>> oh! >> i'll leave it when i talk to lionel richie. let's talk about what the president has to do. by a 2-1 margin in the last election in 2008, he outdistanced john mccain in terms of the youth group. this time, he finds himself with 40% approval. 54% disapproval and hence, he's got a game plan to win the youth vote back. >> yeah. >> is he buying their vote? to some, it sure looks like it because yesterday, he announced in colorado his plan so that students could refinance, essentially, their student debt. here he is a little bit -- the president of the united states talking about how gigantic this $1 trillion bill is hanging over people who owe student loans. >> now, living with that kind of debt means making some pretty tough choices when you're first starting out. it might mean putting off buying a house. it might mean you can't start a business idea that you've got. it may mean that you've got to
3:04 am
wait longer to start a family or certainly it means you're putting off saving for retirement because you're still paying off your student loans. >> by paying less, then, the president rationalizes, then that would effectively be a student stimulus. be able to inject more of their money into the economy. >> let's take a look at an analogy, an example of how this would work for a fictitious person. let's say you borrow $212,000 for a four year college education. then you would repay $28,220 on that. this is based on the fact, you have to keep in mind what this person actually will earn when they go to the real world. that has something to do with it. if you only have to repay $28,220 of those loans. who makes up the difference? bottom line is the taxpayer does and you can do the math there, the difference between $212,000 and $28,000 is a lot of money for the taxpayers to make up. i actually think this plan is not only trying to court the

young people but trying to court the parents of the young people who may in fact be helping out these young people with their student loans down the road as well. >> it could and the interest rate is not low for the student loans. maybe you could work on that. i think that would be a little bit more practical and the other thing to keep in mind, too, there's the things called banks that lent them that. they are based on getting paid back so who is going to say to the banks, this is how we're going to make it up to you. i guess we are to a certain degree. the president brought up yesterday, too, you haven't paid that loan back in 25 years. now it's down to 20 years. could be just big waiting game. >> we're just on the hook for even more. here's what the president did mention is this only will work for direct student loans. these are loans that students got directly from the federal government. if you got them from a bank or a third party, this does nothing for you. brian, you mentioned that the student loan interest rate is high. you're absolutely right.
3:06 am
according to one news source this morning it's 6.8% for students. here's the thing, there's a congressman from gretchen's home state of minnesota, john klein, a republican, he says that while students pay back 6.8%, it only costs the federal government about -- less than 1% so he calls this a gigantic slush fund that the federal government can then spend any way they want. >> very interesting. so is that student loan stimulus just more of the class warfare argument that some say that the president is doing? congressman paul ryan says he's disappointed in the president that he had hoped for. >> i don't enjoy doing this because he gave us a message of hope three years ago of uniting and not dividing and what we're getting are class warfare. we're getting very polarizing rhetoric that puts class against class, pits people against one another and i would simply say sowing social unrest does not make america stronger but makes

newt gingrich. >> we were talking about that on the show. the more debates that newt gingrich does, my assessment is the better he'll continue to do in the polls because he's a smart guy. now, whether or not he can make up the difference for other reasons why people have not put him at the top of the polls up until this point, i think we'll continue to see him rise. the interesting thing about that was rick perry was still in fourth place. now, was this taken before or after he announced his plan? this week so people knew about his flat tax plan when they put in their votes on this poll. >> this quote from newt, i said the odds are pretty good i'll be the nominee. so he quadrupled and got his 12%. >> he's hiring more people, you know, as opposed to some campaigns that are skimming people away, he's hiring more people in new hampshire, south carolina, i believe, and iowa. so somebody sees something going on with the newt gingrich campaign. >> meanwhile, mitt romney is apparently leading in the first four states that have caucuses and also primaries as well. gretch, you said that the more

that newt gingrich shows up at the debates, the better he does. absolutely, meanwhile, somebody who is going to take a contrary view to that is governor rick perry. apparently, according to his communications director, you know he hasn't done so well at some of the debates and so while he will do the next one in michigan, he is probably going to skip a number of the next -- what are there about 300 left? he's going to skip a bunch of them probably to prepare for the early state. >> i think it's pretty bold. remember, you had a situation where governor huntsman missed the last debate. nobody is making a big deal about that. >> he wasn't in the top 10. >> governor perry knows he struggles in these debates and knows he had a 15 point lead before the debate started. >> that is a big risk. because some people are going to ask this question -- if you can't debate the other republican candidates, how are you going to go up against president obama? that's going to be the big question that i think a lot of people are going to ask in their
3:10 am
mind. second question is should we have all these debates? should these candidates be flying all over the country and doing all these debates instead of canvassing the areas in which these votes first opened like iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, etc. >> i love all the debates because they really made a big difference. people have a great idea about what jon huntsman stands for and what all of them as well. what's interesting about rick perry is and maybe one of the reasons he thinks he can do this is historically down in texas, he has ducked the debates and yet, he has been elected governor in the state of texas so for him, it's worked. >> i think for americans, we like the debates. six million watched. >> what are you talking about? >> for candidates, i think they'd prefer not to debate because there's a lot to risk. i was astounded to see not only is mitt romney winning in the first four states, even in iowa where he barely goes, he's on top. >> straight ahead on our show, a stunning confession from ruth madoff, bernie madoff's wife. >> i don't know whose idea it was. but we decided to kill ourselves.

