this is a fox news alert, the death toll rises in indiana, kentucky and ohio and we receive updates from local authorities. some of the worst damage is in southern indiana. the violent weather there wiping one town off the map and tearing the roof off a high school. kentucky state government says kentucky national guard troops have been deployed. this just days after a huge storm triggered dozens of tornadoes in illinois, and kansas. joining us live on the phone is buddy rogers from kentucky emergency management.

buddy, thank you for coming on with us tonight. we're hearing that people have been killed there. what can you tell us? >> that is correct. we have 12 confirmed deaths in kentucky related to today's storm. and that number may rise during the night. we've got reports of over 200 injuries. and the conditions are those injuries. big concern are those still maybe entrapped and rescue workers are working in the dark. >> were people who are injured where are they now? and how are they finding shelter? >> we have several shelters open in the state. several shelters and those that have been released in press releases and posted on web sites. there are several local community shelters as well throughout the county.

we have had 13 tornadoes reported. through the national weather service office and spotters and there are several other reports of possible tornadoes that have to the yet been confirmed. those are confirmed by the national weather service. >> does it seem like more bad weather is going to be coming through? are your rescue teams able to search without too much on the earth itself? are things dicey out there? >> the weather is lingering and things have been in the far eastern part of the state. for the most part we're clear at this point. >> i'm sure they have relatives in the area, is there a number they can call or a web site they can go to check on their relatives and leave a message to call them

back? >> we're working with national guard to get that established. we know that there are difficulties in reaching these communities. and the state slefl having difficulties reaching into the communities because of the situation there and so towers and land lines are road debris is just blocking entrances into the communities. we're working with the red cross trying to get communications established and check points where they can leave messages and check on loved ones. that is something that we're working on now. >> what is your greatest concern now? >> just beyond going to the rescue efforts during the night. one thing that we often try to ask for assistance from the public with any event is that we know people are concerned

about their loved ones and friends and they may try to go to them but roads are unpassable in some of the towns and communities. so we're asking people just to wait and let the rescue workers go in there and respond and try their best to clear the scene and make it safer for those responders and for emergency operations to assist in the manner they need tox we ask you to avoid traveling impacted areas and the first thing in the morning we're going to be continuing with our damage assessments. i'm sure there will be search and rescue missions still ongoing in communities. so avoid traveling in the areas. unless it's necessary. let our emergency workers do their thing. >> good advice. what does it look like to you?

if you would describe what you're looking at on the ground or what is on the ground. what does it look like? >> this is just, you know looks like a typical powerful tornado field. images that i've seen coming in through the media is just wide spread damage and debris along the tree lines and broken trees and collect buildings. just a lot of rescue efforts going on out there. >> and you mention that had there are 12 deaths. is that accurate now? >> there are 12 confirmed deaths being reported. >> and then, in -- do they die because they were in homes? >> that i don't know. >> you don't know how they died?. >> no. >> okay. >> what are you looking to now? what is your greatest concern in next hour? >> well, right now we're still kind of trying to make communications into these impacted counties. we haven't established

communication was every agency in that county. some of the centers of government are knocked out of power and they don't have communications thachl is our biggest obstacle now. once we've made contact with them, we can find out what they needed to get resources to them as soon as possible. we do have national guard troops that are deployed. there are 255 troops of 15 and -- assisting some of the counties. and we've got these troops helping with storm-related damages. >> i want to thank you very much. buddy rothers you've got a lot of -- a lot head of you over the night z thank you very much for coming to us and talking about these storms, these tornadoes that are wreaking havoc across the mid west and southeast. thank you very much. >> you're quite welcome. >> once again,
