but is he ignoring a red flag? or maybe three red flags? details straight ahead. we're going to review that play plus taking god out of the military. why the air force may be forced to change hundreds of years of history. "fox & friends" starts right now. >> attention, rick santorum, start your tivo. this is the morning you've been waiting for. three primaries and caucuses yesterday. and you won all three. congratulations, mr. santorum. >> i mean, who would have predicted this? a couple of days ago, it looks like mitt romney would have taken two or three. and you're seeing colorado which took the longest to get in. colorado was a big win for rick santorum and it's a place where
3:01 am
mitt romney won by 20 points over john mccain four years ago. >> had 60% last time. >> he also won minnesota last time. there's a lot to take away from what happened last night. we should mention that in missouri, newt gingrich is not on the ballot in case you're keeping all your totals at home. but the bottom line here is that there was basically no advertisement going on in these three states. so is that the theme now? is it that negative advertising which you've heard me say on this couch i'm not a fan of. you've heard steve say it works but without any ads, they're both true but without those negative ads, look what happened. and you got to wonder also if those negative ads with the sniping between gingrich and romney made santorum rise to the top. remember in those last couple of debates, he was talking about policy, folks, he wasn't talking about you did this and you did that. and i'm wondering if that has a huge effect. those two things. >> well, it was two weeks ago the debates and i thought and we all thought he was fantastic but
3:02 am
it was also easier being rick santorum then because no one was shooting at him. >> be ready, they'll come at him. >> he's very conserveive on all the issues. you may not agree with him. he's not going to get off the mark. i thought mitt romney's post-game interviews after the major win in florida where he admitted hes spoke might have had an effect on these three races. >> you have to wonder whether or not it was a brilliant move on mr. santorum's part many he didn't campaign that much in florida and nevada and of course, they both went to romney. he instead focused on what was happening yesterday and mission accomplished. nonetheless, at the end of the night when he said thank you to all of his supporters, he went not after newt gingrich who has said look, he should drop out. he didn't go after mitt romney so much, he went after the man at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. listen. >> there's probably another person who maybe -- maybe is
3:03 am
listening to your cheers here tonight, also. and that might be at 1600 pennsylvania avenue, you better start listening to the voice of the people. but then again, i wouldn't be surprised if he isn't listening. why would you think he would be listening now? has he ever listened to the voice of america before? no, he -- why? because he thinks he knows better. he thinks he's smarter than you. he thinks he's someone who is a privileged person who should be able to rule over all of you. but we have a different message for him. >> and rick santorum obviously pumped up. mitt romney gave a relatively quick speech. newt gingrich said were there elections last night? i didn't know. i'm going to ohio. this makes it even muddy. muddier than i thought. see colorado and you see the
3:04 am
fact that only 21 of the 33 delegates so he wins colorado, right? he only has 21 delegates, why? they're going to do it in a month or two. at which time all the candidates still in the race will circle back and try to individually win over those delegates to get them into their column. >> the other interesting thing is the burst that rick santorum needed? remember when he won iowa and nobody knew that. so he didn't get that perception burst going into new hampshire and going into south carolina. the other really important thing is you remember that national poll we showed you yesterday, who was the only candidate in that particular poll, i believe it was rasmussen that beat president obama? it was a surprising result. rick santorum. was that a precursor so to what we saw happening last night? there was a lot to be read into that poll. it was a national poll even though we were look at three states last night. >> right. by the way, we have rick santorum. he will be on this program. he -- of the major candidates who has been on this program more than any of the others, he'll be joining us just about two hours from now.
3:05 am
meanwhile, mitt romney as brian mentioned, he had a relatively short speech. he would like to fast forward -- fast forward undoubtedly to the next primaries. michigan where he's got favorite son status. >> maine on the 11th. >> exactly. he'll probably do well there because he's from new england. you have michigan where he's got most favored son status and arizona as well where it looks as if he could do very well. nonetheless, he says at the end of the day, folks, i really truly in my heart believe i will be the guy standing against barack obama. listen. >> i want to congratulate senator santorum and wish him the very best, we'll keep campaigning down the road. i expect to become your nominee with your help. so i want to congratulate all of my fellow republicans. particularly senator santorum and i look forward to the contest to come. but we're going to take our message of liberty and
3:06 am
prosperity to every corner of the country. and when this primary season is over, we're gonna stand united as a party behind our nominee to defeat barack obama and to restore the values that have made america the greatest nation in the history of the earth. >> it's the word united that's important there, i think. can mitt romney unite the conservative base with his message? that seems to be the prevailing message that comes out of these contests when he does not win. and last night, when bret baier had his show on at 11:00 p.m. and they were deciding and analyzing what this all meant, amy stoddard who is freak -- frequently on that show had this to say. >> he's laid the groundwork, the best organization of any of the candidates in colorado, an organization that he was planning to win with in november. he was set up for the general election. if he loses there tonight, it's
3:07 am
