you click on to the ads, you're invited to donate to occupy wall street or sign a petition in support of them. it's brought in a lot of money. "the boston globe" this morning is reporting so far, they've brought in $435,000 from all sources to occupy wall street. they're spending $1500 a day on food. $2,000 on laundry so far and $20,000 on equipment like cameras. that's what they've spent so far. >> aren't they going to have to pay tax on that? >> good question. 999 tax, i don't know. but look, what you've got here is a direct link between big labor and occupy wall street. and then you have a direct link between the democrats and especially president obama to occupy wall street. and as you saw there from that

poll that you were quoting, the poll of the protesters, this is a very dangerous game for labor and the administration to be playing. because you put yourselves firmly on the side of the extreme left. doug shone's poll shows indeed they are way out there on the left. >> one of the stats that he quotes in his article in the "wall street journal" is 30% of the 200 that he polled believe that violence might be a good idea. >> violence is justified, according to 30% of the people polled on those demonstrations. and 2 out of 3 believe that your pension, health care and education should be completely free for everybody no matter what the cost. >> one other particular statistic from him is the fact that while a majority of those at occupy wall street supported president barack obama in voting for him in 2008, a majority of them, i think 51% don't like him. don't want him to have four more

do this. they have to come up with a conclusion. and evidently, they've made almost no progress. and one of the biggest time wasteers, senator john kerry. evidently, he makes speech after speech in aspirational tones where people's eyes glaze over. >> one of the things that a lot of people talked about last night, herman cain's 999 plan. there's a story out this morning, i just saw it on national review on line in their corner blog, it says that steven moore, "the wall street journal" guy who is on this program a lot and on the channel a lot, he helped herman cain with his plan. he realizing now that the 9% sales tax is a nonstarter. what steven moore is suggesting to the cain camp is change that 9% national sales tax to a 9% payroll tax. it would still be lower than what we're paying now. and then you wouldn't have to worry about the national sales tax and we saw all the candidates pile on mr. cain last night on that. will he change his plan? stand by. >> very interesting.

then he might be accused of flip-flopping but if it's for the better, he might do it. >> he's a bold guy. it would be a bold admission that politically that's not going to work is i'm going to change. that's what people want, somebody who can be flexible. >> i'd like you to boldly do what you haven't done in 30 minutes, read the headlines. >> i'll kick it off for us. police in maryland believe they've found the remains of a missing 11-year-old boy. the body believed to be that of william mclean was found in a wooded area. he was last seen two weeks ago. police began searching for the boy after they found his mother beaten and stabbed to death in their germantown home in maryland. people who knew the family are shocked by the news. >> this is breaking my heart, it's breaking my kids -- my kids have done nothing but cry. i took them out of school early today. they're broken. they can't deal right now. neither can i. >> mcquain's stepfather is the prime suspect. he's charged with the murder of his mother. >> meanwhile, the victims who were held prisoner in a philly basement dungeon are speaking out against their captors.

but we can fix it. >> you have a program called the marshall plan charities that you started in 2009. you said what we need to do when the troops leave to make sure they're self-sufficient is provide five things. food, water, education, jobs and health care. how do you plan about going about doing that? >> by using nonprofit organizations. and see, this is not a dream. these nonprofits have been doing this very successfully for about five to seven to 10 years. but they're not funded. and by the virtue of their name, nonprofit, they can do it cheaper, better and faster than anybody else. and they don't -- gretchen, they don't need much. that's the thing. we're in the process of planting soybeans, we clean up the water and the babies who are dying suddenly have less of a death rate than los angeles just from clean water and the children

in 2005 to hold those who impersonate decorated military members accountable and actually give them jail time but now, the supreme court is reviewing the act to see if it's actually unconstitutional. let's ask fox news legal analyst peter johnson jr. what he thinks about the whole thing. >> good morning. this is a very sensitive topic because really in terms of our national history medal of honor recipients are so important, you talk about murphy and johnny balatone in 2002 going up to some of the medal of honor recipients we've heard recently like dakota meyer, these are people that deserve our suspect. but the issue becomes should we lose our first amendment rights in this country? and the supreme court is going to look at the stolen valor act which says if you lie about your military service, if you lie and say you got a medal of honor or purple heart and wounded in the

