account has been inundated with people all races who are asking if your comments are not intended to belittle the racial minority. we saw it from this reaction to your visit in south carolina. a woman asked you why you refer to president obama as the food stamp president. it sounds as if you are seeking to belittle people. >> first of all, juan, the fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by barack obama than any president in american history. [ applause ] now i know among the politically correct you're not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable. i believe every american of every background has been endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness. if that makes liberals unhappy, i will continue to find ways to help poor learn how to get a job, better job and learn some day to own the job. [ applause ]

>> juan: well. >> greg: did you plan this beforehand? >> juan: i said newt, what about it? how can i help your campaign? how can i help you? >> dana: were you surprised by the crowd's reaction? >> juan: i didn't anticipate it, but actually people said to me you know, you could get booed. so i wasn't unaware. what did you think? >> andrea: was his answer enough for you? >> juan: i don't think he answered the question at all. >> eric: can i tell you the e-mail i e-mailed the producers at that very moment? want to read it? >> juan: wait. it says ha, ha, newt just schooled juan. [ laughter ] you know what? it was like a wrestling match or basketball game. you just got dunked on. you know? you got posterrized. >> eric: a lot of us, i'm watching and i'm thinking okay, why is juan making this a racial issue, it's a food stamp issue. it's economy, obama economic failure issue. why did it become raceist?

that is my first question. >> juan: what he said is literally he plans to seek an naacp convention if he was president and he would say to black people you know what stop demanding foot stamps and i'll show you how to demand jobs. that is pretty racial. >> andrea: what is wrong with the message? >> juan: nothing wrong with the message and it's racial. it sounds as if, unless i miss it, black people have been marching for food stamps. >> andrea: it's a powerful message. i would like to see newt gingrich broaden that, to not just -- when he talks about the minorities getting jobs, what about the white kids getting jobs, too? it's a great work ethic for young white adolescent to have a job or young hispanic or young black. this isn't race issue. this an american issue. >> greg: when he talks about it, it's always about menial jobs because he believes menial jobs were important. if he were more of a liberal, he should say kids should get jobs as movie stars. because those are much more glamorous than like mopping

floors. and cleaning toilets. i think he definitely lost the janitor vote. >> juan: let me just tell you something. i'm a guy who grew up in brooklyn. my first job was in the botanical gardens in brooklyn, new york. i didn't know carrots came out of the ground. >> greg: really? >> juan: if you start talking -- i had no clue. i thought they came out of a can. >> andrea: juan! >> juan: if you start talking to a poor black kid, not black, but any poor kid about you know what? you could be a janitor, it feels like oh, that's your horizon in life. i think you have to be a little bit in touch with that. >> he didn't say poor black kids. >> juan: poor kids, lack work ethic. i don't believe that. poor kids in america want money in their pocket and they want opportunity. you know what? we have been through a recession. jobs are at a premium. it's hard to get a job if you are educated white kid. >> dana: i got to meet damon

dunn, african-american guy running for secretary of state in california during in last cycle and i got to -- the hannity show sent me out to interview him and do a package because he had an amazing life story. his father was killed early on, teen mom. raised by his grand parents in texas. tells a story in fifth grade, being a cut-up in class so the teacher kicked him out and he had to stand outside. he had a lollipop and was sucking on it. a janitor came by, african-american as well. he said to the damon dunn, what do you see in there? pointing to the classroom. and damon dunn was ignoring him and wasn't really respectful of him. i'll tell you what i see. 23 young people studying to be your boss. he said that stuck with me my whole life. he had achieved a lot. not only through football, but his business sense had been amazing. i think one of the reactions to crowd was from the crowd, was we need more talk like

that. to help get people -- like philadelphia mayor we talked about the other day, get up off your rear end, pull your pants up. do a good job. we want you to succeed as well. the race part makes me uncomfortable. don't we want everyone to succeed? >> juan: we do want everyone to succeed. what you want to do is suggest we prize workmen in the country, we prize success. but to suggest that somehow the problem is we have a bunch of lazy minority people who want food stamps not work. that is where -- >> i don't think that's what he was saying. i don't think he called anybody lazy. but there is studies that show that the millenials, the younger generation are lazier. everybody gets a trophy generation with the helicopter parents. again, i think it's a message that is good for all kids. >> juan: if he was speaking to millenial convention and i'm going to the convention and say to the young people, that is one thing.