a strong statement about anti-romney sentiment that's left in the party and the possibility that santorum truly can consolidate all of these anti-romney votes and become a more serious threat than newt gingrich has been to romney thus far. >> chris? >> the one thing that romney is going to start doing, they say, is one thing he does is learn from his unsuccessful outings and this was unsuccessful no matter how you look at it. first he said i'm going to continue to compete in primaries that matter. essentially diminishing because the delegates haven't been assigned for the most part and then he might have to change his events. right now, he shows up. he gives a speech. and he leaves. what does rick santorum do? rick santorum shows up, gives a speech and then answers questions to the point where it actually annoys the media. >> sure. >> but he just goes into length on everything. >> i think the message is what upsets the conservative base, that romney will say oh, these states don't matter. see, i think that upsets the people that not only live in those states but people who feel the same way in other states. and you have to wonder now if
3:08 am
you're in the romney camp, can you only win when you flood the market with negative ads? >> or -- >> or ads in particular. >> ads in particular. that's got to be a question this morning. >> if i don't advertise, will anyone buy my stuff? he's got money. that's part of it and he just said, you know, considering all the states we have coming up, i'm want going to focus on this but he was expects up until three days ago to win two of those three states. i think he was prepared to lose one. i don't think he was prepared to lose all three. >> as bad a night that mitt romney had, you figure newt gingrich. let's get to the debates and there will be one debate before super tuesday. it will be february 22nd. a chance for newt once again to shine on the stage. of course, you'll see it and we'll dissect it right afterwards. >> all right. lots to talk about today. in the meantime, we have to bring you some headlines. begin with the chilling 911 call made moments before josh powell set fire to his home with his two young sons inside. the caller, a social worker who had just dropped those boys off
3:09 am
for a visit. she begged police to come quick only to be told it wasn't a priority? >> i'd like to pull out of the driveway because i smell gasoline and he won't let me in. how long will it be? >> i don't know, we have to respond to emergency, life threatening situations first. >> this could be life threatening. he went to court on wednesday and he didn't get his kids back. and this is really -- i'm afraid for their lives. >> that call made at least seven minutes before the house went up in flames. and that wasn't the only warning sign. both powell's sister and lawyer called police earlier in the day saying they'd received strange e-mail and voice messages from josh powell hinting he might do something drastic. police trying to figure out why he withdrew $5,000 from his bank account before he killed himself and his two boys. lot of questions on that one. new day and brand new violence

>> wow, is rick santorum's three states sweep a game changer in the race for the g.o.p. nomination? or is mitt romney somebody who didn't want to compete in a state where delegates aren't going to be issued right away? let's ask former advisor to president clinton and fox news contributor dick morris, how big is this in this race? >> big deal. huge. i think it has two key implications. mitt romney has not closed the sale with the voters. he thought he was in a zero sum
3:17 am
game with gingrich. if he destroyed gingrich, which i think he did, he would coast to the nomination and he didn't think about rick santorum. the second thing is that it shows that there is a real -- that santorum is now on the verge of winning the anti-romney primary. because what's significant here is not only that he won these three states, but that he finished so far ahead of gingrich in the two in which gingrich was on the ballot and when gingrich wasn't on the ballot, all of the votes he would have gotten seemed to have gone to santorum in missouri. so i think that this is huge. there is a real possibility now that it becomes a two-way race of santorum and romney and in a two-way race, romney has never gotten a majority of those votes. so if he really has to start closing the deal with republicans. he relied too much on negative advertising. >> all right. that was a mistake clearly and great analysis, as usual, but i got to bring you to something else. is there something mitt did the day after florida where it seemed as though the huge win
3:18 am
would propel him to the nomination? when he made that comment about i don't care about the very poor, we know what he meant but that's not the way it came across. did that resonate? >> no. no. i don't think so at all. i think every single person who heard the one comment knows the other which is the full context in which he said it. so i don't think that that's a -- that's a factor. what i think is the factor here, brian, is everybody is fed up with negative ads. they've had up to here with them. they've watched the republicans destroying one another and they're worried about obama coming in. so the one guy who hasn't thrown negatives, the one guy who hasn't been part of this food fight between gingrich and romney, he benefits. and i think the -- i think if romney just doubles up and does negatives on santorum figuring he'll take a second guy down, that's not going to be effective. i think that romney has got to go back to the positive message and close this deal with the voters. >> right. he's never been the frontrunner
3:19 am
before. therefore, he's never been attacked by two sides. mitt romney and newt gingrich have. we'll see how he withstands the pressure and he'll be joining us in about an hour. >> i also just want to note that on my web site dickmorris.com i have a petition which i hope people sign to all four of these campaigns to cut out the negative advertising. they won't do it on their own. but we can get them to do it and i think the voters of minnesota and colorado and missouri took a long step toward doing that last night. >> right. got two primaries coming up on the 28th and maine caucus in between and a lot of time to listen to the candidates in a debate to make the decision. dick morris is sticking around. amongst his topics, he has a prediction about what the president will do about the situation between israel and iran. can you say lip service? and attorney general eric holder sued. brand new details about the heat he's facing. it's not over fast & furious this time. thanks for waking up. please wake up everybody in your house and use my name.
