detained in cairo, egypt, are home. egyptian authorities arrested the three for allegedly throwing firebombs at egyptian security forces. the students say they were hit and left for hours and locked up in the dark and threatened at gunpoint. this morning, derrick weeny and his mother spoke exclusively with fox and friends about the ordeal. >> we were threatened with force-feeding gasoline. we were hit in the face, in the back of the neck. we had our jackets and shirts pulled over our heads so we couldn't see where we were going and we spent 7 hours in a fetal position with handcuffs behind our backs while people with guns said behind us said if we moved, we would be shot. >> a court ordered the students' released on thursday. they took separate connecting flights yesterday, the same day that a fresh set o flash clashes between security forces and demonstrators began.

elections are due to start in hours. hundreds of trucks carrying nato supplies are stuck, now that pakistan has closed important supply routes as the country blames u.s.-led nato troops for a deadly attack that kill the at least 24 pakistani soldiers. hi, peter. >> reporter: hi, shannon. the investigation is ongoing. but the latest word from the international security assistance force is that their isafer forces and afghan national security troops saw something sinister along the border corks so, so they called in an airstrike and that led to the massive loss of life and an isaf brig dare general told me that the communication ground lines are closed and that's bad. >> this is exactly where the terrorists are operating, operating on either side of the border, use it for a safe haven and migrating across the border and for firing at us as well as

at the pakistani forces. so it's a very dangerous area. and anything that leads to complications or lack of communication in this part of the world certainly serves one side and that's the insurgency. >> eric: if long liance of supply trucks start forming at the border, insurgents might attack them. so to attack them, re-establishing contact with pakistan is critical. they have told us, we need to get out of a base along the border that we have been using to coordinate droarn strikes against al qaeda and that kind of reaction from pakistan is not going over well here in washington. >> there is a lot of diplomacy that has to occur and be tough in the sense that they need to understand that our support for them officially is dependent upon their cooperation with us. but it's not the kind of situation where you can cut off all assistance because we do need their support in the region. >> eric: in a joint statement last night, secretary of state
9:04 am
clinton and secretary of defense panetta offered their condolences to the pakistani troop who is were killed. but things are really icy right now. >> all right. thank you, peter. in the wake of the deadly nato strike, pakistan is giving the u.s. two weeks to get out of a base that was reportedly used as a hub for drones. general, thank you for coming. >> good to see you. >> what do you make of our relationship? already strained when we crossed the borders to get bin laden. >> this is aggravating an already deteriorating relationship. that's the fact of it. the relationship has soured because they have been supporting the safe havens for the taliban and the hacanny network inside of pakistan, where they attack us daily. the bin laden attack and raid. we broke the sovereignty of that country. we didn't ask them for permission and we should not have. and also, that raid was conducted in a place that was in
9:05 am
the suburbs of the capitol city of pakistan, near a military base. everyone knows for a fact that the senior military leaders in pakistan knew that bin laden was there for five years. so the relationship has suffered. >> it is tough. several g.o.p. contenders talked in the debate on foreign policy, there is a lot of debate. do we cut off foreign aid? do we keep them close? do we try to maintain a relationship? it is clear there are stressors? >> we absolutely maintain a relationship. but we change the conditions. we have had soft diplomacy with them for a long time, given them aid with no conditions whatsoever. we have to stop that. that's the reality of t. maintain the relationship and change the conditions so that when we provide them support, there are conditions that go along with that. we want certain things back for that. that's the way we are going to have to be. we are going to have to be a lot
9:06 am
tougher than we have been in the past. i think our government officials are very frustrated because the pakistani leadership, particularly their military leadership has been lying to us for years about the safe havens and the sanctuaries. we know that they are there. they are providing money, intelligence, logistics and training. from those safe haven, they shoot at us every day. >> they have given us two weeks to clear out from the shamsi airbase, where the drones are apparently operating from that base. how bad is that for us, along with the closed-down spry route snitches the supply routes will be temporary. they have done this in the past. this incident we have had is devastating to us and to them. when have you friendly fire and you hurt people unnecessarily like this, everybody is so demoralized by it. it's a very tragic situation. but the fact of the matter is that the supply routes won't last until we complete an investigation and put the facts on the table and show them the
9:07 am
results of that investigation. i think they will probably open the supply routes again. if they don't, we will have to use the european supply route and an air bridge. we will continue to provide supplies to our troops, regardless. in terms of the base, if we lose the base, and i think we probably will, we can compensate by operating from within afghanistan. we have to go longer and further. >> this doesn't help that already very strained relationship. general keane, thank you very much. >> good seeing you. >> you too. newt gingrich's surge to the top of the g.o.p. presidential field has gotten a boost. he has landed the endorsement of new hampshire's largest paper. we pick up the story. i imagine this has bad news for the romney camp. >> reporter: and a snub to mitt romney. this endorsement from the influential man chester union leader, a big boost for gingrich, whose spokesman says
9:08 am