3:17 am
we did that, brian, at the expense of modernizing the air force, modernizing the navy and the army and the marine corps have not had major -- major new equipment in years and the equipment that they have which they've used in these wars for 10 years has got to be reset and rehabilitated. all of that costs money. and the department actually needs more money, not less money and that's the secret in the story that nobody wants to hear. >> well, listen to barney frank. he doesn't exactly have a sympathetic ear to the department of defense. let's listen. >> we're the enforcers of stability in the world. no, we shouldn't be. we can't be. it doesn't do any good. if you don't cut the military, then you cut medicare or you cut social security. remember, we're in a zero sum situation. >> but in times of war, everyone is going to expect the defense to do the -- the department of defense to do absolutely everything and our war machine to come out victorious.

so they're apparently part of it. although they deny any paying of the homeless or any other untoward fundraising activities for which a story on foxnews.com -- >> gretchen: here is what that story says. it says that acorn is now operating under a different name, new york communities for change, or at least some of their people are with that organization. and that they're organizing, quote, guerrilla protests and hiring door to door canvassers to collect money under the banner of various causes while spending it on the protests. from a legal point of view what, does this say to you? >> from a legal point of view, this thing seems to have gotten out of control and a -- in a lot of respects. we have the right to free speech. but when you see protesters holding signs that say, kill the pigs. or arrest the police, the nypd protects and serves the rich. when you see sentiments that are anti-semitic in nature and then you see that the class warfare
5:48 am
has really gone to hell, the 1% now seem to be the protesters that occupy wall street in lower manhattan because they decided now -- you see a story in the new york post -- workers revolt, anti-rich volunteers fed up with homeless. they're throwing the homeless out of the park who come to eat the chicken and the organic rice and all these wonderful goodies that they are spending their half million dollars on. >> gretchen: i don't need to -- mean to laugh. >> but they're saying, listen, we're the 1% now. you 99% homeless, get the heck out of the park. so it seems to be a terrible disconnect, in my mind. so now the occupy wall street folks that are not pursuing employment, not pursuing job, that marched through manhattan last night. you had hundreds of police officers and helicopters in the air and they broke off into the street, they're saying to the homeless, don't eat our food. don't stay with us. >> gretchen: it's a little disingenuous. the other thing we might get
5:49 am
into on another time is what kind of special services are the regular people, taxpayers losing out because the police are all down there doing all this overtime? >> billions of dollars. >> gretchen: we'll tackle that tomorrow. good to see you. you heard the dogs behind me there. halloween not just for the kids. we'll check out the top costumes for cats and pups. it's coming up next. first, let's check in with martha for what's on. do you have a dog or cat? >> no, not yet. i'm like you. i'm waiting 'til the kids are ready to help me take care of the dog. >> gretchen: last night i got the full court press. what's coming up? >> thanks. so here is the question: how super is this super committee? we're about to find out. reports say the senate democrats are offering a twice the cuts needed. jeb hensarling is the lead republican on that committee and will tell us what's going on. and rick perry tries to wrestle back tea party support from herman cain. bill and i join you at the top of the hour. lots going on. we'll see you then. úy

say. if you're going to put one on, make sure it's not restricttive. >> exactly. make sure the animal is comfortable. have them wear it for a few days before halloween and give them food. >> brian: what is this? it's a bee? >> this is a bumble bee. a beagle mix dressed up as a bumble bee. we've got a pumpkin and probably one of the cutest ones is from the martha stewart pets program, which is the witch. >> gretchen: i see that dog doesn't like the hat part of the costume. >> i think we can get rid of the hat. >> gretchen: what are the other tips you have? this is a great one, find costumes that have velcro straps because the tieget in their fur and can be a problem. >> yes. and the velcro is more adjustable, which means obviously you can get a costume that can be fitted appropriately for your pet. probably the most important thing i would say in regards to having your pets enjoy halloween with you is to make sure you consider the fact that no matter how well socialized your animal
5:55 am
is, odds are when they see people wearing costume, they're probably going to be a little spooked. go to pet parties. >> gretchen: they shouldn't go to the door with you when trick or treaters come? >> probably not. if you think they're calm at the front door, if you feel they're going to be okay with having visitors and strangers come to the door, at least put a baby gate up. >> brian: for human beings, don't wear that lady gaga meat dress. >> steve: that is not a good costume. >> brian: we want to get all these dogs homes. we want to get this beagle mix a home, and the rest. what is that supposed to be? >> a dragon costume. >> brian: oh, a dragon. >> steve: one of the things -- so you're out with your dogs and all those treats. don't give the dog a treat. a dog treat. >> give them except appropriate treats. be most careful of chocolate and also you need to be really careful of raisins and grapes.
5:56 am
>> steve: can that really kill a dog? >> it can. it takes a decent quantity of it, but it depends on the size of your dog, so be extra cautious. >> gretchen: keep them out of the snickers bars. >> brian: you want to adopt a dog? go to our web site. we'll find out. >> steve: stay tuned. they'll be in the after the show show. we roll on, live from new york in two minutes. look how excited he is.
