>> wow is all you can say when you listen to jennifer hudson singing that tribute to whitney houston. i can't think of a more difficult job one day after whitney houston has died to have to come on center stage like that in front of kazillions of people and pull off one of the greatest songs ever. and only she, i can think of about one other person who might be able to do that. jennifer hudson, what a tribute. >> maybe aretha franklin. when you have jennifer hudson, talk about someone that a lot of people were comparing to whitney houston with that type of potential that she's already done on broadway. she says that whitney houston was a role model for her so emotionally that must have been tough to get through and you know what happened. over the weekend, the passing of whitney houston and, of course, last night at the grammys, so she was there in los angeles for that reason. and her name and her legacy was thought -- was throughout the whole ceremony. >> there's some video from past years.

the p.c. correctness going on. let's go now to why whitney may have died. apparently, in the bathtub, maybe she drowned but the real story here is going to be the addiction that she suffered from for the last two decades of her career. once again, we see somebody potentially die young because of drugs and alcohol after having the entire world in front of them. >> her career really ended in 1992 when she married bobby brown. she seemed to fall off the charts and be nothing but sensational headline after sensational headline for the wrong reason. people wondering how they stayed together. they did. but she came out of it and seemed to be on the right track for the most part. amongst the drugs found in the bathroom, valium and xanax, they said there were about a half dozen bottles of prescription drugs and this is the new ugly trend. it's not so much the drugs you're getting on the street corner. it's the drugs you're getting from your doctor. >> that's right. accidental overdoses have killed

more americans -- >> we don't know that yet. >> no. i'm just speaking -- i'm just speaking about accidental overdoses in general have killed more americans than car accidents. it sounds like they are able to determine that apparently she did drown because she did find water in her lungs when she did the autopsy. they did the autopsy yesterday. this is the last video. that actually is the last song whitney houston ever performed. also, in the very latest, her daughter has been released from the hospital. bobbi christina was rushed to the hospital apparently twice over anxiety and her ex-husband of 15 years, bobby brown has canceled his tour. >> he went to a mississippi concert and canceled the rest. that's so interesting, the video we just saw from thursday night where she evidently left, she had to be held up by her staffers and the circumstances, too, regarding her death, i find also very intriguing with four bodyguards standing outside the bathroom. >> of course. here we go again with the people allegedly who are enabling somebody who has been in

desperate straits for decades, folks. that reminds me of anna nicole smith. it reminds me of heath ledger dying from prescription drugs. reminds me of amy winehouse and the list goes on and on. let's bring in somebody who knew whitney houston very well. he interviewed the pop singer several times, joined by entertainment journalist john murray. good morning. thanks for being with us early this morning. we're talking about this untimely death. was it really untimely? were we watching a downward spiral unfortunately with whitney houston? >> we all know about whitney houston's history with drug abuse and, you know, and whitney, and in her infamous interview with diane sawyer talked about cocaine and several other illegal drugs. for her to die from prescription drugs, not the illegal stuff that had affected her voice, affected her career and affected so many aspects of her life, that's shocking to some. if people thought she was going to go, it would be the struggle

she battled for so long. >> important difference to talk about. it was, perhaps, legal drugs and not illegal. you mentioned diane sawyer. here's a portion of her big interview in 2002 that you were alluding to. >> if you had to name the biggest devil among them for you. >> that would be me. i can tell you that i'm not a person who wants to die. i'm not a -- i'm a person who has life and i want to live. >> that's the same interview that she said i've never done crack, crack is wack. and show me the receipts. >> you know, what was left of her talent? were you convinced from your many interviews -- from your interviews with her that she was -- it was just a matter of her

cleaning up and getting out there again at the age of 48 or do you think she did irreparable damage to her voice. >> the voice is not in mint condition. i don't know if the drugs caused the voice to deteriorate because there are examples of singers like chaka khan and natalie cole that have been open about their drug addiction and drug abuse and their voices are in great condition. whitney was a smoker and chain smoker at that. tons of photographers of her being out in atlanta smoking cigarettes which is the worst thing a singer can do to their voice. you showed the video from two nights before the grammys where she was singing with r&b singer kelly price. whitney who was once a first soprano in the "i want to dance with somebody" was singing in i atenor voice with kelly price that night. it was sad she had lost so many octaves in her vocal range. >> don't you think we're doing a disservice, i know you're an entertainment journalist but a lot of young kids are looking up

