what could they be doing to celebrate the holiday? i'll begin with you, bob. >> first of all, how good are these kids? fantastic. >> let's hear it. we want to thank eric for getting them here. i miss sod many christmases back in the old days. i would think christmas was the 27th or 28 when i woke up. so now i've gotten into christmas a lot, as you well know. i decorate a lot and do things in my neighborhood and believe it or not on christmas eve, tonight after i leave here, i'm going to go out and go christmas caroling. >> stay out of the post office. i like your tie and it has a christmas present coming at you. >> it does. >> how about eric? we know you love the holidays and christmas. you're lit up about it. >> i'm lit up. these guys are great. we'll talk to them. but christmas for us, very, very special holiday. we spend a lot of time bringing all the family on christmas day,

there will be a lot of "law and order" reruns. so i'll be order ago festive bowl of chinese food and i'll be wearing my festive boxers, watching "law and order." >> i'd like to go to a movie on christmas day. >> that's a lot of fun, i used to do that. >> i'm going to go to one right after this christmas day. >> i want to talk about memories and moments. scrap books, mental and/or actual. >> i got lots of things on that. i was going to say one thing about the crowd, i'm new to new york, too at christmas time. they gave me an apartment three blocks away. when it rains, new york city, umbrellas are like weapons. now, what my memories about christmas, the worst one i had was actually five years in a row when my old man came home on christmas eve and fell into the christmas tree, which is one of the reasons i decided to decorate alt time, because when he did that, i said when i was

on my own, i would decorate and do it right. it's my favorite holiday. my memories are when i was a bachelor, i would bring in lots of people who were not married for christmas eve and christmas day. we would swap presents. some of those presents were not necessarily, but they were fun. >> my goodness. thanksgiving i told the story about my wife cooking the turkey upside down. >> like me. >> i'm not sure if she's done this, but she literally is the one person who has gotten caught regifting again. a sweater that she had gotten from a friend and didn't check it, gave it to her grandmother. her grandmother opened the sweater and i swear, from laurie o edegree yen and she had given it o her grandmother. >> that's awkward. oh, my goodness. you have to document all the stuff for regifting. keep a ledger. >> i grew up out west. so when we would have a white

christmas, like the blizzard of 1982. >> you had one of those, bob. >> yeah. go ahead. >> i just remember that. i was asking my sister. >> what our favorite memory? she reminded me that my grandmother used to make all sorts of christmas cookies for the hospital that she was very meticulous about every single one had, like the santa face would have the white frosting with the coconut and the blue eyes and the little silver ball on the hat. she was very good at it. i tried to be patient and do it as well. i haven't carried on that tradition. >> you had a white christmas a lot, didn't you? we used to have white christmas es in connecticut, but because of global warming, we don't have them any more. >> but people can travel more and we should be thankful for that. >> no, not really. but galileo and i are on the same page. >> how could you politicize this christmas special? >> greg? >> i have a couple of memories,

most recent favorite christmas memory was being edited out of the fox and friends christmas special. because they asked me to go on that there and talk about how i felt about christmas and then it disappeared. they said it was the worst segment they ever had. >> this is a true story. >> yeah, it's a true story. the thing is, people think that i hate christmas. i actually like christmas. i just hate shmalt. i hate cheese. i like to go to a bar and drink, but i don't like flashy bar tenders. i like to eat a cheeseburger, but not go to chuck e. cheese. when it gets to shmaltzy, i leave. >> i like it 'cause they don't serve burgers, they serve pizza. >> that's treatment but you can get a cheeseburger pizza. what i love most about memory he was christmas when i was a kid was always confusing the behavior of the adults. like around holiday, they were always louder and funnier and your mom always said stuff to your dad that she never said before. you always thought that was holiday spirit, but it was

vodka. >> that's interesting. you must love his christmas spirit with these george amounts flashing -- ornaments flashing. >> that's cute. >> my favorite memories. we showed my husband decorated, which is not going to be finished. it's great. i think i'm gog win the award this year. i have a sign out front that says, to all the kids in my neighborhood and for the big kid that lives here. and -- thank you very much. that was a heartfelt oh but it is about kids. and look at these guys. we're blessed with having the kids from newark and they're great singers. i can't sing a lick. but i sit outside and christmas is passed and i watch the kids come by and look at my decorations and also they come up. i have these presents that are made of lights and they try take them away. that's the only problem. >> i have a couple christmas things. i'm going to go maybe to the country where there is real green trees out there. so that won't be a problem with finding a nice real tree. last year when i went to go decorate, i put the tree up and

said i'll do it myself and i got one too big for the base, all over. water, ornaments. big problem. right? so this year i kind of got it together. i got a smaller tree, had my expectations in line and had some little ornaments. >> i don't get a tree anymore because everywhere you go, there is a tree. >> that's true. >> and i don't have to clean up the needles. >> bob beckel, you changed my christmas for the first time ever, you had said something at one of the shows that you can't stand jersey because they have all the fake christmas trees. we have a real christmas tree for the first time. >> good for you! >> by the way, it smells fantastic. >> they do. >> you have to water them. >> those plastic, you can tell. i can tell. they say you can't tell, i can tell all the time. but greg, is yours plastic or real? >> the tree? >> yeah. >> oh, god. >> i actually a tree last year. in new york, you can't expect people in new york to have actual trees. >> that's true. but it is a great city to be in.

