just did the unthinkable to this 86-year-old war veteran. >> and get in and that was it. and grabbed my keys and in the car. he had hit me. >> carjacked and injured and all caught on tape. >> and act of valor. have you seen it it? real u.s. navy seals on the big screen and it's big at the box office this weekend. >> and gonna crisis escalating in afghanistan. over the burning of some copies of the muslim holly book. we have seen n.a.t.o. forces targeted in the past few days as protests in that country intensifies, more on that story in a moment. first, we're learning the identity of one of the high ranking military advisors murdered at the defense minister. air force lieutenant colonel,

44 years old from kentucky. i spoke with the special-ops command. he was in fact one of two military advisors shot in the head at the his officer yesterday in a heavily guarded building. an interior ministry spokesperson saying it was an afghan man who worked as a driver for employees on the same floor as those advisors. and police reportedly still searching for that shooter he. we hold you after the murders, n.a.t.o. pulled out all international advisors from afghan ministry. when asked about that move earlier today, afghan president karzai said it was an understandable step. he issued a televised address to his nation today, calling for a return to calm. all of this connected to the burning of copies of the koran at bagram air base last week. after days of rage, now, a total of four u.s. troops have been killed, even though both n.a.t.o. and president obama have apologized for the book burning, saying it was accidental.

>> hours ago demonstrators hurled grenades at a u.s. base in northern afghanistan and now we know, seven n.a.t.o. troops were injured. steve centanni is live with the news in washington tonight. steve, what can you tell us about the latest attack? >> well, harris, this latest attack resulted from a protest over the koran burning that began peacefully and suddenly grew violent. the protesters began clashing with police in the province in the north of the country when grenades were launched at a u.s. base. ambassador to afghanistan said that the u.n. will hold steading in the afghan mission and he has support on capitol hill. >> again, these are terrible tragedies and very worthy of the condemnation that they received. but this is not the time to decide that we're done here. we've got to redouble our efforts. we've got to create a situation in which al-qaeda is not coming back. >> and this episode with the koran burning inspect terrible

[applause] >> well, i'm hoping that you'll do the same. >> now, mitt romney today early portion of the day he spent down in daytona, florida, the daytona 500 hoping to get in front of a bunch of cameras to make a relationship with the folks that are republican, nascar fans, a lot of them out there. but unfortunately the the race got rained out before he could actually see any driving, the race postponed until tomorrow and the campaign tactic, unfortunately, that's a washout. big stakes for romney, and this is his home state. if he doesn't win here, his campaign state it would be a blow. >> including newt gingrich, one of the other contenders said when you don't win what is considered to be romney's home state, his dad was governor three terms there, it could be problematic and seems like ron paul and gingrich may be looking past michigan and

the victims' families say they were fighting over a boy. and witnesses say the fight was not that seriously or that violent. and later the child felt ill, taken to the hospital where she had emergency surgery and died. our molly line is here with me. >> reporter: this little girl has lost her life and compounding the tragedy, there's mystery involved here. the fight happened on friday in an alleyway near willard elementary where the 11-year-old girl went to school. according to the long beach police department the fight with a classmate was pre-planned and roughly seven onlookers went to watch the after school battle. >> we believe the fight lasted about one minute, did not involve any weapons and we believe nobody was knocked to the ground. once the fight was over, both girls left the location, and went their separate ways. >> the 11-year-old then went to an after school program where she told supervisors she wasn't feeling well. the family went to get her and went to the hospital.

and pronounced dead shortly before nine o'clock that night. the cause of death has yet to be determined. it's hard to understand how it happened. and if you're like me thinking about your own children, perhaps your daughter or granddaughter and you get a sense how precious life really is. for the family involved, this is tragic beyond words. and for the city, it's a future for all of us. >> detectives have interviewed the classmate involved in the fight and the witnesses and the police have not received any information on the girl being bullied and no case for arrest has been made. >> it's interesting to hear, that other witnesses said it wasn't particularly violent. what's the next in the investigation. >> lasting less than a minute they say the fight was. the next step, they're trying to talk to people if there were events leading up to the fight and unraffles into the mystery and waiting to find

out what the the cause of death was. >> molly line, thank you very much. an appalling story now in detroit. an 86-year-old military veteran beaten and carjacked this broad daylight. he had just finished pumping gas, a man sneaked up behind and hit hit and took off with his car. to make it worse, plenty of people behind, and no one tried to help him. he was crawling on the ground and no one was near him. and he had a broken leg. >> i'm crawling and trying to get the station-- and walking right by me and going into the station there. >> and if i'd crawled, i'm on the ground, i would have stopped myself. >> harris: one final detail, it took police so long and emergency responders so long to arrive at the scene, brantley asked one of the customers to take him home. i mentioned his leg was broken, he needed to go to the hospital. the carjacker still out there. well, we told, but this last

jerusalem. >> the most interesting thing that happened inside that courtroom was what we didn't see. none of the 16 americans accused by the egyptian government showed up to answer the charges. and here is the latest video from cairo, a number of egyptians rounded up and charged with the same crime, normally operating an organization without a license and fueled unrest and went in and asked by the judge, pleaded not guilty or until they r were released. and so in the courtroom wanted held and charged with espionage. of the 16 americans none of them showed up. and left egypt a while back and if the-- the united states has harshly protested the charges against these people who were basically pro democracy organizers and the larger issue is the rift between the

agreement for businesses affected by the deep water horizon accident and oil spill. there can be he no assurance that these discussions will lead to a settlement. and keep in mind, b p's got a huge team of lawyers out here, just preparing for the trial and a huge team of attorneys down here simply working on the settlement talks, these talks have been going on for several months, so far, they have failed to reach a settlement and however, the judge, faces some judicial wisdom here to give them one more week, so it really does indicate at that perhaps, a settlement is closer than it's ever been. >> yeah, so, a lot of people across the country following this, may be wondering, where are we in all of this? this is strictly the civil side, right? not the possible criminal case that could be coming? >> right, justice department still reviewing possible criminal case against bp, as well as trans ocean,

halliburton and anadarko and also, this is involving about 110,000 plaintiffs. these are fishermen, shrimpers, oystermen, hotel and tourism people from all around the gulf of mexico, the attorneys general for indiana, as well as alabama involved in this lawsuit and as is the federal government, the two key points here are the fines and damages that will be leveled and no one has any doubt that it will be in the billions, but the big question is whether bp exercised gross negligence, if they did, that could increase their potential penalties by four fold up to 17 billion dollars. >> oh, the story coming together, late on this sunday evening and appreciate phil keating, you looking into it for us. thank you very much. douglas kennedy, son of robert f. kennedy, and reporter, denying changes he put his