to folks in entertainment and stuff, don't you think we're doing a disservice saying it was just prescription drugs, potentially? prescription drugs, i don't know, maybe this is going to be the new way that we should look at what they can do to people even though they're legal. >> i'm not make light of how whitney died at all. any abuse of any type of drug is wrong whether it is illegal drugs or prescription drugs. there is an epidemic in this country where people are abusing sleeping pills, prescription drugs, all types of forms of drugs and so that needs to be addressed. in the case of whitney, she's a cautionary tale of what not to do if you want to become a pop star and r&b singer. so many great accolades. so many great milestones. so many great feats in her career but you can't talk about the good times without talking about the drugs as a troubled times. >> indeed. thank you very much. of course, the grammys, the 54th grammys will be remembered for two women, whitney houston and adele. keep in mind, adele had career threatening surgery just after

a strange, loud noise. the crew of a u.s. airways flight heard unsettling sounds after leaving charlotte on its way to charleston, west virginia. the pilot decided to turn around and make an emergency landing. the plane's 44 passengers were put on different flights and mechanics are trying to figure out what caused that noise. the search for answers in the powell family tragedy turned to a washington state landfill. dozens of volunteers sifted through thousands of pounds of recycled paper this weekend looking for new clues. investigators acting on a tip that josh powell disposed of some things one day before he killed himself and his two sons in a house. over the weekend, a comforter found in his rented storage unit tested positive for blood. powell was a person of interest in his wife susan's 2009 disappearance but was never charged with that crime. video that will melt your heart. 5-year-old girl survives a deadly avalanche and an incredible rescue caught on camera.

that really what we're talking about here? >> what we're talking about is a tax -- we're taking revenue that goes directly to the social security trust fund and we're taking about 2% off of 6.2% and so it will simply hasten the insolvency of social security but it's an election year and things like this are tough to see rationally in an election year. >> so originally when the payroll tax cut was implemented, it was done so because we were in a recession and it was thought that maybe this would stimulate the economy by putting a little bit of dollars back in people's wallet but my question this morning is has it actually worked. does it create jobs? >> i don't think any serious economist thought that taking 2% off the employees share of 6.2% would necessarily generate jobs. it's more to generate votes really so here we are a year later and some of us said at that time, let's not put this in place because a year from now, there's no way in an election year, we're going to say all right, we're going to get rid of

this now and that's where we are. >> so you're one of the few republicans now in the house who still is against this and we all remember a couple of months ago when you basically stood up the whole deal, right? republicans in the house say hey, we're not going to pass this thing and then eventually you caved in and agreed to do it. >> well, some of us, like i said, have been against it all along so whether it passed or not a couple of months ago is neither here nor there but my position has always been, unless you have courage to reform the entitlement programs and we don't in congress right now, then we shouldn't mess with the revenue stream. that's what we're doing. >> is this going to be the new norm now. will this payroll tax cut be the new norm as far as businesses and employees moving forward? >> that's a great point. what are we going to do next year? if we're -- as republicans, if we take control of the senate and we take control of the white house, how can we then say, all right, we're going to get rid of what is perceived by some as a middle class tax cut. it will be very difficult to do

1,000 days since congress passed a budget resolution into law and now the president is sending lawmakers his latest plan which adds up to over $1.3 trillion. but the white house is defending the excessive spending. >> when we took office, the economy was falling so fast that first thing we had to do was put a bottom in. that cost money in the recovery act. it cost money in terms of lost revenue and slower economic growth. we're on track now. we've seen several months of sustained economic growth and job creation but we're not out of the woods yet. >> that's why we're going to be spending a lot more on the president's new, yet to be released budget. >> what jack lew said was directly contradicting what the president said he would do back in 2009. yes, he said -- president obama said i will cut the deficit in half. instead, the budget which is going to be presented today will raise the deficit this year to

$1.33 trillion. >> the interesting thing is the last couple of days, you've been speaking about moral obligations in our country. and i find that yet, here is another topic where one could ask that question, answer it for me. >> ok. do we have a moral obligation to tax more, spend more, run up the debt more and have more government? is that the morality? the moral stamps of this administration? the answer is yes, it is. this budget, it's not a real budget. it's not a financial document. it's a political statement. >> it's not written to pass. let's take a look at what's in it because last year's budget was very similar and got no votes in the senate. $350 billion on programs to boost jobs in the short term focusing on manufacturing. $476 billion for rebuilding roads and other surface transportation. isn't that what the stimulus was supposed to do? and $50 billion for teachers and first responders and they want to repair some schools. >> that's a stop to the unions.

