jenna: more breaking news here on fox. rick: alisyn camerota in for. megyn: on merica live" coming up right now. >> reporter: a fox news alert on breaking developments out of colorado. we are awaiting a news conference from the aurora police department as the country watches in horror what unfolded there. a dozen people now dead after that mass shooting inside a crowded movie theater. welcome to "america live," everyone. i'm alisyn camerota in nor megyn kelly today. we have chilling new details this hour about the gunman and the shooting that has left 12 people dead, dozens more shot and injured, some of them said to be in serious condition at this hour the youngest victim injured reportedly four months old. police say the suspect is now identified as 24-year-old james homes. james holmes. he stormed the midnight showing
10:01 am
of the bad man movie "the dark knight rises" he was wearing a gas mask and bulletproof vest. it was 12:00am mountain time. the batman premiere had begun. 20 minutes later chaos started. the suspect allegedly throwing a gas canister inside the theater. between 12:20 and 12:30 witnesses say the first shots were fired, and it may have lasted for up to 15 minutes. at 12:39 police were notified of this massacre. innocent people were lying lifeless inside. now we've been hearing witness accounts all day on the horror in this theater. but this next woman best describes how most people are feeling. >> we go out, we see the cop with his gun across his chest. we go out and the first thing we see is a 13, 14-year-old girl with a bullet wound in her leg, and her stomach, and probably
10:02 am
her chest, and i think she was right there about to die. and we see everyone surrounded her, everyone was screaming, everyone is screaming, crying around there, and wee-wee didn't know what was going on whatsoever. we keep walking. as we keep walking still not going what is going on, maybe thinking one person got shot or something, as we keep walking we see multiple people keep coming out, three, four, five people, bullet wounds, blood, everything like that, cops following them, saying, you know, we need emergency ambulance right here on the scene. we still don't know what is going on. we keep walking to our cars, thinking that, you know, it still might be a freak incident, we want to try to help people. there is a girl that looked at me that said, i just need help, my best friend just got shot, i don't know what to do. and you look at her, and you can just see the worry in her eye and you can just see this she wants help and needs help, and i want to help her and then i look
10:03 am
over and there is a group of about 300 people running away from the theater. at this point in time we knew to get out of there. so i looked at her and we just leave, and we have to get out of there, and we go to our car. somehow we were able to get to our car and leave the parking lot. but it was just -- even after that we just saw cops everywhere, everywhere. and we still didn't know what was going on. i asked the cop what was happening and he said that there was still someone that wasn't detained, and at that point in time i had feared for my own life. before that i was worried, i wanted to help everyone else, i wanted to be there for everyone else. but at that point in time i wanted to get out of there. i feared for my own life. >> reporter: so much heartbreak across colorado. more breaking news now out of colorado. adam housley is live on the scene. what can you tell us there? >> reporter: well, we will owe come back here to the scene in a
10:04 am
moment. everything in this area is shut down. we'll talk about that momentarily. first of all we going to show you video. we might even have live video at some point of the suspect's location, his apartment which is not far from here. we have new information coming in in regards to his apartment. the aurora fire department is telling us that they have found a number of -- number of coke-size bottles full of liquid inside the suspect's apartment. there are tap wires. they don't know what it's connected to. they have established a safe zone and bomb squad technicians are on scene. they believe they are trip wires like you see in a movie, you can see contraptions strung throughout the room. thiethey have brought in a number of firetrucks, one is a ladder trucks where you can look into the windows. they say it's very sophisticated. they say cameras are in place to get a better look. robot -rs on the scene as are on the scene. they are not sure what could be detonated, a fire, possibility
10:05 am
of an explosion. they have an evacuation of that location. not only is the apartment evacuated but some homes nearby are evacuated due to the possibility that he has put together some sort of contraption in his apartment that is set to explode. it looks like that to authorities, f.b.i. there are at least 100 agents on this case so far. we come back here live to the location in aurora, the movie theater is just over my right shoulder. it's not far from here. it's what you would see in just about any other mall parking lot across the country on this day. there is the mall and then there is the movie theater just across the parking lot. it is even tear lie empty other than media. when you drive around the perimeter it is all shut down. you can't get anywhere close to this location because of what happened just after midnight last night. there are no more emergency cars here as well in the sense that there is nobody inside the theater at this hour. all the witnesses have been taken away. at this moment the investigation does continue here but the more important situation is just down
10:06 am
the road only a few miles away from here near another medical center coincidentally and that is where the situation where his apartment is located and it is all taking place right now. there is also a press conference, it's supposed to have begun. witnesses have just arrived as well. a couple of witnesses have come back here. two things are going on where i'm standing. we'll try to get sound for you. one, the press conference will begin, it's about an hour late, kelly? five minutes late. it's going to be at least another 25 minutes we are told until the press conference starts. we should be hearing from authorities in 25 minutes if it goes as planned. it's already been postponed once. the second thing happening here we have witnesses that have shown up over to my right. you can't see them because of the massive cameras, we'll try to get some of that sound for you as we move through this morning. >> reporter: we can only imagine the chaos that ensued after midnight when so many people, we understand there is a seating capacity of 300 people, it was completely filled when the gunman opened fire there. i don't know if you've had a chance to see some of the witnesses or talk to any of