when you say i'm going to the naacp convention -- >> andrea: you said you weren't happy with his answer. what could he have said? >> juan: if he said listen, if i'm talking -- the question was about his statement on work ethic. he said you know what? we are at a point where kids who have a strong work ethic need to get a job and we need to be able to provide them a job. the problem is with president obama's handling of the economy and i find that inadequate, fine. when he starts going on as if you know what? the problem is that these kids don't want to work, that they don't want dollar in their pocket, they don't appreciate what it means to take orders and do a good job. that's when i think people are attacking people. >> eric: newt even prefaced the answer with his own daughter who got a job at 13 and enjoyed having money in her pocket and enjoyed responsibility of a job. i didn't really see it that way. looks like she was trying to say -- >> juan: he talks about obama as food stamp president. >> eric: he is the food stamp president.

obama has resided over the big -- presided over the biggested vance in food stamp usage, number, pure dollar amount, from $60 billion to $83 billion program. the fourth largest entitlement program in america. under obama. it's exploitive. why shouldn't he be -- food stamps, there are more white people on food stamps on black people. >> dana: that is based on need, though. it's not president obama's choice to go on food stamps. that is a formula -- >> juan: hang on. look at jay carney talk about the food stamp president comment. >> is newt gingrich correct calling the president the food stamp president? >> fact of the matter is this country is emerging from the worst recession since the great depression. the result of the recession is

dramatic increase in unemployment -- dramatic increase in the number of people who need assistance, needed assistance. >> juan: eric? >> eric: so are things getting better are they not? a couple of weeks ago, days ago, we hear obama is turning the economy around. see how great things are getting. if they are getting good, why is food stamp usage gone up and -- >> andrea: a couple of hours ago, "wall street journal" posted a story nearly half of u.s. lives and household are receiving government benefit. that is half of the u.s. households. >> juan: by the way, that has been true for some time. >> andrea: here is my issue on it. >> juan: this is a conversation we should -- that's what you said earlier. about the economic stuff. not about him being a -- >> andrea: he is using this as economic stimulus. >> dana: i think greg has a good point. >> greg: the bigger point here is about education. education sucks. when newt gingrich was trying to say is there is no future in a classroom for a kid. so when he can't go to school, where does he go?

he's got two options. selling drugs or getting a job. unfortunately in our country we don't allow kids to get a job at a certain age, but you can sell drugs at any age. that is all he is saying. give them an opportunity besides the street, because the school sucks and the street is deadly. isn't that what he is saying? >> andrea: exactly what he is saying. >> juan: amen. if that is the case, you should interpret for him because that's not what came to my ears. you know, i get upset when i see the kids. they want to be n.b.a. stars rap stars. >> andrea: on the x-boxes. this is all kids. >> juan: they don't value education. that angers me. that's not what i heard. it didn't hear a respectful suggestion, let's -- go to the do this. >> andrea: i was going to say, i heard an economic message from gingrich, too. which was we're paying janitors, the union janitors a lot of money. you can get 37 kids volunteering after school and you don't have to pay the janitor and your teaching kids a lesson. >> dana: janitor is probably feeding the family. >> andrea: feeding it

♪ ♪ >> eric: welcome back to "the five." earning the title of best debate of the 2012 season. last night was filled with g.o.p. highlights, and the topic turned to foreign polic policy, the sparks began to fly. bret baier asked the candidates what would they have done with bin laden in the cross hairs. newt brought people to the street. kill them, he said. romney said the right thing to bin laden was bullet to the head delivered by seal team six. but listen to ron paul on the bin laden kill shot. >> what is wrong with capturing people? why didn't we try to get information from him?

we are accustomed to asking people question, but all of a sudden gone. that's it. if another country does to us what we do to others we're in the going to like it very much. i would say maybe we ought to consider a golden rule in foreign policy. don't do to other nations what we don't want to have them do to us. we endlessly bomb the countries and then we wonder why they get upset with us? >> eric: really? ask ahmadinejad about his golden rule, greg. >> greg: ron paul is so infure rating because moment -- infure rating because moments before he talked about the size of government i'd work for him. then he says this thing. the golden rule says don't do anything to someone you wouldn't want done to them. that implies we deserve 9/11, that we had done something prior to have that happen. that is the implication. that pisses me off.