$476 billion for infrastructure. it will be built with union labor to union scale. $60 billion for teachers and first responders. that essentially goes towards the teachers and their unions. >> teachers are employed because the tax revenues -- >> that pension fund! >> let's go ahead and take a look at how the president plans to pay for it because obviously, we'd like to know $1.5 trillion for new taxes on corporations and high income earners. wait a minute, i thought they weren't supposed to do that during bad times plus half a trillion in more cuts to the department of defense. >> look at the first line first. $1 1/2 trillion, new taxes on corporations. that's banks and oil companies, ok, unpopular targets, go get them. it's a tax and new tax on millionaires and it's bring back the old tax rates of those making $250,000 or more. tax the rich. >> why is there no discussion about entitlement spending? i mean, that seems to be the elephant in the room in this entire discussion and instead of making serious cuts in a nation that's been discussing this debt now on a serious level for more

hoody and he'd come from a concert tour in mississippi because in addition to the fact their ex had died, their daughter, 18-year-old bobbi christina had been hospitalized overwhelmed by stress and anxiety in los angeles. he stopped his concert tour, hopped on a plane and landed last night. did not talk to anyone. went right from the plane through the crowd into a limo and presumably off to the beverly hilton hotel to be with bobbi christina. so the focus now, what happened? we know she had been in the bathtub for, perhaps, an hour before hairdresser or one of her entourage found her. there was water in her lungs. we know there were prescription pills in her hotel room. xanax and atavan so the theory, one working theory although the police or coroners won't go into the detail is she simply drowned, whether she fell asleep or lapsed into unconsciousness and sunk into the water, that's something that these toxicology tests will hopefully reveal but again, it takes time because they have to be done and done

again and remember in the michael jackson case, the same coroner's office, it took him three months before they came up with an official cause of death. that's the very latest. perhaps more from beverly hills police today. >> thanks very much. to listen to doctors analyzing this last night, guys, they said if you actually fall asleep in the bathtub and your face goes under water, you wake up. i mean, you wake up if you're actually sleeping so it would have to be a combination of other drugs that would put you under. >> that's why they're waiting until the results are in in a couple of weeks or month. other headlines for you this morning. it's been a mystery for 28 years. now cops in california say a map drawn by a convicted serial killer could bring an end to dozens of unresolved missing persons cases dating back to 1984. that's because wesley sherman-tyme dubbed part of the duo dubbed the speed freak killers turned over the map from prison. they were called the speed

marseau a lifetime achievement award for speech therapy. he didn't do anything! teachers have more responsibility than just reading, writing and arithmetic. you're supposed to teach character, hard work, dignity. all he's taught kids is how to work the system. his hardest work he's done in 11 years is not working hard. this is what's the problem with the unions. it's why we don't feel comfortable with them and why we're not endearing ourselves with them because they're unsustainable and they're destroying america. they're wussifying us. >> the interesting thing is here he is is a typing teacher who taught kids how to type on a machine that hardly anyone makes these days. however, we need to point out, we love teachers. we are crazy about them, you got to feel that a lot of teachers, though, are embarrassed by this guy because not only was he collecting $100,000 a year for last dozen years or so, but he was managing his $10 million real estate portfolio and he was a lawyer on the side.

>> and he's about to take -- get paid 100 days of unpaid sick leave. you sound pretty sick to me. why was he even removed from the class? he was making lewd comments to the high school girls and check out their rear ends. you know what, a 6-year-old boy can be suspended in this country for hugging a 6-year-old girl because it's sexual harassment. but a high school teacher because of the union rules can actually lear at girls' butts and get 11 year paid vacation. sign me up, i want that job and you said the most important thing, steve. this -- you said the most important thing, the irony of ironies was that the guy was a typing teacher. he was paid for 11 years as a teacher not to teach a class. using a machine they don't even make anymore! so he's being paid to teach people things they can't use if they wanted to. hold the presses, show everything, jesus is coming. obviously it's the end of the

