11:00 pm
what you think about tonight's show, i got e mails i know some of you are mad at me but tell me what you thought. good night from washington. the. >> hello, everyone. i'm dana perino along with kimberly guilfoyle, bob beckel. this is "the five." we begin tonight with that -- sorry. i'm so excited to get started. we'll begin tonight with that major reversal by the susan g. komen foundation. three days it spark add fire storm after it announced it was taking back its support of planned parenthood. they apologized for the decision in the wake of overwhelming pressure from planned parenthood and its allies, the komen foundation now says the funding will continue. this started three days ago and you could sort of see the fire
11:01 pm
storm building and the komen foundation is a private charity. they raise money for breast cancer research. they coo it all over the world. it's a private organization. they've given some of its money to planned parenthood. they were going to take it back because they said planned parenthood wasn't doing enough of the breast cancer work they shut it should be doing to fulfill its mission. then the fire storm erupted and one of our old friends, nancy pelosi, think this is is a big win for planned parenthood. >> it goes to show you, when women speak out, women win and women's health has a big victory this morning. >> the strange thing is i don't know anybody aside from nancy brinker who runs the foundation who has done more for women's health. kimberly, this is now probably going to blow over over the weekend, but how do you think this will set in with the american people thinking, wait a second? if you're a private organization, can't you decide if -- can't you make your own decision about who to give your money to? >> absolute will he. susan g. komen foundation is an
11:02 pm
excellent charitable foundation which is a model essentially for many that are throughout the country. many people feel that they have bowed down to politics. nancy pelosi, democratic pressure, people that are siding with planned parenthood. it's one thing to stick to your gun, but then they reversed it right after they had someone speaking on their behalf, even on this air. it's confusing. >> i wonder, bob, if they had listened to your counsel about if you're in a hole, hand me the shovel and stop digging. >> i think that when you start getting yourself in the controversy like this, just stop digging. i mean -- what i don't understand here is that they gave this money to 19 planned parenthood organization, correct? 16 of which were not capable of doing breast -- >> mammograms. >> i wonder why they gave it to them in the first place then. >> well, i think that's maybe what they were all thinking. one of the things that nancy brinker said they had done in the past year is look at its grants and decide to take a
11:03 pm
closer look at making sure the money they were handing out was going to the right places. but this has caused an eruption because the conservative media had come out in support of what they call the courageous, bold. but then when they reversed it, it backfired. >> not only that, the conservative media said, good for you, susan g. komen. by the way, i run in that race every year. a lot of people -- >> i handed out water. >> we hope it's water. >> by the way, they do need volunteers. >> that's very nice of you, bob. >> let's get this straight. however, there are a lot of people who said, well, number one, we didn't know you were giving to planned parenthood. that may change things a little bit. i hope it doesn't. the other thing is the conservative media said good for you standing up for what you believe in in a flood of donations came into the susan g. komen foundation. >> and also planned parenthood. >> and also more importantly, at least for my perspective, is planned parenthood gets funded.
11:04 pm
they get federal funding. susan g. komen got flooded with donations from conservative groups saying way to go. what do they do? do they turn around and go, we changed our mind? >> the undercurrent of this, greg, is that this conversation is not necessarily about breast cancer or anything in particular about one issue. >> do you want to hear a great planned parenthood joke? >> sure. >> knock knock. >> who is there? >> you'll never know. little abortion humor there. >> oh, my gosh. >> here is the thing, right now what we have is rights are being replaced -- replacing desires. >> i can't believe you said that. >> you just pulled a bob. >> what are you talk being? that's actually thee true. the fact is, the phrase reproductive health has become an umbrella that replaces every kind of activity so that you can't question what they do because it's under this reproductive health. and the left has been very good at creating and changing the language to soften their designs so you have to accept it.