>> eric: he didn't come out and say it last night but he has implied, more so than implied it was our own fault, 9/11. >> dana: do you think that is why people in the crowd reacted the way they did? >> juan: people in the crowd, remember we are talking about a conservative republican primary crowd all about kill america's enemies. that's why newt knocked the ball out of the park when he said kill them, kill them. i thought he did answer your question when we said we have been bombing people. his argue fire department the liberal side, america has been aggressive foreign policy even from the conservative side we have been involved in nation building, supporting middle east -- >> greg: they would kill us anyway. the logic is they don't like us period. >> juan: to me, the arguement is look, i don't know what you disagree with in term of the foreign policy. all i know is you came over here and attacked us. i understand america going after you on that basis. >> eric: south carolina is a big military base there.

a bunch of military personnel there. that couldn't go over well last night. yet, he still went there. >> dana: he went there. what surprised me if you look at the polls, he still is -- you can't imagine that rick perry is polling below ron paul. recognizing that rick perry, governor perry of texas got in the race a little bit late and ron paul supporters have been organized since 2008 and gearing up for this. i understand that. but for a sitting governor who had military experience and did pretty well last night from all accounts. some people thought he had his best debate, he is still polling in last place. >> greg: i'll tell you why ron paul is up. he is likable. >> dana: really? >> greg: i think he is likable. he has a lot of military support. >> eric: he threw a number out last night. he said he has more than double the contributions, campaign contributions by active military.

do you believe -- >> juan: double to everybody else on the stage. >> this is why you won't see him surging and you will not see him become the nominee. he says things you want to nod your head and say yeah. then the other things the golden rule, it's great rule if you are dealing with a reasonable human being. even reasonable human beings might mistreat you when you treat them nicely. islamic terrorists, i look at the united states of america. brokered peace in ireland and the peace deal between israeli and egyptians. we house u.n. we give billions in foreign aid. they do a lot of good. when you hear ron paul talk like that, you almost equate him with a truther. somebody who thinks it's inside job that thinks we deserve it. >> juan: let me say this on behalf of ron paul. there are republicans i have been in iowa, new hampshire and there are republicans who tell me they like ron paul and think we have been at war too long. ron paul understands you have to get the economy under control. ron paul understands you want to put money in america. that appeals to a libertarian

element in the republican party. especially among young people. not, this is a big surprise to me. i think to you, too. their there are military people who feel that way. >> eric: there is a problem. ahmadinejad is threatened to close the strait of hormuz, oil prices are $102 a barrel again today. as we move up, this is going to -- ron paul can't have this policy of we need to pull out of the middle east. it's our fault that ahmadinejad and iran and certain other radicals in the middle east are mad at us because of the american exceptionalism attitude. we can't have that going into, especially going into an election, right? >> greg: yeah. also, even when he gets on that limb of foreign policy, even his delivery seems off. >> juan: last night i think was his worst debate performance. he was meandering at times. gee, ron. because ron paul can be at times so electric, because he is making points hand's like jeez this is -- >> dana: when he talks about ending the fed, he got huge applause.

why is that? it's easy. here is a republican. he is adorable. the fact is republicans are easier to make fun of than democrats. i know because i was once a lefty who lazily ridiculed republicans for being mean, rich people who hate the poor. why did i fall for that? presented with a problem, requires one-step thinking and writing at another that seems at first glance kind of evil. take this old parable. give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. teach him to fish, feed him for a lifestyle. libs embrace the first part. give him the fish every day, sauteed in extra virgin olive oil and feed the dude until you run out of fish. conservative says no, way, get a job. buy a fishing rod and start fishing, you jerk. it sounds mean even though it's correct. so that is why you get colbert or snl mocking romney for saying you must fire incompetent people. it's right but it sounds mean. today in america mean is bad.