battle, like my father who was wounded in iwo jima, his birthday is today. happy birthday to him. you can face jail and fines and community service. the circuit court in california said it's not constitutional. it's a violation of your first amendment rights because people do lie in society. and so the logic is if you can be put in jail for lying about your military service, can you be put in jail for lying on your facebook? for lying to match.com, for lying about whether you voted. for lying about what your qualifications for in an election as the man that was prosecuted here was. >> let me ask you this. i can think of two politicians in my mind who also lied about their service. maybe not about receiving medals of honor or the purple heart but how did this act read? was it only if you lied about receiving medals or if you actually lied about your service? >> falsely represents himself to have been decorated in the united states. >> so if you just said that i

positi position. government is having trouble getting us. we have so many programs out there, i voted against them because they don't. we spent tens of billions of dollars in this country trying to figure out how to fix a problem that government produced and there isn't an easy answer. the best answer, i think the best answer of all is we need to create jobs. you look at nevada, we have the highest foreclosure but we also have the highest unemployment. >> right. >> you look at the next state that's second in unemployment, they're probably second in foreclosures. so the ultimate answer for this, we need to create jobs in this country and keep people in their homes. >> no kidding. later today, there in washington, d.c. where you're sitting, senator, the super committee, i think it's going to meet again behind closed doors, all this stuff that's so important with every american going on behind closed doors. you have introduced, there are the super committee members, you have introduced a super committee transparency act, you're worried about, you know, who are they talking to? what sort of dough are they getting from lobbyists and everything else? >> yeah, yeah.

newt gingrich talked about this a little bit last night in the debate and it goes to show you how broken washington, d.c. is. i call it the super secret committee and still back that up but they've only had two public hearings and they've been meeting for six weeks. >> right. >> this is -- this is public information. this is the public's domain. we're talking about taxes. we're talking about spending money. we're telling 500 and what, 20 other members of congress that you can't participate in this process, you can't amend it, you can't speak on it. even when i go talk to a member of the committee they're saying we're making progress. you cannot get any information unless you go and talk it a lobbyist. if you talk to a lobbyist, i can find out what the super committee is doing but i can't go to a member of the super committee and get the details like i could from the lobbiest. i think that's wrong. >> one member said this, it's like we keep going around in circles so i'm not sure what's going on in there but no one is saying they're making much progress which could be very

would you do it? should you do it? >> gretchen: a new bill proposed by president obama would let people withdraw up to 50 thousand dollars or 50% to pay their mortgage. but is it a good idea? let's ask dave ramsey. he's a personal finance expert and author of "entire leadership." so dave that, a good idea? >> well, it's not a good idea. f of course, this is only for those in foreclosure and does not remove the taxes. it just removes the penalty. the penalty is only 10%. you will pay taxes and if you pull $50,000 out, that increases your taxable income, so you'll pay 25% of whatever you pull out, or 35% of whatever you pull out in taxes. so it should be an absolute last resort. you know you're going to pay taxes on the money and probably try to sell the house if you can. again, if you're under water or this is the only way you can save your house, then yes, it will be a good thing for you. >> steve: last resort. we got a couple of e-mails for you. greg from hawaii has e-mailed us and said, i plan on retire not guilty two years, although

living in hawaii would be fantastic all the time. should i put my extra money towards my investment or toward paying off my mortgage? >> we recommend steadily and consistently putting 15% of your household income into retirement. anything above that that you can do towards your mortgage. so any found money, any bonuses, inheritance above 15% in your budget, throw that toward your mortgage. so the answer is some of both. >> brian: here is don from texas. he says, we moved to a new city two years ago and bought a new house. we are renting our old home but losing money each month. the house is worth less than we owe. should we try the short sale the home or hold on to it? >> a short sale is just to the left of foreclosure. it basically destroys your credit and you may or may not get sued for the difference in a short sale, depending how you negotiate it. so a short sale is a last resort, just short of foreclosure. it's not like oh, this hurts and is inconvenient, i'm going to drop this house.

