is related. >> ends up being the word. >> simpson? >> home run is two words? >> yes, apparently home run is two words and our system would only make it one word. so gretchen carlson, have a great show. >> thanks, you have a great day. >> something to think about. >> thanks, "fox & friends" starts right now. >> good morning, everyone. today is tuesday, july 10th. i'm gretchen carlson. thanks for sharing your time with us today. a major setback in the war on terror with usama bin laden's advisor just released from prison for promising he wouldn't attack again. huh? >> no kidding. the president says raising taxes on wealthy will stimulate the economy but the numbers simply don't add up and there's more he's not telling you about this tax hike. we will tell you. come in, brian kilmeade out in kansas city. >> all right. i'll do that for you, steve. and mr. president chris christie has a message for you. keep your stimulus. >> please, don't send me anymore
3:01 am
money to hire more public employees. please don't. >> "fox & friends" starts right now. >> yep, tonight is the all star game and brian kilmeade is at the site of it today. kaufman stadium in kansas city, missouri. hello, it's a very sad thing. i don't have time to stieb truman's house. everything is truman flew here, truman walked here. harry truman dominates this state. how did you know that? >> because the buck stops there! >> i understand. >> i thought you were going to say home runs dominated because wasn't it the home run derby last night? >> yeah the home run derby was
3:02 am
last night. it was a lot of fun and the place was packed. you thought last name was the big game. i saw your husband and your son in the third row by the third-base line. as i made the move to the left, they realized i had the wrong credential. i got tossed in the move to get them out. i wasn't on a team because evidently baseball doesn't think i'm good enough. >> maybe you'll see them today. >> we'll check back in with you as we continue to talk with you now because we have to talk about politics and the news of the day. other day, the president said he wanted to continue the bush tax cuts for people who make under $250,000 a year, a family. there's certain things that he's not exactly sharing about this particular tax hike for other people. >> for instance, he's not cutting taxes. all he's talking about doing is just extending the cut for some people who make less than $200,000 a year or couples that make over $250,000 a year, he would like their taxes to go up.
3:03 am
so that's who he's talking about and brian, the incredible thing is while this is going to be a major campaign issue between now and november, you take all the money that the president would raise with this tax hike on america's job creators and small businesses, it would only cover the debt for 8.5 days. that's it. just barely a week. >> because no, this is just a wedge issue, steve. i'm not telling you anything different, gretchen, what we're talking about, this could have been a speech from 2010, could have been a speech from 2009. the bad guys are the people making so much money, the country is going bankrupt because the rich have had it too good for too long. it's the same line. here's the scary thing. 60% of the country think the rich aren't paying enough and that's the major problem as guys like bob shrump point out on the democratic side, this is a wedge issue and a strategy that the obama camp thinks will sell,
3:04 am
it's scary to think it might sell. in fact, charles krauthammer heard this whole thing before. let's listen. >> the fact that he's now pivoted back to this old issue that he's been touting for at least the four years, it's a declaration that he's surrendered to the state of the economy and on the issue of the stewardship of it. this is a white flag. there's no way he can defend it. so he knows this is over and there's no way if the numbers are like this now, there's going to be any substantive difference between now and election day. that's not an issue that he even wants to talk about. what he's doing is trying to shift subjects to say look at the shiny object over here saying that's the fairness equity issue and that's what he wants to run on. >> that's what he ran on as a candidate. remember joe the plumber? the whole fairness issue really came up four years ago as well. i find it interesting, also, that he talked about the clinton -- let's go back to what the clinton taxes were. i think it's interesting that he brings up bill clinton's name
3:05 am
because bill clinton remains popular and a lot of people would probably say oh, yeah, we kind of liked him. maybe we should go back to those taxes and he also says that small businesses who the republicans say will take the hit from this, that only 2% to 3% of small businesses actually make more than $250,000. so really, 97%, according to the president, will benefit from this. >> where does the state of the race stand at this point? "the washington post" poll called a whole bunch of people at separate times over the last couple of days and it is a dead heat. it's tied at 47%. what's interesting when you look behind the numbers, you'll see that 74% say they definitely support either candidate. only 12% say it is unlikely they'll switch which means that for 9 out of 10 candidates -- 9 out of 10 voters, brian, the race is settled for them and what it will come down to is turnout. who can get the most people to the polls on that first tuesday in november? >> and the big story today, as
3:06 am
mitt romney continues to outraise president obama is he's ready to attack boack and some f that fire that you saw to take down newt gingrich and rick santorum will come into the campaign where he'll leave that phrase, president obama a good guy over his head is going to be down to, by the way, he's a liar so they are absolutely going to kick it up a notch and expect to see that as early as today from governor romney. >> it's going to continue to get nasty. he'll pit the republicans in congress to have to vote on this tax cut. if they do not vote on it if it doesn't include everyone, he'll make them look unreasonable. put on your seat belts. it's going to get a little nasty. >> f.b.i. offering a million dollar reward to track down four suspects in the killing of u.s. border agent brian terry. kelly wright is live for us in washington, d.c. with the bureau report. good morning to you, sir. good morning to you as well.
