this? no, let's start with this and try to get it. brilliantly, newt gingrich knew eventually somebody would ask something like that. he was able not only to hit it on of the park but hit it into the next county. >> and the second home run came as he continued. we couldn't play it all for you here this morning. we'll probably play it later. he did go on to say that when john king tried to say it was abc, not cnn, he said no, your executives sat around and made the decision to make it the first question tonight. by the way, one of my main missions is to make sure the mainstream media which newt gingrich believes serves the elite and president obama, that they will stop attacking republicans. it was a brilliant moment and after that, i'm not so sure that there was a high point like that for the next few hours. >> he won the first two minutes. after that, professor newt took over but nonetheless, it was a good first two minutes for him. >> the only thing i would add is juan williams and chris wallace can call up john king and say i know what it's like.

newt gingrich ripped chris wallace first and juan williams' question is what newt gingrich was able to shine earlier in the debate this week and john king again. it's not as if it was scripted. he probably knew the topic was going to come up. >> absolutely. he knew the topic would come up as mitt romney undoubtedly knew the question of his income taxes was going to come up and he was ready and he responded he would go ahead and make them public as soon as he filed his income taxes in april as he has said in the past. but then john king had a gotcha question. he said did you know that your father when he was running for president said he would unveil 12 years worth of stuff? would you do that? and he had to waiver a little bit. >> he said maybe he would. he went on to talking about capitalism which i thought was a strong statement. listen to this. >> and i'm going to stand and defend capitalists across this country, throughout this campaign. i know we're going to hit it hard for president obama but we're going to sufficient it down his throat and point out it's capitalism and freedom that makes america strong.

>> i'm not going to apologize for being successful. >> and that was made very well -- >> i think mitt romney obviously talked to some advisors after the last debate performance and he seemed to me to be much more forceful and aggressive in a good way. >> solid. >> solid in a way that he was answering the questions. but this morning, i'd love to know what the viewers think. did you care about the ex-wife interview? did you care about that? would that change your mind if you live -- or even if you do live in south carolina. does that change your mind and this whole issue about mitt romney's tax situation and when he worked at bain, does that factor into your mind as you go to the polls, pretend like you would. >> i will say this, i'm astounded when a team like the romney team that's been assembled and so well organized and the candidate through his own fault or team's fault has no good answer or an answer that would resonate successfully on are you going to release your taxes? i was astounded to say i don't know, maybe was his response. the crowd boos. this is three days after he blew

get hundreds of e-mails a day and i've got six different e-mail addresses. i have not received a single e-mail on either of these stories and i just don't think people are that worried or concerned about these issues but the media is fixated on it. we had a two-hour debate last night and i would say almost all of it was focused in on policy and barack obama and the direction that these candidates want to take america and you had a couple of minutes of jabs here and there. but that's expected. i mean, this isn't patty cake. this is for the presidency of the united states. >> we've heard so many times this isn't bean bag. now it's good to hear it's not patty cake. we've moved on. ok. >> that's right. >> how about, mr. chairman, this report that apparently democrats have received more money from bain capital, mr. romney's organization, former organization than from republicans. as you look over the last number of years, the democrats have contributed at bain $1.2 million to the democrats whereas bain

executives and what not have credibili contributed less than half to republicans. what does that say to you? >> i don't care where bain's money is going or where wall street's money is going. what i do care about the fact that this president is an absolute hypocrite when it comes to the things that come out of his mouth and the reality, also as a president that rails on wall street all the time but he's taken more money from wall street than all the candidates combined, even the four that have dropped out, if you add them into the mix. this president has a record of constantly saying one thing and doing another and, you know, he's the speech of fire in chief. i think people are sick and tired of the pageantry and the words and all the garbage that he spews and that's why we need to make sure we make him a one term president and save this kunlt. >> he had three fundraisers in new york city and really loused up the traffic for hours. >> and at disney, too. >> that's right. thank you very much for starting your day really early after the

shortfall. >> are they ironing -- >> i don't know, were those pictures of actual teachers? meanwhile, just a month after we showed you this video of a fed ex delivery guy chucking a computer monitor over a customer's fence, the same thing has happened again but this time it's a u.s. postal service mailman caught on camera. he can't operate the gate -- look at that. so he throws the package over the fence. inside the box an antique 1938 cuckoo clock from germany. look at that. the guy who ordered it was home when the mailman tossed it over the fence. the postal service says hey, look, we're sorry. and is paying to fix the busted clock. >> of course. >> talk about cuckoo. >> when something like that breaks, you lose the value of it, right? if it's an antique and it has to be fixed with super glue -- >> there's nothing wrong with fixing a cuckoo clock, it drives you nuts in the big picture.

