her pancreatic cancer fight now. so stick around for that. "fox & friends".com. >> brian: watch us tomorrow, our guest, emeril legasse, michelle malkin and bob massi and newt gingrich. a fox news alert. a major endorsement expected today for mitt romney. fox news confirming arizona senator john mccain will announce his support for romney today in new hampshire. mccain has huge backing in that race. new hampshire votes next tuesday. more details on that item as we get them here. there is more breaking news. michele bachmann will hold a press conference this morning. we're awaiting bachmann in iowa. she has canceled a trip that had been scheduled for south carolina after finishing in sixth place last night. her campaign manager late last night telling the associated press he was not sure if bachmann's campaign could continue. details on both the stories

as we get them here in "america's newsroom". so it is 9:00 in new york and wherever you are, how about that for some drama? then there is this. eight votes determine the winner of the iowa caucus with mitt romney proving victorious in the end. this from last night, 12:30 a.m. roll it. >> this is campaign night where america wins. we're going to change the white house and get america back on track. [cheers and applause] s. bill: former massachusetts governor, edging out former pennsylvania senator rick santorum. santorum surging in the polls at just the right time and promising now he is ready for a fight. >> game on. in "america's newsroom" and a big welcome back to jamie colby. martha is working later for megyn getting on the big bird coming back to new york. >> she got a little rest jamie: i'm jamie coal by in for martha. the republican county chairwoman was woken up in a panic by a friend pounding on her windows. can you imagine the friend telling her the state party needed missing results from a precinct. bill: 53 for romney and 33 for santorum. sleep deprived john roberts in iowa this morning. turns out rick santorum's surge was real in the end. john, good morning. >> reporter: it shows awe couple things, bill. what a difference a week makes. shows you value of every vote. iowa will always end up surprising you in the end. what a rocket ride for rick
6:03 am
santorum. mitt romney might have won the actual caucuses. rick santorum came out the big winner or story of the night. a week ago he was polling 10%. he captured 25% of the vote last night. in the address that owe gave to his supporters he seemed genuinely thrilled about it. >> by standing up and being bold and leading, leading with that burden and responsibility you have to be first you have taken the first step of taking back this country. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: what really put rick san diego on the map was that 99 county tour he made a couple weeks leading into the caucuses. he got the inspiration in the keep going he said that in the speech from his 3 1/ 1/2-year-old daughter, isabella. she has chromosome 18 disorder. usually children with that disorder don't live to see their third birthday.
6:04 am
bill: that is remarkable story. ron paul did well last night finishing third. where does he stand, john? >> reporter: it was a very strong finish for ron paul. for a lot of the early part he was actually leading, bill. he comes out a real solid third which is a great place to be as he heads into new hampshire and south carolina after that. don't forget ron paul, movement. we'll hear a lot more about the ron paul nation and money bombs going forward. even though most political experts say he doesn't have much of a chance becoming the nominee. ron paul told the crowd last night he will stay in it for a while. >> we have tremendous opportunity to continue this momentum t won't be long that there is going to be a election up in new hampshire and believe me, this momentum is going to continue and this movement is going to continue and we are going to keep scoring. >> reporter: i was talking to ron paul just a few minutes ago over breakfast. he does seem genuinely pleased where he ended up last night.
