early in the morning. >> absolutely. thank you. we'll leave it right now and hand it over to you. thank you to all of you at home for supporting us this week. we've had a blast. >> yeah and you'll have different anchors greeting you in the morning at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. make it a great one, everybody. >> have a good one. gretchen, over to you. >> and good morning, everyone. it's wednesday, march 7th. i'm gretchen carlson. thanks so much for sharing part of your day with us. mitt romney going 6-10 on super tuesday and has a message for president obama. >> i have a message. you have not failed. you have a president that's failed you. that's going to change. >> mitt romney not waking up this morning with a clear frontrunner. rick santorum proving this is still a two guy race. >> we're going to win a few. we're going to lose a few. but as it looks right now, we're going to get at least a couple of gold medals. and a whole bunch of silver medals. >> plus newt walking away with

one victory last night but it's a big one and he's not going anywhere. >> there are lots of bunny rabbits that run through. i'm the tortoise. i take one step at a time. >> reminds me, did i feed my rabbit? we're breaking down all of the super tuesday results. "fox & friends" starts just about now. >> good morning, everyone. check out that map. there you have it. super tuesday results. mitt romney wins six states. ohio, alaska, virginia, idaho, massachusetts and vermont. >> yep. rick santorum only won three but it seemed bigger. he won oklahoma, tennessee and north dakota. and newt gingrich won his home state of georgia. good morning, everybody. >> yeah.
3:02 am
hi. we gradually fade the music out. i don't know what he's doing. he's so pumped up. he's dean of audio operations. >> dean? >> i think so. or assistant dean. >> mitt romney went back to massachusetts and he said, he knew he was going to win there and he said let me see how these votes come in and i'm going to make a speech. he seemed very confident. he seemed somewhat presidential last night and i think there was an extra bounce in his step knowing that i was in bed and i went to bed in ohio, was actually santorum by two. >> you went to bed in ohio? >> true. no, i went to bed in new york but when i nodded off, i realized -- it looked like santorum was going to take ohio. he was up by two points. in the end, it was a late surge by mitt romney. >> you sound like a presidential candidate flying from one state to the next and with 10 states up for grabs, they were all over the place. here's mitt romney confident in his victories. >> tomorrow, we wake up and we start again and the next day, we'll do the same. and so we'll go day by day,
3:03 am
step by step, door by door, heart to heart. there will be good days, there will be bad days. always long hours. never enough time to get everything done but on november 6th, we're going to stand united. not only having won an election but having saved a future. >> for the last couple of days, the romney strategists have said, you know what? on super tuesday, the -- we're not so much for getting a majority of the states. we want to get a majority of the delegates. as it turns out, they've got a majority of states and delegates. as it stands right now this morning at 6:303 eastern time, mitt romney has 415 delegates. rick santorum, 176. newt gingrich really got a big boost yesterday by winning georgia at 105 and ron paul who says it's all about the delegates and he's got 47. >> and ron paul has got to feel happy how he did in virginia and vermont. he had about 40% of the vote there. that was a message.
3:04 am
>> north dakota was a caucus state which ron paul tends to do well in and he -- there was a surprise win for rick santorum in that state. but ohio -- >> you brought up yesterday, no one was polling there. >> and i feel sorry for the people in north dakota and i for get the other state where there was no poll information. come on. every state should -- every state should count. anyway, one of the biggest states was ohio yesterday because, come on, that's the all important swing state. one of them at least. ohio, florida and a couple of others in the presidential race in november. mitt romney squeaking out a win 38% to 37%. but really only about 12,000 votes separated romney and santorum. one of the interesting things is romney outspent santorum in ohio 4-1 to get those 12,000 votes and moving forward, you have to wonder if money is the big issue in this campaign. already, the super pacs are going to be flooding the air waves in mississippi and kansas and alabama for next week. will it all come down to those ads? >> money and strategy.