if you keep on believing, we'll finish what we started in 2008. change will come. if you fight with me and press on with me, i promise you, change will come! >> wow, and there was nothing really new about what happened yesterday. sandra smith is here from the fox business network. nothing new, sandra, because the president came back to new york for three huge fundraisers. >> unfortunately, it sounds like a lot more of the same despite his talk about change. we're talking about two events at very fancy upper east side daniel restaurant, 160 attendees paying between $5,000 and $15,000 for a ticket there. the apollo theater filled up, 1400 people there, average ticket price about 100 people. that's where he ended the night but the big fancy event of the evening, the pricey ticket was actually at the private home on the upper east side of hollywood movie director spike lee. he had in attendance about 45 people.

35,800 dollars a ticket each. ok? mariah carrey and her husband were in attendance. the fear that this is more of the same. despite the talk about change, we're talking about more bundlers stepping forward and actually the numbers show in large part, he's still paying -- he's getting the big bucks and these guys are paying to get some sort of role in the white house. >> if you pay $35,000, is it an open bar? >> i heard it was top shelf liquor. let's leave it at that. >> let's talk a little bit more about these bundlers because i mean, i think some people -- most people know that if you do raise money for the president, you might get a payback. how has that worked out? >> we're actually seeing some of the numbers coming out for the center of public integrity. we're talking 68 of the 350 bundlers for the 2012 election, 68 of the 350 of those bundlers has -- those bundlers have served in some form in the white house. they or their spouses. ok? that's a very large percentage.

republicans can undo the president's decision? let's talk to this guy right here, fox news senior judicial analyst, judge andrew napolitano, host of "freedom watch" joins us live this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so the state department, you know, we were waiting for approval. >> once the state department gave approval to the project, look at the pipeline, the blue is the proposed pipeline. from the top to the bottom are 56 different lawsuits intended to condemn property so that the pipeline can be built. those lawsuits cost millions of dollars in the people suing, the canadian utility and the people whose property they're trying to take. all that comes to a halt. one the state department approved this, thousands of pieces of pipe and equipment were ordered. >> 200 miles of pipe. >> correct. sitting in a warehouse. who is going to pay for that? not the federal government because when the federal government makes a mistake, when it changes its mind. when people rely on its decisions and then they lose money because of that reliance,

the government has insulated itself from lawsuits so the only consequence to the president here will be a political consequence. does the american public really want this kind of on again, off again type of decision making. >> what can the republicans do to see that this thing eventually is built? >> vote him out of office because the statute gives the president absolute discretion to say yes or no. first he said yes and then he said no. >> they said yes before they said no. >> right. so the answer is political. could they change the statute? yes, but it would take 2/3 of each house of congress and they don't have that much support. interestingly, there are some democrats that have criticized the president. democrats running for re-election in states with high unemployment where the pipeline would bring work and fuel are as critical of the president as the republicans have been. >> i didn't realize how much exposure that utility had and the pipe maker. i never thought about that. >> $5 billion probably lost by that utility.