6:05 am
he said he will take a couple days to go back to texas and be in new hampshire ahead of the big debate they have got coming up this weekend. get ready for the all-important primaries on tuesday. bill: there are two debates in the coming week in new hampshire. we're saving the best for last here because mitt romney was the winner. what is he saying about his campaign, the time he spent there, the money he spent and what his chances are now, john? >> reporter: here's the thing for mitt romney. he did come out the winner albeit by eight votes but a question a lot of people are asking how much better could he have done had he paid more attention to iowa? 2008 he blitzed the state. he had a staff of 52. this time around he only had permanent staff of five. he didn't visit the state a whole lot. when you look at the fact if he had been able to extend his lead past that ceiling of 25%, would he go into new hampshire with a head of steam that might lock it up for him early in the contest? because if he does win new hampshire he is going to be the first nonincumbent
6:06 am
republican candidate to win both iowa and new hampshire. he is so far ahead there. he also sort of over the last week really campaigning on, it was almost a presidential campaign. it wouldn't so much taking aim at his opponents as he was president obama and he did again in his speech this morning. >> you were working and i am working and we're all working together because of our passion for this country and our concern it is being led by a president who may be a nice guy but just is over his head. >> reporter: could be a little rough-and-tumble in the coming week going into the new hampshire primary because newt gingrich has apparently taken off the gloves. he is going after mitt romney and going after him hard. there could be a little bit of blood on the streets. bill: we'll keep our eyes and ears open for that, john. terrific work last night and early this morning. thank you, john roberts. jamie: blood on the streets. quite a prediction from john roberts. after a disappointing fifth place finish texas governor rick perry said he will go home to texas to rethink
6:07 am
things. he canceled campaign stops he had scheduled for today in south carolina, home of the third in the nation contest. >> with the voters decision tonight in iowa, i decided to return to texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus, determine whether there is a path forward for myself in this race. jamie: well the perry campaign spokesman said thursday would be the earliest any decision could be made. how about newt gingrich? finishing fourth in iowa but the former house speaker telling his supporters he looks forward to a great debate in the republican party, offering his congrats to rick santorum. >> i want to take just a minute and congratulate a good friend of ours, somebody who i admire and whose family we admire that is rick santorum. he waged a great, positive campaign. [applause] i served with rick. we've had a great relationship over the years.
6:08 am
and i admire the courage, the discipline, the way he focused and i also admire how positive it was. i wish i could say that for all the candidates. jamie: there is one person that newt gingrich didn't congratulate, that was the winner, mitt romney. the two have been sparring in recent days with negative ads. in fact gingrich even calling romney a liar yesterday. bill: a dig at romney too at the end there. how did this work out late last night? on the map behind us we can break it down based on county. what you see here, santorum is the brown color. romney is the red and ron paul is the blue. you see the center part of the state? this is des moines. polk county and dallas county. this is story county up here. polk and dallas, big population centers in iowa. mitt romney did well, much better than he did four years ago in 2008. where did santorum make his inroads? western iowa. all the border counties. that is conservative country
6:09 am
in iowa and santorum really cleaned up. where you see in a moment four years ago, mitt romney did very well this part of the state. on the eastern part of the state over by the illinois, illinois border over here, this is where mitt romney did very well four years ago but now you see a combination of ron paul, mitt romney and to a lesser extent rick santorum taking some of this territory from last night. go back four years ago, we can take this map and compare to how the results turned out for mitt romney when he faced up against mike huckabee. huckabee in the deep red. romney in the light red in the map behind us. center part of the state, huckabee dominated. this is only area in the center part of the state where mitt romney won four years ago. a different story last night. again the western section that he did so well in four years ago was really cut into this year by rick santorum. likewise on the east side, not just santorum over here but also by ron paul. i want to bring in steve
6:10 am
hays who hasn't gone to bed yet. he is live in des moines. how do you see it? >> do i look that bad? bill: no you look great by the way. good morning to you. what do you see? >> fascinating. what an unbelievable story rick santorum has had. two or three weeks ago this is somebody who was in single digits and roared to a comeback. look at entrance polls last night, 65% of those who sided in the last week or actual caucus day, 65% broke for rick santorum. that tells you everything you need to know about the kind of momentum he was generating here in iowa and the kind of momentum he hopes to carry forward into new hampshire, south carol -- carolina and florida. bill: new hampshire will be a challenge for santorum. huckabee won iowa and went to new hampshire and only picked up a 11% of the vote. that will be a big hurdle to climb. there is breaking news this morning. michele bachmann has a press
