40% to 28%, and nationally, romney does well against the president with women and-- >> that's the higher that be the margin he won south carolina, 40% in south carolina and 41% among women here. >> alisyn: in the last tenet of conventional wisdom was electability. people said, well, yes, you may feel strongly about newt gingrich, but he can't really be elected for whatever reason, that was wrong yesterday and that's not how south carolina felt. they believed that gingrich was the best person to pete president obama by 51% there. according to the exit polls, romney won against every major demographic, and this is where he'll be able to break down the category like that. if he doesn't change something, that's what pundits are saying, if he doesn't change the tax or something else, he can continue this down the line and lost $200,000 or more, and

really well at destroying each other and then making the arguments about the other, the other candidate rather than about obama, but clayton to your point. they all went after obama last night in their speeches. yeah, a little dig here or there at one another. santorum's speech classy and focusing on obama and the the others i thought did that, too. >> alisyn: let's talk about florida. this is a different equation, different issues in florida than elsewhere, namely social security, medicare, immigration and some say newt gingrich, would allow them to establish and stay here might play better than mitt romney. >> and the other piece in florida is the military piece. played it role in south carolina as well and now you go to florida where, when we get to the general election, you will see that the democrats will go after republicans for wanting to eviscerate social security.

in the next week, you see the two romney and gingrich in particular, and possibly san form going after one another about private accounts when it comes to social security. there's a lot of people that think that maybe that would be a good thing to do for younger people to have the option, to have some of their money to put it into an account which doesn't seem ought ray gus to younger people that have a 401(k). if you're a senior in florida and you're worried that your security system is about to be taken away you might hold back. >> clayton: conventional wisdom, we've been talking about that all morning long, said in myrtle beach, mitt romney will cleanup in the areas with transplant from the northeast and 15 points in that. and you look at florida, the beach homes, throw conventional outlook and does newt gingrich pick up steam now? >> he could and part of that is electability question, who is the strongest conservative who can beat obama.

now, a lot of people are looking at debate performance and there's no doubt that newt gingrich is the best debaters that the republicans have that is out there speaking right now. >> sure. >> delivers a line beautifully and cuts to the chase and can boil a complex issue in one sentence and everyone goes i totally agree with that. >> right. >> the question, i think, for some people in florida who have been watching this and waiting for their turn, but is being a good debater and maybe schooling obama in a debate going to translate into a good lead her for the country and that's where gingrich is going to have to start making convincing arguments in the last ten days, nine days before the florida vote. >> we're only going to have, in all likelihood, three debates in the general and some think two. it won't come to debates. no way that president obama will agree to six debates with newt gingrich. >> he won't agree to three. so, is there any endorsement still left that makes a difference in florida? jeb bush now has sold some

sense putting them down, particularly on issues like religion and social values. i think it worked a little less well if he does become the nominee with independents and swing voters who may not feel the same way. >> yeah, the independent vote still murky, who benefitted from the exit polls, a little closer than any of the other exit polls, but it was this, chris, a validation, continuing on the attack of bayne capital and that line against mitt romney, the idea that he's an elite guy running this very much capital company? >> i'm he not so sure about that and i think that's a risk for him. and clearly, often you can tell by how candidates respond, what their polling is show, romney went right at them on that in his speech and said, you know, people who use the weapons of the left and i think by that he meant attacks on capitalism and free enterprise, against their own

party are going to see them turn by the suspects against the republicans. so, i don't think that romney feels that that is a strong point for gingrich and a weak point for him. i think that romney had plenty of weak points and an exclusive interview at the top of the hour and talk to him about it and i think his fumbling in taxes and that he had something to hide is a big problem for romney. >> dave: do you think more on substance and style? do you think it's more important that romney releases the tax returns or learns how to spin it? >> i think probably both. i mean, i think there are two points, it's a good question, dave. i think on the one hand, the idea that he wasn't releasing the tax returns only added to the sense that maybe he had something to hide and maybe, you know, because he is rich and turns out that he pays at 15% marginal tax rate, which is a lot less than a lot of americans and certainly a lot

less than americans who make as much money as he does, but in addition, you know, you just have to on style, look at the debate and there's no kwn on a viceral, emotional level. newt gingrich connected with south carolina voters and with the attack on the media and elites, connected with the anger that a lot of republican voters feel about the country in a way that mitt romney did not. so there's some substantial involved and also some style. >> a question on the debate issue, romney has to stop debating them. the florida one, but after that, no more debates headed into super tuesday, every time it's oxygen for newt gingrich. >> it's a very good question and here is the interesting thing about it, romney is the only one, well, i guess it's not rn paul, too, but romney of the other three is the one with a really campaign, the by that got millions in his war chest, has a huge national organization, is on the ballot

the mistakes that gingrich would make to say my attacks worked and continue them. the mistakes romney will make, my money and organization will carry me. florida is a totally different state from carolina. the panhandle in florida is a lot like carolina. and the west coast is like ohio and michigan and east coast boston and new jersey. and the point is, the republican party is a thre three-way coalition, and economic conservatives 40 eevangelicals 40. in south carolina the economic conservatives are smaller, evangelicals in the military larger. in florida the opposite is the case. romney can make it with economic conservatives. gingrich can't make it without them. he won south carolina with evangelicals and national security types and his attacks on romney will back fire with the economic conservatives.