3:07 am
the justice department is charging five people in connection with border patrol agent brian terry's death and i should mention, it's also offering a reward up to a million dollars for information leading to the arrest of four other suspects that remain at large. weapons from the botched fast & furious program were found at the murder scene of border patrol agent brian terry. in a statement, attorney general eric holder said the justice department is committed to finding and arresting the people responsible for terry's death calling it a horrific tragedy, holder added "agent terry served his country honorably and made the ultimate sacrifice in trying to protect it from harm and we will stop at nothing to bring those responsible for his murder to justice." republican congressman darrell issa, chairman of the house oversight committee questions the timing of the justice department's announcement. >> i applaud what they're doing but i condemn the timing. it's clear that the timing has
3:08 am
to do with the house of representatives holding eric holder in contempt for not turning over information. this should have been done. the terry family should have seen this attempt to go public and try to get the murders of brian terry, they should have seen it happen a year ago. >> and the family of brian terry issued a statement through their attorney. they believe the prosecution of brian's killers are moving forward but they want more information adding "however, the accountability aspect of operation fast & furious, the flawed doj gun tracking operation that put weapons into the hand of the men that killed brian terry remains stalled." the terry family also adds they want all documents pertaining to this case, they believe it should be released. all americans, they add, should know who approved fast & furious and who should be held accountable for that decision. steve, back to you. >> all right, kelly wright live in the bureau. thank you very much. it does kind of look political considering that now they've come out with the reward money even though they knew the names
3:09 am
of these guys a long time ago. >> continue to follow that story for you. now the rest of the headlines and we begin with another developing story. overnight, one of usama bin laden's closest advisors freed from prison. the terrorist known as mr. theology was freed from a jail in africa after renouncing his ties to al-qaida and condemning the september 11th attacks. it's a far cry from why he was jailed in the first place. mr. theology credited with forming the modern al-qaida by merging usama bin laden's operation with islamic jihad. out on capitol hill a few hours from now, house republicans will move one step closer to a vote to try to repeal obamacare. there are several debates before tomorrow's vote. >> it's like groundhog's day around here. i'm tired of it and i think the american people are tired of it. i have to be honest in the time i was home over the last 10 days, not very many people mentioned the affordable care act. >> we want to repeal so we can, in fact, replace. there's a need, we can recognize
3:10 am
the need but this is a need that has to be addressed. >> democrats who support the law say the vote is nothing more than political theater because the repeal has no chance of passing in the senate. one of the most promising celebrity chefs found dead in his own home. he was just 29 years old and the canadian who started his restaurant career as a 13-year-old busboy won the food network's superstar chef challenger and went on to host the main and family cook-off. his family said he died suddenly from a previously undiagnosed medical condition. straight talking new jersey gov chris christie at it again. here's what he thinks about the president's plan to defend stated's another round of cash to hire police officers and firefighters. >> have more government police to any square mile in america. don't send me more public money to hire government employees. i don't need anymore. they're extraordinarily
3:11 am
expensive. and extraordinarily difficult to manage. >> governor christie says temporary aid to hire workers only leads to huge budget shortfalls when the stimulus cash runs out and then the states are responsible for picking up the tab. >> all right. let's go out to one of the states, the show me state. brian kilmeade once again at kaufman stadium, site of the all star game tonight on fox. brian? >> sounded very much like a running mate according to "the new york post." very much like a number two. we'll talk about that later, gretchen. i'm over here in kansas city. this is the third time, as you know, the all star game has been here. kansas city when i grew up, the royals were great. and they have not had a world champion since 1985, winning season since 1994. here's the amazing thing of the people of the midwest, they keep showing up because it's about baseball. it's about seeing their young talent who sadly they can't hold on to for more than five years because sooner or later, they'll come to a pay day and guys like carlos beltran have to go