hero. she did work for the cruise line at one point but she was not working on this trip nor was she listed as a paying guest. a federal official plans to plead the fifth today regarding a gunrunning scandal known as operation fast & furious. chief of the criminal division of the u.s. attorney's office in arizona patrick cunningham was ordered to appear before the house oversight committee earlier this week. he was supposed to discuss his role in the operation that put more than 2,000 u.s. guns in drug dealers' hands in mexico. guns from that failed operation were found at the murder scene of a u.s. border patrol agent. are ads for the new tom hanks movie incredibly insensitive? more and more september 11th families say absolutely, yes. subway ads for "extremely loud and incredibly close" are playing near yards from where the twin towers fell. the ads show the towers on fire and now relatives of victims who died in the attacks are infuriated. they're already upset the movie gives no warning of the graphic images and now they want the ads

pulled. a warner brothers spokesperson says the movie company will do just that. wow. those are your headlines. i read in an editorial yesterday that said nowhere in the entire movie do they talk about terrorism or terrorists. they called it something else as we've seen the p.c. society at work maybe again. >> when you call the fort hood shooter an example of workplace violence, don't expect that to turn up from a hollywood movie. >> it sets the tone. ladies and gentlemen, i don't know if you watched the debate last my. if you didn't, let's start with this. this debate could have started with one of the most egregious examples of media bias ever. if you think cnn would ever start with a personal question of a democrat in a presidential campaign, i think you're crazy and i'd like to talk to you about buying some pipe land up in canada. the way john king started the debate was to ask that guy right there, the former speaker of the house newt gingrich about

allegations from his ex-wife mary anne that he asked her for an open marriage. and it went uphill and then downhill from there. >> she says you asked her, sir, to enter into an open marriage. would you like to take some time to respond to that? no but i will. i think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for office and i am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that. every person in here knows personal pain. every person in here has had someone close to them go through

painful things. to take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything i can imagine. >> well, if you were looking for some fireworks, you got it when you tuned in immediately to the debate. all i can say is wow. he really handled that question quite brilliantly. >> you talked to herman cain, you two guys did, about this experience and his take on the debate and that question. as you might recall, herman cain had a myriad of these events and accusations before he left the race. listen to his reaction. >> i loved newt gingrich's response because that's the same crap that they pulled on me and that's what's wrong with politics. this is what's turning the american people off. what does something that happened 20 years ago relative to an ex-wife have to do with

fixing america's problems today? nothing. >> and it's abc who did the huge story and they made it a big story about mitt romney's off-shore investments in the cayman islands and the next day on "nightline" aired last night at 11:30 eastern time, they have this one-on-one interview, this exclusive with his ex-wife. >> i thought it was interesting, the reporter on that brian ross who does some very credible reporting, he said that his intention was not to interview the ex-wife to get her to say what she said allegedly about an open marriage, it was to talk about the ethics violations that newt gingrich had when he was speaker of the house. yeah, right. >> they were going to talk -- >> yeah, right. >> one other thing, right after john king asked newt gingrich about that, he turned to mitt romney and said how about you mr. romney, would you like to weigh in on this? keep in mind, it was just a week ago where newt gingrich was calling into question mitt romney's integrity about how he made all that money with bain capital. when given the chance, mr. romney simply said and this was

a great line of the night. "john, let's get on to the real issues." >> he took the high road on that one. ok, there were other times when, of course, he was asked other questions and in this particular part of the debate, mitt romney went after newt gingrich about his ties to the reagan era and to the president himself. >> you asked me an entirely different question. but -- >> beats me. i don't know. where are we at, john? >> let me tell you, one of the things i find amusing is listening to how much credit is taken in washington for what goes on on main street. i mean, mr. speaker, it was -- you talk about all the things you did with ronald reagan and that reagan revolution and the jobs created during the reagan years and so forth. i mean, i looked at the reagan diary. you're mentioned once in ronald reagan's diary and in the diary, he says you had an idea in a

meeting of young congressmen and it wasn't a very good idea and he dismissed it. that's the entire mention. >> i think mitt romney also said his own father was actually mentioned in the ronald reagan diaries at least once. "the washington post" this morning did a fact check on what mr. romney just said and said it's absolutely true. apparently, this happened -- this meeting with reagan and the young republicans 1983 where newt gingrich suggested freezing the federal budget at that point but ronald reagan at that point felt it would decimate the pentagon so he didn't take mr. gingrich up on the idea. >> let's talk about rick santorum because he had a great -- he had a great moment last night, i thought one of his strongest moments was when he was asked what would you do differently about your campaign if you could do it again? he said absolutely nothing. he said i can't believe i'm here in the final four and especially considering where i started, where i had town halls and no one was coming and i'm still standing. he went after newt gingrich who really started it, you might say that mitt romney started with newt. well, it was newt that started with santorum when he said basically drop out of the race.