10:07 am
them, but the aftermath there that went on for hours was very grim. >> reporter: yeah, we're starting to. as you know from the scenes in the past it starts to play out as the day moves along. i'll tell you this. we know from covering of course the dark knight in its opening from the entertainment division that this was huon. there were a number of theaters across the country, for that matter around the globe that were having midnight option. as one witness said when they were inside the theatre and saw the smoke come up from the canisters that the suspect threw they thought it was part of tree athee at tricks. people were this costume. people weren't too shocked to see people standing in front of them and said, wow, this is an amazing opening. these when the bullets started flying. people were trying to get up and leave an was picff one by one only stopping to reload. we've heard some of these same type of accounts in other
10:08 am
shootings where the shooter very calmly stops, reloads and keeps shooting. that is the same thing we're hearing in colorado. a couple of witnesses have come back, we are hearing some amazing stories of survival. we'll update you on those. for authorities' purposes while there is an investigation over my shoulder inside that theater the big deal right now is what is happening at that apartment a couple of miles away. >> reporter: adam housley thank you for the update. we'll check back in with you. we have new information coming in on the gunman and his background. our trace gallagher has been following this story all morning. he joins us live from our west coast newsroom. what do we know, trace. >> reporter: horrifying. last month 24-year-old james holmes was a medical student at the university of colorado studying neuroscience. for some reason about a month ago he just dropped out without explanation. in fact we are waiting for a statement from the university momentarily. if we get that we'll read it to you. we have also confirmed that he got his undergraduate degree in neuroscience from the university of california riverside, about 70 miles from where we are right
10:09 am
now. the question in those would be, does he have some kind of experience with chemicals or explosives through his training in college, and in post graduate school? the question also becomes, what ties did he have to weapons, right? he had four guns on him. we are talking about a semi automatic rifle, a shotgun, and two handguns. we know that he has no concealed carry weapon. he has no hunting license. he has no fishing license. and no ties to the military, yet he was armed to the teeth. he was also found to have inside his apartment buckets and buckets of ammunition. but, again, no ties to the military. adam was talking about his apartment. that apartment complex he just moved into. in fact the apartment complex manager said he hadn't been there but a couple of weeks. as far as the booby traps, what the police and the firefighters and the bomb squad are so concerned about now, ali, is what is in those bottles and how flammable it might be. they have the fire hoses at the
10:10 am
ready in case this explodes, but the first thing they want to do is they want to send a robot in to see if they can get a sample to find out exactly what the liquid is inside, and, again, making sure those trip wires don't go, because it was set up that when police arrived at his apartment some time after the shooting this morning that they would burst in the door, and that was set to be the trigger for this bomb. his parents, we have learned they live in san diego. his mother is still home, this is father is en route to colorado right now to meet with the son. the parents have issued a statement saying, and i'm quoting here, our hearts go out to those involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. we ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. our family is cooperating with authorities in both san diego and aurora colorado. we are still trying to process this information, and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy. so the parents say they are cooperating in the investigation, and despite the fact that the suspect police say
10:11 am
gave them information about bombs being at his apartment, that he has clammed up, he is no longer cooperating with police. normal charges have not yet been filed. we expect him to appear in court for the first time on monday. i want you to listen, though, while the movie was still playing to some radio dispatch between police officers. play this. >> shut this movie off,. >> i'll work on it. >> this is assault rifle. we have magazines down inside. watch out for the assault rifle. >> reporter: again the death toll stands at 12. when we get comments from the university of colorado we'll break back in. >> reporter: that's for the update. imagine the panic and the pandemonium and the chaos in that theater as people became aware of the danger and they tried to run for their lives or they tried to duck for cover under the seats thinking that they, perhaps, were going to die right there. joining us on the phone from
10:12 am
aurora someone who will never forget those moments of course, trey free man who was inside the theater when the shooting and the horror began. trey are you there? >> i am. >> reporter: tell us what you saw inside the theater. >> well, i was there with three of my friends, and we were probably about 50 feet away from the exit where the man walked in. it probably hadn't been not even 20 minutes. it had to have been about 20 minutes before the man walked in, and he opened the door, and he was dressed in all black. so it was really hard to see him. he had gloves, he had a gas mask. he had a bullet-proof vest and everything. at first no one reacted because no one like understood what was going on at first. and the man -- he was really scary and creepy, the way he went about it, because he just -- he stood there and just stared into the theater at everybody, and didn't make a move.