♪ nice. >> welcome back to "the five". so you can see how dumb most christmas gifts are by all the dumb commercials you see for them. like all of a sudden, people must have sweaters. sorry. unlike smoke alarm batteries, sweaters do not need to be replaced every year. the worst a gift card. do you know how many of them go unused in according to the american society of gift cards, $300 billion are wasted every december. that's $40,000 per person. yes, i made up all of those statistics. still, if you laid every single unused gift card end to end, you would have a really long line of unused gift cards and you would probably get arrested. that's almost as bad as anything from a chain pharmacy. if you got it from the discount table, you probably are satan.

unless it's nyquill. but please, no dvd collections of shows from the '90s. if i didn't watch friends then, i'm not watching it now. one exception is "designing women." so what is a great gift idea? how about one for your wife? how about this. a giant red bow, deliver it by borrowing your friend's new car and attach it to the roof where it will really make her christmas. >> for the last several years with all these commercials about someone giving someone else a car for christmas, that cannot possibly be true. >> i don't know a single person who got a car for christmas. >> me neither. >> but i know a lot of people get giant red boats. >> okay. >> i got my mother a car with a giant red bow on it once for christmas. >> you stole it. >> does that matter? >> i got a car for christmas. >> you did? >> kimberly, you get a new car every month.

>> i was thinking issues the best present that you got was a convertible, was the worst present you got a lesser kind of vehicle? >> no. actually i liked my other vehicle better, which was a dodge dart. it was like 1970 vehicle, red with a 6 engine. >> that wasn't a christmas gift? >> that was birthday gift. >> one of the ones i loved is i got -- remember the book box? i remember i got the one that had the double cassette player. kids today aren't going ono what i'm talk being. then you can make tapes. like cassette tapes. >> we gave my son when he was about eight, he want add lizard, one of those things live forever. those disgustingly ugly things and every week you have to throw something in, like a mouse or something. worms. you know what he did? he repackaged it and gave it back to me the next year. i haven't been able to kill that thing. honestly. what i ended up doing was give it to my neighbor.

>> his dad one time gave him an empty box and told him it was g.i. joe deserter model. the living ones are the tough ones. frogs and then i got russian dwarf mice. that's what they were called. apparently exotic. they were named lucy and ethel, but apparently they were a boy and girl and they had a bunch of babies and i tried to bring it to the school and they got lost in my apartment. then i moved and i don't know where they are. >> some guy in the apartment caught a mouse and gave it to you and told you it was a russian dwarf mouse. >> can i tell you, there is a big christmas present coming our way next year. new president. >> injected it right in there. we got to take break. what's your favorite christmas movie? mine is "wild christmas nights in tijuana" i made it myself. bob will tell us his g rated choice. after all, it is christmas.

taken care of, these are anonymous donors that are paying off lay away accounts. this one gentleman, when he said no, you can't pay for mine and the woman said, i'm actually going to pay for it, he burst into tears, which is quite lovely. what do you make of it? >> i think it's fantastic. it's what we should all do. there are so many bad stories, this is a great story. >> i remember last year hearing about a waitress who had been down on her luck and she ended up with a tip of $5,000 tip. anonymous. it was cash. she never knew who left it. >> probably was greg, too. i want to tell awe true story. every year, a group of us put together christmas presents. we ask our neighbors, there is an orphanage. there are two of them, one in my neighborhood and one in another neighborhood. but they get together to do christmas songs and things every year. we gave all of our christmas presents to these kids in this one orphanage and they found out that the kids in the other orphan age did not get any

christmas presents so they took their presents, divided they would up and walked them over. how cool is that? it was just wonderful. each got two presents and they confided them up -- divided them up and sent them. with my kids, i'd say to my kids, if you get a new toy, you put an old toy in that bucket for poor kids. i had to teach them. >> sometimes the old toys are the best. >> teachable moment. >> kimberly, what kind of charitable thing have you heard about christmas that makes you happy? >> i always like to go and work and give back, whether it's working in kind of like a soup kitchen, i've done it for thanksgiving, for christmas. people really appreciate it. it's nice to see people that don't have very much being so appreciative of giving a little bit of time. it's really the spirit of what it's supposed to be about. don't make it about yourself and what you can get. what can you coo to make the lives of others better and that's important to remember and reflect on this time of year. not just during this time, but especially at the holiday.

>> americans are quite generous people. >> obviously my favorite charity is help a co-ed, usually what will happen -- i don't just do it over the holidays, i'll do it all year, i'll rent a car action i'll drop into some campus, wander in there, ask a co-ed out to lunch, buy them some lunch. >> do they still call them co-eds? >> yes, they do. sometimes i'm forced to leave abruptly when they recognize me. but i'm just a giving person. >> are you part of this 68% -- or 65% of people who either give money or volunteer? >> when was the last time you volunteered? >> wait a second. this is what's disgusting about charity. you don't do it to tell people about it! okay? >> you just did. >> i was joking. >> some people do. >> here is the secret about charity. the secret is the more successful you are, the more money you can give and the problem with the way our culture is right now is we punish the wealthy and the wealthy are often the biggest givers.

>> there is a very well-known personality on this network who last year anonymously, who will remain anonymous took care of ten kids in my son's school who could not afford their tuition and that one person put up their money. >> that was me again, bob. >> i can't say who it was. but it weren't you, brother. >> can i mouth it? >> i worked with my family -- my family worked with the newark beth israel ward for the most severely ill children. started a toy drive and overwhelming support came in. but now these guys, we're going to put it up again later. there is something about this newark boys chorus, it's a school and an arts program of the they go to school. they graduate nearly 100%. >> unbelievable. >> nearly 100% of the kids in the district in newark who graduate about a 30% rate. >> we got to spend some time with them earlier before the show and if you were a fourth grade teacher, you would want these boys in your display, everybody out there, eric is
