tuesday. is he more electable than mitt romney? >> i think it makes a difference what kind of republican you elect. any republican isn't good enough. when we elected george bush we had great expectations but we doubled the debt under george bush, doubled the size of education. we added a lot of environmental regulations. we didn't go quite the right way. ron paul has never volunteered to raise taxes, never voted for a budget that is unbalanced. he has consistent voting record to do it. >> rick santorum correct? >> yes. >> you are from pennsylvania? >> rick santorum didn't do well in the last pennsylvania elections. is he the most electable against barack obama? >> yes, he is. first i want to say each of the four candidates are good men.

each of the four candidates want what is best for this country. any one of them will do a better job than president obama. i think rick will do the best job out of four. i've known rick for 25 years. what you see is what you get. what he sticks to what he has to say. he is social conservative and fiscal conservative and more in line and more in step with hard working tax paying americans. i was a dedicate and we would go into crack houses and we -- district attorney and we would go into crack houses and we want people that we could trust. rick santorum is the guy i would take we to arrest a drug dealer. >> you have been congressman and chairman of an important house committee and you are newt gingrich man. why? >> it's important that we beat barack obama and out put the

romney. that is the challenge that romney is losing support from people like me. >> he has nine points among independents. we know much of it is because of the attacks but the fact he has dropped. how does he restore them? >> i think he has to bring this back to the big principles that are at play in this election. he is someone who firmly believes this is a country where hard work will be rewarded. it is a country where opportunity is unlimited. i think bringing it back to those big principles and the difference between what he stands for and what all of our candidates stand for versus barack obama with a smaller more accountable government that is going to be responsive to the people and fiscally responsible. i think bringing it back to those principles. people want to live in a country where when you work hard, you earn your success. the land where personal responsibility is what is

primary and not bigger government and where the government makes the decisions for you. i think those big picture principles that he believes in very firmly core of his beliefs is what he has to convey to people. >> i like speaker gingrich. my concern with him is his ethics record and whether we think whatever scandal occurred should not be in a court of public opinion. it should be part of the campaign. i'm worried about his campaign imploding on that if he is nominee. >> i don't think anybody has vedted any more than newt has. i'm not going to justify some of his ethical slips or personal slips as he has not justified them. i happen to be privileged at his first communion when he converted to catholicism. i believe that newt at this time has made a substantial change in his personal latest of seen it.

as i say, i it was privileged to be there. you don't make a decision like that lightly. he has not done so. he has been as honest he can with the american people he had lapses in the past. he asked for forgiveness from god. it's different. i think he has done that. he has been open about that. in terms of ethical lapses in congress, if you go back and look at that it doesn't hold up. it was an effort by democrats to embarrass the speaker of the house. they did not do it with what i believe moral integrity but newt has had to deal with that. >> do you feel they understand your challenges and concerns, yes or no? >> yes. >> do you think one of those people are going to defeat barack obama? >> yes. >> so you are pretty optimistic. i'm not sure if i would be. coming up next, see a couple of

states. those votes have gone to rick santorum. why is that? >> i don't know because my vote hasn't gone in that direction. i would say that when you are the object of $20 million worth of negative ads as newt was it's going to take some damage. unfortunately, it did. i have advised newt and many others have he ought to remain positive. that is how he shines. i don't think there is any doubt if you watch the debates, there is one person that has handled every issue that has been presented in several levels. he had a not only makes the surface argument and underlying principle argument. he can also go of after the president of the united states in that way. it's interesting to look at the ads but it bothers me like members of a family trying to distinguish themselves from one

in order to pass the budget, the law says the how passes the budget the senate passes a budget you compromise and pass a unified budget. house passed a budget to tackle the debt the senate didn't pass budget in 2010 and 2011 and now they say they will not pass one in 2012. if one of these two bodies doesn't act. nothing gets done. >> senator bennett, senator from colorado, is the senate responsible for why nothing is passing? >> i think washington is responsible for it. i think everybody here owns this. there is reason we have 9% approval rating is because we're not getting our job done. i represent colorado. what they want me to be able to come home and tell them we

materially addressed the problem. we're all in it together and it was bipartisan because they don't believe in either party's go it alone approach on this. people back here in washington have figured out every excuse for not getting it done. it's long past time for democrats and republicans to solve this problem. >> you've got the house and senate that can't cooperate. republicans and democrats can't cooperate. you took an independent position from the senator from oklahoma, you took a conservative position. what advice do you have for them about bringing people together can this get done? >> sure. what do you think is important is next election more important than our country? is the country more important than your next election or your party? the fact is as we lived the last 30 years off the kids that is coming off the next 30, that is immoral.

you had democrats and reopens coming together to tackle will the issue. nobody got to have it all their way hundred percent. they had to make tough compromises for the good of the country. i think that provided a framework. i don't necessarily agree with every specific recommendation but the framework that plan set out was a balanced approach meaning we said we have to tight our belt and get spending under control. we need to deal with the tax loopholes and closing tax loopholes. let's make sure we have shared responsibility. that is the approach that has to be taken. >> do you buy it, yes or no? >> it sounds great, but you can't do it. you you don't have the will to get it done. every day, i see what you guys don't get done. >> i believe they have the will to do it. i just don't think they compromise enough. when we elect somebody we expect
