big super bowl ad for chrysler. some think it is a pro-obama situation. we will get to the bottom of that. >> a man has got to know his limitations. caution. you are about to enter the no spin zone. factor begins right now. >> captions by closed captioning services >> bill: hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thanks for watching us tonight. president obama and the super bowl, that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. yesterday, nbc matt lauer interviewed the president for six minutes a few hours before the super bowl game. pretty standard stuff. the president saying his improving the economy and he is watching iran very closely. last year you may remember that i your humble correspondent interviewed the president before the game. we talked with him for about 14 minutes and the tone was very different. >> do you deny that you are a ma'am who wants to redistribute wealth? >> absolutely. >> you deny that. >> bill, i didn't raise taxes

once. i lowered taxes over the last two years. >> bill: but the -- >> lowered taxes for the last two years. what i. >> bill: entitlements that you championed do redistribute wealth in the sense that they provide insurance coverage for those that don't have. >> what is true. in this country no reason why if you get sick you should go bankrupt. the notion that is a radical principle i don't think the majority of people would agree with you. >> bill: why do the majority of the people in the polls not support obama care. >> actually, i think it's pretty evenly. >> bill: it's close. >> it's evenly divided, bill. >> bill: obama issue now in the supreme court to be decided by summer. another interesting part of the interview was egypt. >> the muslim brotherhood gray concern to a lot of the people are they a threat to the u.s.a. >> i think the muslim brotherhood is one faction in egypt. they don't have majority support in egypt. they are -- but they are well organized. there are strains of bear

challenger can define the danger of america's massive debt in a way that will get the attention of the voters that's not going to be easy. independence try to decide who to support. those debates will be high tension expositions no question. talking points suspects one of the closest elections in the nation's history. that's the memo. now for the top story tonight is president obama gaining momentum. joining us now west coast senior analyst brit hume. i didn't get you at the golf course. we didn't pull you off voting. >> welcome to boca grand. >> it's a beautiful place that's why you are there because you are a guy that mingles among the beautiful people. now, pomple far different guy with matt lauer yesterday than he was with me a year ago. why? is he more confident? >> you are a far different guy

from matt lauer. did you much more jousting with him than the at least the portion of the interview that we saw yesterday showed. he got a couple of nulgs as you reflected. he observed re-election. he didn't think not made a decision to attack iran. so he made a little bit of news. your interview i thought was more challenging. played at greater length. you did well, he did well. >> bill: i think the president's demeanor was different yesterday. i think he is much more confident now than he was maybe even two or three months ago. scenarioly two or three months ago or a little past that he would have had reason to be worried. the economy was weak. job growth was poor. things have picked up. the economy, you know, i'm not sure how fast it's growing but job growth has begun a bit. how long it will last is anybody's guess. that's the thing -- that of course is the number that we all watched the most when you are looking for the outcome presidential election. so the president has some

reason to be confident. of course, he can't help but be heartened by the spectacle of the republic candidates tearing each other apart the way they have been. >> you agree with me is he a more confident guy right now. what about the polls? a "the washington post" poll also shows what rasmussen showed that the president would beat mitt romney. i don't think that means anything right now. am i wrong? >> no. i think you are right. i don't think that poll means very much right now. romney is at a place he is in the middle of this battle with newt gingrich. both men have been attacking each or o. which in terms of the way they are viewed by the public at large as opposed to the republic electorate are not helpful. romney may be low point city stage. if this battle goes on much longer he could dip further. by the time is he all dressed up and they have a convention if indeed he is the nominee and is he presented to the public and the favorable light that conventions are about,

and he is a winner, he will look different to the public. presumably he will look better. >> bill: would it be smarter. >> look more presidential. >> bill: would it be smarter now that he is ahead by a substantial margin to campaign against barack obama and not continue the food fight with newt gingrich? would it be smarter for him to just take a cool law lated historic risk that he is ahead, he will stay ahead and focus in on his eventual challenger or is he going to have to continue with the gingrich stuff? >> well, not just gingrich. he has now gun to attack rick santorum and the expectation that rick santorum could have a pretty good day tomorrow and begin to emerge, perhaps, surfacing -- well, yes. and possibly minnesota when all is said and done out there. bill, i think that this is a tough question for the romney people. they have let up on the attacks, twits. they let up after iowa and i think they thought that they were fine after new hampshire. and then gingrich came back and they started to attack him