not she had come out of rehab and then gone on to prescription drugs or if this was part of the whole systemic life she was living. >> even though she was out of money, she had four bodyguards standing outside her door for an hour and there was no noise coming out of the bathroom, obviously and they just stood there. it was her hairdresser, tiffany something or other that got in there and said listen, i'm really concerned because she shouldn't be in the bathroom for an hour and then they open up the door and there's her body. >> it was the bodyguard then who grabbed her and tried to perform cpr. it's interesting last night on "dateline" the guy that took these pictures said when he took them, she did not appear to be out of control. like she was strung out on drugs or anything like that. she was doing a set. she also did this interview with a guy that did her make-up that night and said, you know, when he saw her at the beginning of the evening, she was absolutely straight as an arrow, having a good time. he didn't know what happened to her. >> we'll continue to discuss

america, the liberal blog dedicated to destroying fox news. our next guest sat down with former and current media matters employees and discovered some unsettling facts about the web site's leaders and their connections to the white house and the mainstream media. joining us right now is fox news contributor and the writer of that report "the daily caller's" tucker carlson. good morning. >> good morning. >> why is media matters out to destroy fox news and some others? >> well, for two reasons. first, for ideological reasons. media matters is a left wing organization, wants to see a left wing monopoly on media. he could, its donors give a lot of money in order to hit fox. we've got a week-long series going on. we have internal memos that we're going to be releasing later in the week that put a little finer point on this but the bottom line is media matters has decided it can make the most money by attacking fox and has. >> keep in mind, folks, this is a tax exempt organization. and let's talk a little bit

about what they're doing. in your report today, you say that media matters, it does appear coordinates with the white house. that's -- that's big. >> yes. it is big and it's proved. in june of 2010, david brock, the founder and head of media matters went to the white house and met with valerie jarrett, perhaps the president's closest advisor. anita dunne, the former white house communications director. since then, the media matters organization has had a weekly conference call with the white house. there's also a weekly meeting of progressive groups that is in some sense orchestrated by the white house. almost always a white house representative at that meeting and if you follow statements by media matters, they mirror statements by the white house about fox, for instance, and vice versa. there's no question there's close coordinations. >> ok. also, there seems to be close coordination with the mainstream media and what you say is media matters which i think is going to spend $20 million this year

trying to influence media, apparently whatever media matters gives a couple of mainstream media outlets, they print it! greg sergeant you say at the "washington post," ben smith when he was at politico and msnbc, media matters is right in their primetime. >> that's a verbatim quote from a media matters staffer. we pretty much write their primetime. we call phil griffin, the head of msnbc, he takes our call. we knew there was coordination between media matters and a lot of news organizations. we were shocked by the degree of that coordination. you got to say, whatever else you say about the group, media matters has been awfully effective in getting its message out. there are a lot of liberal reporters out there. a lot of willing hands, eager to do the bidding of media matters it turns out. >> meanwhile, the guy at the top, david brock who makes a lot of money doing this, you describe him as viciously mean, unstable. you talk about mental illness.

this guy, he's paranoid. he's got a couple of bodyguards with him all the time because he's positive that he is the target of an assassination attempt. >> yes. that there are right-wing, unseen right-wing assassins lurking in the shadows trying to knock him off. we open the story with a scene where he's smoking a cigarette on the roof of his building in downtown washington, a very safe place and his two bodyguards rush up and whisk him downstairs for fear of snipers. his personal assistant carried a handgun to various events including in washington, d.c. where that's completely illegal. he carried a concealed glock with no permit because david brock needed the protection in the view of david brock so yes, we have many people who work for david brock telling us that the atmosphere there is paranoid. and i don't think that's too strong of a word. >> right. and i understand according to your report, media matters at america employee learned about the gun and was fired because they -- hey, he can't be carrying around a gun in d.c.

