new signs of life in our nation's economy. according to the commerce department, new housing starts are up by more than 10%. unemployment claims fell to their lowest rate since april this week. a sign that the pace layoffs could be slowing down. and a positive surprise from america's retailers, better than expected retail sales pretty much across the board as consumers head back to the shopping malls. the question is, is the economy truly on the rebound? joining me now, fox news business contributor, gary. you say the economy is okay, but it's nothing to write home about. if you feel that way, what are the big problems stopping our economy from getting on solid ground? >> i just think it's going to be bumpy. we've had good quarters. we've had bad quarters up and down. for me, it's all about the deficit, it's all about businesses, knowing about the deficits and knowing it's a big head wind for the economy. europe for me, is quite important, but somewhat of a side moat compared to what $15 trillion is about. until we start working on that,
3:22 pm
i think confidence is the most important word we have until businesses get confidence. they're not going to hire as much and if we stay at 9%, i think the economy is just going to muddle through. >> arthel: you're telling us there will be this economic pendulum, if you will, the economy is not going to slow down and stabilize for a while? >> well, there has been talk recently about depressions and recessions. i don't think we have that. so i think we can grow one, 2%. whether it's 2% or 5%, if we have 9% unemployment, that's just way too much. the norm here for the last ten, 20 years has been about 5, 6%. we got to get back down there or you see what's happening with the occupy wall street and everything. there is a lot of that going on because of the lack of jobs. >> arthel: of course, the super committee, they're working hard. they've got that soft deadline coming up on monday to try to cut $1.2 trillion from our deficit. do you have any advice for them as they're carving down there? >> cut $4 trillion.
3:23 pm
the big problem with all this deficit talk is over the next five to ten years, deficits going to go up between 5 and $10 trillion. they're saying they're going to cut 1 to $2 trillion. that's not enough. here is a great number. the next seven years of our taxes have already been spent by washington, d.c that means going forward, where is that money going to come out of? us, the economy. that's where the head winds come in. that's why the economy can't get out of its way. i think if we fix this up, we get the growth rates and get unemployment down, but i'm not so sure they're serious. >> arthel: you're not too sure who is serious? >> the deficit committee. they've been talking a good game. we've been hearing deficit, fixing the deficit for the last ten years and meanwhile, we're at the highest it's ever been and growing leaps and boundses. >> arthel: they say they're going to try to come up with some agreement. we'll find out. the soft deadline is monday in advance of wednesday's already deadline. people at home, they want to --
3:24 pm
i started out the story by giving you some good news about the economy. that's what people want to cling to. do you have any of that in your thinking cap, if you will, to get people somewhat feeling good about what's happening? >> well, i think the good news is we are growing. the economy is growing. corporate profits are good, and still 91% of people out there are working. so there is a lot of good news compared to what we heard just a couple of months ago. when the market was getting hit, i was listening to analysts talk about another depression coming, which is for me, out of the question. i'm just talking about if we're going to really get this economy going, normally when you come out of recessions, you get big growth rates. we're not getting that right now. until we get this uncertainty out of the way, i think we'll continue the muddle through and it will be tough. >> arthel: what do you say to getting the folks who are waiting to watch this political battle take place, because there is speculation and reports, and innuendos that nothing is going to get settled before the election next year in terms of the economy?
3:25 pm
>> well, i have a national radio show and i tell people, look, we're like little puppets. we're waiting for these people to act and i have never seen such divisiveness on both parts, polar opposites. they've got to get it together because we do not want another 2008 all over again. and that -- the debt we have outstanding, that could happen. and if we wake up one day and that does happen, i don't think we can cure it like we did the last time with more debt. >> arthel: in the meantime, people have to hold on, try to get to the holidays. don't spend too much. have a good time. it is the holidays, but try to hold on in the meantime. that's my opinion. i don't know if you agree with that or not. thank you very much. good to see you. >> rick: all right. you were talking about poll numbers regarding the economy. and some numbers and data from the commerce department. we'll talk about new poll numbers about politics. gop politics, to be specific. brand-new poll that shows the four gop candidates who are running for president, four of those people on that stage there

vote, that they're supporting one candidate, but hey, you never know. they might support somebody else. 60% of people said that, as a matter of fact. what does that tell you? >> that tells me how fluid the field is. look, iowa caucus goers want one thing, they want a bold leader who is going to keep one eye on the economy and one eye on government reform. remember, likely iowa caucus goers on the gop side to test obamacare, that is a real question. that's why someone like neat neat if he wants a real shot, he needs to score a victory in iowa. don't be fooled. mitt romney wants to win as well. but with romneycare, he may be looking at a second place finish. >> rick: josh, what do you make of the gingrich surge? >> it's all about newt at the moment. will people want someone who can debate president obama in a tough way and gingrich-like way and ignore all the problems he's got, including the things about $2 million in lobbying for fannie mae, freddie mac this kind of stuff. look at the people who won iowa in the past, though. or done well there. pat robertson, mike huckabee,

pat buchanan. these are not main stream guys and don't go on to be the nominee or the president. so i'm not sure what we're really going to get out of this year's contest. i think if romney wins, it's over. if gingrich loses, his campaign has taken a real hit. >> rick: mitt romney is conducting a town hall right now as we speak. we've got live pictures from new hampshire where he's talking to voters there. everybody is in iowa except for mitt, who is in new hampshire. has he kind of written iowa off? what happens if he doesn't score in the top one or two? >> he hasn't written iowa off. earlier this week he opened offices in des moines. trust me, mitt romney really wants to win iowa because he wants to close the book on the nomination. but should he flop in iowa, not get a first or second place finish, he could really be in for a long fight all the way to tampa bay for the nomination. >> rick: josh, as a democrat, how does your party look at this? do you like sort of a protracted

battle between these republicans, or would it be better for president obama and his supporters if the president knew exactly who his opponent was going to be sooner rather than later? >> people call this a dead heat. it's a dead heat. these guys are doa against president obama. most of them. look at the fact that ron paul is doing so well. ron paul is the guy who believes in slashing the government, iran is no problem. consequences be damned when we heard folks who need the government. the fact that he's doing so well speaks to the fact that the right wing of the republican party, which is really what we're talking about in iowa, has moved beyond just religious fundamentals and now looking at libertarian cookieness. newt gingrich is the guy that 30% of the republicans may want for president, but 1% of the democrats do. this is a guy with a record you could play forever. >> rick: josh, the supporters of ron paul happen to be those who are the most ardent supporters, the folks who say they're behind

ron paul say more of them say they're not changing their vote. they've got their guy. let me ask you both for a prediction. i know it's a little tough 'cause we're a few weeks away, but ford, how does it shape, one, two, three? >> depending whether or not newt gingrich can sort of weather the media scrutiny as a co- front runner, i think iowa now if he can get the troops on the ground because the caucus is a big ground game play, i'll go with newt gingrich one, mitt romney two, and ron paul 3. >> rick: i'll let you weigh in, josh. what's your top three? >> my friend ford said ron paul supporters are like mcguy with a paper clip. they're going out there whether it's hailing, sleeting, snowing or anything. i give him as good a chance to run away with this thing as anybody. i do think gingrich is going to finish maybe if not one, maybe two. and romney number three. >> rick: gentlemen. thanks very much. josh and ford, enjoy the halliday. >> thank you, always a pleasure. >> rick: good seeing you.
