>> exactly. >> greta: love your state fair. >> you are interested in political history. i'm going to give you a little political history from my perspective in the arizona state fair. it was back in 1958 when i lived here. i grew up here in arizona. i was with my wonderful mother who is hopefully watching tonight, because i'm mentioning her in a very good set. took me to the arizona state fair to pass out barry goldwater literature when he was running for the united states senate against earnest mcfarland. that was my first political event in my life. >> greta: what a difference it makes. >> exactly. >> greta: who would guess you would be vice president and be back here. >> be back at the arizona state fair. when i knew you were going to be here and you invited me i said absolutely i want to come see greta and help fox and come back to the arizona state fair. >> greta: great to see you. a lot going on in the world today your thoughts. qaddafi is dead.

how does that change things? >> i don't think it's going to change things much immediately. the focus right now is, you know, who is going to succeed qaddafi. this transitional government there we really don't know who the leader a lot of fighting. jocking for positions. the radicals and al qaeda and those supporters will try to move in to have a lot of say in this next government. we don't know how it's going to turn out that was one of the big questions everyone had. okay, fine, let's get rid of qaddafi. what succeeds qaddafi? we don't really know. it's good that he is gone. he was a tyrant obama administration. much different type of war effort if you will. it was nato-led, obviously the united states is basically nato.

we have the partners there. we make the major contributions. we weren't the leaders it was more of a european initiative. and we helped more -- most of the stories were probably -- former secretary of defense bob gates pointed out, this was not in our vital national security interest. but we did support the effort. it worked out. and i think we're all glad that qaddafi is gone. now the hard work begins. who succeeds him. what kind of a government are we going to have? is it going to be pro-west? early indications are that it could be. we don't know. we won't know for a year. >> sort of interesting. we all watch things on the outside. we wonder how leaders learn about it. we have a clip here of secretary of state hillary clinton. i think she is in afghanistan. let's listen to this. this is how she found out that qaddafi was dead. >> wow.

unconfirmed. unconfirmed reports about qaddafi being captured. unconfirmed. yeah. we have had too many -- we have had a bunch of those before. we have had -- you know, have had him captured a number of times. >> greta: funny youtube times we all got cameras and we could see the behind the scenes. here is ourselves hearing this important news and even she is, wow. >> this is the first time i had seen that clip. i had heard about that she received it over a blackberry or a text message. do you know it reminds me the first reaction i had, it reminds me when george bush was informed about the world trade center coming down. he is at a school, andy card comes in, whispers in his ear and he saw the reaction, wasn't quite certain what it was. kept going. then they called him out. the reaction is similar. >> greta: you never, you know,

we watch our leaders. and we forget that they plan to have a day particular way and then they are very much surprised about what may unravel. it really is the job of being a leader is so fluid and you have got to be quick and ready. >> it's very difficult to establish the agenda because 24 hours ago they did not know the agenda was going to be libya and qaddafi. today it's all libya it's all qaddafi. who is going to succeed qaddafi. but when you are president of the united states. when you get up in the morning. you think you know what you are going to do. you don't. because world events change. world events happen. and you have to respond. >> greta: okay. you watching the 2012 race? >> oh, absolutely. with great interest. >> greta: tell me, what do you make of the -- at least everyone is talking about a little bit of a blood bath or so it appears to me outside between governor perry and governor romney? >> what i think needs to happen now is that they need to have probably fewer candidates on the

stage. they have all had their turn. they need to whittle that down, get the top three or four there and let them have a more substantive debate. i didn't particularly like two nights ago the debate in las vegas. can i see the personal tension, the animosity between the various candidates really rise to the surface. it was not, you know, it was entertaining, i guess. but i particularly did not enjoy it i think we have got to get over the bickering. the unfortunate aspect from my perspective and all those that want to see barack obama defeated is that barack obama, president obama should have been the center of attention. he should have been on the stage that night. he wasn't. they spent too much time fighting amongst each other. so i think it's probably time to whittle this down. i don't know when the next debate is get the top three or four and hopefully they have a more serious substantive discussion so the voters will be able to see where the voters

