zimmerman shot trayvon martin in cold blood. we will talk with the author of that statement. caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone but, first, let's go down to washington where bret baier is standing by with the latest primary results this evening. we'll be back in 60 seconds. bret? >> bret: thanks, bill, the polls are now closed in maryland and fox news can project that mitt romney will win the state by a commanding margin. further solidifying his national lead in the race for the republic presidential nomination. rick santorum will finish a distant second in maryland while newt gingrich and ron paul are currently battling for third place. voting has also just ended in the district of columbia but there are no exit polls here in the nation's capital. too early to call a winner. romney is expected to cruise to a victory here. santorum failed to qualify for the ballot in d.c. signs the traditional republic base is increasingly accepting romney as the nominee in both maryland and wisconsin romney is leading among very conservative evangelical voters and strong tea party

breakfast. not exactly denny's. $130,000 just to scout the hotel location. six times, six separate trips to do that. $75,000 spent on a training exercise to build a bicycle. here's my favorite. $4 per shrimp at a cocktail reception. four bucks. shop right one shrimp will cost you 27 cents. no wonders what happens in vegas stays in vegas. shrimp are marked up 1381%. now, i work hard for my money and i bet you do, too. this kind of stuff demonstrates the mind set of the federal government as it stands now. america is $16 trillion in debt. so what? f. we are paying $4 per shrimp? so what the money fount never stops. i have been fortunate and can buy whatever i want. still when i walk in a place and see outrageous price i

walk away. it's my upbringing. i'm not going to pay $4 for a shrimp, ever. what happens in the system is cynicism. it means nothing. obama administration quite clear going to continue record spend nothing matter what the debt is just today the president attacked congressman paul ryan's call for fiscal austerity calling it darwinism. he did order the firing of martha johnson but he had to. this is embarrassment to the obama administration. it's happened before. we all remember the $16 muffin which was actually a $16 continental breakfast that was worth about 2.50. the justice department was responsible for that colossal waste. all of us should take the abuse of taxpayer money personally because it's our money. i don't want that money to be wasted. but it is over and over and over again. whether it's terrible investments like solyndra or the failure to watch where entitlement money goes or the

lavish conferences for government employees. the abuse of taxpayer dollars now an epidemic. and it must stop. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight. fox news political analyst karl rove. before we get to that, this, to me, is just symptomatic of the apathy on the part of the federal system. you were in the system for a while. i mean, and it's not just the obama administration. this has been going on for decades, has it not? >> yeah. look, there is a sense of entitlement muck some federal employees. these were not career people in charge of the event, however. what's doctoring to me, i know you are getting wired up about the $4 shrimp and i brought you a couple of 70-cent shrimp from right across the street. >> bill: even that expensive 70-cent shrimp. >> you are worth it. >> bill: because you bought it for me though? >> you will eat it. >> bill: i will eat it because you bought it if it was the folks, the firemen and the cops and everything, i'm not

going to spend 70 cents for shrimp. >> here is the deal that gets me about this. there was somebody in here who did something that is potentially illegal. one of the things they did is say look the government sets a fixed rate for what rooms can cost and we have to give you less than our normal cost. so let us plus up the bill for catering by $41,000 to make up for what we are losing on the rooms. that's illegal, i think. >> bill: the deal was the hotel, she she hotel in henderson, nevada, yeah we will give you the rooms at the rate that the government says but we're going to sock it to you. >> got to make it up elsewhere. >> bill: $4 shrimp and everything else. >> this is a minor thing but indicative of a bigger problem. >> bill: not a minor thing though. >> this is indicative of what this administration is doing. 862 billion-dollar stimulus bill has now been repriced at 825 billion. we have saved a little bit of money. in there is a lot of money. several tens of millions of dollars apparently for a commission to study the most pressing problem facing our economy today. of course, i'm talking about the use of animated characters

groceries to government health care because the government is spending money we don't have. truck driver in aurora we keep doing this we're going to be like greece only there is nobody to bail us out. >> bill: when you spend money at this rate the dollar drops. >> it depreciates. >> bill: they print more dollars and drops even further. the dollar you have in the bank if you go to switzerland you can't buy anything for it. you know, a dollar in switzerland, american dollar. all right. now, tonight, the smart money, you know, already maryland and d.c. are in the romney camp. shows that romney pretty much closes it out if he wins in wisconsin. and you concur. >> i think this is a big inflection point if it goes 3 and 0. then this contest once you start winning and you stand to keep winning. this would move romney from having a nearly 300 vote lead over santorum to nearly a 400 vote lead and we will now have elected half the did he goes for the national convention and he will have well more