10:13 am
and then like a minute after, that's when he threw the tear bomb, or whatever it was, some kind of canister, grenade into the theater, and it actually hit a poor girl in front of us, the row right in front of us, and it just started spinning. and then a few seconds passed and it just exploded, things went flying. i can only imagine what it did to the poor girl that it it. that's when he threw a second one into the theater on the opposite side, and that one exploded as well. these when he fired the first shot into the air. that's when it just became very hectic and chaotic and everyone started running, dropped to the floor. me and my friends we dropped to the floor, but it got to the point that the teargas or whatever it was was so horrible that it was burning our lungs, our eyes, our noses. we couldn't breathe. i was almost like 300 percent positive that i was going to die
10:14 am
or suffocate to death or something of that nature. then we just took the chance, we get up and run, and like it's pretty much a miracle that me and my free friends were able to get up and run out the theater without being shot. i've been watching the news, obviously all the people who have been shot and hurt, and i just thank the lord that me and my friends got out safely. but i'm also praying for those wounded and injured and also killed. it's just a horrific moment for everybody. >> reporter: it is, trey. it is a horrific moment and it is a miracle that you and your friends were able to get out. did you see the aftermath, the carnage, did you see people who were trying to get out but were not able to? >> um, the adrenaline was rushing and rushing, and we saw one girl on our way out and she
10:15 am
was laid ou. i honestly don't know if sh out. i honestly don't know if she was shot, she was laying on the stairs. it was to the point where people were just swarming and you couldn't really tell what was going on. but when we did walk out of the theater plenty of people walked out, blood was all over their face. people had blood on their back, their legs, like i was bleeding from my armpit. my friend was bleeding. there was blood everywhere. it was just gruesome. >> reporter: trey, did you hear the gunman say anything? >> he didn't say a word. it made it even scarier. he didn't say anything. and like me and my friends were talking about it, like people usually rob, like rob places, they want money, stuff like that. he didn't say a word, didn't
10:16 am
want anything. the only thing he seemed to want was to kill people. and, you know, we can't understand why. >> reporter: of course. did he have one gun or more? >> we saw one gun. apparently he had more if he felt like he needed them. but from what we saw he only used one gun in the theater. >> reporter: trey, how old are you? >> i'm 18. >> reporter: trey, what do you -- what do you say to your friends and your family today in the aftermath of this? how does that community of aurora make sensor move on from this? >> um, right now the people in aurora, we all know each other, we all went to school together, stuff like that, and honestly, we're strong people. people are coming together, sticking together, helping each other. there is not a lot at the moment that we can do. people are still in the hospital. i mean we're visiting friends in
10:17 am
the hospital, we're calling people, making sure everyone is all right. um, it's just -- it's -- like no one ever thought anything like this would happen. we're all in shock, we're scared, it's just crazy. >> reporter: trey, thank goodness you are okay. our hearts are with everyone there in aurora today. thank you for taking the time to come on on share with us your eyewitness account. >> thank you for having me. a shout out and pray for those who were wounded and killed. >> reporter: absolutely. thank you, trey. getting word that police at the scene of the suspect's apartment are getting ready to send in that bomb robot that we've been hearing b. joining me live on the phone is kdvr reporter john bowman who has been on the scene. john, i don't know if you can hear me. we would like to know more about the police sending in the robot, because as we've heard from so
10:18 am
many reporters there, the apartment apparently was booby trapped, as we heard from trace and adam house here there. there appear to be trip wires set up throughout the suspect's apartment when police were able to speak in the window they were able to see canisters of liquid that concern them 4, as well as strings that appear to have bobby trapped the apartment. let's see if john bowman can hear us with an update. john, are you there. >> yes, i am. >> reporter: tell us what you're seeing. >> oaurora fire department has moved three trucks with ladders around the apartment. they have used the cameras that we talked about earlier that the f.b.i. and bomb squad put in throughout back windows. they looked around in the apartment, they found devices that they are calling very sophisticated devices. they are talking about now they are going to wait and get the
10:19 am
apartment and several apartment buildings adjacent to the suspect's apartment building evacuated. once they do that and make sure everybody is safe in the neighborhood they will go in with the robot, and they will actually use the trip wires that are on the floor in the apartment that they saw through those cameras, they will detonate these two, as they describe them, sophisticated devices. these are liter soda bottles filled with some sort of liquid. they do not know if there is shrapnel inside of them, or just exactly what the liquid woul be. they would rather sacrifice a robot rather than the lives of first responders going into the apartment and tripping the wires. they will put up a defensive perimeter and make sure the apartment building doesn't, you know, burn up, as it were. they will use those aerial ladders and trucks to fight the fire defensively from the
10:20 am
outside of the apartment unit. it's one of those tense situations where we saw several firetrucks rush to the scene after the s.w.a.t. team left. we thought that maybe there wasn't anything in the building, even though the suspect had said he left it booby trapped. but sure enough firetrucks rushed to the scene, and the bomb squad, and the fire department came out, and they actually told us, yes, sophisticated devices, with trip wires ready to explode if those trip wires were detonated. that is the latest from 17th and peoria, fox bowman first 31 denver. >> reporter: how far around the perimeter have people been evacuated from the apartment? >> it's a confusing little corner, but there are several apartment buildings of the same size, three stories, that are adjacent to the building. and then there is one that is about four or five stories that is just south of the building. so the fire department has indicated that those five buildings will be evacuated.