6:11 am
conference a little later. we're waiting on that. this endorsement we expect from john mccain in favor of mitt romney in new hampshire. that could be the story of today that has stolen this afternoon for romney's favor. >> it sure could. there is a history between john mccain and rick santorum. back in 2008 you may remember, rick santorum made it his mission, his word, his mission to stop john mccain's momentum once it looked like john mccain would beat mitt romney for the nomination. santorum came in. he appeared on conservative talk radio across the country. he told stories working with john mccain. how difficult it was to bring in john mccain the maverick, when santorum was in policy leadership on the issues senate republicans was wanting to push. santorum told that story to anybody and everybody who would listen to him. mccain took offense to that earlier two years when santorum wasn't doing well in his race against bob
6:12 am
casey. he talked to john mccain. come to pennsylvania. help me establish my moderate credentials come campaign for me. he did. he honored that request. he campaigned for him. santorum's campaign made little reference to george w. bush in the final month of that campaign. made great mention of john mccain. made his endorsement on the website. mccain felt burned by santorum. bill: that is interesting. there is so much history between all these men. 15 seconds or less. how is the romney team feeling now six days ahead of new hampshire's primary bring? >> i think they're both happy and sad. on the one hand they're happy rick perry and newt gingrich either out of the race or severely damaged. i think they're in a sense pleased to be focused with what looks like a won one one battle. on the other hand rick santorum came out of nowhere. he is surging. he clearly has momentum. he has low expectations in new hampshire. if he does well there he will be exceeding those expectations and then
6:13 am
santorum has a good ground game and some support in south carolina. i think we're likely to see the poll numbers for santorum in south carolina when we have polling coming up showing him doing much better than expected particularly if rick perry gets out of the race. bill: steve, see you in new york soon. get some sleep. >> thanks, bill. bill: stephen hayes, analysis from des moines. 9:13 we're just getting rolling. >> we are just getting rolling. will be action-packed two hours like last night. those are many of the stories we're following this morning inside "america's newsroom." five presidential hopefuls suing virginia to get on the gop ballot. judge andrew napolitano on whether or not they have a case. bill: look at the man of the hour too, rick santorum hitting stride at just the right time. what does this tell us what iowa voters were looking for in a republican candidate last night? the state's party chairman joins us live, next. >> we will be in new hampshire. we'll leave tomorrow.
6:14 am
we'll spend our time there. with your help and god's grace we'll have another fun night a week from now. god bless you. 6:16 am
jamie: fox news alert and this is out of the michele bachmann campaign. we hear she will being holding an 11:00 a.m. eastern news conference. she has also canceled a trip she had planned to south carolina but last night bachmann vowed to soldier on, telling her
6:17 am
supporters she is the only con conservative that can beat president obama. >> i believe i am the true conservative who can and will defeat barack obama in 2012. [cheers and applause] over the next few days. be prepared, the pundits in the press will again try to pick the nominee based on tonight's results but there are many more chapters to be written on the path to our party's nomination and i prefer to let the people of the country decide who will represent us. jamie: and actually bachmann got off to a really strong start in iowa at the ames straw poll. she actually won that over the summer, bill. bill: also her home state of iowa too. i imagine this is hugely disappointing to her. but we'll talk to ed rollins in 30 minutes, get more reaction on bachmann going forward and rick perry who apparently is going back to texas for now. all that is coming up. mitt romney wins the closest in iowa caucus history. take a look, eight votes between romney and rick santorum, 25% to 25%.
6:18 am
the man. the results show support evenly split there so what was iowa looking for in a republican candidate? the republican party chairman is matt strawn. good morning to you, sir. late night for us last night. >> good morning, bill. bill: we have somewhat we call entrance polling. this is what we did last night for people that showed up to the caucus. this is what we found, truly fascinating. what are romney strengths? 48%, almost half, say he can beat obama. then we asked them about santorum's strengths. the late deciders for rick santorum, 35%. the evangelicals, strong showing here at 33% which is less than what huckabee received from the evangelicals four years ago. matt, how does this shake down. >> that was one of the open questions going into caucus last night when we had two out of every five caucus-goers that could have changed their minds. there was some coalescing support behind rick santorum even though he didn't reach the huckabee numbers.