in a way republicans remind you of your dad and democrats remind you of mom's new boyfriend. which is why when a prominent lib says you must pay your fair share, it sounds right, feels right to the media, even if it might be harmful. the curse of being on the right when you are right, you remind everyone they're not. all right. we didn't get to my favorite part of the "a" block which we get to pick our biggest winners and losers from the debate. my biggest winner, kelly evans who looks like what reporter would look like in a movie. you know, in "all the president's men," bob woodward is not robert redford but kelly evans is kelly evans. the loser is the audience who clapped and hooted like it was a chippendale's review. you know "married with children," every person who walked in would get applause. that was that's what it was like. i was tired of it. >> andrea: i wish it was chippendale's review. >> greg: shirtless -- >> eric: how do you know what a chippendale's review is

like? >> greg: let's say i had to make my way through college. not on stage. i did the laundry. >> dana: of what? >> greg: somebody has been there. >> andrea: after you ask the questions, juan, i have to say i wasn't at chippendale's review, i was happy to be watching you. >> greg: best and worst moments? >> andrea: newt gingrich because your monologue says he's on the right. i love mean people and i thought he was mean. the loser, ron paul. i got to say, i don't think he had -- he has good debate performances. this is not one of his best. why doesn't anyone bring up the fact. i'm not an agent. i don't think it's an issue. but why do people say certain candidates is too old to run? hillary clinton is too old. mccain, too old. >> dana: bob dole. >> andrea: he would be 80 by the time he was president, ron paul? tough.

>> greg: juan, what was your best moment and don't involve yourself. >> juan: i got to involve myself because i think newt knocked one of my questions out of the park and got a standing ovation. in terms of break-out moment, getting attention, media focus. newt gingrich, winner last night. loser i would have to say i think mitt romney was in what dean smith used to call a stall. basically wanted to sit on the ball and run out the lead. it came across that way. and especially in terms of handling the bain stuff. he had been told, you have to have good answers on the boehner stuff. he was like -- >> greg: he was on a guy on the court industrying to explain the mysterious disappearance of his wife. like, of course, i don't know what happened. i was -- anyway. >> eric: obviously, newt clearly hit the ball out of the park on a bunch of topics right before the break on the economy stuff. right after the break on the foreign policy. ron paul would be my loser. but i thought very quirky when

santorum was going after romney the way he did, trying to catch him in the ah-ha moment about the felony voting. that seemed like an act of desperation. >> juan: wait a minute. it worked. >> eric: you think it worked. i don't think it worked. >> greg: it flustered romney. >> juan: in is a set-up. saying i'm waiting for eric to throw that right hand because i'm going to clobber him. he stepped into it. he has to know his own record. he has to know what he voted for massachusetts to allow them to have a record. >> eric: i was governor but 80% of the state governor were democrats. it would be difficult for me to change that. by the way, that is the one thing -- >> juan: no. he signed it. he bought into it. >> eric: very difficult for him to fight that one. >> andrea: game, set, match, santorum on that one. >> juan: i think. he set him up. >> greg: did you have best or worst or are you looking forward to something else? >> dana: i do think there was a really good moment. it made me like put down my

twitter and actually look at the debate. that was when rick santorum talked about the importance of family and need for the return of stronger, dare i say, family values. i thought it was effective. i have been reading some materials lately, book coming out soon. by charles murray, called "coming apart." coming out from crown whichvy a relationship with. i got a chance to look at the book ahead of time. it's not just black america where you have a decline in all sort of areas but also in white america. so that is why the, i think the reaction was from the crowd was we all need to be going in the same direction. santorum got to a little bit of heart of the matter there. that was good. what i am not looking forward to, well, actually i am because -- i didn't know there was another debate on thursday. i totally missed it. another debate. >> juan: don't worry, it won't match ours. >> dana: i have dinner plans and i'll keep them.

are talking. >> andrea: debbie waserman schultz came out and said that minorities are a more natural fit for democrats. we saw that when they pass legislation. democrats have done that. i don't think it works. >> eric: it looks and sounds bitter. at the south carolina democratic party chairman just shows he is -- i don't looking and begging for attention. i mean, anyone who knows how to beg for attention it's me. that would be something maybe i would say. >> andrea: we have the sound from debbie waserman schultz. >> greg: thank god. i love hearing her voice. >> andrea: i know you miss her. just for you, can we get a clip of dws? listen to her referencing what i mentioned. >> there is a reason that the democratic party is for more diverse than the republican

