2012 republican presidential field appears to be narrowing. mitt romney and newt gingrich. gingrich's campaign has gotten another boost in iowa, latest poll has the former house speaker seven point as head of his nearest competitor. his campaign isn't the only one getting good news this weekend. >> reporter: newt gingrich is closing in on mitt romney in new hampshire too according to the nbc poll as republican leaders express little surprise that cain suspended his campaign yesterday. >> i think that he provided a big voice in the debate. certainly his numbers were falling over the last few weeks. he was having trouble raising money. i think is only natural if your numbers are falling and you can't raise the money you get out of race. >> reporter: clearly, others see an opportunity here to pick up the cain votes and climb in the polls with cain

out of the way. michelle bachmann is one, rick santorum is another. >> we think we going to do well. we have a strong consistent conservative message that matches up better with iowans than anybody else and we think we going to surprise a lot of people. >> reporter: some peep in the gop not that crazy about newt gingrich, senator coburn applauds him for the 90s, but questions his qualifications to become president. >> there's all types of leaders. leaders that instill confidence. leaders that are an put up with and brisk. leaders that have one standard for the people they are leading and a different standard for themselves. i found his leadership lacking. >> reporter: six of the candidates squared off last night in a fox news forum hosted by mike huckabee. questioned by a panel of three gop state attorneys general on policy differences. newt gingrich for his part defended his plan to have

citizen boards determine which immigrants might be allowed to stay in the u.s.. he said those panels would be more trustworthy than washington bureaucrats. >> thank you. huckabee had his forum this morning we have our own later i'll talk to three state attorneys general about immigration, health care and the 2012 election. >> with a lot of prayer and soul-searching, i am suspending my presidential campaign. >> atlanta businessman herman cain says after a lot of soul-searching he has moved on to plan b. joining us one of his chief campaign advisers. niger innis we have a bit of a delay. i want to start by asking how tough was this decision was and know how tough the spotlight would be on the national stage?

>> e he knew how tough it was going to be. -- i think he dealt with it brilliantly. i would advice your viewers to go to the u.s.a. today interactive poll released last night and what it showed was compelling. in spite of the month and a half, unfair character assassination and frankly, the disgraceful way in which the media dealt with these accusations, in spite of all of that, herman cain remains still second or third in all the early states and nationally save new hampshire that tells me herman cain has a clear constituency. he has said he's away i would recommend your viewers take a look at his site and his new phase of the campaign.

have been together almost as long as i've been alive, which is rare these days. what a wonderful family what a wonderful partnership those two have. it just troubles me that the media did not deal with these unfair accusations the way that it did. let me answer your question. i think that what we will most likely see is an endorsement within the next week to 10 days. even though i advised herman to hold back on that endorsement, because there are so many americans that are loyal to herman himself and to his ideas. and are not quite ready for him to give it to someone else. i think what is actually more important for his supporters, to pay attention to what he does publicly. contrary to his detractors, herman cain is not going to

republican woman ever to get elected in that state to go to congress, but i did. >> shannon: michelle bachmann may be confident she can win in iowa the latest numbers show she has a long way to go. i sat down with chris wallace to find out what she told him about plans to turn things around. you talked with someone not doing so well in iowa but sounds hopeful. >> yeah, michelle bachmann. she really i think is staking everything on iowa. she from the neighboring state of minnesota, she was in iowa. it should line-up well for her of she's a social conservative more than half, if history is any guide, half voters who go out on a snowy january night and vote in the iowa caucuses, define themselves as evangelicals, social conservatives. she is 8% in the polls, hoping to pick up some of cain's support. she went after the two front-runners gingrich and

romney, saying they north consistent conservatives. -- they are not consistent conservatives and talks with some length and sharpness, digs about where they aren't consistent conservatives and says she is. look, we can look at these polls. there's a month to go. a lot of people haven't focused and things could change in next month. >> in washington the fight over the payroll tax holiday continues. there's news that you broke with senators about something coming tomorrow? >> democrats are pushing it extending the payroll tax cut for the middle class republicans a lot of doubts about it kent conrad the chairman of the senate budget committee said the senate leader reid because republican and democratic plans were voted down this last week he's going to come up with a new compromise to pay for it, 120 billion dollars for the next year.

found a dead man at a protest campsite on school grounds. no one was there when police arrived. several questions remain. >> the body has been taken to the ft. worth medical examiner's office. it could be weeks before we have the cause of the death. we don't know the identity. >> in portland riot police met protesters trying to establish a new camp. demonstrators were setting up tents vowing to stay through the winter over though overnight camping is not allowed. 19 were arrested. protesters have been trying to fan a new camp since police evicted -- find a new camp since police evicted them last month. thousands rushed down the stands on to the field to celebrate oklahoma state's victory against their huge rival oklahoma.

