frontrunner. before anyone hands the prize to romney flashback four years, 24 hours before the new hampshire vote, a guy name barack obama on the democratic side was also leading by 13 points. but when the votes were counted on tuesday need someone else was giving the big speech. >> i come tonight with a very, very full heart -- [cheering] >> -- and i want especially to thank new hampshire over the last week i listened to you, and in the process i found my own voice. remember ta moment. she was down 13 points going into the race, tuesday night comes, what a turn around for her. and now we see according to the suffolk poll mitt romney ahead 13 points over ron paul. is it likely to result the same way? i mean how long a shot is that? >> reporter: it's a long shot, but it's the kind of shots that new hampshire citizens love to make. they are onery on props, they don't follow the conventional wisdom and they don't do what the iowans tell them. they like to have their own voice in this process. hillary rodham clinton was knocked off course in iowa, new hampshire was restorative to her. john edwards had been marginalized in iowa. and this was her trying to get back on track. mitt romney's greatest advantage is that the field is so divided that you have two sort of conservative alternatives in

rick santorum and newt gingrich duke it out. then you have jon huntsman who is trying to be the rick santorum of new hampshire. he's put a lot of time on the ground, he's been here the whole time. he's telling them, make a statement with me. and then there is ron paul, whose numbers are going up, and you see a lot of support for him, independents can vote here and republicans if they want to send a message, nothing speaks clearer in terms of wanting to be outspoken in their conservatism than ron paul. megyn: this is the fifth day in a row that mitt romney has fallen in the overnight tracking of this poll. what does that tell you? >> reporter: it tells you that as you get closer to the end, and as they get ready to vote, what the folks here have to be thinking about is this. look, it's a wasted vote to vote for somebody who is going to win any way you may feel that way. if you want to make a statement why not say something different. and they do not like to be part of some coronation, and they do not want to be seen as taken for granted. you see mitt romney out today, he's hustling, he's got his earn it campaign. he's doing everything he can to

let new hampshire know he's not taking foam author granted. even a close victory if he's not well into double digits in his victory this is really a defeat for mitt romney here in new hampshire. megyn: who is likely to benefit. you say ron paul is going up. is new hampshire really going to vote for ron paul to win this primarily. >> reporter: i think there is a ceiling in ron paul's support. jon huntsman is the guy with some movement on the ball right now. easy round the state, made his pitch here. he has a socially moderate fiscally conservative package that a lot of new hampshire voters might like, sort of an alternative mitt romney. he could definitely be the beneficiary. megyn: just when you think you know what is going to happen in new hampshire, they surprise us. new hampshire is the first primary and will stay that way. that is set in state law here. richard nixon won the phoebgs nemost new hampshire

plot to attack several sites in tampa, florida. authorities say he is a naturalized u.s. citizen who was born in kosovo. they describe him as an islamic extremist who allegedly gave an undercover agent a $500 payment for several items needed to car rye out the attack including ak47 and home-made explosive grenades. major developments out of iran this weekend have experts fearing the worst. diplomats confirming that teheran is enriching uranium in special labs deep underground, bringing them one spep closer to nuclear weapon production. the lab is apparently a churning out uranium that is four to five times more pure than what their main plants already make, much closer to weapons grade and not the kind of material that would ever be used in a nuclear power plant. of course iran says it's pursuing its nuclear efforts for energy purposes . still no evidence, though, that a single war head has actually been produced.

and on top of that news it looks like iran has just sentenced and american man to death. a michigan native found guilty on charges of spying for the cia. iran says the man received special training in the u.s. as a former marine before embarking on his alleged intelligence mission. his family says he is innocent, and that his travel plans were a lot less sinister. amy kellogg has more live in london, amy. >> reporter: the state department is looking for answers as we speak. someone just pointed out to me that what is going on with iran, megyn is really more about saber rattling. the islam particular republic has switched to a low intensity defensive posture because it feels the pressure mounting against it now. what has been happening with the man sentenced to do, an eye rainy american is just the latest example. apparently as you mentioned, michigan native, born in

