really need including making sure their loved ones are there with them. i'm shannon bream, america's news headquarters from the nation's capital stars right now. -- starts right now. >> shannon: with just one year until the presidentialç election still plenty of disagreement about whom the gop nominee will be but not -- the debate seemed proverbial calm before storm. gloves came off after cain left the stage. peter doocy is live with details. >> reporter: the debate didn't make a ton of news. both candidates charmed the crowd who paidç between district attorney -- $150 and $1,000 for tickets there was talk about social security and medicare. gingrich compared the president to madoff. after cain took a big shot at the immediate >> mr. cain, the attorney for

one of the women who filed sexual harrassment -- >> don't even go there. >> can i ask myç question? >> no. >> may i ask a ? >> where is my chief of staff. please send him the journalistic code of ethics. >> reporter: cain's communication director e-mailed me highlighting which parts of the code of ethics the campaign feels are being violated. among them a passage that says journalistsç should identify sources whenever feasible and test the accuracy of information from all sources. this comes of course at the end of a week when cain's credibility was questioned by a handful of anonymous sources. this morning some of cain's competition congressman paul said this is a big distraction. >> i think the media has blown that way out of proportion. it dilutes the real debate.

his views on foreign policy are dramatically different than mine. he wants to expand these things. he believes in the out and federal reserve and all this. that's what we should be talking about. reporter's question last night mr. cain says he does not ever plan to address theç harrassment allegations again. that doesn't mean nobody will ever ask him about it again. >> absolutely not. i have a feeling the questions will keep coming. >> we want to know what you think. has the immediate >> been fair or unfair to -- has the media been fair or unfair to herman cain. we'll read some of your responses later on in the show. ç israel's president says the international community is closer to pursuing a military solution in response to concerns about iran's nuclear program rather than a diplomatic one. comments are the latest move amping up tense.

disputes that saying it is not part of any discussions. the party's leader is calling on prime minister george papandreou to resign. >> bipartisan group on capitol hill urging members of the super committee to go big when itç comes to crafting day deficit reduction package due november 23rd. joining us michael bennett part of this bipartisan group. you say go big, how big is that? i guess under the structures of the agreement now place they have to come up with at least 1.2 trillion you say they need to goç further? >> most economists, republicans and democrats has said we need four trillion to come out over the next 10 years in order to reassure the markets we are serious about the fiscal situation facing this country and facing the world. i think it is politically easier to get to a four

trillion deal than a 1.2ç trillion deal. >> how so? a lot of members are feeling pressure. they've come together in a bipartisan way in the house to say we've got your back because we know you have to make tough decisions to get to something like four trillion. >> people in colorado are making tough decisions in this terrible economy. and they expect this to our work "ne and do our job. for the last year i've heard people here say that they want us to materially address the problem more like four trillion than 1.2. they want the solution to be bipartisan. they don't believe in a go it alone approach. that is achievable at the four trillion level. from the economy's point of view, it also would give theç markets some confidence that we can get beyond the political games that we've been playing the last 18 months and do something useful. there's 2.3 trillion of cash

sitting on the balance sheets of america's companies right now. it is not being invested in job creation because people have no idea what interest rate environment we are going to be in because they don't know whetherç washington will get out of is own way. a larger deal would allow us to create a shot in the arm for the economy. >> do you think tax increases need to be part of getting to that four trillion? >> i do. i think anybody that has done the math agrees. bowles simpson commission the bipartisan commission that reported now over a year ago had roughly ratio of 3-1ç cuts to revenue increases. those increases are gotten by lowering the rates corporate and individual on everybody. getting rid of a bunch of loopholes and deductions or minimizing them, simplifying the tax code that makes sense from the point of view of our economy. >> we don't know what is going

on in the discussions.ç we know at least one person on that committee agrees with you, representative clyburn, a democrat calls himself a four trillion kind of guy. sounding like preparing to go big or wants to as you suggested. sounds like you think the american people are ready for some of the sacrifice that may mean. you don't get to four trillion in cuts without somebody$sacrift of people sacrificing somewhere. >> as i said earlier, my view is people in colorado and i think i can generalize it to the american people, want to know we are in it together. they want to be asked to make a contribution. they want to know that everybody is in. and that's part of the problem thatxp[2 we've had. there are people that saying well, i would be willing to consider revenueç i don't think you are serious about entitlement reform. i would be willing to consider entitlements, but i don't think you are serious about revenue. we need to get that the boat at the same time that is going

president obama has hit a rough patch recently. >> theç president and i have a pretty good relationship. it has been a little frosty the last few weeks. but we've got a pretty good relationship. >> in his interview he complained the president is engaged in what he calls class warfare by pushing higher taxes for wealthier americans. despite that he says he and the president have found some common ground. >> one of theç biggest riffs between president obama and republicans like boehner is their dualing jobs plans. october numbers for jobs make a small move into the right direction. brenda buttner is here to look at the data. >> when it comes to the biggie of all economic reports the monthly unemployment one the headlines focus on the rate which did fall in october. aç 10th percent to 9%. remember the unemployment rate has been at 9% or higher for the past seven months. still, the economy added

