sinking the ship? and check out this latest cover of "newsweek." the magazine asks why are obama's critics so dumb? greg gutfeld has the answer. "the five" starts right now. ♪ ♪ >> kimberly: our top story tonight, the showdown in south carolina. the primary is this coming saturday. tonight, the presidential hopefuls will square off during fox's debate at 9:00 p.m. eastern. everybody is going to be watching this, eric. it will be exciting to see, weapon the developments today. huntsman is out. a lot of focus on romney. in fact, there is a new poll fox news in particular which has him up 25% and also gallup coming in consistently with that at 23%. that is pretty good. >> eric: down to five now, right? romney. flanked by two on each side. they will all take shots to him. my guess is he won't bother with him and he will go after obama.

that is what he he has been doing. it worked for him. he played a smart defensive strategy the whole time as the only offense going, not inside the tent but across the aisle. i think he is handling it the right way. >> greg: what can't the candidates do to stop romney, you ask me? >> kimberly: i do. thank you for reading my mind. >> greg: they have to treat him like a presidential candidate. ie, the same way a group of ex-girlfriends would treat a guy. they have to come and help him by telling him his faults. that way he can do better against obama. now it's time to look forward at obama and they have to help him. >> dana: like an intervention. you go here is all the things -- >> dana: you leave the toilet seat up, you never listen to me. >> kimberly: that is what newt is doing. helping him. >> dana: this will be the first debate format where romney has to take on the recent attacks against bain capital, venture capital. this is a challenge and an opportunity for him. it will be interesting since gingrich and perry have gotten

attacked from the right for making that insinuation in the first place, how they will handle it as well. will they back off or -- what do you think? >> bob: one thing that is clear to me, after -- the polling is is relatively new. the last couple of days. after run of the bain capital attacks. he seems to have survived it. there seems to have been a backlash, that takes away a great hope card that the other guys can play. the question now is anybody in position to come in second place in front of ron paul? and then claim a ticket to florida? after this is over, with whoever comes in fourth and fifth has to consider getting out of the race. ron paul is not going to play in florida though he will probably come in second, no more than third, because he is looking down the road at four caucuses where his people are organized and he can pick up more delegates than he can in florida. florida is a closed primary. it's -- this time i'm right. closed primary. he got most of his votes in new hampshire from independen

independents. who survives, i don't know. >> eric: it's interesting. south carolina, social conservatives, every looks at how santorum is doing, how ron paul is doing. jerry stein from the "wall street journal" is going to go right after the economy. you know there will be questions on the economy. on romney, how are you going to counter act barack obama's treatment? >> dana: i found something in the fox news poll today i thought was interesting, which is that no other candidate comes close to matching romney when primary voters are asked who is most qualified to manage the economy. he is up 44% on that question. gingrich is at 17%. if the economy is your main issue for the election, he has a leg up. >> kimberly: it gives them an opportunity to shine, because this is romney forte. what people feel he is qualified.

same time, they feel he is venture capitalist, private equity guy. he can have a chance tonight to explain himself. and demonstrate why he is ready to lead. >> dana: he has to say this is the work i did in a private sector and i want the same opportunity i had. i think he has to figure out a way to pivot and make a reason for people to be for him beyond republicans if he is looking farther down the field. >> bob: you made the most important point. before him. the other interesting point about the gallup poll, people that support the romney-obama matchup. obama ahead by one point. it's tied. except for 78-79% of obama supporters are for him. people voting for romney are for him because they are against obama. >> eric: those votes don't count as much? >> bob: they do, but in the

history of the elections you prefer to have people voting for you than against the other guy. >> dana: that is a function of this time in the election. if you look to 2004, when kerry was a similar thing, when the democrats were saying anybody but bush. dean and gephardt tore each other apart in iowa. kerry stepped back in. >> greg: so that raises the question how much does america like obama and don't trust him to do the job? that's where romney has to go. he is not a bad guy, i just don't want him doing the job, as opposed to demonizing him. >> eric: this is a huge issue. south carolina has 50 separate tea partys in south carolina. advocates, spokes people are coalescing around mitt romney, something no one saw coming, not at this point in the game. nikki haley, you heard senator

jim demint's staff endorsing mitt romney. something you never thought you would hear. >> bob: the tea party influence is questionable to say the least in all of this. there is a much bigger election. one thing i worry about if i'm romney, people see the economy turning around for the first time in the polls. consumer confidence is up now for the third straight month. >> eric: what else is up is price of gasoline. it was the most painful in history of keeping records last year. going up from here. >> dana: those poll said they don't think the next generation will be as well off as the current generation. will this come down to question of independence?

we haven't talked to those deserving praise. rick santorum. >> kimberly: no, we have sound. >> dana: we do? i get so excited. >> kimberly: the true conservative candidate. this is what he has to say. then we'll ask dana. >> i am the consistent conservative, someone to stand up for all the issues, not just moral issues but the economic issues. moral crisis of the debt and explosion. stand up against jihaddism and things that are important to conservatives across the country. they saw me as someone with the best chance of winning. >> kimberly: is it going to work, help and how does it play with the numbers for him for the primary? >> dana: santorum has an uphill climb. he has 13% in the fox news poll which is interesting. there are 7% undecided so maybe he has leeway there.