11:05 pm
>> planned parenthood, when you think about breast cancer health, the first person -- if you need help, if you think you might have a problem, i don't know if the first entity that comes to mind is planned parenthood. that might come to mind for other reasons and good reasons, you need to go this, but this question about who is providing abortion. that's really what this is coming down to. >> yes. and the pro-choice militant lobby did a smear campaign against the komen foundation -- >> it worked. >> and it worked, within 48 hours. >> why shouldn't they be proud of what they do? if abortion is good, why do they have o call it reproductive health? >> the original purpose was to get to planned parenthood to do mammograms. the conservative media came in full fledge in support of something they weren't doing. they were not taking -- >> here is something komen did very badly and why they needed to hand the shovel over. their initial explanation was because there is a congressional investigation underway into
11:06 pm
finances of planned parenthood. planned parenthood gets 25, 30% of its funding from federal taxpayer dollars. komen said originally that that was why they were pulling out. then they had another story about 24 hours later saying it was because of do you olympictive services. i think from a pr perspective, and they know it, they really screwed up. >> some of the backlash came from susan komen foundation, different offices around the country saying we want to continue to fund planned parenthood. >> they weren't unified. >> listen, i defer to you guy, but for me, planned parenthood getting $363 million in 2009, the last available numbers, providing 340,000 abortion, we know what planned parenthood does. >> that's what it and. >> not mammograms. >> that's -- bob, let's make a point. at least when you pay the mob for protection, they actually offer the protection.
11:07 pm
here they're intimidating a group and they're not actually doing what they're promised to do. which is the mammograms. >> the idea that they just become aware that planned parenthood is under investigation, every right wing congressman going back for 20 years has investigated planned parenthood. a guy from from florida, extremely conservative. they're always under investigation. this is not new. number two, i get back to my original point. they had nothing to do with abortion when they made their decisions about giving these grants and the right wing media were supporting them for something they didn't do. >> because of the issue of abortion, you got the pro-choice people lined up, pro-life people. that's why this went down the way they did. the komen foundation, i think would have been better off if they had stuck to their guns. >> national review had a great piece in which he talked about, imagine if you -- this is dan foster's analogy. if you are a boy scout troop leader and every year you go to joe's deli and ask for $100 for
11:08 pm
the derby race and then one year joe's deli decides, we're not going to give money this year. it's not been my right as a cub scout leader to try to destroy the reputation of joe's deli because he decided what to do with his own money. >> and throw their salami at him. the fact here is that i happen to be pro-life because of my faith. but i realize, for example -- i know you talk about the catholic thing yesterday, i wasn't here. but 98% of catholic women use planned parenthood for one reason or another -- >> no, no, no. >> contraception. not planned parenthood. >> through planned parenthood. >> no. >> 98% use contraceptive method. and i would guess people at this foundation use contraception as well. >> this was supposed to be about breast cancer. >> political intimidation. >> it is. i remember -- that's why i feel so bad for ambassador nancy
11:09 pm
brinker because they know they had a pr screwup. this is a woman who has done amazing work around the world. she was the head of the protocol office during the bush administration the last couple of years. one of the trips we did when we we want to the middle east, the president had his business in terms of dealing with all the issues in the middle east and mrs. bush ran a separate program parallel to it to establish breast cancer screenings all around the middle east, including in saudi arabia. that was nancy komen's idea. it was health diplomacy at its finest. i think it's like the planned parenthood lobby, it wasn't enough for them to break the window of the house. they had to burn the whole house down. >> can i say one thing? i haven't been on pro choice before i change -- having been on pro-choice boards, please don't react to this thing as an abortion issue. this is a wonderful charitable exercise. if you're liberal out there and you're mad because of all this -- >> what. it is. that's exactly -- >> i'm talking about the susan -- >> that's exactly what we're talking about.
11:10 pm
>> i'm trying to say something nice here in a charitable way. i was just saying i hope everybody participates in the cure run and volunteers because it's an important thing and shouldn't get lost in this fight. >> that's a great way. >> very sweet, bob. >> that's what i was trying to say. you're so used to beating up on me. >> we're going to explain to you later why we're all wearing red we're going to explain to you later why we're all wearing red. you'll have to wait for that because coming up next, we'll talk about is israel really preparing to attack iran? our defense secretary reportedly says it is and it could happen within months. details are next. you can e-mail us at "the five". i wouldn't do that. pay the check?

