that's it for this week's edition for the journal, editorial report, thanks to my panel and all of you for watching, i'm paul gigot, hope to see you right here next week. on fox news watch. >> this congressional putting is something different altogether. it's antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity. >> candidate obama is back on the campaign trail taking aim at ball ryan's budget proposal, warning the supreme court against the judicial act rigs, calling out mitt romney on gas prices and offering advice to the media how to cover his reelection. and join me in the next step for that destination, november 6th. >> sweeping three primaries, he begins the pursuit of the g.o.p. prom nation, leaving santorum in the dust.
11:31 am
>> and use ago passive voice, a mistake was made. that's not enough. >> jon: nbc advises for appalling in the case in the trayvon martin case. >> and today show sarah palin as host, how did she do. >> writer and fox news contributor judy miller, monica crowley, jim pinkton contributing editor, and sally cohn. i'm jon scott, fox news watch is on right now. >> this congressional budget is something different altogether. >> it is a trojan horse. and disguised as deficit reduction plans, it's really
11:32 am
an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country. it is thinly veiled social darwinism. it's antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility for everybody who is willing to work for it. >> oh, what an interesting week it was at the white house, how did the media cover it? president obama in full fledged campaign mode for reelection and he wasted no time on tuesday, ripping into the republican budget proposal as written by congressman paul ryan. the president paints it as a series of cruel spending cuts and the question, jim, how did the media portray it. >> they completely agreed, the new york times, editorial, pages were synonymous with me. this is terrible and look, the president is clearly on the offensive on this, and you know, some of the commentary in favor of ryan and romney is kind of curious, the
11:33 am
economists wrote a sympathetic article that said actually embracing the ryan budget would be quote, a good hill for romney to die on, unquote, which is, seems noble, but not enthusiastic. >> doesn't some intellectual honesty require a politician to admit that medicare is in real trouble and we need to do something? >> yes, but, this is what the campaign is going to come down to. what you do about it. and whether or not you junk it, as the obama people say the republicans want to do, and leave granny out there, struggling for medical care, or, whether or not you want to fix it. as the republicans would prefer to say, look, the campaign is the gun. we saw a full frontal attack by the president, and i think you can expect more of this. we're off to the races. >> so, what about that radical vision line, monica. the vision line is radical for the future. >> you can always tell what the left is up to. they project onto the right what they themselves are guilty of. this has been the most radical
11:34 am
president we've had in recent memory, maybe in the history of the united states. for him to go out and accuse the republicans of putting out a budget that's radical when he has sent us into oblivious and 5 trillion dollars to the national debt. 3 1/2 years is outrageous and what i also find out r outrageo president obama went out and made a series of accusations that inspired paul ryan to come out and this is the house budget chairman, he did not pick this lightly, but accused the president of lying. and i see "the washington post" did a breakdown of the president and they did a fact check, and did a fact check on the president's allegations and found routinely that he is lying, he's distorting the truth about what the republicans are presenting, i'd like to see more media outlets take the president to
11:35 am
task and question his hysteria. >> jon: i think that sally. >> i'll take that, paul ryan didn't come out and say that the president the president misrepresented at all. i'd like to see more discussion in the media about facts, as opposed to just the-- and the fact for instance, that paul ryan wants to cut spending and helps working class, middle class poor and seniors and give that entirely to billionaires and millionaires and-- >> that's not true. >> the point is that what's frustrating i think of the media coverage of all of it increasingly through the election we're going to be spinning and spinning, let's put this on the table and credible people have done this and want to talk about the numbers and that's what they say. >> then let's talk about the president's challenge to the supreme court and here is what he had to say about the possibility that the supreme court might overturn his
11:36 am
