4:03 pm
former massachusetts governor mitt romney and both men on sunday talk shows earlier today. and romney fresh off two endorsements, he picked up in the past 24 hours and i mentioned one of them from bob dole. our chief political correspondent, campaign carl we like to talk him. appears the only one attacking in the romney gingrich battle is romney. >> gingrich is taking it from a lot of candidates, michele bachmann and mitt romney has certainly been aggressor as gingrich rose to the top of the polls, romney adjusted his campaign and took him on head on and today, he listed a whole bill of picks he thinks are gingrich's disqualifying policies. >> said right wing engineering, talk about unreliable at a critical time,
4:04 pm
he cut the legs out from underneath a very important message, the same was true with regard to cap and trade. this was battled on capitol hill and the speak are sat down with nancy pelosi and speak in favor of climate change. and zany, i wouldn't think you would call mirrors in space to light highways particularly practical or a lunar colony at at a stage like this. >> romney has been trying to knock down gingrich's perceived electability. mr. gingrich is not responding in kind and he expected to come in perhaps third or fourth in the iowa caucuses and doesn't anticipate being in first place at this point, the flip side suggests he hasn't been entirely organized and has a lot of work to do in what will be 15 more campaign days before the caucuses with some indication that his lead in the poll could begin to slip. >> we saw a couple of
4:05 pm
endorsements, key ones, from former presidential nominee himself, bob dole. how much do endorsements change voter's minds? >> well, they can, but it's not always easy. the des moines register had its own endorsement of mitt romney saying that he has the sobriety and the wisdom to be president of the united states and suggested that news gingrich's history of partisanship is not to take liking and particularly if they continue to exhibit times of being a little bit shoot from the hip and off the cuff with his remarks. in the case of bob dole, it's particularly significant. the des moines register is seen as a moderate to liberal for republicans. but bob dole has won the iowa caucuses twice in the past presidential candidacies and beat george h.w. bush in 1988, and won caucuses in a very, very big battle and when he was attacked as the republican
4:06 pm
nominee by the democrats and bill clinton, it was in many cases for his association with newt gingrich. so, for bob dole to choose romney over his legislative partner he when gingrich was the speaker and dole was the senate majority leader in washington, is a bit after backhand to the former speaker and just the kind of thing that mitt romney absolutely loves. >> harris: he we should say they're making news outside of the state of iowa, but there are candidates within the state and we'll follow them, too, as they make updates as well. they don't call you campaign carl for nothing. thank you very much, we appreciate it. >> american history in motion. on this day, the very last american troops are out of iraq. this was the scene just before midnight as the final u.s. convoy rolled across the iraq border into kuwait. the low key ending very different from the beginning, nearly nine years ago. the u.s. invading iraq with what was billed shock and awe, toppling the now dead

4:08 pm
take a look. >> that is the last truck, the last troop, the last vehicle, the war is over, essentially, for the united states in iraq. there they are. >> oh, oh. >> ooh-ah as the u.s. army says and i think they're quiet, a little stunned. the last convoy had 500 troops on board, 110 trucks. they made their five hour trek down from southern iraq to the border and it was high security. militants in the region right to the end said they wanted to kill americans, no one died. no incident. and then the trucks moved further south from the border, one hour down to where we are right now, camp virginia. and the vehicles were stripped down to be shipped out to, including afghanistan. where there's another war raging, as well as the folks, the troops, they're being processed and they will be flying out and flying home. and this is a little bit of what some of the people on