really stand on the issue. discussing the lawn service for three or four or five minutes is really ridiculous. >> greta: how about mr. cain? he seems to be surging. it's interesting to watch how is he doing in the polls. >> he is the real deal. i have known herman for a number of years when i was on speaking tour right after i was out of office. i would run into him periodically. he is a very good speaker. is he a good businessman. he has a big heart. i think he is very smart. he doesn't have a lot of political experience. get get does that matter? >> political experience? >> greta: yes. >> yes, it does. you will see that as time comes on. he may be very good. very quick. you have to have political experience to really got length. but, he is the real deal. he is a good man. he is somebody that i have been friends with for quite some time. but, yes, political experience does matter. >> greta: you know, when you look at president obama coming up, he didn't have a lot of

political experience. he had been a senator for a short period of time. did he have political experience. >> he had political experience. he was a state senator for four years. a u.s. senator for four years. he had run for election against bobby rush and lost congress. so he had been in the arena so to speak. herman cain has never been in the arena for this. i talked to him, you know, i don't know, seven or eight months ago. you need to go raise a lot of money or win one of these straw polls to get in that top tier. he hasn't raise that much money but did he win one of those straw polls and right now he is in the top tier. but he has never run for office before. people like are you going to be asking a lot of questions. political experience something that is very important. that doesn't mean is he not going to be able to handle it but we'll wait and see. but he is a good man. >> greta: how about that 999? have you thought about that. >> i thought a little bit about it a great slogan.

people understand it. but the 9% sales tax without a constitutional amendment to eliminate the income tax in my book doesn't really work. it's a way to raise a lot of revenue. 9% this time. 12% the next time. >> greta: so you don't trust congress, basically in terms of the sales tax? >> no. i would consider only consider a value-added tax. sales tax. that's what his is if it goes along with a constitutional amendment that repeels the income tax. because otherwise congress will throw the income tax back on there and it will go up and the sales tax will go up. and it will just be, you know, government will be bigger and harder to shrink it. >> greta: all right. we can't leave this discussion without talking about the congressman. are you proud of the congressman from this area? >> my son ben quayle? he is doing a great job, working hard for the constituents, enjoying it. i think he is one of the leaders from what i have been told by

others freshman class. >> greta: fun for you? >> it's fun to observe. i would like to give him advice a little bit more but he knows what he is doing. every once in a while i suggest things and sometimes he just, you know, goes about his own way. but that's the way it should be. he doesn't ask for a lot of advice. >> greta: fun for you. nice to see you mr. vice president. thank you, sir. >> always a pleasure. >> greta: now to the food, rides, and the livestock. ever go to the state -- arizona state fair. griff jenkins is out in the middle of it. >> did you or vice president quayle know that the fair started before arizona was a state. the state will be 100 years old next year. and this fair is 127 years old you know, whether it's the rides or the games. i'm just going to ask isabella, what's your favorite thing about the fair. >> obviously the food. >> the food. what's your name? what's your favorite thing?

earlier tonight. >> i have. it's been fabulous. >> what have you seen. >> beautiful weather. i went to the exhibit hall. i went to the funnel cake place. i have been to imagine get sandwiches. >> greta: that's disgusting. i have actually -- griff jenkins is talking about the maggots. people eat those. >> i have no idea. i certainly wouldn't indulge. >> greta: pretty disgusting. lots going on in this state. illegal immigration. this has been a hot bed of that discussion. what's been the lawsuit. federal government still trying to shut you done on that. >> they have been successful so far? >> bottom line is we have fought with the supreme court. they asked for 30 day suspension. they asked for another 30 day extension to answer. we agreed. so we hope to hear from the supreme court probably around maybe the 10th of november, the middle of november. to see if, in fact, they are going to hear it or not. >> greta: we have the illegal immigration as an issue here. you have also got on enormous

amount of foreclosures. what's going on with the housing here? really bleak. what could the federal government do to help you? >> the bottom line is that arizona's economy was basically built on housing. and we have had a horrible situation that has affected our economy here. and we just are hoping that with my competitive package and jobs package that we can get more jobs and bring in people to establish those jobs for those people that need it. therefore, they aren't going to be able to pay their mortgages. it's been a disaster. of course, i would be remiss if i didn't talk about the federal government. they haven't been much help. >> greta: you are not a big fan of the federal government. >> no i am not. >> greta: are you a big fan of the president? >> >> done. what he promised he would do. he has done nothing but keep talking about his jobs program