again in south carolina but it was too late. and then they just beat him within an inch of his life with attack ads in florida and it worked. they have continued that i think they are probably afraid to let up and go 100% positive and moreover romney has been on the attack during the debate. and in the florida debates at least he seemed to do pretty well. what i think is that they are probably facing a real dilemma. romney has raised his game on the negative side. the question really is is for a lot of republic voters is can he raise his game on the positive side and begin to convince the many republic voters who have doubts about him that he is one of them and has a strong positive agenda. >> bill: i think he showed he could do that in nevada on saturday when he got auto% of the vote and the exit polls show most conservative voters out in nevada went for romney. that wasn't a particularly negative campaign out there in that caucus, was it? >> well, it was to some extent, bill. there was a tiny little, you know, just 20 some thousand

voters, i guess. it's a different matter when you are campaigning on a larger state and you get sort of a larger national audience as well. i think the nevada caucuses this saturday night. and soen o, i'm not sure how visible they were to the public at large. caesars palace than there was at caucus at nevada. [ laughter ] that's probably true. all right. so, at this point, president obama, i think we can say is more confident. game suspect. the polls rupp for him. the republics are still kind of fleshing it out what's going to happen. brit hume, thank you very much. >> bill: you have the last thought, go ahead. people will yell at me if i don't get it in. >> until this question of the republic party is settled, this obama may continue to lead in the polls. >> bill: yeah. i don't think there? i doubt about it next on the rundown, using ethnic people in political ads? is that acceptable these days?

pete hoekstra. to me this was child and given that you know what, the republic party has all these problems because it's almost an all-whited party and got all these issues with immigration, minorities, mocking people. i just don't think that was an effect forgive add for pete. it creates problems and crosses the line. >> bill: asian and pacific islanders vote group nonpartisan group, mary katharine says quote, it's very disturbing that mr. hoekstra's campaign shows harmful stereotypes encourage anti-asian sentiment. what do you think of that? >> i think it was not a smart ad. delve into something that's going to get a racial conversation started not a good situation. you can talk about china without going there it felt dated. it did not feel. >> bill: it wasn't china it was almost veems viewpoint

vietnamese with rice patties. asian woman happy her economy is doing much better at the expense of the american economy and speaking broken english which is, of course, a cliche. i don't know if that's a smart thing to do. >> the ad came from fred davis who is a republic ad guru known for working outside the box. and what he does is he does catch people's attention. bad way and other times in good ways. he did the ads for governor snyder, republic governor in michigan in 2010. which are really good called one tough nerd. he did the celebrity ad for mccain even though mccain didn't end up winning. overall he did i'm not a witch and demon sheep. >> bill: good research. catching attention not necessarily in a good way. , with all due respect unless you have the asian girl saying

what she said. okay. now, people ♪ people, who need people, okay? >> bill: remember that song? barbra streisand does it a little bit better than me. you know. are the luckiest people, juan, in the world. you know they are. luckiest people in the world. barbra streisand hates you. on the huffington post, she says, quote, what juan williams failed to point out is that barack obama has not put anyone on food stamps. the grossly irresponsible and greedy practices of those on wall street created the most severe recession our country has ever experienced since the great recession. these events along with the continuous deregulation of our financial sector conspired to make record number of people food assistance. juan williams completely missed this opportunity to reveal the real truth behind newt gingrich's racist assertions. ♪ are the luckiest people in the world. >> yeah. thank you. well, i guess she thinks that

to begin. >> bill: well, some republicans did not like that ad. i was frankly offended by it i'm a huge fan of clinton eastwood. extremely well done ad. sign of what happens when you have chicago style politics and the president of the united states and political minute i couldn't knows from minions using tax dollars to buy corporate advertising. >> bill: moments ago before air time clinton eastwood gave us a statement i'm going to read it to you, quote. i want to stay that the spin stops with you guys. no spin on that ad on that i'm certain. i'm certainly not politically affiliated about mr. obama. message about job growth and spirit of america. i think all politicians would agree with it spirit was okay. i'm not supporting any opinion. chrysler didn't have ads in the ad. anything they gave me went to charity. if obama or politician wants to run with the spirit of the ad i say go for it quote clinton eastwood. mr. paul, i take him at his word that this wasn't an overt