3:05 am
where are you going to focus? where are you going to put your people? are you thinking ahead? we think of who is best organized to mount a comeback in mitt romney's case. who is best off in holding on a lead and maybe in newt gingrich's case, he needs those southern states. let's talk about what we learned from the ohio poll and the exit poll. >> absolutely. what we did learn -- remember, it was rick santorum who was leading substantially in ohio as late as just a couple of days ago. but that did not work out. and mitt romney won it by a squeaker in ohio. the quantities that mattered the most, number one, was 42% of the people who stopped by our exit pollers with the clipboard says 42% say i want somebody who can beat barack obama. how important was it to be a true conservative? only 17% said that. strong moral character? about 1 in 5. has the right experience, just 17%. >> one of the really important exit polls was best understands the problems of the average american. and a quarter of the voters went
3:06 am
for romney for that and a third of the voters went to rick santorum and that sort of has been his strategy to go after maybe the more blue collar voters and independents and maybe democrats who would actually align with him kind of like the reagan democrats. >> what's going on in the war room with mitt romney? he's still got to win over working class people, he hasn't done it. evangelical christians are running to rick santorum and he also has a little bit of a problem with those who say they're very conservative republicans. >> let's look at some of the exit poll information for tennessee. santorum won 37% of the vote. this is the vote total ultimately. mitt romney at 28%. >> that's got to be a disappointment for romney a little bit. >> it's interesting. we have rich gaelin on yesterday, real smart guy, he thought it was a possibility that mitt romney could pull it out because the race had tightened so much in last 48 hours as was the case in ohio. >> 13 delegates.
3:07 am
romney 27%. 13 delegates and ron paul at 10%. >> let's look at north dakota. rick santorum surprised everybody with this total. there's only 3% unemployment in north dakota. that place is thriving because of oil discoveries. >> that's right. >> 40-28 over ron paul. so north dakota will probably be -- go republican in the general but for now, santorum is the nominee, he'll coast. >> and you knowy good night, rik santorum did. and he was really happy with how he did. just see if you can tell that by the sound bite. >> this was a big night tonight. lots of states. we're going to win a few. we're going to lose a few. but as it looks right now, we're going to get at least a couple of gold medals and a whole passal full of silver medals. >> he was right about that. let's look at georgia, this was newt gingrich's home state and he did take home a win, gold
3:08 am
medal for georgia, 47% of the folks went for newt gingrich. mitt romney came in second at 26%. santorum 20. paul, 6%. >> one of the problems for newt gingrich yesterday was outside of his home state in george george, he finished no better than third. >> right, the southern state strategies really in doubt. if you have a southern state strategy, where was tennessee and where was oklahoma? if he has alabama and mississippi, if he swings and misses on that on tuesday and on saturday in kansas, a lot of people will be saying hey, newt, should you leave? and then if he leaves, you know who is going to be the saddest, mitt romney. >> yeah, no doubt. right now, santorum and newt continue to split the conservative vote. at least that's the argument. here's newt after he won his home state. >> we basically put people power up against money power. as you saw, the very first race they called tonight about 15 seconds after the polls closed,
3:09 am
and so i'm here first of all to say thank you to each and everyone of you because you are the reason we survived every effort of the establishment to stop us. >> just like in past victory speeches, the former speaker of the house did thank his debate coaches, the short people standing over there to his right. >> and 40 minutes later, he was done. it was a long speech! >> some other election notes that are noteworthy, president obama actually loses 15 democratic primaries in 15 oklahoma counties. in other words, another guy who decided to put his name on the ballot, he ends up winning in those particular districts of oklahoma. >> yeah, whoever that was. by the way, you probably don't want to go to oklahoma or texas and might want to focus on the purple states. >> remember joe the plumber, asking the president the tough question four years ago, he will be representative for the

republican party in ohio's nineth district. he will face congresswoman marcy captor. the problem for joe the plumber whose real name is sam, they have newly drawn the district there along lake erie and it heavily favors democrats. >> he should change his name to plumber. joe plumber. that other name is hard to remember and people know him as joe the plumber. let's do some other stories making headlines for you this morning. start with the fox news alert. six british nato soldiers are presumed dead after an explosion in afghanistan. it happened in hellman province. the soldiers were on patrol in their vehicle. more than 50 nato troops have been killed this year in afghanistan, that comes after that recent wave of violent protest across the country. several u.s. soldiers among those killed. deep military cuts proposed by the obama administration starting to kick in. last night, the pentagon began informing bases across the country how many positions they'd have to cut. we don't have the full report