80,000 net jobs. the private sector hiring 140,000 -- 104,000. government employment falling by 24,000. we would need at least 1 theiry,000ç jobs each -- 130,000 jobs each month to keep up in the adult population. the number of unemployed americans has fallen a small bit but still 13.9 million. with the average length of time out of work nine months, according to the bureau of labor stats. if you are a teen, forget it. your unemployment rate is 24.1%. education does make a difference. the unemployment rates of those were less than a high school diploma is 14% of the unemployment rate for college grads 4.4%. overall, the rate is 9%. a bit better the older you get as you may have more skills.

you also may have to work instead ofç retire as you hoped to. the 55 plus unemployment rate is 7%. here's the real bottom number if you add in all those discouraged people and others who are working part-time, who would rather work fulltime the unemployment rate is not 9%, but rather 16.2% that's the so-called underemployment rate. theç economy would need to add about 13 million jobs to bring unemployment down to 6% that's nearly 370,000 each month. we are a long way from that. given that local and state government continues to face that will be on the shoulders of private employers. many of whom are stillç handing out pink slips. we are inching in the right way, but we've got a long way to go >> some progress we'll see if -- thank you.

politician. these are all the reasons why he's resonated with voters to begin with. the flip side isç, with these claims that are unconfirmed, i think given clinton, edwards, all of these things we've heard over the past couple of years and in reality the way we live in society, i think some people can even relate to what has happened. the holiday parties are coming up soon. when people have a few drinks, people tend to be more friend itç is about how we manage our lives. i think a lot of people can relate to someone misinternship continuing a phrase or another. >> very fine line in the workplace. something interesting in the poll when they asked whether the allegations would have an impact on the likelihood they would support cain, 69% said it would make no difference. did that surprise you? >> i was a large number.ç for those who said that it did matter said they wouldn't support him. he can point to better

fundraising and more attention since this happened. he smartly attacked the press. the narrative has changed for him. he's uncomfortable. he doesn't want to talk about in more. much like rick perry with the debates. now cain doesn't want to do this any more. he understan s the narrative stands to change from 9-9-9 to women who told him no-no-no. i don't think he likes that. >> let's look to the broader picture. next fall, one year from election day. when you look at some of the polling. rasmussen has a poll out looking at a generic gop contender against president obama 47% aheadç of the contender versus 42% for president obama when you break it down into -- [ unintelligible ] where they specifically asked about romney vs. obama the president comes out 1% ahead. either way a tight race. what does somebody have to do

to break out of this field to take the president head on? >> i think part of it is despite caijgj problems, we still have the troops pulling out of iraq at the end of the year. despite the military advisers telling the president is probably not a good move. still at 9%. we still have a deficit problems. jobs bills that aren't going anywhere. the president's jobs bill did not go anywhere that was his own party. despite iç think are distractions from the real issues. despite the fact that politico has over 94 stories about cain, where are the stories about unemployment how we are going two get this country on track? at the end of the day that's what voters care about. who has the best plan and how is this going to affect my ability to put food on the table. that's all they care about >> how does this president turnç things around in his favor? >> the good news for president obama is that he doesn't have to run against generic republican. actually, generic republican

would win the republican nomination i believe. would be more popular than any of the contender. think the president is doing what he needs to do. he know he needs to move the economy forward. i think it is clear that republicans resist soç much because every improvement made in the economy limits their chances of taking back the white house. i think he's not going to top talking about his jobs plan and his proposals to improve the economy. republicans probably won't stop doing everything they can to block those. he will know that he's on the right side as long as he keeps pressing that point. i think you've seen movement in theç president's numbers on popularity and the economy that is definitely their game plan and they will probably do well. >> here's the problem, anything that he does today is not going to have an impact because for a -- we are a year out anything he does today is not going to have an impact. the economy we have today is the economy we are going to have in november 2012.

luke's wings does? >> first, thanks for having us this is nice to be on national television. we've had a lot of coverage in d.c. but never been able to hit the national stage so this is great. luke's wings founded in january of 2008 with the expressed mission of flying families in and out of military hospitals. we believe having family near you during recovery is cal to the process. and we also realize that families almost go bankrupt trying to take care of their wounded warrior. one father or mother will come out and be by the bedside and that leaves the family in a stressful situation there's less money, less income. the other siblings have issues because they don't have the 'tal figures around. by creating rotation plans we can row nate a mom and dad and then the whole -- rotate in a mom and dad and then the whole family. it makes things easier.

