>> eric: time for "sunday house call," joining us as always, dr. marc siegel, associate professor of medicine at nyu's langone medical center and, author of "the inner pulse". >> jamie: and they not only look smart, they are smart. and chief of row box at the mt. sinai medical center, dr. samadi. they they're a-team. >> eric: doctors, good morning, we start with what they say is a smashing break through, a vaccine designed to fight one of the most common and aggressive
7:32 am
forms of brain cancer, they say studies show the vaccine could potentially improve survival by extending the lives of patients. it seems big news if it is the case. >> it is promise mission and everyone out there is worried about this and everyone is worried they'll get a brain tumor though it is 5,000 cases per year of the severe type, cochleo-blastoma. and the problem is you cannot cure it, remove it an cure it and when you take it out it almost always comes back and they five-year sur rivvival rat terrible and they took the tumor as they were removing it and used to it cause the body's immune system to tarring it and, cause antibodies it and target it for destruction and they put the antibody back in and found the patient lived longer and the patient with recurrent brain tumor lived an extra 6 or 7 months and that is preliminary
7:33 am
and, in my opinion is just the beginning, they -- the study's author, from ucsf said maybe cancer would be a chronic disease, coming up, in the future. maybe this is -- a nontoxic vaccine, maybe is the future of cancer treatment, and it is very preliminary and the results are at this point mild but for people out there, look, brain tumors, if you are having a severe headache, seizures, behavioral changes, we saw with senator ted kennedy you might look into this but i get the question every day, and, it is a deadly disease and we like to see the cure, potentially on the horizon. >> eric: dr. samadi, it is an aggressive form. we have had it in our family and you hope it can be dealt with? >> it is unfortunate, because it is one of the most common brain tumors and is also aggressive and as dr. siegel mentioned, the prognosis is poor, surgery is the main treatment and when you remove 98%, that is the number,
7:34 am
the rest you can hit with radiation and chemotherapy. so i think happens been good news for the last three decades for this type of tumor and it is a clinical trial, phase 2 and, exactly as the doctor mentioned, it works by removing the tumor and purify it and take the protein and give it back to the patient, as personalized medicine as it will get because when the protein comes in, the immune system says it is a foreign thing and, you will get the soldiers and generals and army and go after the guy and it kills only the cancer cells remainings, and i think it is fascinating and i think it is still, at the very early stage, there is only 41 patients in this study but i think it is a great news for this type of cancer, because we haven't had, for years, and while further research is absolutely necessary, i think for people
7:35 am
with this kind of brain cancer there is hope. we have seen few percentages that go on for a long time and i deal with cancer day in and day out and i don't... the power of the brain is very important, getting to the studies, there are 8 centers across the u.s., in miami and san francisco. and hopefully we'll have better results in the future. >> jamie: sounds very promising. thanks. well a lot of people have sleep apnea, and they can't get a good night's sleep and have to wear a big contraption on their face, but now there is a face mask with a lot of people excited. it is still not so attractive but, doctor, if it works and people can get a good night's sleep, we will be a happier america. >> absolutely true, because 12 million americans are affected by this. and, what really it means, it means without breath. so, what happens to these patients, as a result of soft tissue around their neck, they wake in the middle of the night
7:36 am
and don't realize it and they start to go to sleep and wake up and it continues and as a result they are extremely tired and are fatigued and, there is the risk of accidents. and we know that it is linked to diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and... >> jamie: i didn't know that. >> absolutely, a major health hazard and recognizing it as you said is extremely important and obviously, weight loss, changing the way you sleep, instead of lying down on your back, to the side is important, but what you show is, the cpap machine, almost looks like a spacesuit, you know. >> jamie: is that the new one. >> this is the old one. look at this. you have to strap it around your head and it gives you positive pressure so you can breathe and get rest and the new thing we have, is provent and they are basically nostril patches that you put around the nose and it's a one-way valve and the air goes in and doesn't come out and... >> jamie: you sleep with your mouth open, though, it won't go in and out. >> might as well call yourself
7:37 am
dr. colby. >> jamie: every day i'm learning my stripes. >> it won't work if you are a mouth breather only if you breathe through your nose and it is a great thing and simple and the issue is it is a little expensive, 60 to $75 a month and insurance will not cover it. >> jamie: really. >> but you can travel with it and it works 50% of the patients and i like it. i think -- look, how simple is that to put it on. >> jamie: looks like a oxygen mask you would see someone have in the hospital and i didn't realize, the answer would be stunning, if you breathe out through your mouth you defeat the purpose. how do you know? >> well, actually, this is an important, important topic to talk about, as david says, it leads to diabetes, hyperattention, stroke, heart disease, the stuff i end up treating and people say, i'm just a snorer and when people come to my office as a snorer the next thing i say, ask your partner whether you stop breathing at night. do you have those episodes? are you fatigued the next day? it is a hugely important problem
7:38 am
affecting millions and go for a sleep study and they do, and come back and they say, okay. they want me to wear the spacesuit. but the problem is, that is in my opinion, still the number one treatment but studies show only 50% of people actually abide by that. my practice, is less than 50%. >> jamie: they don't wear it. >> they don't wear it and try it once or twice and can't sleep like that and now here's something else to use instead. maybe. the study last year in sleep had a very, very positive result on this, so i agree with david, it should be tried for people that don't tolerate the cpap but my second line of treatment because i want them to try the conglomeration. >> jamie: a better night's sleeping is everything and a separate topic. works against diabetes and heart disease and everything else. i don't know why insurance wouldn't cover it. it would cost us less money in the end but we'll save that for another day. >> maybe they will now. >> jamie: maybe. >> eric: good point. we've heard a lot of crazy ways to lose weight and a new diet

effectiveness of cyber knife for prostate cancer and demonstrate a low incidence of short- and long-term side effects. dr. samadi, you brought up the issue last weekend and your response to the company's statement. >> what i have to say is that all i want, every time i come, every sunday here is to really give i good scientific data to my patients and surgeons don't only offer surgery because it is comfortable and there will be room for that in the future but a lot of patients call and ask and are confused, robotic radio surgery is not robotic surgery, it is radiation and the advantage of surgery, you remove the entire tissue and you know exactly what type of cancer you are dealing with and i think the data we presented they are at the early stage and this is one size fits all and not every patient should get surgery or radiation and you have to be open minded and get a seconds and third opinion and, if radiation is the right treatment, go for it but i want