also, let's talk a little bit about your sources. people are going to say oh, you know, he's probably making that stuff up. you say your sources are people who currently work at media matters. >> if you read the piece, you get the sense and it's accurate that we talked to an awful lot of people in and around media matters who have a lot of details about how that organization runs. aalmost all of them didn't want to give us their names because frankly a lot of them are still committed progressives and they're still left wingers and they still believe in the cause but they're very, very concerned about the leadership of david brock. that's what this came down to. david brock, it turns out, has a lot of people who disagree with the way he's running that organization who really are concerned about his stewardship of it and that's why they spoke to us. >> why are -- ok, so you got sources inside and people who have left media matters. for the people inside media matters, do they still believe in the mission? >> they do. i mean, i actually spoke to someone last night who said look, you know, we've made our

of us who have small kids have seen this book. what was wrong with it? >> well, it really -- it was a story about sharing. but like so many other americans, you know, in the past few years, really had started to look at what was happening. i always have been conservative but i realized at that point in time that even my own thinking has started to shift. and i thought this isn't -- this isn't how i want my children to grow up to think that taking from somebody else is sharing. sharing comes from kindness and so i thought, you know, i am -- i'm going to start writing and i looked around and i noticed that we really don't have a lot of -- we don't have a lot of conservative children authors so i thought this is, you know, this is something that we need out there. >> so you decided to become one even though you were a clinical psychologist so you come up with a book "patriot & friends." i love how your main character

is a peacock. your last name is peacock which has not always been advantageous. >> that's right. >> what can we learn about patriot the peacock in your book? >> patriot is, well, he's a patriot. he loves raising the flag every morning and he loves saying the pledge of allegiance. and the important thing, though, is he's living on a farm with -- he's one of five animals and they're all very unique. they have unique personalities and characteristics. and interests but they share spontaneously. it's something they do out of kindness and they are getting along harmoniously on the farm until one day the pig who is a likable character but very gullible comes along and he's fishing and wiley fox comes along and tells him, you know, it's really not very fair. all you have is this wrinkly pink skin and look at patriot over here who has all these beautiful feathers and so he --

muddles thinks about it and realizing he's -- well, he doesn't realize, he's actually feeling very jealous and envious. and starts asking patriot for his feathers. >> eventually what happens in the book is the peacock gives away all of his feathers. >> all but one. >> so your main point in this book ironically is class warfare and that's something we've heard a lot about in the last year. >> yes. >> were you prophetic in the sense this is something we were going to be discussing? >> absolutely. i have to be honest, it was absolutely intended to be written for that reason. and it is a children's book. it's very much written for children ages 4 and up but i say 4 and up instead of 4 to 8 because there's a message for adults as well. and the kids get it at the kid level but there's a lot of other things in the story that are -- that parents will get or educators will get that in the end, they -- well, i shouldn't say in the end. in the middle of the story, they really end up fighting. they end up fighting and they can't decide what is fair.

doing so well. it was a tough relationship. >> it's hard to imagine that relationship, anyone thinking that he was not a bad influence on her. >> well, she was a different person after the marriage. i mean, i knew her before. i knew her after and she was a terrific person. and i've known him. he's a very talented guy actually but that was not a relationship that worked for her. i can tell you that. it was not a good relationship for her. >> i know we don't have the autopsy results back yet. it sounds like she did drown. we don't know what caused her to drown. she may have fainted. she may have been under the influence of something. what's the moral of her story? >> well, i think we can get back to relationship. you know, relationship is very important. if you have the right person in your life, you can do really well and if you have the wrong person in your life, it's not a good situation and, you know, i knew whitney before the fact. she worked for me many nights and she was fantastic and her voice, as you know, changed very drastically over the last number of years. people say drugs or smoking or

something but whatever it was, it was a big difference. her voice was magic prior to the marriage, you know, in the earlier years. her voice was as good as i've ever heard anybody and in the latter years, it was just different. there was -- you know, some people say it was smoking because smoking supposedly is a curse and whitney smoked a lot. so, you know, you don't know what to blame for the voice change but when she was -- when she was great which was at the beginning and really previous to the marriage, i thought really when they did a reality show, that was so unlike whitney to be doing that. >> i know. >> he wanted to do it and she didn't want to do it. and i guess she got forced into it and it turned out to be like a disaster. people didn't watch. it was really terrible. >> sum it up as sad all the way around. >> that's not for a star, the kind of show that fails. it was not a good situation. >> let's move on to politics this morning because sarah palin spoke at the cpac conference over the weekend and she made it clear that she is not convinced about mitt romney. the guy you've endorsed. listen to this.