6:19 am
he was able in the last 24 hours to close that gap and coalesce support. what you see happened in iowa, what happens last night mirrors the debate we're having nationally as republicans to decide what candidate we want to go into the general election that can prosecute the case of a failed obama administration and also aggressively articulate governing republican philosophyes are better to address the challenges facing america. we're just the first step in the process. bill: apologize for the interruption. want our viewers to see what the issues were last night for those in iowa. on the screen, matt, we found the economy at 42%. your unemployment rate is rather impressive. you're about 5, 5 1/2% which is well below the national average. what does the economy issue mean in iowa? is it jobs? is it fiscal responsibility or taxes or government spending or is it all of that? >> you would lump that all together. when you look at the ads, for example, that ron paul, that mitt romney were running in the waning days,
6:20 am
it was about incredible spending increases we've seen in washington and how we get our arms around the $15 trillion in national debt aaccumulated. iowans understand, at the end of the day more debt we have the more it chokes private sector investment. even though iowa is doing well relative to the rest of the country, agriculture is still going strong, there are looming financial obligations that quite frankly we've seen the president kick the can down the road and we're looking for bold leadership and i think we'll end up with great leadership coming out of the caucus process and going into the primary caucus. even though we were very divided last night i know we'll be unified to defeat barack obama in this state come november. bill: iowans have done their job. matt, thank you for your time this morning. i want to share with our viewsers one more entrance poll we had last night. what is the most important candidate quality you're looking for? 31% said can they beat
6:21 am
president obama. that goes to the romney vote. matt strawn, we'll be in touch down the road. congratulations to folks in iowa. your job is done for now. four more years to chill out. >> appreciate it. bill: 20 minutes past the hour. jamie: not sure they chill out especially this time of year. the fight for iowa is now history but the battle to get on the ballot in another state has just gotten started. five gop candidates suing for the right to run in virginia's republican primary. the question whether or not they have a valid legal state. judge napolitano with that. bill: we're assessing campaigns this morning. rick perry, michele bachmann. we're waiting on michele bachmann. she canceled an event in south carolina. is the republican field about to get a wee bit smaller. wield find out after this. >> once again the people's voice will be heard there and make no mistake as i have said often and early on this campaign, barack obama will a one-term president. did you hear that, america? you heard it here from iowa.

bill: again at 25 minutes past the hour. want to remind you, fox news confirming this morning. a major endorsement for the iowa winner, mitt romney. arizona senator john mccain will announce his support for romney later today in new hampshire. this only less than a week really before the primary in new hampshire. that is second on the calendar during this nominating process a bit earlier today on "fox and friends" romney did not confirm the news but said it would be big indeed. >> i'm pretty pleased that looks to be the case. john mccain of course is beloved in many parts of the country, particularly new hampshire.
6:26 am
some call him mr. new hampshire. so if in fact he makes announcement today, that would be big for me in a state that he knows very, very well. bill: very well. mccain won the new hampshire primary twice, including four years ago in '08 and went on to beat romney and earn the republican presidential nomination. more fuse -- news on that as we get it. here is jaimie. jamie: sounds good, bill. the battle foreiowa is over but the fight to get on virginia's ballot is heating up. rick santorum, rick perry, newt gingrich, michele bachmann and jon huntsman failed to meet the election requirements and now they're suing. judge andrew napolitano is the host of "freedom watch" on the fox business network. >> jamie. jamie: you've been talking about this for sure but will it be moot possibly if rick perry reanalyzes what he wants to do? but the question is, just as a concept could they retroactively changed this rule to allow them on ballot
6:27 am
with signatures they have? >> it would be almost impossible under the constitution to change it retroactively. they could have changed it if this lawsuit was filed before the signatures were due by arguing that the requirements imposed by the state were so burdensome that it somehow violated some federal constitutional right. i don't know what the right would be because the burdens were equally imposed on all of the candidates. but with the deadline having passed and only two of candidates, governor romney and congressman paul having met the deadline, it is nearly impossible for a federal court to find that those regulations were so invalid, so unconstitutional that they should be changed retroactively and the others should automatically be admitted. as for governor perry, he is the original and initial plaintiff. if he decides not to run, there are still four more plaintiff, the candidates whose names you just mentioned. jamie: the federal courts are reluctant to get involved with a state law like this?