party. the natural response to hispanic, women, jews, asian americans, african-americans, the spectrum of diversity is comfortable in the democratic party. we have stand up for issues that matter to the communitie communities. republicans shun them. >> dana: why didn't you stop there. we stand up for them. but she had to say republicans shun them. it takes the legs from under her argument. it looks bitter. >> andrea: it's not true. >> dana: it's not. but if that's what they believe, that is how they present themselves. but she takes a cheap shot. >> greg: we know democratic party is home of shrilled wild-eyed demagogues. she is making a point. they are -- the democratic party is the home for minorities but they have to realize minorities have to realize a great big world out there. a world that doesn't speak to you as a dependent statistic

but as a real person who seeks achievement and wealth. that is coming. we have herman cain proof it's coming. >> juan: last night on the stage when i said to mitt romney why are you the guy with the hardest line in immigration. your dad is born in mexico, you have family in mexico. you don't even support the dream act? why don't latinos support republicans? but it seems like someone doesn't like me. >> andrea: that's not how i took it all. i thought romney took hard line against illegal immigration, which we should all do. people are breaking the law. you don't -- >> eric: of course. >> juan: you can take a line and say i support legal immigration. but even mitt romney says it's not rational to deport 12 million illegal immigrants in the united states but he says i really want them to go home and not be given preference for the front of the line. that doesn't make sense. all you are doing then is engaging in the harsh rhetoric against people who are living

in america. especially kids in our military and in our school. that doesn't make sense. >> andrea: i think when you see certain demographics going down approval rating in democrats is when they get wiley-eyed. more angry at single women like myself and others who vote republican and they're like why? you should vote with the democrats. we represent you. i think no, you don't. we're going see more of this? african-americans and women are -- >> juan: for republicans, for republicans, great hope has to be that they are more people like you, andrea. right now, what you are seeing is that the republican party does not get single women. does not get minorities. >> dana: increasingly so, the independent studies. >> juan: 92%. >> andrea: all right. after we saw the cruise ship disaster, you have seen the footage, some of us wonder is chivalry dead? that's what we are debating next. stay with us.

♪ ♪ >> dana: welcome back. we'll give you an update on something we talked about yesterday, the cruise ship disaster that everyone has been watching. we now know that the italian coast, italian luxury cruise liner ran aground friday night. there are 11 people dead. 25 are still missing, including two americans, gerald and barbara heihl. we are keeping them in our prayers. they are from minnesota. we're going to take a different tactic to talk about the captain is now under house arrest. rich laurie of national review wrote a great piece, question of chivalry. whether the disaster shows us that chivalry is dead. the captain left the ship, he is in trouble for that. also, greg, women and children were not given the ability to get off first. one person was quoted saying the men were worse than the women. big crew members pushing past us to get in the lifeboat. not the age of the titanic.

i get a little claustrophobic, so i just didn't want to do it. i went on a cruise as a favor to people of "weekly standard" in december. i'm on the cruise and i'm thinking to myself why am i here? and then i get on the cruise and the first thing they do is here is the life jackets. here are the lifeboats. >> dana: that is whenp you get on a plane. gawps if that horn is sounded, get on your -- >> dana: the only place you don't strap is in on the train. >> juan: i only ride the bus. my point to you was i can't understand all the chaos. what happened? >> andrea: it's the mediterranean. >> dana: it's like they had no -- it's like they have never done a drill. >> andrea: spending a lot of time there, having family in greece and being italian, they're not very organized. i have to say, safety is not like the cruise that you had where they do the presentations. it's just a little different. reckless. >> dana: can we move on to one other topic. we have less to 45 seconds.

i'm in the "e" block again. talk about tim tebow real quick, because he is the quarterback of the denver broncos. we have followed his season, a good one. we actually found out today he is going to turn down the request by cbs to be part of their broadcast this weekend. good move by him? >> eric: yeah. whatever is in tebow's heart. the guy clearly, he brought ratings. he is an absolute, outstanding guy. every kid should look up to tim tebow and strive to be more like tim tebow. >> juan: why wouldn't he do cbs? >> eric: nothing to do with cbs -- >> dana: he is probably going to take a moment to gather himself and figure it out. >> greg: let me make a point. crazy thing about tebow we invented a new verb, tebowing. in the robert bork days after the horrible process, it was referred to borking. now you have tebowing which is what happens to a moral outstanding christian person suddenly in the limelight. >> dana: or a pretzel.