arizona. iran claims he was sent by the cia to infiltrate that country's intelligence and destabilize the country. his family says he was visiting grandparents. the state department is saying it's trying to find out if this fact he really did get this death sentence, saying if true they condemn it in the strongest possible terms. they say that the allegations that the man worked for or was sent by the cia on a mission in iran is patently false and noted that iran has a history of falsely accusing people of being spies and holding americans in iran for political reasons. the man did work for the marines for some time as an arabic translator, was currently working as a contractor in qatar. the thing is at this point he has who *t not had any access to lawyers and not had access to the swiss diplomats in teheran who represent us in that country with which we have no ties. megyn: tensions are flaring as the gop candidates crisscross

megyn: new video coming in of a red-hot exchange in new hampshire this morning. mitt romney and the union rep going at it over the government bail out of general motors. listen. >> how can you say that those people who come from your own state of michigan would have been better off under bankruptcy where they would have really very likely lost their jobs instead of where they are today, one again the number one auto company in the united states. >> under my plan general motors would have shed its excess costs, the workers would have had their jobs. we would have had a general motors which is on the same footing we have right now but instead of being owned by the uaw who have been be contributors to the democrat particular efforts, and the

president's efrtd it would have been owned under the law by the people who normally have a right to own enterprises that go through bankruptcy. we'd have a strong and vibrant general motors. i believe the market works better than a president stepping in to take care of his friends. megyn: mitt romney quickly left the stage afterward and his rivals and the democrats are shadowing every move looking for an opportunity to hurt the current frontrunner. joining me now john senunu, former governor of new hampshire and a mitt romney supporter. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. megyn: some folks like that woman are trying to paint governor romney for the rich and oblivious of the little guy, of workers, of general motor workers and somebody who spent his life rich, helping the rich, helps bain capital folks get richer. how do you defend against that. >> as he pointed out there, there would be no difference in the number of jobs, the uaw

would not be the principle owner of general motors. the question is should the unions have owned it or should it have gone to hose who length money to general motors? the union obviously wants to keep their hold. megyn: what do you say to folks who have this image of mitt romney as a bain capital guy, a wall street guy. megyn: a guy who was a conservative governor in massachusetts, a guy who understands how to create jobs and how to save the country. i think that is a good image. megyn: they say that he doesn't know how to create jobs, he knows how to go in and make money for investors. that's when you do when you run a venture capital firm like bain capital. >> those are arguments that come from people that don't understand the free enterprise system. sometimes you have winners, sometimes you have losers. that's an obama argument. what shocks me is you have folks like newt gingrich using obama arguments in this campaign. he got burned on it once before -rpbgs he backed off, now he's desperate again, so he's willing to mouth what obama is going to

say later, he's willing to put it in the mix now. governor romney is doing fine, he's going to do well in new hampshire, he's going to go down to south carolina, he's taking this one step at a time, and we appreciate the fact that everybody would like it to be closer, but i'm afraid they are going to see that governor romney is going to do quite well in new hampshire. megyn: oh, really, so you're casting that out. we talked at the top of the show with chris stirewalt about the latest suffolk poll that shows him down to a 13-point lead which is still good to him, but it's smaller, shrinking and it's the same lead barack obama had over hillary rodham clinton last time around and hillary rodham clinton won this state. >> in 1988 when george bush beat bob doyle he beat him 38-29. 9 points it was considered a huge win, and that was virtually a two-person race. now we have six people in the race. there will be some distribution of votes at the bottom that affect the arithmetic but i think you're looking at about the same kind of a race. megyn: what do you say the margin has to be for mitt romney

to emerge with momentum, with people believing there i. >> at least eight votes coming out of iowa. megyn: you heard stirewalt say with lens double digits. >> who is that. megyn: he's our.com editor. >> consider where it comes from. >> he's our.com editor. >> it's his job to tell you stuff like that. a win is a win. if it's similar to historic win has have been strong wins coming out of new hampshire that's what you want. you can't beat history and arithmetic. megyn: how troubling is jon huntsman's presence in this race in this state? >> well, he's lived here for the last six months. you can't run a presidential campaign living in 50 states, six months at a time, you get quite old doing that. megyn: you think he's sort of the rick santorum of new hampshire in terms of the ground game he's put out, but do you think it's going to have the same affect on him.

