"fox & friends" starts right now. plug it in! >> at some point, one of our producers didn't say on super tuesday you should wear superman and superwoman outfits. >> that's an e-mail that i would pretend not to get. i don't need to be seen in tights. >> we did a show. >> wonder woman, that's what i would have to end up in. >> this watch could block a bullet. >> i just figured out within the last minute if we're invited to be on "wheel of fortune" we might need an alternate.
3:02 am
>> you need another guy. >> good news for you. >> real bowling out here with peter johnson. >> the good news we're not going to be invited on "wheel of fortune." >> pat used to like us. he did a show here for a while. the word is delegates. >> it is. >> let's break down super tuesday. it used to be a lot more superer. it was 24 states and now we're looking at 10 states. they're going to be significant, none bigger than ohio and tennessee. it will be a nail biter for santorum and mitt romney in both those areas. >> let's break it down. georgia, here we start with an open primary, 76 delegates and it's really complicated now because some of these states used to be more winner take all and now they're proportional and the whole thought process was to make the race go on and on. people are hooking and saying that's want not a great idea. >> after georgia, it's an open
3:03 am
primary. anybody from any party can vote. ohio, 63 delegates up for grabs. it, too, is an open primary. the spin today is if romney is able to win ohio, then he will have won the two biggest swing states in america. >> then, of course, you have tennessee which we just discussed. i think altering candidates spent some time there thinking they had a legitimate shot. it's really down to the top two, santorum and newt gingrich. excuse me and mitt romney. 55 delegates up for grabs and if it's -- it is the winner takes all. >> it's complicated. >> this is what i'm saying. it's really complicated. let's go to virginia. i think this is the most important state that's not being talked about enough. why? because only romney and paul are on ballot. why is that significant? because both santorum and gingrich have lived in virginia. they could have claimed this one of the home states that mitt romney has been saying with other states that he has been born in or lived in so this is really important. 46 delegates up for grabs. they're not in this race in virginia. and as we all know right now,
3:04 am
every delegate counts. >> where is the adopted hometown of rick santorum? he decided it was oklahoma, steve. >> he did. in fact -- and it's a closed primary. they got 40 delegates that are allocated proportionally, santorum is leading substantially in the polls. >> that's a big republican state so by saying it's closed, it's really open to everybody. >> massachusetts, that's probably a foregone conclusion for mitt romney. still 38 delegates. idaho, similar situation. pretty big mormon population, there are 32 delegates. north dakota, alaska and vermont round out the top three. i feel bad for people living in north dakota today. no poll results really when you look at some of the other articles this morning. they say there's no poll results for north dakota, no recent poll numbers. no recent poll numbers for idaho. >> couple of those final states that you zoom through, massachusetts, semiclosed. idaho is semiclosed and so is north dakota. semiclosed means that if you are registered but not in any
3:05 am
particular party, like an independent, you can vote in whichever of the two primaries you prefer. the republican or the democrat. >> so the candidates, two of them at least, rick santorum and newt gingrich are going at it. this is sort of their final call, some say. let's listen. >> listen to the polls, don't listen to all the media hype and all the things about what this race is about. just focus in on whether we want a man who can stand up and paint a very different vision for this country. >> one of my competitors, governor romney yesterday said i was pandering. he said nobody can get -- nobody knows you would be at $2.50. of course nobody knows you'd be at $2.50. there's a thing about setting goals. it's not called pandering but leadership. >> his gas price pledge, just want to clarify, he said he would have a solution to getting
3:06 am
gas prices back down to $2.50. >> there you've got newt and rick and they're taking shots at mitt romney. mitt romney instead chose to take shots at president obama. meanwhile, down at the campus of smu yesterday, barbara bush and laura bush and former president george w. bush were part of a chat of life in the white house and it's interesting, barbara bush who is married to george herbert walker bush said this is the worst campaign that i have ever seen in my life. she said i hate the fact that people think compromise is a dirty word. >> i totally agree with her, by the way. here she is on the phone. she was on "the five" yesterday. >> i'm worried about this campaign because it's too ugly. i really don't like it. and i think it's too bad and i'm very much for mitt romney as i guess is my husband. i'm endorsing him for george. but there i go again. >> she's always been known as a straight talker, someone who
3:07 am
says what she thinks and a lot of people feel that way. they agree with barbara bush about this, the ugly tone and it goes back to these super pacs in my mind and the negative advertising. is that a good idea when you just eviscerate each other. people argue when you get to the major race against president obama, he would do the same thing. maybe, but at what expense to the candidates currently? >> it's like a polio vaccine, which you're doing is getting all out in the open, throwing it out there so when the democrats decide to come back at, let's say it's mitt romney, they'll say the bain capital argument? we went through that? the olympics, he asked for -- he asked for earmarks, we went over that. >> the negatives have gone up so dramatically in the meantime. >> right now, the negatives currently, romneys are up 38% have negative feelings for him to 22% positive for him and that's certainly gone down since these guys have fought. in fact, barack obama has said, i might just run some portions of these debates in my ads.
