don't give back what we do for them. they continue this posture of producing just enough. many have argued, saudis are close to maximum production. i don't know what is true. the issue seems to be that opec has our number. you long argued, we should remind we have theirs. what do you mean by that? >> in terms of having our number. i will tell you they are ramping all the way to the bank. the opec nations is incredible. there has never been wealth generated like them generating it. we made it possible for them to live to be there. to literally be just there. for us to accept what they are doing to us is hard to believe. actually, neil, it's hard to believe. over the last three or four years, that is where we have found out how much we really have. we didn't know what kind of wealth we have under ground.

we have tremendous especially in terms of natural gas. the natural gas, we are the saudi arabia plus ten or times ten of natural gas. i don't understand why we're not doing more to take it out. >> neil: big primary night in michigan, argument seems to be, just talked to mitt romney a few minutes ago, he has got to win michigan. he acknowledges but if he doesn't, do you think he is in trouble? >> he a good man. he understands what china is doing to this country better than anybody else in terms of running. he has been very strong. you talk about opec, he gets the opec situation and will do something about it. it can happen well for this country. i hope he wins. if he doesn't win, it would definitely not be a good thing, not for the congress or the republican party.

i think he is going to win. >> neil: do you think it increases the likelihood of a brokered convention? >> it would prolong the race. i don't know about a brokered convention. i think he is going to do fine. people are really liking him and starting to like him a lot. i have a lot of friends that really weren't sure and now they are liking him a lot. they are very smart people. i have gotten to know him very well over the last few months and i think he would beat president obama. >> neil: what about rick santorum, governor romney was critical of santorum campaign robo call efforts that remind democrats there, to remind them to vote against romney because he was against the auto bailouts nevertheless, romney was arguing that supporting an administration, obama and

senator weren't hand in hand in this, they were complicit on this? >> i think most importantly the most important aspect of the question is the reason the democrats would vote for santorum and try to embarrass romney is they know they can beat santorum and they don't feel confident about beating romney. >> neil: so if santorum were to be the republican nominee, donald trump wouldn't support him? >> i don't want to comment on it. it's too early to think about it. i think mitt romney is going to be a great candidate and ultimately win and be a great president. >> neil: what do you think of these personal struggles. wife has two cadillacs and going to daytona and nascar, that sort of thing. it hits people, smacks some people as being very out of touch.

what about you? >> could he have done without it? probably. is it built up by the press? probably that is also. when you are campaigning and you make literally hundreds of statements an hour, one little thing like two cadillacs. >> neil: you are absolutely right. >> could he have said something differently, probably. >> neil: imagine if you could run, you could make a reference to one of your planes or jets, game over. >> i guess i. could you know what, again, i become a fan of mitt. i think he is a good man. i like him personally. i wish people could see him on a more personal level because he's got what it takes. he really has what it takes. >> neil: would you be his treasury-secretary? >> i don't think they want me for that. i would do necessary for this country. we are being laughed at all over the world.

the economy in the totality but it is a sign. there are other things, however, that are really, really on the horizon. that is the price of gasoline. unless we do something, when i say we i mean collectively, not to talk about it but to show that something can be done and to do something, people that are being hurt are not going to be affected to the see the dow rise -- what does that mean to them? we need to find answers. >> neil: in your state they have been ticking rising, highest in the nation. this is state that a lot of people were going barack obama's way. republican critics say a lot of this in the lap of president because he is not increasing production here and very stubborn to do so when keystone

reason they feel that way, you and i would feel that way, too, if we were running against many of the people for the republican nomination. >> neil: eventually it will be on that nominee. >> precisely. if that nominee is mitt romney, i say romney will be the nominee i think democrats would love to see rick santorum be the nominee. they would love it. >> neil: so i think with this robo calling, santorum folks indirectly working with them trying to deliver michigan to santorum. >> i wouldn't accuse them. i would do nothing to discourage them. right on. you and i, you can't say it you have to be fair and unbiased and not expressing an opinion. there is no bay the american people would ever elect rick santorum. under no circumstances. >> neil: you don't know that. they used to saim say the same about you. >> they say hell would freeze over. [ laughter ] >> neil: you're right, they did say that. >> the difference is, i stand for something. i didn't run on labels. i didn't run on religion. i didn't run on being the most moderate or most liberal. >> neil: you ticked everybody off. >> yes. i ran on issues. i think what this campaign will come down to the issues and dow is good thing for the democrats. >> neil: very good man, governor. for both parties. good source of inspiration.

the most important voters in america. the independents, swing voters the people that go back and forth from election to election. you take a look at all the polling, mitt romney's numbers with independents are falling and measurably falling, 8, 9, 10 points, that is because the candidates are going at each other. instead of knowing where they stand, independents are learning what this is wrong with them. those republicans are going to have the challenge no matter who the nominee is. >> neil: the opponents, the media pounces the cadillac remarks? >> first off you have to take responsibility for what you say. secondly, you have to have a plan that demonstrates to them, you get what is happening out there. the last week, you can hear it in my voice. i've been in ohio, michigan, wisconsin, i'm heading down florida. all across these key states, voters want to know that not

only you mean what you say but you understand the concerns and fears and anxiety with rising gas prices, with the economy still very weak. they want to know that you get it. i'm not convinced these candidates are communicating that right now. >> neil: we get fixated in the moment. '92 race we competing, paul ripping bill clinton and it got pretty nasty. clinton emerged. he did okay. got elected and re-elected. i guess when races do get nasty. any time you have two more candidates in the room but they settle it and move on. >> i look at obama/clinton, while the two of them really went at it. there was a different approach to the two of them. they would repeatedly talk about how much they respected each other.

to john roberts in phoenix. >>. >> reporter: good afternoon, to you, neil. lighter than expected turnout and people have been dribbling in and county recorders say the return of the early ballots, popular in arizona has been less than expected. 300,000 have been returned and they thought greater than that. who does it it help and who does it hurt? it could potentially hurt mitt romney. he's seen as the favorite here and win arizona in a walk that could cause a lot of people stay home or not return the ballots, but would take a lot of people based on the numbers to not vote for mitt romney to lose this thing. think about the issues here in arizona, what comes to mind, immigration, and arizona is always in the news for immigration going to the supreme court to argue for their law and april 25th. i talked with arizona governor jan brewer who endorsed mitt romney, earlier today she told me, neil, it goes far beyond immigration when it comes to the issues on voter's minds. >> it's an important issue to arizona and an important issue to america.
