>> trace: but it was indeed a date that would live in infamy 70 years ago. for this harbor day we are grateful for those who serve. that's it for "the fox report." o'reilly is next. >> bill: "the o'reilly factor" from washington is on. tonight: >> i believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot. >> president obama's channeling teddy roosevelt, saying that america's economic problems are caused by greedy big business. but is that true? we will have analysis. >> don't you think a holiday tree -- a holiday tree. what holiday is it, governor? >> jesse watters visits rhode island governor lincoln chafee over the christmas holiday tree controversy. we'll show you what happened there. >> my fellow americans, night i humbly come before you to declare war on

christmas. >> and once again our pal jon stewart mocking the war on christmas scenario. we have a reply to that. >> bill: caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone from d.c. the factor begins right now. captions by closed captioning services >> bill: hi, i'm bill o'reilly, reporting tonight from washington. thanks for watching us. president obama channeling teddy roosevelt, that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. as you may know president roosevelt despised capitalism even though he was a rich guy himself. did he not like monopolies or rich organizations exploiting american workers. he fought hard to get fairness into the private marketplace. now president obama says he wants to do the same thing in the face of a faltering economy. >> i believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot. when everyone does their fair
5:02 pm
share. [ applause ] >> when everyone plays by the same rules. these aren't democratic values or republic values. these aren't 1% values or 99% values. they are american values. and we have to reclaim them. >> bill: okay, nice speech. the problem is mr. obama seems to be blaming the bad economy on wealthy americans and corporate greed heads. talking points believes that is a reuse. there is no question some companies are piggish. they short change their workers while lavishing benefits on executives. private companies can do pretty much what they want in the compensation area. personally, i won't do business with exploitative people and all americans should consider that philosophy. president obama says he is angry about corporate abuse. well then why hasn't he condemned government mortgage agencies fannie mae and freddie mac they owe we the american people $40 billion. they are lavishing bonuses on
5:03 pm
top executives. the president could do something about that so far he has chosen not to. so, once again, i'm a bit skeptical of about mr. obama's motives here. it's certainly possible that he doesn't know how to recharge the economy so he is blaming fat cats in order to create a distraction. today the "new york times" laid out the true liberal agenda on the economy saying quote elected officials can step in to keep competition fair and ensure the government has enough money to protect the vulnerables. there it is the "times" and many liberal americans want elected officials, that's the government, to run the private sector, to dictate who gets what hello cuba. unlike some obama commentators i don't believe the president is a socialist. i think he is an ardent liberal who wants income equality and believes the feds should impose that some say that is socialism. it's close, no question. the difference is mr. obama not proposed seizing private
5:04 pm
assets. he does want the wealthy to carry most of the tax burden. president obama's administration has not served america's economic problems. and talking points believes it has run out of ideas. so now the only play, the only play is to convince voters that greed heads are holding the economy back. and we must take more from them. i don't believe the american people are going to buy that. but i could be wrong. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight. just two republicans, newt gingrich and rick san forum have agreed to a debate moderated by donald trump at the end of this month. joining us from our new york studios to analyze the purveyor of dick morris.com and the author of big new children's book dubs goes to washington. what about this trump debate deal? mitt romney says is he not going, ron paul is not going, huntsman is not going to go. first of all why do you think there is resistance to mr. trump. >> any debate ron paul and huntsman are not in would be a really good debate.
5:05 pm
think think that romney should go. i think he will go. i think he is being foolish for saying no. originally i guess they were they saw it as limited tv exposure, news max the group sponsoring it has a wide reach and i suspect by the time the debate happens it will be on a great tv screens throughout the country. we reached a tipping point in that foreign policy debate the last big one where the american enterprise institute and the cato institute asked the questions. not some tv anchor person who doesn't know anything about anything. and you really had good questions, substantive questions. i think it would be terrific to have donald trump ask these guys what they are going to do about the economy and then critique their answers and engage in a give and take. i think romney should jump at that opportunity. this is his issue. frankly when you are 15 points behind you go to debates. >> bill: okay.
5:06 pm
i don't disagree with any of that if i were the candidate i would go to trump's debate and make fun of trump like i do here. by referring it that anchorman reference you are not referring to me rumor his. >> you are not an anchorman you are a commentator. >> bill: i am in a way. i thought i would have to slap you around. >> anchor management. >> bill: very good. now gallup poll out today has gingrich in a big lead. it correspondence to herman cain's being out of the race. all, it seems, of herman cain's support has gone over to newt gingrich which is very bad news for rick perry, by the way, ohio think their campaign thought they would pick up some of herman cain's support. they haven't picked up any. in fact, perry is down a point. romney, i don't know if they expected to pick up any herman cain support two very different people. but, it is now a two-man race according to gallup. do you buy into that? >> i think that the evidence is certainly pointing that way. there is a big debate on saturday night and i think that will be decisive.
5:07 pm
>> bill: it's not really a big debate because nobody is going to watch it saturday night in the christmas season, nobody is there to watch it i think the fox news debate and i am not saying this to be jinguistic. i love that word. fox debate tomorrow is going to be the slam dunk knockout debate a week from tomorrow fox news. everybody will be watching. >> well, i think these debates are certainly going to be very important now. it's no longer of a question if you campaign in iowa and then that effects the country. you campaign nationally over fox and other networks in the debates and then that imposes if you won iowa. >> no doubt about it. >> bill: let me put you. >> voters who started off with bachmann and then they went to perry and then they went to cain and now they are at gingrich. >> bill: all right, morris, we know all of that des moines register says 600% of juans might change their vote. that's enormous. i will have you advise romney
5:08 pm
and have you advise gingrich. okay? first romney. romney is running third second in iowa, but well behind newt gingrich. he has got four weeks to make up the ground and the voters say they are willing to listen. so what does romney do to convince iowaians to go for him and not gingrich or one of the others? >> i'm going to answer your question but it's within the context of my not supporting either of these guys. i will articulate the case for each of them. i like them both. the case for romney against gingrich is i have been a businessman for my whole life. i have created hundreds, if not -- hundreds of thousands of jobs. >> >> bill: he has done that. he is doing it. >> it will be effective against newt. i think he can really in effect say if you want someone who specialized in the economy, that's me. and i think the other thing. >> bill: morris, wait. do you not hear me in your ear piece? that's what he has done for the past five months.
5:09 pm
i think he has got to do something different. that's been his message. >> and the second message will be because i think it will be effective against gingrich. second message should be i can win. the very factors that make him a hard sell in the primary, romney care being pro-choice and before -- that kind of stuff, gay civil unions. those all make him much more acceptable in a general election. >> bill: that's a slap at gingrich if he says i can win and he can't win. that's what's going to have to be. >> i don't think he can make the case that newt can't win. i think he can make the case that he has a better chance of winning than gingrich does. i think a lot of republicans could care less who gets the nomination. they just want someone to beat obama. >> what would you tell gingrich to keep his lead? what should he do? >> everybody agrees is he more conservative than romney. everybody agrees that he sticks to his positions more than mitt does. those are the two things he needs to stress.
5:10 pm
gingrich is sui generous. he is in a category by himself. what he needs to do is what he always does, go out there and be brilliant and on 00 strength of his intellect get votes. >> bill: he has to do more of the same and romney has to just kind of tweak it a little bit over to say look, can i beat this obama guy and gingrich might not be able to. dick morris, everybody, dubbs on dick morris.com. michele bachmann ambush in south carolina by an 8-year-old boy. we will show you what happened and it's pretty troubling. then later once again jon stewart sticking up for the anti-christmas forces. we are coming right back from washington. we know a place where tossing and turning have given way to sleeping. where sleepless nights yield to restful sleep. and lunesta can help you get there, like it has for so many people before.