>> i don't think it will have the same effect at all. he may come in third but a distant third. megyn: will romney appeal to the more conservative voters -- >> excuse me, if huntsman comes in third, that means gingrich and santorum will be coming in fourth and fifth. megyn: why do you want romney over those guys. >> romney is the true conservative. he cut spending, taxes, he stood with the right to life people when there was terrible legislation in massachusetts that he vetoed. he stood with the family values people against the supreme court's decision in massachusetts. he kept massachusetts out of cap and trade, regional greenhouse gas initiative an knows how to make things happen. megyn: governor senunu, thank you, sir, we look forward to seeing how the state does the first in the nation primary tomorrow night. all the best sir. we are learning more today about rick santorum's plan for cutti growing jobs and cutting government spending, less than

megyn: it's their land but the epa says they are not allowed to build on it forcing one idaho

couple to either put the brakes on their dream home or face thousands of dollars in fines. now the supreme court will have the final say. shannon bream is live at the high court this afternoon. hey, shannon. >> reporter: well this all started when this couple brought a piece of land in idaho, started prepping it for construction. government officials showed up and told them to stop everything. they issued a compliance order telling them they had to restore the land to the way it was before they started work or face finest of $37,500 per day. they said they couldn't find any water on their land, and so they asked the epa for a hearing. that was die need, so they decided to go to court. today they tell me they are fighting this battle not only for thepbls bu themselves but for other people across the country who are fighting back against powerful government agencies. >> our story is david versus goliath. we are a hard-working couple fighting the federal pwraour rocbureaucracy with them having unlimited resources.

the house is on three sides and county road is on suicides. we started laying gravel for the foundation, we were nearly done with this when we were blindsided by the u.s. environmental protection agency. three officials showed up out of the blue and ordered us to stop work. >> reporter: the epa says this should have been handled administratively, it never should have gone to court. here is part of what they argued in their brief to the supreme court. they say, quote to treat a compliance order as triggering a constitutional right to immediate judicial review where no immediate access to the court system previously existed would deter broad range of agency kpheupbgss. the agency is hoping that the court will throw it out all together. most of the justice is seem sympathetic to the couple's argument. their land has been sitting there dormant for more than four years while they've waged this battle. megyn: thank you. when life or death decisions hung in the balance, commander jim lovell came up with calculations that helped save the crew of apollo 13. when he originally went to sell his own notes nasa said no way.

megyn: a couple of developing stories we are following for you now, including a british airways jet making an emergency landing after both pilots nearly pass out. the flight had taken off from london when the pilot reported sealing light-headed at 20,000 feet. that is not good. both pilots put on oxygen masks and managed to land the plane safely. the incident under investigation. police in montana looking for a missing teacher who vanished while on a weekend run near her home. 43-year-old sheri arnold last seen early saturday morning. hundreds of volunteers skouing the area, one of them finding a running shoe that likely belongs to arnold. in montana eight people remain hospitalized, badly injured after their bus crashed on an icy highway. through people died in the crash. police say the tour bus was

going too fast for the harsh winter conditions. mitt romney may be leading right now in new hampshire, but rick santorum is coming on strong in the final 48 hours. so we wanted to look more closely at his plans for the issue americans care most about, and that is this economy. senator santorum says if he is elected he will reduce nondefense discretionary spending to the same levels of 2008. he says he will eliminate both agriculture and energy subsidies and wants to block the implementation of the president's healthcare overhaul saying that will potentially save billions, he is promising to eliminate funds for u.n. activities that undermine our interests. don't take my word for it, here now former pennsylvania senator and 2012 presidential candidate rick santorum. thank you so much for being here. >> thank you for having me. it's great to be with me on the set. megyn: did you ever think you'd be in this position? >> to be honest with you, we worked very, very hard and we