you're a junior senator from pennsylvania who got blown out in the last election. he went back at newt and his style of legislating. >> grand onesity has never been a problem with newt gingrich. he handles it very, very well and that's really one of the issues here, folks. a month ago, he was saying it's inevitable i'm going to win the election and i'm destined to do it. i don't want a nominee that i have to worry about going out and looking at the paper the incomes day and figuring out -- worrying about what he is going to say next. >> you're right, i think grandiose thoughts. this is a grandiose country of big people doing big things and we need leadership prepared to take on big projects. i will give newt gingrich his due on grandiose ideas and grandiose projects. i will not give him his due on executing those projects which is exactly what the president of the united states is supposed to do. >> there's an ad with a republican who talks, ripping

his fellow republican colleague and that's newt gingrich just about the same thing that rick santorum brought up. >> come up on our -- >> i was going to say at one point, rick santorum came really close to essentially calling newt gingrich crazy. >> he did. >> came really close. >> another candidate has done that and i believe that candidate was mitt romney and he's going to be coming up at 7:50 a.m. eastern time on our show. lots of questions for him post debate. 1/3 approximate of -- of all voters in south carolina still undecided. that's why these debates are so important and it's totally an open field. i don't think anyone can say who is going to win. >> the word is zany. he called him zany. >> thank you. >> number two is we don't have any poll results that show if that interview with the ex-wife meant anything to the people of south carolina and we don't know if this obviously no poll on what just happened at the debate. >> exactly. who do you think won last night? send us an e-mail friends at foxnews.com. if you're in south carolina and

>> we've also restored a sense of honesty and transparency to our budget and it calls for a new level of transparency. >> we've put in place higher standards of transparency. >> well, after closed door meeting, after closed door meetings between members of his administration and things like green energy companies like solyndra, among others, some are wondering where is that transparency that the president promiseed and why isn't the media picking up on it especially being fair to the previous administration. joining us right now, former state department official, fox news contributor and daughter of the former vice president of the united states, dick cheney, liz cheney. welcome back. >> thank you, brian. good to be with you. >> you find it somewhat -- you see a double standard between the way your dad was treated and the bush administration treated and this one. why? >> yeah, i think there's a level of hypocrisy that is pretty standard operating procedure at this point for the obama administration. things that they criticized the bush administration for, you know, but yet, they're given a pass. at the same time, though, it seems to me at the end of the day what really worries me is the policies that we're seeing

come out of, you know, what turn out not to be such transparent processes. the most recent example would be in my view the defense cuts that were announced last week. where you've got a major shifted in policy. massive reductions in the size of our army and marine corps. very significant and damaging cuts in terms of new weapons systems which seem to have been done without any review whatsoever. no formal review, really just a speech. so you end up with very bad policy coming out of a pretty opaque process. >> i watched the whole thing even when the defense secretary panetta followed the president of the united states at the pentagon to announce these cuts. he basically said we haven't decided what we're cutting yet. we'll announce big cuts coming up. good jobs on the wars. you're saying that's not the way it's done. >> no, i mean, what they ought to be doing is saying what threats does the united states face and what do we need to be able to defend against those threats? instead what they're doing is refusing to deal with the real problem which is entitlements

and cutting defense. it's totally driven by, you know, their refusal to cut in other areas. their sense that the defense budget is fair game and frankly, it makes us all less safe. it's a sense it's based on this rhetoric that the war is over and we're at peace and simply because president obama says that, you know, he seems to think it's true so we're launching into massive cuts here without real serious review at a time when the war goes on. >> and does it worry you at all that we're done with the war in iraq look i promised seems to be more important than to say in some speech than actually being successful in iraq and leaving the right way. >> absolutely, brian. i think if you look at what's going on in iraq in terms of the complete withdrawal of all american forces and the disintegration you've seen and the conditions on the ground since, if you look at what's going on in afghanistan with this announcement that we're going to bring the surge troops home by september, when the commanders on the ground wanted