> >> i am not convinced and i don't think the majority of voters are convinced. that's why you don't see romney get over that hump. he's still in the 30th percentile mark when it comes to approval and primary wins and caucus wins. he still hasn't risen above that yet because we are not convinced. >> you're convinced, donald trump, right? >> i am convinced. i think he's an excellent guy and an excellent candidate and frankly, i think she is a fantastic woman. but if you look at that run on a little bit further, you would have also heard her say she's not convinced about anybody at this moment. so, you know, not just mitt, it was really anybody and i think she wants to see it go on. i think she thinks it's a good process. and i understand exactly what she's saying. it is probably a good process. it's certainly a vetting process. these guys are suffering. every one of them are suffering. >> summarize if you would, sir, the state of the race right now. you see sarah palin at cpac.

mitt romney won the straw poll at cpac and won the maine caucuses over the weekend. >> it's certainly not a race that's over. sarah is right in that respect. it's not a race that's over and surprising things happen. you have a senator that lost to the senate by a record margin and, you know, he's like doing well right now. it looks like -- like newt is not doing so well at all. ron paul is the same old story, you know, just it's not going to happen. but the whole thing is crazy. and i guess the beneficiary is obama. i guess. but in mean time, we're talking about this race. if the race were over, we'd have nothing to talk about. >> what do you make of mitt romney saying the word conservative so many times in his speech? and then at one point, he said he was severely conservative. is that enough? i mean, what else? if you were advising him, how would you advise him to try to coalesce the republican party mainly the conservative sect of the republican party to come to his side? >> well, he's trying in his way

to get the word out. i mean, he is conservative. i've known him for a long time and he is a conservative person. he is a conservative person in terms of his views. but it's not getting across the way it should be and other people are coming up that probably shouldn't be but you have to give them a lot of credit because, you know, in the case of santorum, he's come from nothing and now he's doing much better so we'll have to see what happens. i think it's going to be a long process. and it could even go to the convention which is shocking. >> i want to get you on the economy. people are under the impression the economy is turning around. are you? >> well, i think certain things are turning around but the word is it's going to turn around a little bit more and then it's going to get worse. and i'm sort of a believer in that. i think when interest rates start going up and lots of other things start happening, it could very well get worse. it's a pretty scary time. we have a very, very fragile economy. this is not the right time to raise taxes, believe me. >> and "celebrity apprentice" started yesterday, right? >> no, it starts next sunday night. >> next sunday. >> i have a prediction, adam

>> catholic church blasting president obama's modification for the contraception mandate for religious employees, i should say. they say it still forces them to violate their conscious but yesterday, the white house chief of staff jack lew defended the change. >> i think this concern is one that people can disagree on the margins about but we have addressed the core issue, no

institution that has -- a nonprofit institution that has religious principles that we violated has to pay for or directly offer these services but women can access to the kinds of care they're entitled to. we think that's the right approach. >> and insurance companies will pick up the tab according to their plan. now attorney generals from 12 states have sent a letter to timothy geithner and kathy sabelius saying they've had it, they're not going to abide by it and they're not going to deal with it. we're joined by one of the co-authors of that letter, south carolina attorney general. why wasn't it the solution you're looking for? >> thaurz a number of reasons the first of which many of these catholic colleges, baptist hospitals, other faith-based entities are self-insurers. they're so big, they don't use insurance companies. they might use an insurance company to process or administer the claims but they themselves pay for the services so this alleged compromise or accommodation is a red herring. it doesn't exist. they actually still provide the

services they find unconscionable. >> they're asking insurance companies who they say will be able to pick this up for people who want contraceptive devices, you pick it up for free of charge. how does that work out and map that out? >> what i said the other night is the obama administration should have a lesson in economics 101 because any d student in economics can tell you there are no free lunches. when you mandate that an insurance company give away a free product or anybody give away a free product, in other words if i were to tell mcdonald's you have to give people in the street free hamburgers they're going to raise the price and the cost of how they do that. they're going to have to compensate for that. the same is true for the insurance companies. so nothing is actually free. and the actual entities, the faith-based entities, colleges, etc., will ultimately bear the cost of the very services that the administration claims they don't have to pay for. >> alan, these top down mandates are just the beginning. that's what obamacare is going