hoped we would be in this position. we wouldn't have done it if we didn't think we could win. people say, are you running for a cause, i said no i'm running to win. he i think i'm the best person to be president of the united states and i hope the people of iowa will think so, and hopefully we'll get a big bump here out of new hampshire annex seed expectations. megyn: where do you have to land tonight to be happy? >> we started out on i guess the poll -- the day before iowa we were at 3% here, just about a point ahead of rick perry and now we are according to whatever poll you look at, jocking for third or fourth, which is a pretty good place to be. it's better than fifth. megyn: wmur puts you at 11%, although the suffolk poll has you a bit lower. let's talk about your economic program. the "wall street journal" came out of a piece that we recommend to our viewers to check it out. they had a lot of things in there they liked about your proposal. a couple of things they didn't

like. you're going to triple the tax credit for children. right now you get a thousand dollar write off. they say this is social policy masquerading for economics. it does little for growth, rewards taxpayers who have kids and say you are agreeing with liberals on this issue. >> what better way to create growth than having children and people growing up in america and contributing to our economy. megyn: that's a long-range plan. megyn: it's important. if you look at the problems with respect to social security and medicare is we have not done long range planing very well. we are down to a little over two people working for every retiree. 40 years ago we were around 15 people working for every retiree. if you look at what is going on in europe -- megyn: are you really just handing out a thousand dollars a kid? is somebody really going to have a child because they are going to get a thousand dollar rebate from the government? megyn: ar >> are they going to have a child? no. it will make it a lot easier for

them to have children. the more possible till the tax policy is on family the less children collectively you have. you hear this all the time when i go over to europe which has had a very hostile policy toward children. they have a vat tax, they don't do anything to support children. now they are doing baby bonuses for people to have incentives to have children. why because the tax situation was so burdensome on families that people couldn't afford to have childrenment i hear this all the time in america how expensive it is and how the government isn't doing anything to recognize the cost associated with the duty and the responsibility of keeping our civilization going, but for immigration this this country we'd be losing population, and having something there that says we're going to support as a society families who take the hard job of raising children seriously. megyn: a couple of other things i want to get to with you. they talk about the plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 17.5% for most corporations and zero for manufacturers. you recently pointed out that wal-mart doesn't warrant a zero

tax rate because they didn't send jobs overseas. their response was any company who threatens to send jobs overseas should get a lower rate than keeps jobs here. watch mr. obama have fun with that one. >> it's not a matter of threatening. you look in the past 40 years of this country we've got from 21% employee manufacturing to 9%. we've seen jobs go in droves. here we are in manchester, the mills along this river used to be filled with thousands of employees. there aren't any more. they've all moved overseas. wal-mart is not moving over sea, the local bank is not moving overseas. megyn: why should we reward the ones that say i'm getting out of dodge i'm going to put my jobs over in europe and punish the ones here. >> no, everyone is going to get a certificate zero corporate tax. we are going to incentivize companies in this country to grow their businesses, and we'll have companies who ship their products overseas bring them back, and in fact another provision in our bill says if

you made money overseas, and you want to bring that money back to invest it in plant equipment we're not going to charge you a tax on that either. it's an an incentive to create jobs in in country to build the manufacturing base and the people left behind, megyn in this economy have been lower skill workers, manufacturers, blue collar workers who aren't given the opportunity to get good paying jobs, to upgrade skills and be able to rise in society. our plan will do so. our plan is the most aggressive. you want to meet the needs that the folks are concerned that they are out there paddling alone, that they are out there and nobody cares about them. the unemployment rate for blue collar americans are in double digits. we need to have a policy where we're going to rebuild the sector of the economy that has been devastated, that is blue collar workers and we're going to do that. megyn: they say it's going to be impossible to cut without

defense cuts or raising taxes. the only way you could find those savings is massive cuts to medicare. they have a quote saying that will basically be getting rid of federal settings on medicaid, medicare, that is probably not going to fly with the american people. they also said this is so far outside of the plan of realistic this people shouldn't worry about it. >> it gets our spending back down to 18% of gdp. that's where it's been historically since world war 2 roam row. will it require the repeal of obamacare you bet it will. will it require repeal of other programs added on during this administration. yes. will it mak end discretionary spending, you bet it will. will it require reform of entitlement programs, yes. i've been out there talking about medicaid and food stamps and housing programs. we need to cut them, block grant

megyn: new developments today in the battle between nasa and one of the most famous astronauts of all time over a notebook. not just any notebook, the handwritten calculations of apollo 13 commander jim lovell that saved the lives of the three-man crew of the doomed mission. apollo 13 launched on april 11th 1970. two days later an oxygen tank on board exploded crippling the spacecraft. the developing drama was broadcast on television but because the accident sapped the module of power the rest of the story played out in the dark both captivating and terrifying the nation for six long days.