3:16 am
>> gretchen, it is not even bright yet here in california. >> i know. i was trying to make you feel like you were really awake. mr. cain, what do you make of newt gingrich's win in georgia and then i want to get the second question in which is only -- he only bested a third place win in the other states. >> well, he won big in georgia which is what i believe that he had to do. and he did. in fact, he won by 25 points over romney. but on the other hand, as you know, mitt romney won big overall. what yesterday did, gretchen, is that it really turned this now into a numbers game. because romney won so big, you have to look at the fact as dick morris pointed out earlier today on your -- on the network, you got to look at the fact that he's now garnered about a third of the delegates and so it becomes a numbers game. what that means in my opinion is that both santorum and gingrich have got to look at whether or
3:17 am
not they have a plan b because it's going to be very difficult for plan a which is to win the nomination to be realistic at this point. >> but you know both of those gentlemen, maybe newt gingrich better. do either of them have the personality, santorum or gingrich to throw in the towel right now? >> no. they do not have the personality to throw in the towel. if they did, they wouldn't be running for the presidential nomination. >> i know. what's going to happen? because arguably they continue to help romney the longer the both of them stay in the race and divide what many people call the conservative side of the vote. >> here's what i see, because i know newt gingrich better, i believe that newt would do a realistic assessment. in the case of santorum, i don't know him as well and because of his surge which did continue through super tuesday, he -- you know, i'm sure he's feeling his oats right now. he may not look at the numbers the way he should look at the numbers realistically.
3:18 am
so both -- neither one of them has the personality, as you say, to throw in the towel but now it becomes a numbers game. >> uh-huh. so let's say that that happens. let's say that mitt romney is ultimately the nominee. would you ultimately support him? >> yes, i would, because i have said all along, i will support the republican nominee because the mission is still to defeat barack obama. and my message to a lot of people who may not be happy with the way the results came out yesterday is look, this is why we have the process. this is why we have the primary contest. but at the end of the day, we got to look at what the ultimate mission is and that is rally behind who gets the nomination. >> interesting thing i heard out of all of yesterday, back in the early 80's when it was reagan trying to become the republican nominee in a head-to-head matchup between reagan and carter, carter was ahead 67% to something like 32% for reagan. and look what ended up happening.
3:19 am
so is that something that you continue to think about as you support newt gingrich? >> yes, in a way. but here's the bigger thing. the dynamics of this entire race have been turned upside down in a lot of instances and so what i happened to believe is that once the dust settles and we know who the nominee is, the gloves come off. we already know that the administration is going to conduct a very negative campaign and i happened to believe that a lot of things that people might think that they know what's going to happen, they may not know what's going to happen. so history is going to predict in this case. >> all right. herman cain, again, thank you so much for the bright and early alarm clock call. we'll see you again very soon. >> thank you, gretchen. >> ladies, before you jump into your morning routine, here's something you need to know. some cosmetics turning up traces of mercury now? we'll tell you what to look out for and the exact kind. plus your tax money helped fund several green energy companies. that went belly up.

that went belly up. >> stuart varney is here to expand on it. stuart, this is especially outrageous. >> it is. but where is the outrage? there's a double standard here. remember the outrage at the bonuses paid to bankers and wall street people a couple of years ago. i mean, there was outrage! but those were bonuses paid by private companies from profits made by that company. now, fast forward to today and you've got six figure bonuses being paid indirectly by government money going to green energy companies which are failing. where's the outrage? >> do you remember a couple of years ago when it was revealed that some wall street bankers were getting big bonuses after their firms were getting bailout tarp money, there's big outrage. you're exactly right. let's go to the big board and look at the big names that got the big bonuses and you can tell us a little bit about these guys. >> this is ener 1, the ceo, he got a six figure bonus and then you move on to richard howe.