>> steve: all right. i understand that when she was just a young girl, her mom, who you were producing, said you know what? let's use my daughter. she's just 14, but really good. you probably thought, oh, the mom is very proud, but as it turns out, this kid could sing. >> that's right. actually what happened was i was producing an album with cissy and the night before a background session, one of the background singers canceled. so i asked cissy who she wanted to get and she said, i'm going to bring my daughter in. i said, we used to call whitney nippy. that was her nickname. and she was 14 years old. i said, are you sure you want to bring in a 14-year-old? she said, don't worry about it. so nippy showed up to the studio in her school uniform and she was very, very quiet. and got up and i couldn't

believe my ear when is she opened her mouth. it was beyond belief. >> gretchen: so you ended up producing her very first album, which was "life's a party." right? >> it was actually my album. it was the michael zager band. i had come off a very big hilt. i asked cissy if nippy could sing a lead vocal on my album and background vocals and she said if whitney wanted to do it, it was okay with her. so i asked nippy and she said sure. and "life a party" at 14 years old became her first solo vocal performance on record. >> brian: michael, in the big picture, you saw the very beginning. how frustrated were you when the ensuing from 1992 to 2007 that maybe no one could reach her? >> well, actually it was quite

distressing. i'm in constant contact with her mother. i have been throughout the years. but we never really have discussed anything concerning whitney's problems. i would just say to cissy, has nippy and -- how is nippy and she would respond, fine. >> steve: you were there at the very beginning and it's nice you zeger, thank you, sir.es of >> you're welcome. >> gretchen: here is what we know so far now about her death over the weekend. she did die in the bathtub in the hotel as we've been sharing with you. the autopsy said she actually drowned, that there was water in her lungs. but the toxicology reports will not come back for six to eight weeks. that could be the real answer. >> brian: we know her daughter is having anxiety problems. she was sent to the hospital two times. she's out now. and her ex-husband, bobby brown,

after performing the night of her death, has canceled the rest of his tour. >> steve: whitney houston's body will be flown back to newark later today. her cousin, deion warwick, will accompany the body back to new jersey. >> brian: the headlines now. >> gretchen: we began with the fox news alert for you this morning. israeli officials around the world on high alert now. here is the reason why. new pictures out of india where an explosion ripped through an israeli diplomat's car on the streets of new delhi. this is a few feet away from the israeli embassy. the driver and diplomat's wife were injured. israeli officials say there was also another attempted attack on a diplomat's car in georgia. israeli security sources tell fox news suspicious packages were found in israeli embassies in bus sell and amsterdam. greece this morning. rioters in athens hurling fire bombs at police. you can see one cop actually catching on fire. a total of 80,000 protesters

♪ rolling in the deep ♪ you had my heart and soul in your hands ♪ ♪ . >> gretchen: that's adele. she went six for six. her awards included three of the biggest, record, album, and song of the year. those are your headlines this morning. >> brian: let's bring in dana perino. former white house press secretary, star of "the five." first off, the big news, the contraceptive mandate, how, in your estimation did the president go to wrong on this? >> well, i think we'll probably find out as time goes on what actually happened, but in some of the journalistic investigation into this, there was different opinions. i think that's one good thing, that you can look at this white house and know there's a variety of opinions. president obama listened to all of them and made a decision that he was going to go forward with this mandate that the hhs secretary, health and human services secretary, would put out a ruling saying that religious organizations don't have an option.

they would have to be -- they would be compelled to provide could notsive care for free to employees even though that never happened in our country before and it violate what had they called our conscience clause. it was then rolled out very poorly. then the execution and management of the rollout made things even worse. they realized that they're getting swamped politically. they start to walk it back. but instead, it was like when you rub a spot on a wall and make it worse, that seems to be what's happened. >> steve: how about jack lew yesterday when he was talking to chris wallace said it's finished. and chris wallace said, there is not going to be no negotiation? this is it. the bishops of the united states of america, catholic bishops are not going to stand for this. >> they're not. this is not just the catholics. they've been very smart on the religious liberty side of things, to say this is not about contraception. this is about a constitutional right and they have aligned with the lutherans and some of the people in the jewish community. >> brian: baptists. >> to say, we wouldn't want this to happen to us and we're not

going to allow it to happen to them and this crossed a line. what's really interesting is the "new york times" on saturday morning after the president made his walk back announcement, it said, president compromises. the "wall street journal" headline says, president retreats. but neither is true because -- >> steve: it's the same thing. >> the bishops took time to read it, digest it and friday night, they issued a stinging letter saying, this absolutely doesn't cut it. >> gretchen: the other thing, to me, is that there is a second part to this equation of the story which is can a president of the united states tell insurance companies what they must provide for free? >> we're going to find out. >> steve: welcome to obamacare. >> remember when nancy pelosi said we'll have to pass the bill to find out what's in it? >> gretchen: doesn't this bring it right up to the forefront before the election? >> yep. bill crystal said, this could reinvigorate the tea party, which is probably not something that the chicago campaign would want. >> brian: big rush to get this across. we don't understand why. but no rush did to get a bush