political ad or anything that clinton eastward did for president obama. do you take him at his word? >> from clinton's perspective? >> bill: is he an honest man i know this guy for a long time. about a straight shooter as you can possibly get. but subliminally karl rove and you took it as a favorable to obama? >> that's what advertising is all about. >> bill: it's a car ad though? >> yes. but the reason why ads work is because when we're not thinking, we are thinking. there is something else happening. it's branding literally. >> bill: what grabbed you about the ad that made you think it was in favor of the president? >> to me it was a classic thank you ad. thank you for bailing us out. thank you for what you did. >> bill: didn't say anything about bailing out. >> didn't have to. >> bill: you took it as because president obama put a lot of stimulus money into detroit,. >> that's right. >> bill: that this was a thank you for doing that. >> we weren't here a year ago tonight talking about how

eminem, the ad started the detroit is on the way back was ploy. detroit came up with the ad detroit is on the way back buy american cars. very successful ad. detroit said let's do it again. >> bill: chrysler not everybody in detroit. but the point is that smart guys like mr. paul and karl rove, you would cede both of them are smart guys. they took it as a subliminal political message that the government in washington, giving taxpayer money to private industry to keep them from going down, was worthy and good. that's how they took it. >> that's right. >> you know, that's the beauty of subliminal ads. you can take it any way you want to. i turned to my dad and said is clinton eastwood announcing is he running for office? >> he was actually doing an ad he is joining the fray. >> bill: stimulus or bailout money didn't enter into your mind at all. >> no.

>> bill: this is a fascinating discussion. so now eastwood, who i think tried to do a good thing, all right? would you both cede he tried to do a good thing? he is trying to get americans saying we are coming back. we're going to rally around. we have got bad times. we will work our way out of it like we have always done. this guy is getting hammered as an idealogue he is caught in the political wars. so, you know, that's why people are cautious doing any of this stuff. i don't think that's fair to eastwood. >> i'm sure his pr people are saying you are going to have to answer tough questions when they asked what is one punch what's the second punch going to refer to? is it a first term? is it -- i know this guy. believe me. is he not trying to get anybody elected. >> he didn't write the copy. >> no, he didn't. he read the copy. is he director and actor. he knows the words he is saying. he went over and over and over. i don't think it entered into his mind.

>> bill: unresolved problem segment tonight, 1 million moms, the family organization is upset that j.c. penney has hired ellen degeneres as a spokesperson. they are demanding the company fire her. we tried to get one of the 1 million moms come on the factor tonight. we'll could not. apparently all million moms are busy. joining us from chicago sandy rerose fox news contributor. business story for me. let's start there. is it right for any organization, liberal, conservative, doesn't matter to demand a company fire a spokesperson who has done nothing legally wrong, nothing at all? is that right? >> well, two things, bill, we saw a little bit of that sort of the susan komen foundation

and saw congress weigh in on it at least the senators do that prirst citizens they have something to say about how they feel about how the business -- the place that they do business with is operating. they are free to do that. i would say this though, bill, in the case of 1 million moms and people like me, just because something is legal doesn't mean it's moral. that's the difference. with abortion. people think. >> bill: you have a right to your opinion and we respect that opinion and fox news channel i think has made a tremendous contribution to the country by respecting traditional opinion. this as i said is a business deal. ms. degeneres is hired as a spokesperson c. penny. j.c. penney has absolutely perfect right to do that as you have in your belief system. there she is earning a salary to represent the department store chain. and then the million moms say hey, because we feel a certain way about miss degeneres'

lifestyle you need to fire her. i don't think that's the spirit of america, sandy, i have got to tell you. >> bill, spokes people stand for something, people are chosen because they stand for something thing. they represent companies, it matters very much what they stand for. from my perspective it isn't about ellen degeneres about mainstreaming something that is not acceptable to christian and traditional family people all over the country. >> bill: is about ellen degeneres and this is where we run into a problem. if you remember with the mccarthy era, in the 50s and they were trying to hunt down communist sympathizers and not let them work and put them. >> bill: wait. what is the difference between mccarthy era communist blacklist in the 50s and the million moms saying, hey, j.c. penney and all you other stores don't you hire any gay people, don't you dare. what is the difference?