3:12 am
elsewhere. i talked to the people of kansas city about all that and also about what it means to have the all star classic here. > >> what does having the all star game here to you guys? >> it's in our backyard. this is a dream come true. this is a dream come true. we can't do it bigger than this. >> it's very important. i will remember it forever. >> it's huge. everybody in the midwest is a family. it's great to show up in our town. we love it. >> you have to have a certain amount of character to enjoy baseball in kansas city. we love it, you know, those guys on the east coast can't take the heat out here. >> we're here. we're watching it live. let's have a good time, kansas city! >> and you know, it's a good time forbaseball, too. there are 30 players here, 26 and under. you got two sensational kids in mike trout as well as -- as you got this 19-year-old bryce harper out of washington.
3:13 am
by the way, washington is one of the great stories right now in baseball and in sports. and you have a lot of people pumped up for the next generation. i think it's going to be a great game tonight and keep in mind there is something on the line. the national american league, whatever team emerges will have the home field advantage come world series time so they are indeed playing for something, guys. i'll have c.j. wilson, tim mccarver and joe buck within the next two hours. >> look forward to it. thanks so much. here's what's coming up on "fox & friends" as well, the president claims his tax hike won't hurt taxpayers where they hurt. charles gasparino is here to clear it up. >> brad pitt's mom getting death threats because she spoke out against the election and the liberal left. guess they're not feeling tolerant on that side. t

>> i'm not proposing anything radical here. i just believe that anybody making over $250,000 a year should go back to the income tax rates we were paying under bill clinton. back when our economy created 23 million new jobs, biggest budget surplus in history and plenty of millionaires to boot. >> president obama yesterday back to one of his top campaign issues, raising taxes on the so-called richest americans. are those the same americans that create businesses and hire workers? >> fox business senior correspondent charles gasparino joins us live. >> i like the way you equate someone who makes $250,000 a year family of four on long island to warren buffet. if you think about it, that's what he's doing here. i just never met a family of five making $250 that is living like a billionaire but i think
3:18 am
what's interesting about this is the deceptive of it. he says 98% of small businesses will get a tax cut. if you look at the small businesses that create jobs, they're getting hammered he.re 90% of that income gets taxed in this plan. heritage foundation crunched the numbers. it is a deceptive sleight of hand masquerading a massive tax increase on small businesses. >> let's take a look at the bullet parts of this plan. extends cuts for those making under 250, a family. hikes upper rates to 36% and 36.9%. i thought it was interesting that he evoked clinton in that. clinton was a popular president. raised capital gains rates to 20% and reduced corporate taxes -- >> he didn't invoke clinton in that one. >> are you kidding? >> cut the capital gains. >> reduced corporate tax rate and reinstate top estate tax rate to 45%. >> you know, the clinton analogy
3:19 am
is interesting. we should point out that bill clinton came into office and then came a republican congress. he raised taxes immediately and then came the republican congress so the economy wasn't doing that great until 1996. think about that. tech bubble. and capital gains taxes. exact thing he's looking to raise. it's another interesting deception here. bill clinton cut taxes with a republican congress. >> the thing is this has zero chance of passing the congress and the other thing is while we're talking about the middle class will wind up with a tax break, their taxes are set to go up after one year. >> listen, chuck schumer, i believe, and nancy pelosi say you can't do this. you should only raise it on people making more than a million. there's a problem here. it's called an economic slowdown, maybe a recession. the last thing you want to do is this -- >> but he can blame republicans when they stop this and install this in congress. they'll say he's out working for the middle class. >> you know, i'm just a simple country reporter. i'm just laying out the facts
3:20 am