jet out. last year he was embarrassed, didn't get one vote in the (jack lew -- chris wallace brought him to the statement that the president is releasing his budget. does it bother you the senate has not released theirs? listen. >> you can't pass a budget in the senate of the united states without 60 votes and you can't get 60 votes without bipartisan support. so unless republicans are willing to work with democrats in the senate, harry reid is not going to be able to get a budget passed. >> that would be great if it were true. he is the current chief of staff, but he's the former director of the office of management and budget. you don't need 60 votes to pass a budget. you need 50. and it's not he said it there where it would have been considered a slip of the tongue. he said it at two other places. so this was a calculated decision to use this statement to try to show that there is a do nothing congress, blame the republicans. but the problem is, they chip away at their credibility every week because it's so easily proven false. jake tapper within two hours

said, that's not true. the reason he knows that, he covered capitol hill for a long time. >> gretchen: a big stack of papers. >> this is a policy statement. when the president puts out a budget, this is him saying these are my priorities. this is what i recommend. going forward as well, if a budget were to pass, which even when they had the democrats in power, when president obama had the majorities in the house and senate, they didn't even pass a budget then. >> gretchen: as we look at a $15 trillion deficit -- >> i thought they didn't print it anymore. >> gretchen: last year it got voted down 97-zip. if you had to be a betting person what, would be the vote on this budget? >> i don't think that harry reid will ever bring it up. but senator mitch mcconnell, says i'm gog bring it up. i'm going to make you vote on it. that's what happened with the keystone pipeline. you can call us do nothing congress if you want, but if we call for the vote, then it's your problem and you'll have to explain why you're against

here, priests and nuns and bishops and cardinals and your flock, but we're going to happened this stuff out anyway. so you don't have to have it on your conscience. there is something called being a conscience objector with regard to war. a lot of priests and nuns say in this country, we are conscience objectors in the war on baby, on the unborn and say don't make us violate our religion and say, you can announce that accommodation, a compromise, call it what you want, it's a violation of the constitution that not only hurts catholics, but people of all faiths. >> steve: sure. so if you work for a catholic hospital or a college, they buy you, the catholic church, buys you insurance. so with a wink and a nod, the church isn't going to pay for it, but your insurance company will pay for it. but really the church is providing the coverage for contraception. >> and the law is clear. internal church governance is

you say? >> i think that's true. i think you have to look at a man's record or woman's record when they're running for office. but i also think you have to look at what they campaign on because frankly, the tea party's job is to hold them to it in the end. in 2013, whoever is president, our job is going to be to look back what, did they say on the campaign trail and make sure they live up to them things. >> gretchen: sarah palin had this so take about it. >> -- to say about it. >> i am not convinced and i don't think that the majority of gop and independent voters are convinced and that is why you don't see romney get over that hump. he's still in the 30% mark when it comes to approval and primary wins and caucus wins. he still hasn't risen above that yet because we are not convinced. >> gretchen: does she have a point? >> she does have a point. i don't think anybody is convinced. i don't think anybody is looking tore convinced. i think people are listening. they're going to take stock of this. they're going to keep it in the back of their mind when they go into the polls and again, they're going to hold people accountable after they're

elected. >> gretchen: you actually believe this sort of give and take and ebb and flow with the republican candidates going up and down is a healthy thing. why? >> because i think it's making the candidates better. i think you see that in the debates. you see it on the campaign trail. history shows us. 2008, obama and clinton were still going at it in june. it was a down and dirty campaign. i can tell it worked because obama is president and clinton is the most popular politician on earth right now. >> gretchen: i got to get your thoughts on this contraception mandate in obamacare. the so-called accommodation that was made on friday where now insurance company also have to provide contraception free. for the tea party, is this a bigger issue than contraception? >> it is one of the fundamental tenets of the tea party is constitutional limited government. they're intruding on the rights to religious freedom. i think it's a big deal. i haven't seen anybody in the tea party movement that doesn't think it's a big deal. >> gretchen: do you think