>> we've had a problem here. >> this is houston say again please. >> houston, we've had a problem. >> this is the crew of apollo 13, we send everyone a nice evening. >> we had a pretty large bang. >> there is a bulletin from abc news the apollo 13 spacecraft has had a serious power supply malfunction. at the moment the astronauts are continuing to isolate their trouble. they say the spacecraft is operating on battery power alone. megyn: they were forced to move into the lunar landing module. it was the calculations with commander lovell that you can see him with in this video that were key in guiding the spacecraft back to earth. he recently shoeld th sold the handwritten calculations through an auction company. after the sale nasa stepped in questioning whether lovell owned the checklist and the handwritten notes on it. now the space agency is demanding it back. joining me in an extremely rare

appearance, four astronauts from the apollo program, jim lovell commander of the ill faithed apollo 13 mission along with astronauts, charlie duke the 10th man to walk on the noon, apollo 16, and rusty schweickart who was the first person to test pilot the new lunar module, apollo 9. and gene cernan the last man to watch on the moon. he flew apollo 10 and 17. what an honor for me, the program and fox news to have you all together. thank you so much for being here. jim, let me start with you. you sell this notebook looking to earn some extra money, you're running a restaurant now and nasa steps in and says you don't have the right, that property is ours, and what, we want it back? >> megyn, after 42 years, apollo 13 still has a problem. actually, the notebook is of no significance, but really what it really boils down to is the early days of the apollo

astronauts we took back for our own use and our ownership the flight manuals, artifacts nasa has given us and we've kept them for many years. many of my contemporaries have now given these things to museums, and science centers and universities and colleges with the idea that they transferred ownerships to these various facilities. now, all of a sudden because the last thing i had in my drawer was this little checkbook that i was about ready to throw away, and i looked at it and saw that it had some significance, i decided to see if someone wanted it at an auction and that's what started the whole ball going. we had a very good meeting with the administrator, charlie bolden today, hopefully we can resolve this problem, this misunderstanding and come to some conclusion that will be equitable to all. megyn: it certainly drew interest because it sold for $388,000 which was 15 times its initial list price. as throw a tphautastronauts are

not exactly the rich e richest guys in terms of financial gains, in other gains maybe. for 40 years nasa has been letting you guys keep this stuff and it came as a big surprise to you to learn that they were asserting claim to some of this memorabilia. >> i was shocked personally. you're right, megyn, for 40 years we -- over 40 years in some of our cases we've had these items in our possession. nasa knew, and the original management gave them to us. a lot of the things we gave away. in fact i was in with president nixon and john young and we gave him a piece of the apollo lunar surface equipment and the nasa administrator was standing right there and he had no qualms.

for seven administrators since a lot of these items have been on auction there has been basically no protest. so hopefully after our meeting today we'll have some positive, equitable resolution. megyn: gene, what do you think led nasa to do this in the first place? >> megyn, i don't know. the rest of us, like charlie, are pretty confused and upset about it all. the first order of business is to get the acknowledgment that that memorabilia, and the deed belongs to us personally. it was given to us, it was transferred to us. we didn't have time for paperwork. we were going to the moon at the time. but i think more than that, megyn, the thing that bothers me, and several of us, is the inc impingement on our personal integrity. for half a century we've had the trust of the american people, and now the trust is being violated, or we're being accused

enjoy it. you guys who went up there as uniformed officers of the united states don't get to keep this stuff. what do you say to that? >> i think in fact there is some question about the issue of ownership, and that's what we came in to talk with nasa about, the administrator this morning. and i have to say that we are all quite happy with the meeting that we had, and we've agreed with charlie bolden, the nasa administrator that we're going to be working together on resolving the issues here. and that issue, of course, is the ownership of the things that were begin to us back there 40-some years ago. and that since then, in fact, have been disposed of by people in various ways in contributions to the astronaut scholarship fund, for example, where the astronaut scholarship fund took an item which we contributed and