last time the people of south carolina stood, i think, was the war of northern aggression. the first one. and you're going to see -- >> two standing ovations. >> yes. and that doesn't happen. we had the first standing ovation since 1980 in the south carolina debate that fox news hosted. but this one last night, it was one of the toughest questions a candidate ever has to face, an attack from an ex-wife and newt gingrich handled it so well that the audience, it was just -- they erupted in applause including people who didn't support him. let's take a look. >> let me be quite clear. the story is false. every personal friend i have that knew us in that period says the story was false. we offered several of them to abc to prove it was false. they weren't interested because they would like to attack any republican. they're attacking the governor. they're attacking me. i'm sure they'll get around to senator santorum and congressman paul. i am tired of the elite media protecting barack obama by attacking the republicans.

exactly right, we are of a generation that extolled the virtue of sex and openness and infidelity was almost an afterthought in the generation of the '60s that we represent. so i definitely get that. but when you're running for president, you have to defend your character -- this is the difference, gretchen. i wrote a memoir about what i did and i o got a lot of heat for it. i never preached morality. newt gingrich, shortly after announcing this arrangement where he would have a mistress and a wife, then did a speech on the defense of american marriage. >> steve: the question was not about the double standard with morality. it was like, your ex-wife says this, what do you want to say about it? that was the first question. >> i refuse to make john king the issue. the issue is hypocrisy. the issue is if you are something, then you represent yourself to be that person. not to be a moral, upstanding

where he has surged to the lead and where the whole field is now unsettled by santorum's surprise victory in iowa, where gingrich now has the money with his own super pac to fight back against romney. there is no doubt they slammed him strategically where it would get the highest ratings. i cop to that absolutely. but then that's what news people do. it's not just the elite media. they time stories for maximum impact. >> gretchen: on both sides? >> on both sides. >> brian: the other thing the network is factoring in, he already said he made snakes and he apologized. but he thought he could turn the page on that. i want to you hear rick santorum get more specific about the issues. this is his problem with the way newt leads. >> four years into a speakership, he was thrown out by the conservatives. it was a coup against him in 03. i served with him. i was there. i knew what the problems were going on in the house of representatives and newt gingrich was leading there.

it was an idea a minute. no discipline. no ability to be able to pull things together. >> i think, first of all, we should have a split shot of rick santorum and brian kilmeade because i think they're brothers. don't you see the resemblance? and couldn't brian actually fill in for rick santorum in ma debate? i think he could. >> brian: i couldn't do as good a job. >> the fact is, here is rick santorum, like mitt romney, one wife, well raised children, like barak obama. a family man to the core. if family values and social conservativism is for a candidate, rick santorum is the poster boy for good character. >> gretchen: he was talk being his ability to lead. >> because newt gingrich has been -- i agree, again, but newt gingrich has been a volatile person. let's face it. when he shut down the government, most historians regard that as someone who did a

public policy acting out for private peek. getting put to the back of air force one. as volatility and president, they don't go together. >> gretchen: why do people like him now? >> because he is absolutely charismatic, he is intelligent, he is glib. i would love to have him on the couch and have a joust with him. i think that he would measure up very well against barak obama in a be date. he's not a teleprompter kind of guy. he spikes the needle when people are watching. he zings the zingers. i think perhaps there is a place for newt gingrich in government. i'm not sure what it is, but i'm not sure that i want someone who spikes the needle in control of the big red button. >> brian: i know one thing, if we want to find out what happened with the cruise ship, you're the man. you're doing a special on this, on what happened. >> you know, couple of things we have discovered. one headline that i don't think most people have heard is that this was not the first time that

vying for votes in south carolina last night. just ahead of the state's primary tomorrow. since 1980, the candidate who has won in south carolina has gone on to win the republican nomination. >> brian: so who has the upper hand right now, especially after last night's debate? joining us from charleston, south carolina, congressman tim scott. i saw you there last night and i'm just wondering since you're on the ground and that is your state, are the polls right? is newt gingrich indeed on a roll with a slight lead from which you can ascertain? >> it certainly looks that way, without any question, last night's debate reinforced the fact that newt finds himself in a very positive position and i think the first question of the debate last night actually said the theory of the audience against the media and also strengthened newt's position in south carolina. >> steve: i know you are -- you're looking at candidates, figuring out who to endorse, you want somebody who can take on the current sitting president of the united states. here is a montage of some of the things the candidate high school

