people have tried to paint of me since the day barack obama announced that i'm some angry black woman. >> greta: so, is there really conflict between the east wing and the west wing at the white house? fox news' brit hume is here. right now, first of all, and the fight gets fierce, almost blood on the floor in south carolina and the voters are getting in on the strategy. one voter confronted newt gingrich about his attacks on governor romney's business record. >> missed the target on the way you're addressing romney's weaknesses, and i want to beg you to redirect and go after obvious disingenuously conservativism and layoff the corporate versus the pre-market. i think it's nuanced and i-- >> i agree with you, i think that it's, it's an impossible theme to talk about in the fact-- with obama in the back drop. obama makes it impossible to
10:02 pm
talk rationally in that area because he's so deeply into class warfare, automatically you get an echo effect as a reagan republican frankly never occurred to me until it happened and i agree with you entirely. >> greta: so did former speaker gingrich admit he was wrong? we spoke with him a short time ago. mr. speaker, nice to see you, sir. >> greta, great to be with you. >> greta: i'm going to sort out the latest kerr fuffle, that indicates you crossed the lane and governor romney and bain capital, a firm he was a partner in and a statement by your representative that said that you basically the headline is misleading, that you are not backing down on the aggressive attack on bain capital. so, where are we on this? >> well, first of all, i'm not attacking bain capital, i'm questioning mitt romney's judgment.
10:03 pm
i'm questioning mitt romney's decisions. he's the person who has gone around now saying that his business career is one of his two credentials and the other is his governorship. he doesn't want it talk about his record as governor because it's too liberal for republican primary and he doesn't want anybody to talk about his business career. "the washington post" today gave him three pinochios for his claims that he created 100,000 jobs. i've raise theed the question, a totally legitimate question, what about the companies that bain took over that went bankrupt. and this isn't about free enterprise. it's one of those phony efforts to throw up a smoke screen. this isn't about capital, or funds, this is about a person who wants to be president of the united states. he owes the country an explanation, why were certain decisions made, how were they done, what was the consequence, does he stand by them in retrospect. surely if he's going to go
10:04 pm
around running for president and his 25 year business record is proof. he ought to discuss the 25 year business record instead of jumping up, any sign you're attacking free enterprise. that's baloney. i have a long record as a reagan conservative. and work for more jobs not less. more entrepreneurs, not less. in fact, i would say that mitt romney did pretty well under the tax law that i helped ronald reagan pass in 1980. he ought to be happy with my role in expandingree enterprise and role in 199 ooh's as speaker in cutting the capital gains tax. the largest tax cut in american history came while i was speaker, so this is not about free enterprise, this is about one person, mitt romney and what he did. >> greta: okay, so what i understand from what you said is that you're not anti-venture capitalism, that you are pro capitalism. so let me ask you the other question. at what point though, is it sort of fair to sort of clamp down on venture capitalism?
10:05 pm
is there a point where there is a view, that it's not just sort of open season for venture capitalists to do whatever they want? >> i think there's always some boundaries of free market behavior that you watch and you check. so like we did with insider trading where we say, hey, that's breaking the rules and there may well be circumstances. the question here is, various newspapers have reported an entire documentary has been made about three or four cases that are very specific. now, i think governor romney thinks there's nothing there, that he ought to hold a press conference, walk the news media through it, explain how it was done, let people see it. but i find it change that they are so sensitive on this issue, that they've sort of pushed the panic button. but understand me, this is not about free enterprise, this is about the character, values and judgment of a particular person who is running for president of the united states
10:06 pm
and it strikes me, just as with his record as governor where his record's very different from his advertising, he owes the country some candor and he owes the country some facts, all i'm saying. >> greta: all right, the super pacs that run ads against you in iowa and now there's a super pac supporters of you in south carolina and taking a run a the governor romney. it seems and i mean, i underline seems, it seems leak a lot of our critics think it's okay what happened with you with super pac with iowa, but think you're going too far. do you have explanation, why some conservatives are like-- all right, go ahead. >> i think the establishment wants mitt romney to be their candidate. i think the establishment thought it was terrific when there was-- somebody said, i think it was rush today who said that 90% of all the negative ads run last week were run against me. and the whole, out of the whole ticket.