>> brian: sabato's crystal ball. a new poll shows the majority of likely republican presidential primary voters would pick a candidate who alone with their values over one who has the best chance of beating president obama. so could this cost the gop? the white house in 2012 and what candidate now steps up front and center because of this? the director for the center for politics at the university of virginia, dr. larry sabato. if they want somebody who mostly aligns with their values, who are they looking at then? >> well, you could go through the candidates and pick out the purer ones, brian, but look, that's what people always say in answer to a polling question like that. it's just natural to say i'm going to support someone i agree with. that's why this is such a long process. people move through various stages and they come to terms with that old bug called electability because in the end, they want to win. that's what american politics is

about, winning. >> brian: but you do say a lot of republicans would have a problem nominating a moderate and you say many republicans feel burned by senator john mccain. >> absolutely. they don't look back fondly on 2008 for lots of reasons. if mccain had somehow won, they would have perhaps had a more positive feeling about him and about that campaign. so winning is the center of the universe. it's the sun of the political solar system. >> brian: perry you don't think is out of it. even after last night's debate, you think perry still is viable? he's got the money. >> brian, there are 15 million reasons why he's not out of it. those are the number of dollars he has banked. that's a lot of money for a primary campaign. he's governor of texas. we all know it's a very wealthy state. he can double that amount of money by the time we finally get around to figuring out when this primary process starts. so of course you don't rule him

out. obviously romney and cain are the two people at the top of the heap right now, but i think perry is the one with the potential to come back. >> brian: right. and perry has evidently staffers in every single county of new hampshire, in two months his infrastructure is being set up. up like herman cain has more momentum, but less people. i think he has six people in iowa and less than that in new hampshire. you believe the general lectorate is behind this. they don't think herman cain can get elected. right? >> the political community on the republican side believes that as we go through the distance, that cain will probably fade. that's based on the theory that in the end, money and organization matters, particular low in iowa, but also new hampshire, the other early primary states. this is the most unconventional campaign of the year. we'll be reading about it for years. it's interesting to watch, but it's tough to beat the conventional wisdom and the

conventional wisdom usually triumphs in the end. >> brian: george will and people like charles krauthammer, respected republican voices and leaders who just won't buy into herman cain, no matter what week you turn in or what momentum he may have, they don't want to do it. >> well, they see his description of 9-9-9 and they think, as in the debate last night, his defense of it is vague. they're worried p him in a debate situation with president obama and cain has his strong supporters, but he clearly is developing a cadre of detractors. you saw that at the debate. he really got pummeled. >> brian: you thought herman cain got pummeled? >> absolutely. cain got pummeled, romney, perry got pummeled. it was a mixed up kind of debate. everybody took their licks and there were video clips created that will be used in tv ads against all the candidates. >> brian: right. so a lot happened negative while they mixed it up yesterday for another network.

you've got to live your life as well. you can't stay inside all day every day. >> steve: you can't. i know that you don't currently own that bra, but that would be a nice thing for your husband to buy you. >> wouldn't it? >> steve: would you want to keep it around the house? >> of course. who wouldn't? >> gretchen: earlier we were seeing shots of you in a different bra, video of you and how gorgeous your figure is after having a baby. do you have any tips to share? >> i basically have been practicing yoga for over ten years and i love it. i eat super healthy and i take care of myself from the inside out. but i don't believe in depriving yourself. if you want to eat sometimes be a bit naughty, then go ahead. >> gretchen: right. i like that! >> 80% healthy. 20% indulgent. that's the rule i follow. >> brian: when you do yoga, i think it's hot yoga. that's what i say. listen, it works. steve, you should try that. steve, you look young. what are some of your secrets, 'cause it's your birthday today.