the warrior feels less guilt and strain. they in the darkest moments of their life. it is important to make sure they always have their family with them. i(p& attendant changing bandages day-to-day, but to make sure they unstand their fiance, wife and their kids and siblings and parents the whole family unit will be okay. we've been doing this for four years and it is a lot of fun. >> i want to check in with brad and cindy in california. you helped them time with their son eric injure.ç first we have to thank you for the service of your son and the family service. tell us what this program mass meant to you? >> -- program has meant to you? >> incredible. we were able to bring brad out at a certain time when eric and i really needed him through a meeting with jennifer who is a volunteer for luke's wings. everything just went like clockwork2work from the moment we filled out the --

settled but it could be a brutal battle. one of the top two candidates right now, herman cain is lashing out but not at an opponent. he is blaming media for continuing coverage of sexual harassment allegations dating back to the 1970s. we begin with a fox news alert. days after israel successfully tested a missile that could reach iran, israel's president says the international community is closer to pursuing a military solution to their concerns about iran's nuclear program rather than a diplomatic one. those comments are just the latest beating of war drums in the region. leland joins flurries jerusalem with more on the heated rhetoric. >> you have a situation where the israeli president is usually seen as a dove within the international community. he is now saying that the world needs to do whatever it takes

in order to keep tehran from getting the bomb. the war drum pitch continues to get beat faster and faster here. the prime minister and defense minister hereste have had well placed leaks about a possible attack on iran. when the u.s. secretary of defense visited back in october they refused to lay out a plan or even answer specific questions about what israel would do and also said they may not give the united states any kind of warning about a preemptive strike. remember that israel has twice before struck the nuclear programs of its neighbors including hitting iraq and also sitting syria. let's talk about the nuclear program in iran and what it would take for a successful hit. it is well hidden and deep underground. israeli aircraft would have to fly a long way to get there and on top of that even if they were able to hit the iranian nuclear program experts say it would probably only disable it for a couple of years. what is going on here? clearly israel is trying to put the iranian nuclear program

don't want to take tough votes but these are real job producers at a time when we know we need jobs. >> shannon: as you know, the president has said if congress continues to do nothing h his words that he will be able to campaign against a do nothing congress. it sounds like the house has been busy. senate democrats say these aren't legit bills they are going to vote on. who is to blame for the do nothingness of congress? >> i think that senator reid the majority leader not bringing the bills forward is causing us to not be able to do things. i mean why not bring them up. if he thinks they are not the worth voting on, bring them up, let them have amendments. let us have amendments. let's move forward on these things. the only thing we have passed of significance this whole year is the free trade agreements and one of the things that we did is lay down a marker to the president that we weren't going to confirm some of their key appointees until we got those

trying to come up with a broader unity government. the goal is to keep greece not euro zone. papandreo expected to step down to make way for some kind of unity government which would be a sign of stability for the rest of europe ha greece has some chance of climbing out of the crisis. it won't be easy. so far the opposition new democracy party has been playing hard ball with the socialists but the party leader meeting with him and the president right now to see if an agreement can be reached either tonight or tomorrow. now, this is a lot at stake. first of all, for greece, billions of dollars in aid from the european union and international monetary fund. also, of course, for the rest of the euro zone because this would be such a blow if greece were to default on its loans and, of course, the entire global economy will also be affected. and finally, shannon, t is interesting what one of the smallest economies in europe can do to the rest of thure are zone and to the global economy.

reaffirming that in god we trust is our motto? that is not putting people back to work. i trust in god but god wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work. >> shannon: so, was it a waste of time or as some critics say even unconstitutional? here for a fair and balanced debate, congressman dan lund greene who voted in favor of the resolution and annie gaylord joins us by phone. why did you think it was important to vote on this when there are so many other things that people would like to see congress doing? >> first of all, we have 16 bills on jobs that we sent to the senate and they haven't acted on. the suggestion by the president we are not acting on jobs is nonsense. secondly at all times in the history of this nation when we have dealt with difficult circumstances and this economy is in difficult circumstances we have acknowledged our reliance on god and we have as a country recognized the

origins of a dependence on a religious belief in this country and frankly it is under attack by a number of different groups in this country who believe that somehow it is inconsistent with the constitution when we believe it is entirely consistent with the constitution. it ought to be a strength of our country, not something viewed as weakness. >> shannon: and you are with the freedom from religion foundation, one of the groups who does have a problem with the motto. in fact, you sued to stop it from being engraved into the new capitol visitor center. a lawsuit that was later thrown out. what are your objections to this motto and making it official? >> first of all, the house majority leader eric cantor was on record saying that he would actively prevent any votes on new legislation that is not substantive and meaningful and you cannot make a case that this was substantive or meaningful. it was political grandstanding. it was a religious test for public office, a gotcha issue

and it is important for the nation to know that the original motto was chosen by a distinguished committee of jefferson franklin and adams and in god we trust was adopted in 1956 as a second motto. in order for it to be accurate it would have to say in god some of us trust because many good americans do not believe in a god and that would be a silly motto, wouldn't it? in god we trust is meanless to those of us who are god free. we h are the fastest growing sh of the adult population. 15% and even faster among young people. quarter of the population now questions the belief in god among 15 and 25-year-olds. there is a very exclusionary act and what i objected to the most was that congress the house went on record saying that in god we trust should be displayed in all public buildings including public schools. and i think this is very wrong.