>> what was he saying to you? >> he was asking to have an open marriage and i refused. >> gretchen: i'm joined by peter johnson, jr. >> good morning, gretchen. >> gretchen: what do you make of the premise that was -- the two questions about is there any sort of bias here? >> the first issue is that moral authority, sanctity of marriage, family value, those are issues that newt gingrich has spoken about in the past. it's also known that he has been divorced in the past and that he had a relationship with his current wife apparently while he was married. that's all known. he's asked for forgiveness in the past. he's spoken about his redemption. he's spoken about his renewed faith. it's also known there is an unholy alliance between abc and cnn and msnbc and certain factions in the government. and so when this question was asked at the beginning of this

debate, putting private conduct that was already well-known as front and center in an important debate, the people in that audience and i think the people across the country stood up literally and said, wait a second! what's this about? who were you trying to destroy? yes, competence, character and conscious are issues and those are personal issues for voters. but is it up to an anchor on cnn to engage in a moral debate with a candidate, to put a candidate front and center at the top of this debate? so i think a lot of americans say yes, character, conscience, competence are issues, but we are outraged that you would try and somehow out this man when you're not outing him. these are issues that are well-known to the american public. >> gretchen: he got a standing ovation. so we know the sentiment of how the people felt in that auditorium. but let me ask you this, would it have been okay in your mind for that question to come up any

time during the debate? >> i think this is a way of asking it, especially if it's raised by the others. the others -- rick santorum is talking about in south carolina how he walks the walk, how he talks the talk of being a social values conservative. now, obviously that's a reference to this issue that arose yesterday during mitt romney's introduction, he talked about all his children, all his grandchildren, how long he had been married. ron paul talked about how long he had been married, more than 50 years. so obviously this is going to be an issue in the back of people's minds. but what it focused yesterday and last night was this overwhelming bias that is seen in the main stream media and a belief by a lot of americans that the main stream media first tried to destroy mitt romney and probably continues to try to do that as the white house continues to do that, but also said oh, oh, gingrich is now

capitol to reveal his taxes, chris wallace. good morning to you, sir. >> that's one of many reasons, steve, that i am not running for president this year. >> gretchen: the debate is down to four people and it started off with a lot of fireworks when newt gingrich was asked this question and he came out firing. listen to this, chris. >> the story is false. every personal friend i have who knew us and i pray says the story was false, we offered several of them to abc to prove it was false. they weren't interested because they would like to attack any republican. they're attacking the governor, they're attacking me. i'm sure they'll get around to senator santorum and ron paul. i'm tired of the elite media attacking republicans. >> gretchen: does he have a point? do you agree with him? >> no. i don't agree with him at all. i got to sakes i was thinking to myself last night, that's how sad my life is. i sit there even in debates i'm

not part of it and think, what would i do? i would have asked that as the first question. it's unpleasant. it's the news. it's the big development that's out there and look, we're judging a president. and how he answers and look, it got a terrific answer from him. our job isn't to be popular. our job is to ask what's on people's minds. we've asked about the economy and we've asked about foreign policy a million times. we're going to get to it in the course of a two-hour debate. i thought it was a legitimate first question to ask. as somebody once said, there is no such thing as an indiscreet question. there are only indiscreet answers. you give the question, he gives an answer. >> steve: clearly newt gingrich was prepared for that. if he wins tomorrow, people will be going, you know what? it was that first dumb question that john king asked him that he hit it out of the county on. >> well, you know. and that's part of it, too. i don't think that king was trying to help his campaign or hurt his campaign.