3:08 am
>> did you just mention barack obama? you know what he's doing on super tuesday? he's not voting for a republican. i can tell you that. but he is going to hold his very first news conference of 2012. he hasn't had one since october or november and get this, even though in the past, he has tried to do big things on days the republicans are having big days, his aides say this is a complete coincidence that the president would be having a major primetime -- major press conference on the same day as super tuesday. >> yeah, right. spokesperson for the president, jay carney, why don't people just tell the truth? president obama will hold a news conference tomorrow afternoon. there you have it. it was short and sweet. everybody knows why the president is having a press conference today to steal the thunder and media attention from the republicans. >> he gave the democrats bad news. you know the $800 million he's likely to raise, they will get none of it to help win back the house and retain the senate. that's got to tick off democratic leadership. >> absolutely. in other words, here they have

3:15 am
could super tuesday be make or break for this republican presidential candidate slate four years ago and then presidential candidate john mccain gained frontrunner status on super tuesday by winning less than half of the states which were up for grabs. republican strategist rich gaelin joins us live from washington. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> let's talk a little bit about 2008 in a moment but first, let's talk about today. you've already voted, you're a resident of the commonwealth of virginia and you found it to be an unusual situation. >> very strange. very bizarre. we walk into the polling place, i voted early on the theory that i would be doing this all over town today in the district. and there were only two things on the ballot. paul, romney. no constitutional amendments, no issues. no write-ins. no county commissioners. just two things. and i walked up after finishing voting on the machine said this is like voted in the ukraine.
3:16 am
two things to vote for. >> like putin, not putin. >> like putin, turn yourself in. >> ok. let's talk a little bit about 2008. you know, everybody said mccain is -- if he's going to be the front runner, he'll have to one most of the states. there were 21 primaries, i believe, he only won nine but the key was the delegates. >> yeah, he got about 62% of the delegates that night even though he won less than half the states. he won nine, romney won seven and huckabee won five. it's hard to remember back that that was still kind of going on and it's interesting. this is before twitter was what it was today. facebook was really the province of college students on the obama campaign so we didn't have this instantaneous rush of reporters reacting to things. if that had been the case, i think that mccain would have had a tougher time because reporters might have well declared him the loser that he didn't get more
3:17 am
than half the states. >> sure. and i know that so many people are concentrating on ohio and right now it's a coin toss on ohio. romney has been surging there and santorum had a big lead a couple of weeks ago. what will be the metric tomorrow morning to figure out who the big winner was? >> i think the delegate count will probably be it. i'm not sure we'll know them all but we'll soon see. i mean, the only thing that newt has available to him is the fact that georgia is the biggest single state of delegates and he'll win that pretty easily. he's given up apparently on everything else. he's not going anywhere. but i think for romney, if he wins with any distance between him and santorum in ohio and if he wins tennessee which is a little higher hill for him but doable, then i think this will be seen as a good night for romney. if he loses ohio, and loses tennessee, then i think we're back in the soup as far as coming up with the nominee.
3:18 am
>> and what about rick santorum then? we understand that he has declared oklahoma to be his home state for super tuesday. how can he look tomorrow morning at whatever happens and say look, we're still in this to win it? >> he's got a legitimate claim on the fact that, you know, two months ago he was sitting on a percentage point and he was beyond ron paul and just through sheer, you know, stick to itness, he's made himself the not romney candidate so he's got a claim being a legitimate candidate and as long as the money keeps going. if he runs out of money and has a bad night tonight and i'm not suggesting that he will. and the money dries up, then this will be the beginning of the end but i suspect when we wake up tomorrow morning, that this will have been seen as a pretty decent day for romney and will add the distance between romney's delegate total and everybody else's. >> interesting. all right, rich has a great web