>> bill: factor follow up segment tonight, nothing new to report in the death of i have a von martin in florida. passion running very high. as a black hand who has been mugged at gunpoint by a black teenager late at night. i didn't dream of harming my teenage assailant let alone taking his life. mr. zimmerman acted very differently taking out his hand gun and shooting the youth in cold blood. what gives unquote? here now is mr. benjamin the author of the book "searching for utopia, improbable journey to the heart of white america." you know i have been criticizing people who convict george zimmerman on tv. i'm sure you know that all right? you convicted him in print. of cold blooded murder. don't you have any hesitation? don't you see that that is not right? >> well, bill, for me to write that statement, i tried to put myself in the shoes of trayvon martin. now, you and i are adults.

trayvon martin was a 17-year-old. imagine yourself, you are just talking to your girlfriend. you are on a candy run. suddenly an adult comes up to you. now this adult has no badge. he has no uniform. he could be on drugs for all trayvon knows and then suddenly an altercation starts. so the end result of that is that trayvon unfortunately was murdered in cold blood. >> bill: if you would have written that i wouldn't have any problem. okay? except for the last part murdered in cold blood. you who weren't there, okay? have just convicted zimmerman. you weren't there. you don't know what happened. now we have the federal agency and we have the state of florida investigating. all right? assume they will come up with the evidence. we have evidence on both sides that there was an altercation. you have a florida gun law that stands your ground. okay? so if he was attacked, he would have a right to shoot him. you have all of those things that you continue to say murder cold blood. that's wrong.

>> bret: i'm bret baier in washington with america's election headquarters update. mitt romney has won the maryland primary, one of three nominating contests this evening. the victory will allow romney to add up to 37 delegates to his total, increasing a lead that already stood at 300 when today's voting began. the former massachusetts governor was victorious in maryland with the support of evangelicals and conservative voters. two groups that regularly put their support behind rick santorum. during the primary season. romney continued to win the support of seniors a group in maryland that is 30% of the electorate today. voting has ended in the district of columbia where romney supporters are predicting a big win. nearest competitor santorum is not on the ballot here. voters in wisconsin have another half hour to get their ballots complete.

washington rory cooper senior department advisor under president bush the younger. is mitt romney getting money from the big oil companies as the ad asserts. >> unimaginative. same attack ads for eight years leveled against president bush with no standing. look at the money in 2008 president obama took more money from oil than any of his rivals for federal office. this isn't about money. this is about policy. and president obama's policy has been so failed that he is stuck demonizing opponents that is the only gas he has left in the tank. >> bill: parton the pun, here is the facts here. oil and gas collectively has contributed $754,000 to romney. this cycle. and 156,000 to obama. so, romney is up 6 to 1 on that. and overall, oil industry has contributed 7% to democrats. 93% to republicans. so there is no doubt oil wants to see a republic in the white house, correct? >> i think the campaig are

probably quibble with those numbers on where that money is going and how much of it is accurate. >> quibble all they want but these numbers are these numbers. that's what's going on. big oil wants the g.o.p. to win. >> even the "the washington post" fact checker today said that the numbers in that ad that you just played were made up out of thin air by the campaign. look at the donations that are coming to president obama on the alternative energy side. >> bill: no doubt about that and so would you if you were alternative energy guy, right? come on, where is mine? solar panel or wind mill i want' money. let's keep it where we have it now. now, mitt romney seems to me would be very lenient to the oil companies and give them pretty much all they need to get as much oil as possible. would you say that's true? >> well, i would reject the word lenient. i would say fair. we are right now working under the worst regulatory environment for energy companies that we have seen in the past two decades. so, yeah, the oil companies certainly want to have access to the western gulf.

>> bill: oil executive if i never would be i would want that as well. the problem comes though when the oil companies don't come back and give back anything to the folks. you know they are shipping 4% of their oil now abroad that they get and we fine in the united states. speculators are driving up the price of oil and oil companies are basically taking that which is nothing and tacking it on to a gallon of gas. when you have the oil companiereally not helping out, all right, and a politician is sympathetic to them, that's why obama is going after him. i would not say they are not helping out. reject the notion speculators. >> bill: what? >> never been proof that speculators are driving up the cost in the long-term. in the short-term of course the markets works. if you look at the keystone pipeline look, bill that would bring 830,000 barrels of oil a day. that's how much we take in from venezuela way la. >> bill: as long as the oil stays in the u.s.a. but if you build a keystone and it goes to china it