auctioned it in order to provide scholarships for young people to study engineering, and science. and there have been millions of dollars given to causes of that kind with these items. and all of that was sort of thrown up in the air with this recent action. so it was rather confusing to us, and, frankly, quite disturbing. but this morning i think we're finding ourselves well on the way to resolution of this misunderstanding. megyn: it's amazing what a little sol louisiana dominican republic a tee osolidarity and media attention affecting national heros as well will do. jim, how do you feel your fellow astronauts, standing shoulder to shoulder with you on this. it isn't just a property that was on the spacecraft but it's your own handwriting, in an effort to save your life and the life of your fellow crew members and it really did play a critical role, and for nasa now

megyn: new information now in a scary scene in a suburban neighborhood in colorado. a woman finds a bag next to her car with her name on it, and it explodes sending her and her husband to the hospital. trace gallagher has more live now from our west coast newsroom. tg. >> reporter: the couple was actually on their way out to buy sporting goods at a sporting goods store. they saw the bag on the porch by the car it had their names on it, the wife grabbed it. they were driving down the block about halfway down, she opened the black, it exploded badly burning her and her husband.

it's the first really big state in which we have had a gop primary. is it realistic if we could get to florida and through florida and still not know who the gop nominee is? >> reporter: just by delegates alone it's not what it used to be. a lot of the delegates this time will be on the back end. it's conceivable for someone to go on a run. but it's all about money and the ability to compete. if you don't have the organization it's tough to imagine you will catch fire enough to catch fire and get those delegates. megyn: how great is the peer pressure. it appears you are not going to win. puff an ax to grind. is there historically big pressure on said candidates to get out and let the party coalesce behind the front runner? >> i think there will be. there is a meeting of evangelicals in texas, they are

solyndra is not the only failure in the administration. again, bain capital, 70% success actual by the numbers. in private capital you invest private money. there are a lot more jobs created at staples and dominoes. so if you do this by the numbers and compare it to the losses. it's almost a trillion dollars in stimulus spent. no shovel-ready jobs. solyndra, $35 million. an empty building in california with it's being auctioned off in the last couple weeks the money goes to the private investor first, not the taxpayer. megyn: why should somebody running a venture capital firm -- their goal is to either make companies profitable or when they realize they are not profitable, to cut the loss and move on. why should he have followed any

you had a place finish in iowa. and then the latest cnn polls showed you as 5% in south carolina, at one time you were the favorite. so there is a real question in some voters' mind whether you can win. what do you say to those folks? >> we have two weeks to share our vision and share our message with them and talk about getting this country back to work. and that's what the focus will be on south carolina, and people are paying attention. i feel good about being able to walk into small businesses. today we were in a host of small businesses, barber shops, and we are going to run a very good on the ground campaign. bobby herald the speaker has endorsed us as have a number of veterans, medal of honor recipient. jim livingston. and navy seal immediate after honor recipient.

individuals like that that matter. understand that our country's future is at hand here. and a president who could get the economy back going and who has the military experience of being not only a pilot in the air force, but the commander-in-chief of the texas state forces for the last 11 years, i think that's a message that will resonate in south carolina. megyn: does it all come down to south carolina for you? at some point if you don't start winning some states, how will you make that decision. i look at the caucus process. new hampshire is new hampshire. i respect the process. south carolina, those first two states have been good about winnowing the candidates down.

south carolina picks presidents. i happen to think whoever wins south carolina will be the nominee. megyn: no one has ever won south carolina without having won new hampshire or iowa. >> there is always a first time. megyn: let's talk about what we are seeing in the news. there seems to be a war of words between the front runner in this state, new hampshire, mitt romney and newt gingrich. gingrich is going after romney on his experience at bain capital. i think this speaks to something larger within the republican party. i would like to know where you stand on it. gingrich is going after romney because he ran this venture capital firm and some companies he invested in did well and some did not do well and jobs were lost. he came out and suggested that this is akin to rich people looting companies. where do you stand on it? do you agree with gingrich?