he thought it was the big development since the last debate. so you ask it. it's up to the candidate to how he handles it. >> gretchen: there was a big development that rick perry dropped out of the race and endorsed newt gingrich. he could have started with that. >> oh, i think that's kind of inside baseball. really? what does it mean to you that rick perry dropped out of the race? i don't know. let me ask you, do you think this was more interesting debate than the perry question as a first question? >> brian: yeah. i just think -- i understand where he's coming from with newt gingrich being outraged. but they also know underlying this entire dialogue is the family values. south carolina is known for and rick santorum perhaps represents better and mitt romney and ron paul perhaps represent better. so the finesse portion of the follow-up to that question which i found interesting, here is rick santorum on the offensive taking on newt gingrich because he told him to get out of the race. >> grandiosity has never been a problem with newt gingrich.

he handles it very, very well. that's really one of the issues here, folks. a month ago he was saying, oh, it's inevitable that i'm going to win the election and i'm destine to do do it. i don't want a nominee that i have to worry about look at the paper and figure out -- worry being what he's going to say next. >> you're right. i think grandiose thoughts. this is a grandiose country of big people doing big things and we need leadership to take on big projects. >> i will give newt gingrich his due on grandiose projects. i will not give him his due on executing those projects which is exactly what the president of the united states is supposed to do. >> steve: at one point, chris, last night, rick santorum came close to calling newt gingrich crazy. >> i actually thought that for all the talk -- and i know most of the focus has been on newt's reaction to the ex-wife's comments, i thought that was the key moment of the debate. i thought santorum had a great

debate. i thought to the degree -- look, it's not a question who wins the debate. it's who helped themselves the most in the debate in terms of what's going to happen tomorrow. >> steve: and? >> i thought santorum helped himself the most and i thought that was a bad moment for gingrich 'cause, first of all, saying i think grandiose thoughts. i went back to my dictionary to make sure, 'cause i know newt is smarter than i was. it's not a good thing to say. i think grandiose thoughts. it means excessively grand and ambitious. it's not a compliment. and santorum makes a good point, which is what republicans want most of all is to beat obama and, you know, this gets back to that first question about the ex-wife. do you want a candidate -- this is the question santorum was raising -- who you'll have to worry about between now and november, is he going to blow up or is he going to say something that's going to get you in trouble and that was santorum's point. i will make obama the issue. i thought santorum had a very good night. >> gretchen: hopefully when you ask your questions of speaker

john boehner who will be on your show, they won't be too inside baseball like you accused me of having. it's a good thing i actually understand baseball, though. >> yeah, you do. i know you do. but having said that, it's not inside baseball. we're running the country. and the fact is that there is a country to run over the next 11 months. the president is delivering a state of the union on tuesday. we'll be asking speaker boehner about the obama agenda and also about the republican agenda and i think we'll get into the keystone pipeline, which the president disapproved again, and boehner says that's just crazy. so that should be -- and also because we don't know what the results are going to be. we'll have the chief strategist for the romney campaign to react. is romney going to be able to close the deal in south carolina or is he going to be in a one on one race against either gingrich or santorum. >> brian: it will be great, chris. thank you for joining us. >> hey, and brian, you know the money, the $10 you owe me from last december? >> brian: i have to get it to you by thursday.

who is probably watching right now and i said, look, here is the question, you give me an answer and i'm going to give you four days to give me a better answer, my four-year-old could be better prepared to deal with that same question four days later. i thought really, political malpractice that he was not better prepared on this tax return question. he has got to figure this out. >> steve: you have a four-year-old named bugsy? >> i do. >> steve: what goes on at your house? >> it's a dark time in my life four years ago, steve. >> steve: all right, fine. let's take a look at the next two. we have a second tier and first time we've had two in the second tier. oh, my goodness. bad news for rick santorum, yet he trails ron paul. >> yeah. i still think he's fading. he doesn't seem to be catching any momentum in south carolina. i know that he feels like this iowa win or tie or whatever we're calling it now, iowa is not actually certifying him a winner, although he did come out as we know with a few more