beloved obamacare? >> ultimately, i'm confident that the supreme court will not take what would be an unprecedented extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected congress. >> and there were a number of statements in just that little line that could be challenged, a strong majority of the congress? as i remember, it squeeked through. >> it did, it did. this is a case where the media demonstrated, the mainstream media, that they're more institutional than ideological. across the board, including just about every in "the washington post" slammed the president for this and some wise guy wrote a letter to the justice department. why don't you explain to me, whether or not attorney general holder agrees with marbury versus madison and the
11:37 am
administration said they had to do which is not what the president said. >> i found at least one washington post columnist who did not agree. he said that he found the president's quote, attack pretty timid stuff, you know, to say that these people are unelected. that's true, that's hardly an attack on the court and to say that he's confident they'll do the right thing, that, too, is not an assault on the court. i think it's just what jeff chestle, a historian, who covered fdr and we know how that ended when we tried to stack the car, called a nudge rather than-- and i'm comfortable with that description. >> hats off at a white house news conference took on jay carney over what the president had to say, let me play you that. >> this spoken moment because he talked about the court not being in a position to overturn the-- >> look, you're--
11:38 am
>> because he made a mistake and you can't admit it. >> no, no. i am acknowledging -- you're sharing in the righteous indignation here. >> and the-- president made a mistake? sally, is that possible? >> oh, my gosh, yes, it is. i mean, the president, you know, look, this is a guy who usually doesn't mince his words. >> jon: a constitutional law professor. >> that's the larger point, sort of. i think that the media coverage, you know, this is what the media does right now. we're highly sensationalistic and like the drama of it and miss the fact. the fact. situation, he was a constitutional law professor of course he understands marbury versus madison and the media has not done a good job about the fact that the republican have their hair on fire about this, made the exact comments for judicial activism in the less. >> no, no, you're
11:39 am
misinterpreting what judicial activism is. the president this is a narrative who he is. it's not the first time he's waged war on the supreme court and 2010 state of the union address we have an unreal spectacle the head of the executive branch egging on the legislative branch to diss the judicial branch as they sat there. the question should be after the decades of the left accusing republicans of imperial presidency, we have an actual imperial presidency let's see the press research that. >> jon: time for a break. up next, mitt romney sweeps three states and shows no signs of stopping and the media are right there with him. >> mitt romney racks up three more wins, riding a big wave of momentum with a positive push from the media toward the g.o.p. nomination. but should they dismiss rick santorum entirely? plus, sarah palin holds her own against the mainstream media on the today show, how did that go over with the

>> mitt romney scores the hat trick going 3 for 3 in tuesday's primaries. >> mitt romney now has more than half the delegates he needs to clinch the republican nomination. >> mitt romney pretty much ran the table winning primaries in wisconsin, maryland, washington d.c. and effectively wrapping up the g.o.p. nomination in the process. fresh off that three-state primary victory, republican front runner mitt romney seems unstoppable. talking less about his republican opponents and more about the president. and might say the president is returning the favor, jim. he's referring to mitt romney directly by name in what, well, kind of an unusual tact for a president at this point in the campaign. >> unless you remember the 1996 clinton campaign, bombing bob dole about the same time 16 years ago. again, what, obama administration doesn't really

plan on running on a government record of accomplishment. and friday's washington post headline, media playing, what, romney uses cloak to hide wealth. and a long complicated story about romney's money and this is going to be the theme for the next seven months is not only is romney out of touch, but hiding his assets. >> are the media helping that narrative that the president is trying to paint? >> well, i think that the-- those in the media who favor barack obama would clearly like to have rick santorum stick around longer so that we can broaden the gender gap between those who favor, or women who favor brm versus those who favor barack obama. 18 points according to the latest poll. look, goodbye rick, it's time to go. most people feel that, whether or not they're republican or conservative and that's what you're hearing in the press.