6:28 am
>> yes, the federal courts are generally reluctant to overturn a state law that has to do with management of some function of state government. years ago these primaries were run by the parties not by the government and the parties paid the state, they rented the state, they rented the state's voting machines and they rented the state's voting places. now these primaries are run by the government. why that happened is a function of history and money but the fact that they are run by the government means these are government regulations, not political party rules. and the courts are reluctant to interfere in a government managing its state unless what the government is doing is so obviously unconstitutional that nobody could justify it. jamie: that is interesting though because a lot of what has been talked about in this election campaign is the federal government getting involved in a lot of things that a lot of people on the state level would prefer they mind their business on. >> well, it is interesting. governor perry's lawyers in my view did the right thing
6:29 am
going to federal court. a state judge in virginia would have thrown the case out the minute it was filed. a federal judge will look at it qualifily but ultimately will say this is not the business of the federal government. if you don't don't like the laws, elect people that can change the law. don't look to the court retroactively. jamie: the attorney general seems to have changed his position. >> the federal judge yesterday said to attorney general ken cuccinelli, who we know, he has been on fox many times with all of us, you have criticized this law, can you defend it? basically he will file a document in court saying i criticized it as a private person but as the chief law enforcement officer of the commonwealth of virginia, yes, i can defend it. jamie: has he got it right and do you think ultimately will it be changed because it is considered one of the strictest of any state? in terms of burdens imposed on candidates i think it is absurd. in terms of changing retroactively i don't think it will be changed.
6:30 am
i don't think the courts will force a change. i think the legislature will change it next time around. jamie: there is your prediction. >> i don't always come through threw on these prediction. >> i rely on your opinion. >> 8:00. ron paul with us at the top of the show. bill: there you go. breaking news there then. >> thank you. bill: more political news in a moment here. confession from a suspect in a string of firebombing. surveillance helped police make an arrest. it worked. the suspect is talking and what he is saying in minutes. also, jamie? jamie: mitt romney wasting no time taking aim squarely at president obama. >> four years ago tonight he was giving a victory celebration speech here in des moines and he had been going across the state making all sorts of promises. the gap between his promises fou[óñi years agoñi andxd his performance is asñi great as anything i have everñi seen in myñr lifeñiñi so, this is delicious

6:35 am
>> well he is running a national campaign because in order to beat barack obama you have to do this from coast to coast and so his message about jobs and the economy, getting people back to work, about undoing mess of obamacare, undoing the mess this president put us in it is about jobs and economy. given mitt romney's success four years as a governor, more importantly four years success in private sector, he told every stop in iowa, takes somebody who actually had a job to help create jobs. so, it worked well here in iowa and i think it will work exceptionally well in every state he goes to. jamie: clearly your reference the fact he held a job and run a business is the fact that president obama has not necessarily had similar experience. so my question for you is, how will governor romney make that point? do you expect negative ads to continue? will he now go toward the president in his comments more as he has basically
6:36 am
included the other candidates when it came to iowa? >> yeah. no, absolutely. his message is a national one. it is talking to voters from coast to coast and really is focused on the contrast with barack obama. the reality is the economy is not doing nearly as well. this is a president that has really over the course of time tripled our national debt. we can't sustain that. and so the reason people i think are attracted to mitt romney, remember he was only here in iowa 18 days. spent less than 2 million dollars. compare and contrast that to four years ago. he had i think great success. that message will translate into new hampshire and south carolina and florida and on ward. jamie: some of the entrance polls, congressman, that we took a look at say folks in iowa wanted someone that could beat barack obama. that was one of their priorities. what lessons were learned by the campaign in iowa that will improve, in your opinion, the chances that mitt romney could take on president obama if he gets
6:37 am
the nomination and win? >> the more and more people get to know mitt romney his family and his wife ann and these great wonderful kids but his message of success and how we'll turn the economy around. he spent a considerable amount of time campaigning in lots of different states. iowa was one of them. but as he met i was on the bus with him. we met from stop to stop to stop. he stalked about a need for strong national defense but spent most of the time talking about how to get the country back on its financial footing. right now it is totally unsustainable and everybody knows that. a lot of candidates were comparing and contrasting themselves to other republicans you see mitt romney trying to take on the president. people look at debates that have happened they have been consensus that mitt romney has won those. people will see that mitt romney is in the best position to beat barack obama. jamie: congressman, i have to leave it there. very good to see you this morning. >> thank you. jamie: i'm sure your enthusiasm is shared by the campaign this morning. thank you. >> absolutely. thanks. bill: as we move forward