warm. >> i'm jealous chilly in d.c.. wasn't to start in alabama, luther, you have one of the newest laws, they say another may be coming. they say already your law is having adverse affects. how do you respond? >> well, i think part of that response is because we are winning in the courts. our law inlike the law in arizona has been upheld substantially by two federal courts. i think that explains a lot of the activity on the ground. what is frustrating to me as chief law enforcement officer is they come to alabama what, make a lot of statements unsubstantiated about potential vials if they are interested in make -- potential vie whraeugss if they are interested in making -- we would like their cooperation. if there is anything that is going on that is i will real which i'm not aware of, i would like to know about it so we can take action. >> shannon: to arizona and tom horn. you mentioned the arizona law.

the governor and others there are trying to get the supreme court to take up the latest appeal on the legal challenges, you could know in a company of weeks. do you think you will get the high court to weigh in on your law? >> i hope so. one of the things that a lot of people don't realize is the 9th circuit, two out of the three judges held were preempted from having our law go into effect because we were interfering in the govenment's foreign policy monopoly. mexico and other countries have intervened. we do a lot that foreign countries with, such as capital punish. if we pass laws that foreign countries disagree with, -- >> that is in south carolina as well. alan with the lawsuit there, 16 latin american and caribbean nations have weighed

in. they want to get involved. they want to have a voice in it because of the law you passed in south carolina. they think it will cause discrimination against people who originate from their countries. what did you make in this -- what you make of their involvement? >> i'm not particularly concerned with their involvement we have a duty to enforce the laws. the policy has been decided by the general assembly our job is to enforce the law. what other countries in third-party groups think is irrelevant to that end. our job is premoat the law as it is passed unless it is unconstitutional. in this case it is my opinion our law on immigration is constitutional. >> it is a hot topic. i want to play a bit of the forum we had last night with the presidential candidates. >> in a free society, the

citizens have to bear responsibility for their own culture and society. i believe they are mover trustworthy, if you ask me would i trust a jury or a washington bureaucrat, i would rather have my fate decided by a jury of my peers than by a washington bureaucrat. >> i want people to know there is a cost already to having illegal aliens in the united states. it cost the taxpayers 113 billion dollars every year, 32 billion of that cost is absorbed buy states that works out to $1,000 per american household. a -- it is a very real cost. >> shannon: not that you are endorsing candidates i want each of you give a -- whose position are you most comfortable with? let's start in alabama. >> we are just now starting to hear the candidates talk about this issue and i'm glad.

we all know it is a federal issue that should ab dressed at the federal level if the federal -- federal government would do its job states wouldn't have to deal with it. i'm very glad the debate is occurring. and i'm waiting to hear a little bit more before i make a decision. >> shannon: tom, do you have a decision yet? >> yes, i public endorse mitt romney he's been successful in business which we need in this economic environment he was a governor. i was comfortable publicly endorsing him. >> shannon: alan in south carolina. >> i think you asked for one word, the law. my jokó in south carolina is enforce the law i need a president who will enforce the law. the federal level, did not believe it was the intent of congress that they deprive the federal government of all the and -- the resources we

are adding the federal government in enforcement of that law even in our law it says to be -- conducted in a manner consistent with our constitution and federal law. it comes down to that one word, the law. >> shannon: i want to make sure we have limited time. there have been discussions about health care, lawsuits coming before the supreme court in the spring. newt gingrich and mitt romney have in some form or fashion, they have in some way endorsed the idea of a mandate in the past both admitted that public do you have any problem with >> well, i have a problem with individual mandates that's why our state supports the lawsuit against obamacare care. i'm hopeful the court will see it our way, -- overrule that mandate. that's my position.

>> shannon: tom? >> we've joined in the florida action the case going to the u.s. supreme court. our position is the federal commerce clause doesn't enable the federal government to require me to buy something i don't want to buy, such as health insurance or it might be a car next time around because the government now owns general motors. governor romney did that at the state level but doesn't support it at the federal level. >> shannon: alan? >> for my purposes near south carolina, there are enumerated powers that give congress the ability to do certain things forcing people to enter into private contracts is not an he mime rated power. i think that is -- that is a slippery slope, enlargement of congressional and federal power we are going to be strongly advocating this string to the united states supreme court that is an overreach by congress and the federal government.

to hit home? >> who can beat president obama? who is best on issues that reflect new hampshire and third who is going to change the direction of our nation. we have debt and deficit at extreme highs unemployment still high people want to focus on getting a career back in place who within the republican field is going to deliver that the best and quickest. >> shannon: these candidates are spending a lot of time one-on-one. >> it is required in new hampshire. the joke is if you haven't met a candidate five times you are not going to earn that vote. it is a tradition. great to have candidates come back. appreciate the first in the nation primary in. of tightening, voters make decisions. the field we thought was set two weeks ago, we obviously have candidates that are dropping out that changes the make-up of this campaign over

the final six weeks. it will be interesting and fun to watch. >> shannon: there are important endorsements that come out of new hampshire last week gingrich scored a big one, romney today. >> endorse s give credibility. they are important. what ultimately matters reach and every vote on the ground and you are going to campaign. you have to be in the state. you have to be looking people in the eye asking for their support. i haven't made my decision question, i'm still watching now is going to play out. what i'm looking for is someone who can take the country in a different place than the president has. i would like to talk about who these candidates are thinking about in terms of their cabinet? the people that closely with them and grading them, who are these individuals going to be? what kind of individuals are they going to put on the supreme court? those are interesting and important questions that i think you will start to see answers to. >> have you narrowsed it down?