spending and taxing. spending and taxing. it's not a jobs program. we need to make it easier to do business in america and certainly in the state of arizona. and it's those people that create the jobs that he wants to tax to death. so, i'm hoping that come from november next we're we have a change of residence not change of residence but person living in the great residence. >> greta: i take it you are following 2012. when do you intend to endorse? >> i'm going to wait maybe for mother month. we have a big debate here. i'm going to look and see what they are going to discuss and if they have got better solutions than what i have heard so far, i think we have a wonderful bench of people that are running. they all understand the issue. i think that they -- the issues that we are facing and arizona has been on the forefront of so many of these. the economy, jobs, health care, illegal immigration. you know, that seems to be the flash point in all the

discussions. >> greta: the different idea on the idea of illegal immigration. i imagine that arizona is sort of watching very carefully. that particular issue. there does seem to be a difference among those candidates. >> well, i think america is watching. i think everybody understands the issue that we're facing and it's not only impacting arizona we gateway. we want our borders secure. i think america wants the borders secure. it's as simple as that we are grateful for the little visit the federal government has done. bottom line is our two border is still open and we still are having people come across and we are the recipients of the drugs and cartels and the crime and, you know, and we are the gateway. so, from arizona it goes to wisconsin. >> you mention a little while ago, you have a surplus. >> how would that happen? cut and hurt. >> bottom line, let me first say arizona had the worst budget deficit in the state, in the country per capita.

so we were really really really hurting. we came forward and did a plan a competitive package. we cut the budget and cut almost $4 billion out of 8-million-dollar budget. that's a whole lot of money. then we went forward and established a new authority and encouraged other businesses to come here and we planned and did it the right way. we are very, very grateful. we had to borrow a little money. i'm hoping that with the sur surplus that we can hang on to that and pay off a little bit of our debt. we do have a surplus. about $500 million. we're proud of that. took us great effort not only with the people of arizona understanding but the legislature moving forward and team effort. >> greta: still 9.3 unemployment rate still above the national average. very tough. >> it is tough. arizona son the come back. i have a plan. if we follow that plan, i really believe that we will probably lead the nation in recovery i'm hoping so. >> greta: governor, nice to see you. love your state fair. a lot of people having a lot of

>> greta: lots of tough issues facing our nation. one is the border, particularly critical issue right here in arizona. griff jenkins went to the arizona/mexico border with the arizona border patrol. >> the u.s. border patrol's tucson sector, the busiest in the nation has 262 miles along the southern border. within that sector, this anointed division has 26 miles, the most difficult terrain to patrol given the mountain range they have to go to. operation supervisor takes us for a ride. >> anyone we encounter out here is unlikely illegal alien or somebody up to no good. transporting any type of drug. it is extremely rugged. it is something that the

narcotic smugglers and alien smugglers like to use because there is no route to get into the mountain safely. >> we use quite a few unattended ground sensors in key locations throughout this entire area to give us an indication of the routes that they are taking. and along our agents listen to these censors and to get a point where they can make interdiction. >> agent, this is not the typical look that people see when you think of border patrol you think the fence, the flat dirt road. this is a different perspective. >> absolutely. the san rafael valley is flanked by two mountain ranges we are currently in the mountain rake which is just off to our east which is favored really by a lot of the alien smuggling groups and narcotic smuggling groups. they tend to stay away from the flat line areas because they do come into almost immediate visual range of our remote video surveillance systems that we have employed all throughout the san rafael valley. >> what are the chances that the

smugglers, the drug runners have surveillance points on the u.s. side to watch you guys? >> the high peaks do offer great vantage points for them to establish lookout points. we are being looked at right now. i have no doubt as we were coming into this area we were called out by the guides that are up on the mountain ranges. the rip crews that are operating in these areas are targeting smuggling organizations. they are not necessarily targeting law enforcement. basically smuggler against smuggler. [speaking spanish] >> what's he say? >> i was asking him if he had seen any recent traffic, any of the transit he could probably pass on. >> is he relating to us it's actually been really quiet. from time to time he does see some vehicles that he doesn't recognize. very similar to this one probably this one driving by right now. >> you think perhaps the vehicle driving by was scouting us. >> absolutely.