5:14 pm
>> that mother using her will-year-old boy to make a political point to the congresswoman. joining us now from new york political commentator and gay activist sally colmes. that disturbs me. it was obvious the little boy was coached what to say fixing. 8-year-olds don't say stuff like that. they don't talk about gay controversies. and so he was told what to do. he hesitated as you saw on the tape. and i don't thi that's right. i think that mother did this child a disservice. so, what say you? >> yeah. i disagree with you. bill. i actually -- i have a 3-year-old. ry know a lot of 8-year-olds. anyone with a kid knows there ain't much you can make them do or tell them to do and also that they can be shy. look, i suspect that this kid, and second of all, you know, kids aren't raised in vacuums. they see the political

discourse going around them. this kid probably sees his family, his mother being attacked by politicians like michele bachmann. and no doubt he has a very clear opinion that his mom is a great mom. and shouldn't be a political football, so good for him. >> bill: i think you are living in a land of oz. i have an 8-year-old son. i know more 8-year-olds than you know. i know tons of them. none of them are thinking about gay rights. none of them. none of them would say as this child did my mommy is gay but she doesn't need any particularsing. that's not what an 8-year-old would say. i am telling you sally you are a absolutely dead wrong. if this mother wanted to say it herself, that's fine. she is online. she is buying a book. she goes up there. you say it, lady. let your kid be a kid not be a political commentator to a sitting congresswoman. >> sure. >> bill: i think it's appalling. i really do. it's doesn't help her cause or
