describe it. i can't even -- like there's nothing. like i was literally, like, 20 feet away, not even, and i saw himo i was in shock. i had nothing to say. >> what did you do? >> he pulled a gun out, just started shooting kids, and i saw the one drop, and i ran. >> reporter: parents say the school practiced annual lockdowns. of course, the sad legacy from the columbine massacre in 1999. this morning, teachers started yelling lockdown, kids at first thought it was a drill, until they heard the gunfire. they were later released after the suspect was caught. there will be a prayer vigil tomorrow night. because of this, there's a -- because of this, a crushingly sad and tragic day at a school shooting in our country. jenna: terrifying descriptions there. we'll continue to follow this throughout the day. eric, thank you. jon: republican presidential candidate rick santorum's
9:34 am
social views getting a lot of attention in the mainstream media, santorum calling for religion to have a bigger role in the public square, saying freedom of religion has been turned on its head, the candidate making mention of the media's focus a short while ago in michigan. >> >> [inaudible] >> don't talk about freedom. i don't know jon let's talk about it with jim pinkerton for the american conservative magazine, alan coomes of the alan coomes show, the radio program. jim, santorum was on television over the weekend on "meet the press" and once again defending himself over accusations that he's muddying politics with his religious views. >> right. well, i can sum up the santorum agenda like this. this is today's "wall street journal," it's an op-ed by rick santorum, entitled "my economic freedom agenda"
9:35 am
which is all about tax and spending and the keystone pipeline and jobs and so on, and this is a compilation by the media research center of the ten most outrageous antisantorum attacks in their view. all ten of these attacks from the mainstream media are about abortion, god, religion, and so on. so you just see where the media are when it comes to santorum. what they want to do is attack him on his religious views and ignore his economic views which are much more important in his mind to his campaign. that's what he was campaigning on in michigan today. jon: alan, we have a sad reminder that, you know, there is a place for religion in public life, just this morning. i mean, the school's commissioner of a public school in ohio announces there's going to be a prayer vigil and asks people to keep the victims of that school shooting in their prayers. >> nobody is criticizing that. but to say -- >> jon: but to say that, i don't know, a president or a potential president shouldn't be outspoken about
9:36 am
his religious views? >> it's a matter of what your point is. you can't blame the media for focusing on his social and religious views when that is what he is talking about. he gave two speeches over the weekend where he said john f. kennedy's speech made him want to throw u he's the one who's talking about how public education or higher education is a matter of snobbery. these are the things he said. he said one of the things i will talk about that no presidential candidate has talked about before, the dangers of contraception in this country. those are his words. he wants this to be his agenda. when he's on a show he has the ability to say well, here's what i want to talk about. he doesn't do that. this is what he is passionate about, this is what he is talking about. sure, he's got an economic plan, okay, so the "wall street journal," but these are the things he wants to talk about and has been talking about on the stump. you can't blame the media for that. jon: what about jim's point that the "wall street journal" editorial piece is about jobs and media and the media talk about religion.
9:37 am
>> you're talking about one website, media matters, that talks about that. the "wall street journal," sure it's got an economic platform but in the speeches over the weekend in michigan, this is what he chose to focus on. when he says i'm the only candidate that's going to talk about this contraception issue, that's because he chooses to talk about this. this isn't the media making it up this, is the very thing he chooses to talk about. jon: jim, is the fact that the media get uncomfortable when a presidential candidate brings up religious principles? >> well, they get uncomfortable when they bring up religious principles that go in a conservative direction. if you said my religion tells me i'm for gay rights or what knows what, then the media are for it. if religion tells us to be against partial birth abortion, then the media kill you. it's one study i saw that 97 percent of reporters are prochoice, 97 percent. that tells ul the perspective they bring to the abortion issue. listen, what alan said is illustrative of the problem. first of all santorum didn't give a speech in which he
9:38 am
talked about john f. kennedy's fame -- famous address in 1960. >> no, he gave this speech over the weekend. this is what he wants to talk about, jim! >> on the snobbery thing, you misstated -- obama didn't say education was -- you said obama. >> that's right. how snobbish it is to want and advocate for higher cation, something he advocated for. if you go to his website, 2006 when he ran for senate he ran for higher education of all. he's saying the opposite when he advocated the last time he ran for public office. >> rick santorum is a college graduate. he's not going nence education. what he said is it's snobbish to think that -- >> obama didn't say 100 percent should go to college. that's not what the president said. that's misreporting if that's what you are saying he said. he's advocating that people should have the opportunity to go, the same as rick santorum said when he ran for the senate.
9:39 am
jon: this is an issue that's going to continue to dominate the headlines and we'll see how rick santorum does in the michigan primary but he certainly has attracted a lot of attention for his views. alan, jim, thank you both. >> thank you. jenna: the fbi is taking a tough new stand on white collar crime, using michael douglas in his oscar winning role as gordon gecko on wall street to warn the public to do the right thing and report insider trading and other crimes to the fed. rick leventhal is live from wall street with more on this. hi rick. >> reporter: hey jenna. it's not a coincidence that on the morning after the academy awards the fbi is releasing that tsa featuring michael douglas, 2-time oscar winner. the message of this ad is simple. it's that insider trading hurts all of us, and in some cases robs consumers of confidence in financial markets. you can watch here: >> hell oarks i'm michael douglas. in the movie '"wall street" i play gordon gecko, a

workers in, so the situation more desperate even as president assad continues what the west is now saying is a facade in attempt at reforms. jenna: a lot of strong words about this, dominic, as we take a look at amateur video from syria. you had the prime minister of russia, vladimir putin, writing effectively an op-ed piece warning the united states and any western nations from getting involved in syria, it was a pretty scathing piece. at the same time we have secretary of state hillary clinton also saying things to the international community, that some are also saying are controversial. give us an idea of what's happening here. >> reporter: yes. secretary of state hillary clinton exploded quite spectacularly in other comments, pointed at china and russia, calling them des peck -- despicable for the veto of a united nations security council resolution that could have helped reduce some of the violence, the chinese absolutely fumeing with that. they do not like to be criticized in public.
9:54 am
they said hillary clinton's behavior is completely and utterly unacceptable and that's going to cause a deep rift in that relationship which of course is crucial to both the american diplomacy and the american economy. russian president -- prime minister vlad mi putin also harshly warning the west do not get militarily involved in syria, it will have regionwide if not international repercussions. ultimately, not coming out with any solution on how to end the violence in syria. jenna: and that's the headline. dominic, thank you very much jon: well, there's been a rare hold on one of america's favorite sporting events and nascar officials are hoping for clear skies tonight, after heavy rain forced race organizers to scrub yesterday's running of the daytona 500. that's the first time that's happened in the 54 year history of that race. so what can drivers and fans expect for tonight? let's check in with meteorologist janice dean in the fox extreme weather center.