10:07 pm
90%. 45% of all the ads run in iowa were negative ads attacking me and romney already has attack ads up in florida attacking me. so, it seems to be just fine to the establishment when i was the guy beaten you. after all i'm the outsider, change agent, the guy that wants to break up their game. now, all of a sudden when it's their candidate, oh, that's a bad thing to do. i think it's actually kind of funny to watch the very same people who were happy a week ago now suddenly shocked that it's a two way street. as you know, greta, because we talked about it. i spent three weeks, getting attacked and doing nothing, for three weeks i said i'm going to stay positive and i called on governor romney to cut this stuff out and for three weeks, he came back with sort of smart alec comments about having broad shoulders ap taking the heat. all right, now we're in south carolina which is my country. as a georgia conservatives i have a pretty good idea how to

campaign and we'll make it a clear race. a reagan conservative from georgia or a moderate from massachusetts i think that the state produced mike dukakis and john kerry is not going to send into south carolina. and i understand in iowa, but have you boxed yourself in in iowa saying are a he not going to do that and you not directly, but a super pac associated with you is taking a strike at romneyment how do you explain that. >> let me strike a blow for candor. at the end. iowa campaign, calista and i spent a full day talking about this. given the fact that governor romney is prepared to spend millions and millions and millions of dollars in attack ads, i either get out of the race and unilaterally disarm or i have to find a way to draw his record and to layout his liberalism on issues like abortion, gun control, raising taxes, these are all issues
10:09 pm
when the voters understand that, he's going to get remarkably few votes down here because he's not pro-life. he in fact wrote planned parenthood, the largest abortion provider in american into romney care. he has tax paid abortion in ram any care. his administration approved building an abortion clinic for planned parenthood. he appointed pro-abortion judges and these things have to cling to pro-life. so, take that, take there's a site called romney taxes.com. >> greta: and i get the feeling that you're going to fight back and from candor and conversation with-- you're going to fight back? >> we're going to fight back and my only point is i'm open it, i tried to do it the other way, i like the other way better, i'd rather go back to going back to positive, that would mean getting out of the race. i'm not getting out of the race, not going to yield to some guy that can't possibly
10:10 pm
articulate conservativism. i'm going to fight because i think i can defeat barack obama in the debate and offering a straight reagan conservative model the country will really want. >> greta: mr. speaker, thank you, sir, hope you come back soon because this could be a long and interesting race. thank you, sir. and senator rick santorum is in a tight battle with speaker gingrich. there's news tonight from the union leader it's no longer a die and we'll talk with senator santorum about that and as far as we figure out, trying to come out as the conservative alternative to governor romney. good evening, senator and big news in the union leader, it's no longer a tie in new hampshire. >> yeah, we just got word that, with the count that we're now in fourth place, which we're very excited about. you know, we went into new hampshire with five days to campaign. we didn't run a single ad on broadcast television and we frankly spent very little

10:12 pm
governor romney. speaker gingrich says he's going to fight back. i understand you're going to try to stay out of the frey. i'm curious if you think it's fair or right that speaker gingrich fight back? >> look, i think what newt just talked about was going governor romney's record in massachusetts is absolutely dead on. his record in massachusetts is deplorable. it's not a conservative record. it's tax increases, as he mentioned, $50 a taxpayer funded abortions. in romney care, there are a whole host of fees and things that the governor put in place that actually, he even proposed in a democratic legislature wouldn't go along with some of his tax increases. so, you have a-- that's why it's been somewhat, you know, hesitant to go after his bain capital record. i don't want to divert attention away from his horrible record as governor and being a moderate to liberal governor in massachusetts.
10:13 pm