dr. richard lam was on and asked about evangelicals felt about newt gingrich, ambivalent, it's not sure they'll go for him and it changed it. 44% went with him. >> clayton: and he said he thought newt gingrich would win and rick santorum, 22% after the meeting with the evangelical leaders in texas last week. here's, though, the statistic i was talking about off the top of the show. keep the 40% in your mind and look at this. because, 40% is what newt gingrich won last night's primary with and among married women, we know the story this week, with the baggage associated with the abc interview, did it affect the married women vote? 41%, no. higher than the percentage with which he won south carolina. >> dave: that is a shocking reversal as well, a couple of weeks ago, mitt romney had an enormous lead when it came to women, came to married women in south carolina, and, nationally but really what made the race, earlier on you saw it was about who was most likely to beat

curiouser. unpredictable and, as you threw out the book of conventional wisdom, earlier -- you threw it towards camera 2, actually, and if you are tuning in, newt gingrich won south carolina, with a resounding victory last night. >> clayton: we know who the voters voted for, and the voters picked. but, why did they do it? john roberts, live in charleston, south carolina, he has been down there, in the trenches. a look at these exit polls from yesterday's primary, john, fascinating information in these things, huh? >> reporter: absolutely. good morning, clayton and, good morning, it was not a newt gingrich victory, it was a blowout, '08, john mccain and mike huckabee split up the state of south carolina and the math today, almost all in newt gingrich's color, he won all but three counties and late deciding voters broke overwhelmingly for newt gingrich, here's how it turn out. first, let's look at conservative voters, they make up 69% of the electorate here, 2008, they went overwhelmingly

for mike huckabee and look, newt gingrich got 44% of them, mitt romney coming second with 24 and santorum with 20 and newt gingrich won among independents and moderates and came close among moderates, rather, and that is important an evangelical voters next, newt gingrich 44% of them. weren't they supposed to go to rick santorum? he got 22%, look at this figure, this is really interesting. married women, 41% going for newt gingrich, that would be an indication that the scandal of the last couple of days prior to the primary, really didn't resonate with them and top quality. can beat president obama, newt gingrich overwhelmingly, with 51%, romney came in second, with 37%. now, when you take that in total, that is not just a profile of a candidate who can win the south carolina primary. that is the profile of a candidate who can become the nominee, guys. >> alisyn: and, john, what about the debates? you alluded to the scandal that broke the week before in south carolina.

obviously some people give the debates a lot of weight and they think that tipped the scales for newt gingrich? >> reporter: they sure do, in fact 2/3 of voters in south carolina said the debates were very important to them, i talked to so many undecided voters to say, we didn't know that much about newt gingrich and when we saw the debate performance, wow, did we like him and loved the fire and the passion and loved the way he stuck it to the media on thursday night. and, last night in the victory speech, he alluded to all of that. >> and the reaction, people completely misunderstand what is going on, it is not that i am a good debater. it is that i articulate the deepest felt values of the american people. >> reporter: and, you know, if there was one thing i heard from south carolina voters again and again and again after last night's victory, they thought juan williams and john king helped hand the south carolina prime minist primary to newt gingrich. >> alisyn: i heard that, well and he owes them a dinner. thanks for bringing that down

gingrich, without naming him, he said, those who have joined the president in the assault on free enterprise is attacking you, talking to the voters and says the republican party does not demonize prosperity. has he finally found a voice, defending bain capital and capitalism? >> yes. he's beginning to find a voice and will have to. i mean, he may get the tax thing behind him on tuesday when he releases the 2010 tax return but bain capital, look, mitt romney is running on biography. he's running on his own story and he said, barack obama does not know how to run a business, i'd run a business. why does he know how to run a business? because he ran bain capital. but, newt gingrich all ahead has shown what is ahead for him if he gets the nomination, from the obama team on bain capital. they will say, buddy, you threw people out of work, they'll run the most horrible ads, he has got to defend bane in a more general way, and, i think what he has to do, is explain what

was going on, back in the 1980s. and why bain capital and companies like it, not just bane, this is an entire movement, took corporate america, took the private sector back there, and, leaned on it, and restructured those companies. >> dave: the tough part to explain and the attack line is mainly those companies where bain capital went in, took out a lot of money, in some cases hundreds of millions of dollars, only to see that company in some cases go bankrupt. but, you say in your piece in the "wall street journal," not only did bain capital save america but no matter what career turn he takes, it may be the best of his lifetime contributions, to our economic well being. how is that? >> back in the 1980s, the private sector, the late 1970s, the private sector corporations were okay but not great. you have to remember what happened back then. jimmy carter and ronald reagan deregulated large parts of the american economy.

airlines, ground transportation, banking and finance. suddenly the united states was in a much more competitive situation. what mitt romney and a lot of other people did was realize those corporations were sitting on huge amounts of unused cash. they were not being as strong as they could be. and, it wasn't just bain capital, but in the 1980s, half major american corporations, got hostile takeovers. and, what that process did was force the managers at that time to think about how they were running their companies, and they did. and, they restructured and made them more efficient. in the 1990s, most companies did this voluntarily and so, mitt romney and bane put in motion a process that allowed the united states to become a lot stronger economically, at a time when europe remained complacent and, look at the trouble that europe is in, right now, they did not restructure. we know they didn't. romney has to say, i was present when the united states revived
