some researchers link the radiation to a risk of brain tumors. dr. samadi, i always put up a little bit of a fuss, but i didn't realize there could be a connection. do you believe that? >> let's talk about this. i think everyone can relate to one of those x-rays, everyone has had it as a kid and, we grow up and every time you go to a dentist you get one of those. it was a big publicity, it was published in "cancer", coming from yale school of medicine and one of the largest studies we have had talking about the dental x-rays and brain cancer and looked at 3,000 people, half of them had brain cancer, called meningioma, a benign tumor of the lining of the brain and the other half did not. part is because they talked about their memories, do you remember taking x-rays when you were a child and that is the short coming of this. it's not a real study and doesn't prove radiation causes cancer, it suggests it. we have to be careful about what we are doing here, and the ones

cat scan and go to the dentist, do i need the dental x-ray and david said the study looked back over the years when more radiation was given and the authors say in the paper, we are talking about radiation given years ago. but it reminds us, and we'll talk later in the show, about a higher level of radiation and what it might mean, but ionizing radiation is all over the place, in cosmic race, a cross-country plane flight, the amount we get now is 2 to 3 millirems, which is the same as going on a plane, but if you had it as a child they looked back and saw, it increases your risk of getting this benign tumor. i believe the study is valid but i don't think we have the same level of risk now. ask your dentist, do i need it? how many x-rays do i need? once a year? >> eric: i ask them to try to skip when i go.

doctors are now reacting to new warnings america may be growing addicted to painkillers. sales of prescription drugs are soaring at an all-time high? many physicians are thinking twice, they say before they fill a prescription and dr. siegel, you hear a lot about this, what, overmedicated? >> it is terrible. we have seen four times the amount of narcotics prescribed than prescribed ten years ago. 250 prescriptions, the past year alone. now, the problem is, we're becoming an addictive society. people come to me, in my office and say, give me the percocet, i have been getting it for years, i want to know why you are getting it. a back operation you had five years ago? why are you on it? i have to ask these questions to people. a lot of times they were on it for a good reason to begin with and as time went on the reason went away and they didn't have physical therapy or lose weight. and, so many side effects for these narcotics, people get confused, it interferes with sexual function as david is

shorter period at a high dose. >> jamie: this is robotics. >> this is my operating room and we're doing robotic surgery, which involves removal of the prostate. why is it important? you will find out how much cancer you have in your prostate and the cancer is gone and you get tremendous and accurate way of staging. what type of prostate cancer you have, where it is, lymph nodes and that is important and psa, a test we use, should always be zero after surgery. and you will always be in control of your life. you can tell me, my psa is zero, i'm cured. if the cancer ever comes back, then you can always get a low dose radiation, after surgery and you have the options and the other way around is not correct, if you get radiation you lock up the prostate inside you and, we can do surgery but it would be challenging and difficult. >> jamie: are you saying, both of you agreeing that cyber knife is not the first round of what
7:45 am
you should do, because it is difficult to do the robotic. >> i'm totally in agreement and, the prostate is a hard gland to stage, until you get in there and with the lungs, cat scans are beautiful for telling me how far a cancer has gone and prostate i cannot tell when david does a biopsy exactly how far it has gone and i can tell after he operated and i want to tell people, the conversation changed in my office. it used to be ten years ago, people came in and would say, what do i do, should i have seed, radiation, surgery? there was not a clear answer and the answer is clearer now, because now there are better surgeons using advanced techniques. and the art of medicine comes into play but i want to say,ing a important, it's not one technique versus another, if i say i send people for robotic prostate surgery it is because i know at least one great e robotic prostate surgeon who is well trained and i can send the patient to. the art of medicine, not just about comparing techniques. it is about experience, how many cases has the person done, what
7:46 am
is their training, that is involved and the conversation with less blood in the field, less side effects and quicker recoveries is more in the direction of prostate surgery. >> jamie: i'll add to what you are saying. if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer and told to do cyber knife get a consultation at least on whether robotic is right for you. that is what i'm hearing from the experts. >> yes. it is important to talk to 2 or 3 people an find out what is best for you. we have superb techniques, the smart technique and instead of taking the nerves from the prostate, leave everything alone and removing the prostate away from the nerves and that improved the sexual function and brought the continence to 97%, so, the quality of life is there, get the cancer out, and keep all the options open, and talk to your experts. >> jamie: called smart surgery? we'd want that over dumb surgery, thanks, doctors. very important topic for so many