coming out and look at what type of deployment parents we have today. see if they can find weakness. get on the radio and let them know we have scouting activity in this area and see if we can adjust to it. >> agent, what's happening now is two scouts are working together. clearly know each other. they are trying to help each other get out of here. >> exactly. >> our presence. not just our crew but we have had multiple -- coming down. >> exactly. we have got -- we know that the scouts are up high in situations like today where it has been a little bit quiet and we know that the scouts up on the hillsides are watching our every movement. our mountain team when they were first deployed up on top went to some of the known areas where the scouts normally hide. we got lucky enough to bump into one of them. he saw the movement. he immediately started running off the mountain. >> greta: update to griff's support the border patrol later

caught the scout you just saw them tracking. now, commander jeff stout of the arizona joint field command joined us. good evening, commander. >> good evening. >> it looks spectacular. those views we just saw in griff's package. is it easy to patrol that area? >> no, ma'am. it's very difficult, greta. that's one of our greatest challenges right there is the fact that the vast different terrain features in the tucson sector makes it difficult to form operational response. >> what do you need? if you had a wish list and money weren't an issue, what do you need? >> well, what we need is what we actually have in the pipeline. we're getting additional helicopters. we're getting additional manpower. infrastructure and technology. we really have a good story to tell for what's coming to -- some of the successes that we have seen in fy 11. >> greta: in terms of the problems with the border, human trafficking, is that an issue? >> yes, it is. >> greta: what do you see? give me an example of it.

>> and i can tell you that we have increased our prosecution of human traffickers fy 11 over fy 10. we have operators operating heavily in the west desert of the tucson sector. and they are bringing what they call human beings from the west desert up the areas tucson to phoenix. bringing them in to the interior. >> greta: have drugs? >> oh yes, absolutely. >> greta: how bad is it? >> drug trafficking, we have actually saw decrease by 1% this year. but as we get better at what we're doing and decrease in the flow of illegal immigrants coming across, we have been able to concentrate more heavily on the drug flow. we have been able to get on the hill tops. take scouts off. seize the weapons. seize their radios. seize drugs and vehicles that they are using to bring it in to the united states.

>> greta: let's say like a two-year period, since two years ago until now, are you ahead of the game drugs and human trafficking increasing at a greater rate than you guys can keep up with? >> no. we have had vast improvements over the last 10 years. you look back at 2000 tucson sector. apprehended 216,000 immigrants. you have look at it as it pertains to 2010, it was 212,000. and then this year fy 11 we apprehended 123,000. so, we have less of the clutter coming through enabled us to focus on the things that do more harm to our people here in the united states less urgent problem than previously described to me. saying nightmare and they are scared and worse. you seem to have very different theory. >> i have the perspective of

knowing what has happened and what our plans are. my point i have never seen arizona look better. next year can i tell that you we have had advances over the previous year. we have a lot of technology infrastructure and personnel coming on board. we are finding our operations to the tactics and techniques of the drug smugglers. and we are having an impact. that's not to say that we don't have challenges but we recognize those challenges. we are prepared to confront them. we have got a lot of good hard-working men and women out there doing that job. >> greta: what's your biggest nightmare on the job? >> biggest nightmare on the job? >> greta: yeah. >> is actually dealing with the politics. had kids stomp on it wrote all kinds of writings on it. absolutely outraged. that's the guy that started this recall. an olenski trained community organizer. and he is offended not because i haven't done what i said. he is offended because i have been successful across the nation. >> greta: recall election is coming up in a couple of weeks. how are you doing? >> it's hard because there is no primary. i poll very strong among republicans and independence. this is a democrat. only two republicans in the race. one is democrat endorsed and they are going around the primary so it's a general nonpartisan, very difficult to measure because in a primary i think i would win handedly and always have. 16 and on in my district. born and raised here. my neighbors know me. i have kept every promise i have made. we have been successful about securing our border, enforcing our laws and the nation has followed. we changed the debate in washington, d.c. >> greta: all right. speaking of washington, d.c. who is your favorite candidate for president right now?

>> well, got to be careful because i have got to tell you i love two or three of them greatly. and i'm not -- i love herman cain just came here last week. rocked the house. michele bachmann came down and had a round table with her on border security. and what a great lady. i have got lots of friends supporting mitt romney who i think is a wonderful man. it's a tough issue. and eventually i will make a decision on who. i happen to -- herman cain was fun. kind of reminded me of ronald reagan. he said everything i would love to hear a candidate say. i was extremely impressed. >> greta: so. does that mean do i take away sort of leaning toward mr. herman cain? >> well, again, the jury is still out there. is a lot to be done. again, these debates take place, things change. things are said. so i'm looking for -- i'm looking for ronald reagan. i'm looking for a guy that makes me feel good about america. that has the values, the ronald
