and this is war so the video you're about to see will be tough to watch. bodies and debris in the streets of kabul after a militant fighter drove a van right into an n.a.t.o. convoy, packed with 1500 pounds of explosives. an armored bus hit bursting into a wall of flame and first responders driving straight into the chaos to help and an n.a.t.o. helicopter setting down, airlifting survivors from the fiery scene. in addition to the american soldiers and n.a.t.o. civilians killed, three afghan civilians and one police officer also killed in the attack according to the afghan interior ministry and our connor powell streaming live from kabul with the latest on this, connor? >> the u.s. military commanders here in kabul insisted violence is on the way down here, across the country, but a string of high profile attacks from the taliban, from shooting down on american military helicopters, that killed 30 u.s. troops,

and a 20 hour attack has seemed to contradict that notion that violence is on the way down and another large scale attack, a sort of spectacular attack here in kabul also seems to contradict u.s. military commanders that violence is decreasing in afghanistan. this was a massive attack in southern parts of kabul. 17 people were killed including four afghans, 12 americans and one canadian. of the americans killed many of them were civilian contractors working with the u.s. military to help rebuild afghanistan. and the attack came earlier today on a part of the highway in southern kabul that is part of the huge redevelopment of kabul. there's the brand new road with street lights and a lot of development in that area, but it's an area where the taliban have attacked u.s. convoys in the past. and the taliban have reported to key on military targets like convoys, and also, government officials, afghan government officials here to try to create these

spectacular attacks and this attack is a real stern reminder that the taliban can still strike with deadly consequences and the afghan security forces taking over responsibility aren't fully capable and prepared to handle ought of the responsibilities as u.s. troops are continuing to drawdown in afghanistan and there is concern when will the afghan security forces be ready, harris, with attacks, they're not ready yet and who knows when ethel be ready, harris. >> there are pretty harsh realities and we have been reporting of course by the end of the year, the battle field will look different with a reported 10,000 soldiers expected to leave afghanistan. are you seeing any signs of that already happening? >> there are some signs. already, three or 4,000 american troops are beginning to leave. the commanders said the first troops to leave will be those part of the construction of military bases there at the port and the administration

roles. they were not combat troops, but yesterday, the top, the number two military commander here said some troops are going to be able to leave kandahar in the coming days and replaced by afghan troops which the u.s. military says that for every troop that's leaving on the american and international side, there are dozens of american, i'm sorry, afghan troops taking the spot and the growth of the afghan security forces, by end of december, we will see 10,000 american troops having left afghanistan and the overall footprint in hopes there will not be fewer american targets in on the ground in afghanistan. >> connor powell streaming live from afghanistan, thank you very much. >> fox news is america's election headquarters and a prediction of victory from one of the candidates seeking the g.o.p. nomination from the white house. former businessman herman cain saying on camera, he will win south carolina.

these various states over a year ago. so we feel very good about south carolina. >> it's a bold prediction, but his strongest support may come from southern states. his campaign bus has been making the way through alabama throughout the course of the weekend and he won a big straw poll there today with nearly 51% of the vote. now, to break down beyond that, was pretty telling. ron paul came in second with 45%, he usually does well in straw polls. every other candidate, that includes rick perry, mitt romney, ended up splitting the remaining four to five percent. >> well, doug, i crisscrossed the state of tennessee with herman cain on that campaign bus and covering him behind the scenes and told me himself that something would eventually happen that's happening now and that that money would roll into his campaign. how much? >> look, buses like that aren't cheap either so he needs some money, he's just swimming in cash now apparently and this is based on projections that his

press. >> reporter: december 8th it's holder's turn to testify in front of the house judiciary committee. that's more than a month away. as of now, eight members of congress called for him to quit, all republicans, joe walsh, quote, i ask that the attorney general resign immediately and take responsibility for implicating the united states as accessory to the violent crimes committed by these mexican cartels and for the role he played in the subsequent coverup of the failed fast and furious operation. if he fails to do so, i would ask that president obama dismiss him immediately. now, president obama has had the chance to dismiss his attorney general, but he hasn't. in fact, he is he' backed holder up saying he has the full confidence and that he thinks that holder will be able to figure out who messed up fast and furious. the republican lawmakers are not so sure, in addition to calls for holder to step down. one congressman, lamar submit, wants to bring in a counsel to figure out if his attorney

bottom of the hour, time for the top of the news, in afghanistan, coalition forces hit with the deadliest single ground attack since the war began a decade ago. a bomber driving into an n.a.t.o. convoy, killing 17 people in kabul. most of them american. the taliban claiming responsibility there. and a confident herman cain predicting a victory in south carolina. and the businessman from georgia says with the news cameras rolling, he will win that state's republican primary and cain says that victory will then set the stage for him to win the g.o.p. nomination. >> and now, to our breaking news story on the weather that we're following closely. the governors of new york and new jersey, declaring states of emergency. that's where we began tonight. a rare october nor'easter causing a big mess up and down the east coast. governor chris christie urging people to stay off the roads and saying two of the new jersey's hospitals are running

off generators at this hour and the storm is not over, some of the heaviest snow is on the way. maria molina, meteorologist, from the weather center. and breaking records. >> we have broken records, specifically us here in new york city, central park, it's officially the snowiest october on record for us, the previous record in 1925. we had .8 inches and 2 become today. we saw 1.3 inches of snow and we see more snow after that and continuing to he see it throughout the nighttime into the overnight hours and that's something that we're going to keep an eye on and could be looking at about half a foot of snow for us here in new york city and very significant for the month of october and we did not break any records in philadelphia or d.c. and boston, i think you guys could be breaking a record as we appreciate the four to six inch flesh hold we're getting to see in that city tomorrow morning.

something we'll keep tracking. otherwise the low pressure system is intensifying and will do so into the overnight hours and the wind will be another issue, along coastal area and 50 to 60 miles per hour, and long island, cape cod where it's raining right now. and the cooler air has not made its way that far east. and still snowing heavily across portions of eastern pennsylvania. through norgss of new york city and connecticut by the way, we already have reports up to 10 inches of snow there and in new jersey, 12.5 inches of no reported in west milford and a powerful system, as far as timing on the storm, through sunday, i think until be out of new york city and also, 9 a.m. sunday when the worst will be over for the city of boston and heavily across the state of maine and long gone for trick-or-treers and a prty nice day out there and nighttime hours, it will be chilly, but dry, winter storm