>> probably to -- three. i continue to take a look. i had conversations with newt gingrich last week and will be meeting with him, same with mitt romney as well as rick perry. and john huntsman. i'm looking and trying to figure out what makes the best sense for new hampshire and our country. >> shannon: what do you make of the gingrich surge? >> his campaign has been a little untraditional, to say the least. he's ramping up with his staff in new hampshire, focusing on grassroots. no question the union leader endorsement is critical. i think given the fact that he's had a long history with new hampshire, he has a lot of experience and solutions, people going to give him a second look, as we get closer to the date by which we need to make a decision. i don't think is a flash in the pan. i think he's a serious

propose tomorrow a compromise plan to extend the payroll tax cut. >> shannon: senator kent conrad talking about a compromise plan to extend the payroll tax holiday but just what would it mean for you to extend that tax break? senior business correspondent brenda buttner is here to break it down for us. hello, brenda. >> hi, shannon. no question the pay check you take home now will be smaller if the payroll tax cut expires at the end of the year. a compromise will save you money. workers this year saw their payroll taxes cut 2% from 6.2%. of course, as with most things in washington, there has been plenty of fighting between the parties about whether to keep the cut. how to pay for that. also, whether we should cut it more and how to pay for that. but let's just look at what happens to your wallet should washington actually do something. the tax policy center estimates that 121 million families currently get a break from the tax break with an average

increase to pay checks of 1.7%. this works out to be about an average 934 bucks in take home pay over one year. now, that is a very broad number, however. so let's take a look at what the bureau of labor statistics and the national occupational employment and wage estimates help us see about the impact on some popular occupations and what they usually make. let's take a nurse. of a an average salary of close to $68,000 a year. the take home pay is less healthy, the nurse loses $1,400 if the tax holiday is gone next year. what about an electrician making $51,000 a year. $1,036 less in take home pay. for a home health aide at $21,000, some $400 more in taxes paid. of course, we taxpayers all pay more for this so-called

big drag on the economy itself. the democrats like to demonize certain individuals but the worst thing you can do is continue to grow government, raise taxes to do it and as we have seen from the economic numbers come out, we had 315,000 people stop looking for work in november. don't make it harder for this economy to grow and stop playing cass war fair and let's get on with the business of growing the economy. >> shannon: when it comes to cuts and entitlements, what are you willing to consider on the table? >> i think the main thing as i said is i want to grow the economy. if you have a tax on millionaires it is is really not going to affect them that much. the problem is if you start cutting, you know, social security or medicare or some other programs that basically destroy jobs, then the opposite is going to occur. we don't want to reduce employment in the country right now and i think that the best way to deal with that is to basically say if this is paid for by those who are making

over a million dollars a year they can afford it and then we continue to put money in people's pockets so that they spend and we continue to grow. i mean i'm just very fearful of cuts that are going to essentially destroy jobs or take, you know, eliminate programs that right now are creating jobs. >> shannon: and congressman mccotter county gop afford to be seen at this point in time with the economy struggling the way that it is, not extending this payroll tax cut? i mean is there a public perception for them that would be very tough to actually vote down a measure that would do that? >> well, shannon, while the democrats like to talk about perception, i think it is best that the american people deal with the reality and the choice is to have payroll tax cut extension which you are going to have as a choice between higher taxes or less government and the republicans understand the way to grow the economy is not through more government. we saw that with the failed stimulus. we continue to see that with the inability of people to find

work in this country. when we talk about not wanting to make sure that the economy, let the economy grow but we don't want big government to grow. you have to restructure big government. you have to reduce spend. you to reduce the debt and the i.o.u. you are going to pass on to our kids. is going to hurt the economy and hurt future generations of americans and republicans will continue to oppose raising taxes for more government. >> shannon: the final word here. >> we have to be he concerned about the debt but right now the biggest problem is to grow the economy. if you start cutting entitlements like social security and medicare and medicaid it just means more jobs lost. we have to be careful in the next year or two because essentially we are starting to see signs of a recovery. unemployment went down a little last month. the amount of manufacturing and the amount of jobs in the private sector is growing. so i would be very careful
