>> those tapes gave way to more questions about what happened that night and why zimmerman wasn't arrested. the media gave more tanks to the story and so did the activists. >> you cannot defend yourself against a pack of skittles and iced tea. don't talk to us like we're stupid. don't talk to us like we're-- we love our children like you love yours! >> the story has built incredibly in the month or so since it happened. no doubt, a tragic story does it deserve the attention of national media? >> well, the media have certain predilections always interested in the cute child that gets murdered, always interested in the blond co-ed that is murdered and interested in the black victim of racism as another thing. about 300 murders a week in this country and they pick out certain ones and name them and then in this case, it was in

the tradition of emmitt till or james byrd or yow self hawkins until the president of the united states jumped in in a personal way and michael sheerer of the new york times said he seemed eager to jump in the debate and lead to a mistrial for the the defendant, but nonetheless, super politics nova to come. >> jon: right now the body language from judy next to you is saying all kind of disagreement. >> well, this is because jim and i discussed the story a long time ago, of course, this was a national story. this is a story that has resonance, not only because an unarmed black teenager is shot down on the street, it's a story because 20 states have gun laws just like florida. it's a story because the florida police appeared to have covered up this terrible, terrible event and the facts leading to it.

of course, the national media got onto it after it became a sensation on social media. this is a story driven the social media. >> if she is he' right did the national media fail? >> it's interesting because one of the journalism critiques that we all read talked about the fact that none of the journalist's articles talked about-- and the journalists didn't do their jobs in terms of the racial compensation of the community. were there other racially motivated crimes in that community because they're all talking about racism. and the history of this guy, zimmerman and whether he in fact, and all of his other calls he made 30-some over the last ten years to 911, on to the cops, were they actually, did they have a racial component. nobody really looked at that and i think that's interesting. >> and here is a quote you don't normally hear, cal. thanks god for the media because i'm not sure we ever would have gotten the truth out, that from the attorney who is representing trayvon's

patients? >> this story has two components, there's the legal one the authorities are looking into it and media one. washington post headlines, this gives us a chance to go back to the '60s again and what the big media want to replay over and over again. let me suggest something else, i live in washington d.c. and watch the local news every night and true in many big cities, too, most of the crime stories that local stations focus on involve african-american perpetrators, dead black children perpetrating adults with guns almost never about the successful, family oriented, honest, law abiding african-american people and i'm suggesting to you, jon, that this helps feed the racism in some minds, pan gives the gated communities and the alarms more credence. >> ellen, racism figured into this coverage here quickly. if zimmerman were black, would this

attention. >> most likely, it would not have and the fact is that you wasn't. racism did play into it and racism does play into it. and in fact, there was one group that said there were a the lot of these kind of stories that don't get play precisely because of that. >> i don't think we know right now, ellen, that racism played into it or not. i don't hear zimmerman being quoted anything to that effect. and we should be careful, zimmerman may well get acquitted and may not be indicted and already convicted in the main street media and throwing around the r-word, racism. >> she said they always get away with it on the tape he was told to stop stalking it kid and disregarded these instructions. it's hard to imagine a situation where race is not a factor here, jim. >> what about the crime rate in the area, does that matter? >> that's exactly what some of the journalism sites pointed

out that they had, they had not taken a look at and it's interesting, and want to say the press has been terrible on zimmerman's family, we don't know the profiles of the guy or family lives. >> mother jones did a good piece on this, that has a lot of the he will pts that haven't been covered. in fact, it has been covered. >> okay. >> it's got a lot of attention when the president spoke out about it. quickly, here is what he said. >> my main message is to the parents of trayvon martin, you know, if i had a son he'd look like trayvon and you know, i think they are right to expect that all of us, as americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. >> jon: originally the president, white house said it was a matter for local authorities to set out. is it helpful for the

president-- >> it's an election year, reminds me the case between the harvard professor and boston police officer and that was a local matter and the president injected himself and had them for a beer in the back yard of the white house and it's all about him and publicity and about getting reelected. >> no, the president spoke from a personal standpoint. and it gives the poor guy a break, cal. if he wanted to politicize it, he would have talked about gun control. >> as i mentioned-- michael sheerer of the new york times, the president is usually reluctant, burned on the boston cop story, he wanted to get into this. so you have to ask whether this is political calculation and they took on rush limbaugh, and obama-- >> and that's story-- >> if i was mr. zimmerman's attorney i would be really happy with what happened today. >> there's more news watch up ahead next, the media getting set for a big battle at the supreme court.

all the time. of course, they thought it was a positive for them. they would have celebrated. the reality if the supreme court would rule against obama, and probably help give them victim status. they're afraid that the law is going forward in terms of deficit public opinion polling and they see it as a liability in general. >> so, if the court rules against the president on obamacare, how will the media react? >> well, i think the media will have a field day and the media will of course, be bothering the candidate romney every other second and he will not be allowed to get away without answering how he feels about it and they will use it. >> and that decision will probably come out in june and i will have to say that the media has to be pretty good in its analysis of how this might happen. and looking at this, at the justice's records. and i was pretty impressed by it. >> the wall street journal ran

the biggest editorial i've seen in that paper, and on the health care argument in front of the supreme court. >> right, and the washington examiner, four or five part series on this very subject. and there hadn't been a whole lot of analysis, however, of the heritage foundation, and the cato institute and many other proposals for fixing the problem. but to my great surprise, "the washington post" blogger, jennifer reuben write this week, speaking of the paul ryan medicare reform plan, no matter how many times, liberals repeat that ryan's reform plan, it isn't true and the misrepresentation is so egregious that one can only conclude that it's the honest analysis of the plan. >> and here is what nancy pelosi had to say about the health care law, listen. >> we knew what we were doing when we passed this bill, it is iron clad constitutionally. what happens in the courts is another matter.

conservatives. now, he said that he was not talking about changing your point of view on issues, he was saying that you kind of reset the campaign. >> well, that's right. and, but clearly, everybody liked that etch-a-sketch thing and they went off on it. and i just want it say that the baltimore sun quoted romney's person as saying that this was quintessentially american, this etch-a-sketch thing. and yes, it is, because it's done by ohio where i'm from, ohio art and it's now manufactured in china, since 2002. >> and in creative writing in junior high school, use vivid imagery, don't use cliche and ametaphors and this fellow made an analogy, etch-a-sketch. it's right up there with the dog on the roof or the $10,000 bet and the romney's campaign's misfortune, about the vivid things don't help

them. >> this the aides are not-- >> this aide has been a great reputation with romney and been with him a long time and stuff happens. and from "the washington post," the gaffe, it might be a one day story. did it already play to a narrative that we have about romney, which is that he doesn't really stand for anything, doesn't believe in anything and therefore, it reinforces that image, which is most unfortunate for romney. >> and a blood oath or issuing a press release on the kind of staff he will hire against the white house. >> john mccain has been down this path before and says that the media are overplaying this. that he was beaten up for weeks after making a comment about the economy. >> and look, the media bias here is pretty obvious and they didn't found away at obama for saying 57 states and didn't pound away at obama for