for you. economically, this is insane! ok? if you want to -- >> there's the headline from charles. >> politically maybe it works. i don't know. i kind of doubt it because i think there are good numbers on the other side but economically, this is nonsense. >> well, bill clinton himself said not too long ago they should extend it temporarily. and then he got -- had to come back. >> we have an economic slowdown going on. look at the g.d.p. numbers. they're going down. this is not a good time. we have problems in europe. we have a real economic problem here. >> we have a great problem having you on the show. >> thank you. >> thanks so much for getting up early. appreciate it. coming up on "fox & friends", one little boy would have lost his father if he didn't do this. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> my, my dad is sick. >> your dad is sick? >> that quick thinking only 5-year-old straight ahead. >> but first, you've seen this cape cod kayaker pulling alongside a great white shark. that guy here next to share what

likely to promote growth. so we can't afford to keep that up, not right now. so i'm not proposing anything radical here. i just believe that anybody making over $250,000 a year should go back to the income tax rates we were paying under bill clinton. >> but critics say the president is off base. reince priebus, chairman of the republican national committee is my guest. good morning, bright and early to you, mr. chairman. >> good morning, gretchen. thanks for having me on. >> i guess that you had an early wake-up call anyway because you're heading off to iowa to do what? >> i'm heading off to iowa to talk about barack obama's record and outsourcing jobs that should be going to middle class families in iowa and places like iowa and wisconsin but i'm going to iowa today to talk about that. and certainly, if this comes up as well this first topic on raising taxes again in america, it's a bad idea. it's a bad idea because 840,000
3:35 am
small businesses are going to have to pay more money under barack obama's plan now at a time that they can't afford it. so there's more to this than this divisive rich vs. poor game that the president wants to play. this is about raising taxes on small businesses and that's why a lot of democrats don't agree with the president either. and let's face it, he knows exactly what's going on. he knows this isn't going to pass and he also knows that this is going to cut off 1% of the gross domestic product in this country when we're only growing at 1.6%. he's a smart guy. he knows this is all a sham and we need to call it on him. >> here's the thing. as you know, so much about politics is messaging. >> sure. >> and it appears at least in the last couple of months that the president is out in front of the messaging and mitt romney is responding to those messages. how can the republican candidate and the republican national
3:36 am
committee change that? >> well, for one thing, gretchen, i'm not sure i agree with the premise but certainly some of those things have been out there. i think mitt romney has been very aggressive on barack obama's promises, the words that come out of his mouth, the results of his actions, the upside down nature of our debt and deficit are -- now he wants to increase taxes. our economy is not working. people know it. you just released a "washington post" poll that shows that we're in a dead heat. you know, four months ago, i was doing these shows and people were asking me whether we're going to have a brokered convention. are we going to fight all the way to -- now, here we are tied in national polling. we have almost twice the money in the bank that the democratic national committee has. we're going to unveil a messaging plan now today in iowa on barack obama being the outsourcer-in-chief taking taxpayer money, sending it overseas, not to working families, so we're getting aggressive and i think we have been aggressive but i guarantee you, we're going to do it times
3:37 am
10 before it's all over. >> but the outsourcing response today to be fair is in response to the president calling mitt romney an outsourcer of jobs. and i just want to weigh in on that a little bit. because i think some of the critiques against republicans in the last couple of weeks have been why has mitt romney been more passive. will he change now today? you're going to unveil this web site. do you think that romney's surrogates now will become more aggressive against president obama as well? >> well, gretchen, i just -- i think we've been extremely aggressive about this president. this sin the first day that we've talked about that electric car company in finland where we sent half a billion dollars over there and never came back here and never opened the plant in delaware. this is not the first day we've talked about this. i've talked about this six months ago and so has mitt romney and we've talked about battery companies in south korea, l.e.d.'s in china. windmills in denmark. i think what you're going to see, though, is that through the summer and fall, things are going to ratchet up and talk
3:38 am