11:15 pm
>> i never heard of that before. very nice. welcome back to "the five". defense secretary leon panetta reportedly believes there is a strong possibility that israel could strike iran this spring. we put context on this. there has been a lot of discussion in israel, a debate in israel about whether israel should move forward, defense minister barak allude to do this. in the meantime, the united states asked israel not attack iran because they believe the sanctions are now beginning to work. incidentally, you notice that the european community, someone came in the last few weeks, all part of this campaign to keep israel from doing the bombing and so the question really is, isn't that imminent and secondly, should they strike with or without the united states? >> eric? >> i think it is imminent. i think they will. they've shown a willingness to take out the high level
11:16 pm
professors. but what we really need to understand is everyone looks at ahmadinejab as the leader of iran of the he's not. the ayatollah khomeini, who is the leader of the mullah, they're the real rulers in iran and they hate everything about israel. they hate everything about america. so with that kind of hatred, israel probably has no choice but to eventually take out the structure, the nuclear facilities. how they do it, you know, if they have great intel, they can go in and system athlete strike it. if they don't, a -- >> let me ask the question because there is a division in iran now, the value of the iranian currency has fallen 50 purse because of the sanctions. and ahmadinejab and the imams are not getting along. one thing i keep hearing is this will bring the iranians together if they're bombed and the other question is what, if they decide to really do strike at the strait of hormuz and slow down oil? this is a big deal. >> it's very complex. >> you mean the iranians bought
11:17 pm
off their own oil deliveries? >> that would be brilliant. >> and unlikely. extremely complex. the sanctions go back for years. >> yes, they do. >> maybe we now think they're starting to have an effect? okay, that's great. we have huge problems. china is not on board. russia is not on board. you o'clock have all the europeans on board that you want and it's probably not going to matter that much. i think it's strange that secretary panetta made this statement. i don't know whether -- it just seemed an odd thing to do. i don't know whether he meant it on purpose as in we're telling the world that the united states is against this and we're telling israel not to do it. there might have been a little bit of something in that. or it might have just been something that he said that maybe he didn't mean to say as he was walking out of a meeting and he said it. it's very hard to bomb knowledge out of a country. >> that's true. the israelis bombed syria and
11:18 pm
much to the surprise and shock to the international community, seer why did nothing about it. now, i'm not sure i still understand why that is. but we do know a lot of these arab states around iran do not want iran to have the nuclear weapons. >> no, they tonight. >> can i point one thing out, remember, that facility that the israelis bombed in 2007 was actually built and organized by the north koreans who were working with syria. that's why. >> i got you. >> iran is heavily invested in syria. let's not kid around. egypt falls in law with the muslim brotherhood. so we have to keep it a serious focus. i think iran, instead of slowing down their nuclear program is, in fact, trying to speed it up and any suggestion they're open to talks, is simply to distract us because they're running out of time. they're threatening to execute currency speculators as well because of the problem. >> let me ask eric -- or greg the ultimate question. do you think that they will --
11:19 pm
they got the bomb, they would use it against israel? think about this for a second. >> you could only go by what they say. they say oftentimes yes, they would. iran is that crazy tenet that you have in your apartment complex that you don't make eye contact with. but sooner or later, you're going to have to evict him. lucky for the united states, our apartment is far away from theirs. but israel isn't. if iran were where mexico is, we would be israel and we would do something. >> sort of like a time share over there. we do care. >> ask greg whether they would use the bomb or not? the supreme leader, ayatollah khomeini, his words, in light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty god, zionist, israel, and the great satan, america, will soon be defeated. >> okay. >> what does it sound like to you? >> the bush administration i think wisely told the iranians,
11:20 pm
you shoot a bomb there and you're going to be toast as well. the obama administration followed that up. now, if the iranians obviously don't believe it, but i can't imagine a situation where the united states would allow iran to exist as a country on the face of this earth if it took out its greatest ally in the middle east. >> the reason israel is making the plans is because it doesn't feel confident that anybody -- they feel like they'll have to protect themselves. i can understand why. but also this five years ago and -- we had american troops on the border surrounding iran. they were in other conflict, but that was a signal that we are here and we will be able to do something. if all we're talk being are drone attacks and a bomb -- >> has obama ever been to israel? >> not yet. >> he sent a psa to the iranian people. what kind of message is that? you have to send a letter to iran -- >> apologist for america --
11:21 pm
>> there is nobody who can explain to you the complexities of the middle east peace negotiations. it's a very complicated issue. let's not jump on obama. >> really? >> his first speech in office, where was it? in cairo, egypt. >> he's in single digits -- >> let me just say this is going to be a rough segment for eric here. ladies and gentlemen, the obama recovery. thank goodness for the obama recovery. moving full speed ahead. great numbers out today. may turn out to be a rough new month for my good friend, eric bolling. things keep going so well. we'll talk about it next on "the five." >> how happy are you? >> i'm very happy my j [♪...]