huntsman getting out of the race might help him a little bit. but tonight the debate is for anyone on the fence. they decide who they cast their vote for. could he come in second? >> bob: he could but it won't matter because he those go to florida where cost of running a campaign is prohibitive. >> kimberly: that is a problem. it's all about money. >> greg: hashtag challenge. what is going to happen is santorum's problem is the media. they will tebow him because he comes off of a goofy christian. they will put it in contrast to obama. that is his uphill climb. >> kimberly: eric and then bob. this is becoming evident it

out tonight in the fox news/"wall street journal" debate in myrtle beach, south carolina tonight. hopefully, they focus attention on the most dangerous candidate in the 2012 race. barack obama. take a listen to a guy i think could be standing at the center podium spot if he were running. >> those who underestimate barack obama underestimate him at their own peril. he is as good a politician as i've ever seen. so i think we're getting into a campaign season now and he is really good at it. i think he is very charismatic and i think he is genuine. i think what he said is he believes he believes. that's a very dangerous politician. >> eric: very dangerous indeed, governor. especially when that politician has $1 billion war chest and passion to finish what he started. turning the united states of america in the people's republic of organized american communities. >> dana: the acronym?

p-roc. >> bob: the organized what? >> greg: what poor intern had to put that together for you. >> kimberly: exactly. >> bob: what you really ought to do opposed to your silly flag is think about what christie said. what you have got in obama is a good campaigner. we know that. he has proved it over and over again. i guess the guile frankly with mitt romney, whether it's his background or temperament, the guy does not evoke emotion at all. he is going to go up against somebody who does. i tell you -- >> dana: doesn't do anger really well. >> bob: people who talk about romney now are not inspirational are the republicans, not democrats. christie is right if you take obama and dismiss him, you are making a mistake. right now, obama would thump romney. >> dana: we disagree. >> eric: dangerous, obama. >> kimberly: maybe so dangerous that christie didn't want to run against him.

i think it is dangerous to under estimate him. i don't know that anybody is underestimating him. i don't think romney is. i think mitt romney has a little late-breaking momentum which is good for him going in to this. he has 69% favorability. which i like. i think that is good. tonight he has a chance to make it count and let them pull the rest of the undecided over to him. >> greg: if you look to the rest of the thing that christie said, he said stoves are hot,zy czars are sharp and cats are furry -- scissors are sharp and cats are furry. >> kimberly: profound. >> greg: he got in the white house without any experience behind him. >> bob: what experience does romney have to be in the white house? >> dana: are you kidding? governor. you don't think being governor? >> bob: being governor? >> dana: chairman of the olympics. are you kidding me? >> greg: wait, wait. stop. >> eric: dana, bain capital,

i don't think that obama is inspiring anybody. i don't think americans are looking for entertainer. they want a steady man who knows what they are doing. >> bob: if independents are so negative why is it he only loses to romney by a few points? because romney has terrible problem with independents. >> eric: what bob points sout romney has the experience to be president? we compare the two? >> greg: one of them hired and fired people. it happens a lot in community organizing, right? >> dana: yes. you get moved around. >> dana: landing an oprah interview, even though her show is not on the abc network anymore, whatever it was, it's on her own network. having oprah decide that you are going to get an interview with her is a big deal. if you go to 2000 when al gore and george w. bush did interviews with oprah, a lot of people independents in particular said they looked at the interview and said they liked george bush more in that

one. chris christie comes across in the interview as somebody you could have confidence in. you think maybe in 2016, he might be ready to run. >> eric: funny you say that. he did say that in that interview, that she asked why not now? >> bob: he would be more ready. >> kimberly: i don't think he thinks he can beat obama. >> bob: everybody has the same problems as al gore does, mitt romney. they were cast from the same mold. neither one of them can be inspiring. romney trying to inspire people? >> dana: i am looking for experience and ability. >> bob: what is experience and ability? >> kimberly: this is not prom date and not looking popularity confidence. someone with experience. >> bob: corporate rateer who is boring and ran the state -- corporate raider who is boring and ran the state of massachusetts. >> kimberly: she not a corporate raider. >> dana: he needs better talking points than that. >> bob: we'll roll him. >> eric: successful

government. what i appreciate now about newsweek is they're not even trying to hide it anymore. >> greg: true. >> dana: liberal bias is right there. the thing about this cover when i first heard about it, i thought it doesn't help. they think they are helping president obama. it doesn't help them. the picture makes it look like they are con desendin con desceo people. >> bob: i don't think this is different from the "weekly standard" or right wing newspapers. i think "newsweek" made it clear they're a liberal newspaper. i think obama's critics are dumb. i mean dumb in a nice way. >> greg: nice and stupid >> eric: the centerfold is double page picture of barack obama.

missing. six died. there is 120 americans on the ship. there are two people, gerald and barbara heil, 69 and 70 from minnesota and we from paying for their safe return. there is a question whether the captain caused this. >> greg: this is like a signal to someone they know here. that's what they are criticizing. but the interesting story is on facebook, a woman wrote this thing, she said big greeting to my brother who finally gets to have a holiday on landing. she is the sister of the restaurant boss on the boat. so this is a really -- this is why facebook solves so many crime. if facebook and twitter were around in '70s we would