votes. i think he feels like that's going to give him a little boost in south carolina. our composite doesn't see it. we see ron paul is probably going to finish third here. i just think that rick with the sweater vest and the sort of i'm the serious adult here, it doesn't seem to be playing well. i really think that people are gravitating in south carolina to newt. these republicans, because they just feel like there is something very ponzi from happy days. or dylan from beverly hills 90210. there is something leather jacket and unpredictable and kind of sexy about newt gingrich. you don't know what he's going to say. rick santorum talked about that last night. that we don't -- republicans don't want a nominee -- >> steve: he wasn't saying it was necessarily good thing. >> exactly. but i think republicans are being drawn to that kind of unpredictability with him. >> steve: we'll find out. it's all going to be over by tomorrow night at midnight. jason wright, political derby, thank you very much for joining us today. >> thank you, sir. >> steve: you bet.

fox news alert for you right now. this morning, former massachusetts governor mitt romney picking up another key endorsement from the chair of the republican governor's association, virginia governor bob mcdonald. >> brian: i would love to talk to him. >> gretchen: here he is. >> brian: incredible. governor, 4:00 o'clock today you're going to appear with the former governor of massachusetts to say what? >> to say that this is clearly the best choice for the republican party to beat president obama. this is a results oriented conservative, the guy that has a proven record in the public and private sector of getting things done. it's only a couple of issues that matter next year. one is job creation, secondly is getting this crushing national debt under control. and three is leadership. this is clearly the best candidate for the cause. i'm delighted to endorse him. >> gretchen: last night during the debate, he defended something called capitalism. listen to this.

>> and i'm going to stand and defend capitalists across this country, throughout this campaign. i know we're going to hit it hard for president obama, but we're going to stuff it down his throat examine point out it is capitalism and freedom that makes america strong. i'm not going to apologize for being successful. [ applause ] >> gretchen: this is a different mitt romney from the monday night debate. he seemed to be a little bit more aggressive. i don't know if that's exactly the right word. but a little bit more solid maybe. >> i was in a car and a plane for most of it. i did see the clip. but he's absolutely right. this is a country where the american dream is still alive where we should celebrate success. president obama is blaming wall street and blaming people that are successful for what's wrong with the country and wants to tax them more and have punitive policies toward them. that's exactly the wrong point. we should be celebrating people like steve jobs and bill gates and mitt romney, people that have taken risk, created jobs and helped other people achieve the american dream. i thought his defense was terrific. >> brian: i got to bring to you what's happening in the virginia

ballot. a lot of controversy. if nut nut wins south carolina, you could argue he's the front runner. but when it comes to virginia, he's not going to be on the ballot. >> that case is pretty well decided. only two candidates, mitt romney and ron paul. unfortunately they were really clearly stated requirements on how to get on the ballot. i've made it twice. everybody else who has competed in statewide elections has and unfortunately, complaining after the fact that you don't like the requirements is not the way to go. that's what the judge said. we have two candidates. >> gretchen: all right. let's talk about the keystone pipeline. this has been a controversial issue leading up to this week before, but the president officially saying he's not going to go with it right now. >> that's just another terrible decision, gretchen. this is a president who talks about job, but his view of creating jobs is more stimulus, more money, more spending and more taxes. that's not the solution. mitt romney gets that. i think this pipeline decision is another attack on the energy industry. we talked about energy independence, but he's been hostile to coal, natural gas. no moving forward on yukk

mountain to promote energy. he's torched us in virginia, president obama, by not allowing offshore drilling for oil and natural gas. now to say that we don't want tens of thousands of new jobs in a 1700-mile pipeline to achieve more american energy independence, exactly the wrong way to go. it's bad decision. >> brian: you're not the only one who thinks that. harry reid is upset about it and even the democratic former governor now turned senator says this: as our country has continued to need for oil, it only makes sense that we would buy from our friends in canada rather than continuing to buy it from countries around the world that seek to do us harm. i truly believe any issue surrounding the pipeline could have been resolved if we had chosen to work together. but instead, the administration has chosen a different path. >> that was joe manchin. he was used to president obama attacking his state. this is another capitulation to his left wing base, president obama's left wing base in putting that over the importance of american jobs.