11:45 am
>> in "the washington post," every day that romney has to deal with santorum is another day when he can't begin his recovery from the riggers of the primary campaign. everything romney needs to do from raising money to raising his positives, is complicated by santorum's gnat-like irritation. >> get out the party fly swatters. >> it's gone on for two reasons and two reasons only. super pacs ie, citizen's united the media loves it, something interesting to talk about the the campaign. and the reality, they've got a move on and talk about the vice-presidenty in. the meanwhile, it's entirely appropriate to scrutinize romney's unpopular with women and middle class voters, and ship jobs overseas, that's the role of the press. >> that would be nice if they actually did that with regard

to barack obama. i'm all for vetting candidates and investigating, they didn't do it four years ago and not doing it again. >> republicans set up this up to mirror four years ago on the democratic side with barack obama and hillary clinton, they like the attention given to that. part of the press covering this one the same way they covered that one. >> no, romney's negatives have gone up pretty steadily, and obama, as i recall, hillary both, positive and negatives stayed above water because as you pointed out on the show a few weeks ago, john, the press and headlines, that both hillary and obama have a great day today. one of the great days, a black and female running for president and romney is just a rich guy they don't like much. >> i think the reason that the campaigns have been different is that the base, the democratic base is just, you know, bases are at stake in primaries, genuinely excited about barack obama and hillary clinton, and the reason that romney's negatives have been going down. because this has been a very ugly primary because so many
11:47 am
of the republican base don't like him. and it's nothing to do with him being a rich white guy or whatever, it has to do with they don't like him and why they're looking for anybody, but him. >> there's more news watch. up next, sarah palin guest hosts the today show? how did she do? >> nbc admits to misleading viewers and gives a heart hearted apology for editing the 911 calls made by george zimmerman the night that trayvon martin was shot dead. how did the media react? the answer is next on tuesday watch. careful, pringles are bursting with more flavor.
11:50 am
11:51 am
night that trayvon martin was killed. here is the actual call as it played out: >> big difference. so big, that nbc launched an internal investigation, but only after airing it. they did apologize for airing it on the today show and other places, but only after critics slammed their coverage of martin and the accused shooter zimmerman. judy, you've spent most of your career in print, but what do you say about that kind of selective editing? >> well, you say you need more than the apology that nbc gave after fox news broke that story, by the way, of actually comparing these, these two excerpts. you need a specific apology to mr. zimmerman who is more than just a viewer who was a little put out by this.
11:52 am
but you also need to know more about how it happened. whether or not it was deliberate, who did it, and what are the necessary steps that nbc says it's going to be put, going to be putting in place, to make sure that it doesn't happen again. >> jon: jim, i worked at nbc news back in the early '90s when we failed to disclose that some igniters we had put in a gmc pickup truck actually caused the truck to catch fire and seemed to explode. now, that scandal only embarrassed a major advertiser, general motors, but it cost the head of the news division his job and a company of executives at date line nbc their jobs. >> that's highly appropriate back then. we must put the words internal investigation in the open quotes, and no mystery who happened. the guy whoever it was did it on purpose. you don't take the snipets out of a middle of a quote
11:53 am
accidentally, and not only do they owe an apology to mr. zimmerman, should do it just like the accusation. >> jon: yeah, because it was a print statement apparently where the policy came out. considering where racial tensions have been on this story, is any of this defensible? >> no, this is horrible, a huge mistake, i think there should be an investigation. we have he no idea what was in the mind of the person who made the edits and action taken. at the same time, let me say this, in terms of what's in who's mind, and one of the things that's this plays into, the media's focus what is on george zimmerman's mind that's the only proxy for race playing a role in this case. the media in general should have a broader conversation about how racial bias should be in factor in crimes like this even if he wasn't an overt racist. >> there should be an external
11:54 am
investigation, not an internal investigation, like they did with dan rather. >> remember, nbc made the original outrage and the new york times repeated the outrage and then when fox news blew this wide open, msnbc ran the original cut, ran the original tape without actually acknowledging the error. that sort of compounds the outrage. >> all right. we have to move on. sarah palin holds her own against the lame stream media, the former alaska governor guest hosted the today show on tuesday and she didn't disappoint, receiving generally positive reviews, and news, a slam-dunk, she was relaxed and poised. palin how knew how to play the game and personable, escaping without any major gaffes, i guess that's a compliment. from christian science monitor, she was a perfectly competent performer poked fun at herself while handling tough questions without wilting, judy, your review.