weekdays with bernie segment tonight. as you may know there was a big abortion controversy last week when susan komen foundation said it was not going to fund planned parenthood any longer. the left wing press was outraged. >> i come here today expressing the anger of a lot of people channeling through them, you see it on twitter and everywhere. some people would say that, i mean the anger that's being expressside going to hit you in the pocket book worked so hard to create a bipartisan organization. look at your facebook page has people cutting pink ribbons in half. your branding is at stake. >> bill: after a few days of tht kind of stuff they surrendered and will continue to do business with planned parenthood. now how the abortion story was covered. bernie goldberg joins me this evening. interesting this story is almost the same we have with sandy rios. on the other side now. the intolerance is on the left about the abortion situation. they don't respect people who are pro-life. and so that's why i put these

segments back to back. what say you? >> well, there is something that needs to be said no matter how uncomfortable it makes some people listening to us. there is a strain of bigotry. that's the word i want to use. running through conservative america. it doesn't mean all conservatives are bigots or even that most conservatives are bigots. that's not what i'm saying. there is a strain of bigotry and it goes against gay people, for instance. ellen degeneres did nothing wrong. she is gay. right? there is -- reasonable people may disagree on gay marriage. that's fine. but to call on somebody's dismissal to be fired, to lose her job because she is gay is bigotry. i don't care how many people listening to us right now don't like that. >> bill: the argument though. >> let me say one other thing

briefly,bill. in the middle of the last century in the 1950s and 1960's, there was another strain of bigotry on the right and it was against black people. that has to leave the conservative movement. i used to be a liberal. i have became a conservative because liberals were a little too crazy for me. a lot too crazy for me. actually. you know what? i am immensely uncomfortable with the bigotry on the right and i don't care how many people don't like it. i am sick of it. >> i am going to stick up now for the million moms who i think are wrong in the j.p. penny situation just briefly and i want to get on from this abortion thing. it's not ellen degeneres' homosexuality. it's how she presents it to the public that they believe they believe the million sandy rios and million moms that she flaunts it she puts it in their face. >> she flaunts it. i flaunt my hetero sexuality. >> bill: no you don't.

we don't know about your personal life. you don't walk around. >> what do you mean he flaunts it. >> bill: she makes it a cause celeb. that's what they object to. >> there are minority that in many places are under attack. she has every right to make it a cause. and it's not -- there is no agenda. she is just gay. she wants to live her life as a gay person. >> bill: okay. >> i'm telling you. i'm sick of this. >> bill: bigotry against pro-life people is i think way more than the bigotry against gay people in this country particularly in the media the media supports gay people generally speaking. >> right. well, that sound bite that you played of andrea mitchell i think andrea mitchell told us more than she intended to. first, she says that there is a lot of anger in america over the komen's charity decision not to fund planned parenthood. she is absolutely right.

what she left out is that there was a lot of happiness in america over the decision to stop giving money to planned parenthood. andrea mitchell and a lot of mainstream reporters don't know these pro-life people. they don't travel in the same universe as these people. they don't live -- those pro-life people don't live in the same liberal bubble that andrea mitchell lives in. then the second point she made and she said, you know, the komen charity worked very hard follow this.isan. nonpartisan, nonpartisan when they give money to planned parenthood but they are partisan when they stop giving money. let me tell you what it is about in a sentence, bill. liberal journalists think that people who are pro-choice are sophisticated reasonable and rational. they think that people who are pro-life are not sophisticated, are not reasonable, and are right

wing. what most reporters need to do, so-called mainstream reporters is understand that people who live between manhattan and malibu are americans, too. they have values too. they are not the same as the liberal elite media's values but they are values that should be respected, also. >> bill: all right, bernie. we appreciate it and i agree. i just think that very, very few -- very few media people in this country respect the pro-life position, which, when you just boil it all down, what do pro-life people want? they want to save babies. that's what they want. is that terrible? i don't think so. bernie goldberg, everybody, reality check on deck. madonna at the super bowl. a big hit or was it boring? you can decide. check is next.