popularity this way. >> it proves, chris, how fluid and unpredictable new hampshire is. people are just beginning to pay attention and coalesce around the candidates. >> reporter: gingrich has come under fire for an immigration policy. candidate herman cain has a very different approach on that. >> the way i would deal with those who are already here, which has been my stated position, empower the states to deal with the illegals that are already here, not some big, grandiose, national one-size-fit-all. >> reporter: the gingrich campaign, very act 95 new hampshire, with a paid staff, contacting 1,000 voters every day. >> thank you, steve. and it is your turn to weigh in. is it fair or unfair to call gingrich's immigration rer reform plan amnesty? tweet your answers.

9:11 am
interrupting your vacation to be here on the show. i have to ask you about the fact that i know that g.o.j. attorneys met with you before the lawsuit was filed. had you hoped you could avoid a lawsuit because your law is different from the other states? >> yeah. utah law is very much different from other states. in fact, i have met face to face with the department of justice. they indicated to me that this law was something that was more reasonable and much better balanced approach than other states have done. so it was quite surprising, quite frankly, that they decided to sue over house bill 497, which is simply enforcing current federal immigration law. it just allows us to be a partnership with the federal government in enforcing the law. >> i have read comments and you believe there is internal pressure within the administration, within the department of justice to file lawsuits in response to these state laws, each though huhoped it wouldn't happen in this case?
9:12 am
>> yeah. i certainly think there were pressures put on by the obama administration to enter into a lawsuit because once again, the department of justice officials i met with and spoke with told me that this was a different bill, this was a different spirit to the way that utah approached its solution to working competitively -- and in a way with the federal government that alloweditous enforce the law, but not usurp federal authority. >> i know some of the sections, so people understand, that are challenged are a couple of things, the requirement that law enforcement verify legal status for those arrested for class-a misdemeanors or follows to allow warrantless arrest of those who are here illegally and to make it a crime to harbor or transport undocumented immigrants. janet knop -- janet napolitano says that will hurt relations. >> i don't agree.
9:13 am
this will allow the local and state law enforcement agencies to have wide discretion. warrantless arrests happen every day in the course of law enforcement. i do not believe that people truly realize that. many other states have passed laws tributing transporting and harboring illegal immigrants here in the state of utah. what i think it really shows right now is that there is a lack of courageous leadership in washington, d.c., both in thees and republicans in finding a solution to the issue. and in fact, that's frankly why i would like to see the state and the federal government to find a solution that works for everybody. >> both your state attorney general and governor feel confident that you will be victorious when this does go to court. what do you think your chance of success in the law being uphel is? >> i feel very hopeful that we can be victorious with this lawsuit because, once again, it's a mainstream approach.
9:14 am
we did things differently in this bill. if gave the tools to law enforcement to work with -- the federal government, enforcing laws already on the books. we didn't create a single new law. we do realize that dealing with illegal immigrants here in the united states is a very complex issue. we need to work together as a federal government and as a state to get this program solved. that's why, once again, we need courageous leadership in washington, d.c. quite frankly, that's why i am running for the united states congress so i can work on this and many other huge problems facing our nation in a way that we can work bipartisanship into this issue. >> i'm sure it will be a topic to talk a lot about on the campaign trail. utah representative steven sandstrom, thank you for your time. >> thank you for having me. i appreciate the opportunity to come on the show.

9:18 am
i should mention, one other key piece of evidence here, it was a surveillance video that apparently caught a hummer leaving the residence of dale smith jr. and that was the sticker that appeared on michelle's car. she ran a mobile airbushing, nning business, called glow. so that sticker was there. but surveillance showed, when that car drove away, the sticker was missing. we are not connect anything dots here. the police are not commenting. but that's a very interesting additional fact to this case, leaving a lot of questions today. >> very unusual. julie banderas, thank you very much for the latest on the case. >> reporter: sure. >> with millions heading home after the thanksgiving holiday, let's see how the weather could affect this busy travel day. hi, maria. >> good to see you. unofficial, we do have storms to talk about.