10:21 am
they are going through door by door, knocking on doors, if they have to they are entering the apartments making sure there is nobody inside, and they are evacuating those buildings. what they also told us is that they are doing air monitoring inside of the apartment unit right now. when they detonate whatever those devices are, just to make sure that the air quality will be safe for neighbors and residents to go back into their apartments, they will do a second air monitoring test, and they will make sure that the levels are the same before they allow anyone to go back in, before they allow any first responders to go in to try to determine what that guy left behind. that's the latest from denver, colorado, from aurora, colorado i should say the sister city to denver. >> reporter: john, thank you. we are awaiting a news conference with police that is expected ten minutes from now. of course we'll bring that to you. and then coming up keith ablow, dr. keith ablow. congressman pete king and detective rod wheeler on the
10:22 am
explosive situation, the bomb, the questions raised nationwide and the psychology of someone who could do this. >> i've seen some bad stuff, but the thing that affects me most is seeing that young girl just laying there, just shot like she was just a little kid still, you know. like how -- ears? call imperial structured settlements. the experts at imperial can convert your long-term payout into a lump sum of cash today.

10:24 am
10:25 am
alisyn: fox news alert for you, we are minutes away from a major police news conference on this shooting in this colorado movie theater. 12 people are dead, dozens more are injured. we are waiting and watching as the bomb squad in another part of aurora, colorado, tries to diffuse what they believe is an explosive device or many devices at the suspect's apartment. it's described as booby trapped. here is a school picture of the suspect, james holmes.
10:26 am
his family in san diego are speaking out, here is lieutenant andreaan diego police department from the front of the holmes' family residence a short while ago. >> as you can understand the holmes family is very upset about all of this. it's a tragic event, and it's taken everyone by surprise. and they are definitely trying to work through this. as you can see from their statement, their hearts go out to the friends and family of those that were involved, and they are cooperating with law enforcement, and they just ask your pay khepbs, indulgence and respect at this time. time. alisyn: here to offer a look inside the man after mass mud derer, dr. keith ablow, a psychiatrist and fox a-team member. hello to you. here is what we know thus far about the shooting. we have a lot of information at this hour about him. when he burst through the emergency exit door of the theater he had on a gas mask, some say a riot helmet, a
10:27 am
bulletproof vest, a canister of teargas. he had at least one gun. obviously this is a premeditated act. what more can you glean about his psychology from that description? >> well, premeditated yes, but it's important for people to know, and this is something taken from my years working with people who have killed other people, and doing expert testimony as a forensic psychiatrist, that being able to premeditate and to plan doesn't mean that at the background of his mental processes there wasn't something very disordered and delusional. imagine if you will if you saw the c.i.a. or kgb were following you. you might take very dramatic complex actions and become very violent to evade capture or evade the destruction of the world, that doesn't mean that at the foundation of your thinking you aren't tremendously disordered and psychotic. that's what we need to establish here. what sort of process led this
10:28 am
man to withdraw from school, where he was after all working in a very goal-directed way, toward a very revolved career as a neuroscientist. what intersraoepbd and what process may have continued and darkened that led to this horrible calamity. alisyn: there was also something quite ominous. the parents are no longer speaking out. when they firs were first contacted by authorities they had not heard by the crime. they described the crime to them. his mother said she believed her son could have been involved. she said, quote, you have the right person. that lends some credence to what you're saying, that something dark had been happening beforehand. >> very possible. and as in so many circumstances like this. we may well, and i believe we will, learn that there were signs, that if people didn't have such a vigorous response,
10:29 am
in terms of denial, to not want to believe that a calamity can unfold, that a ka tas trophy could be happening before their very eyes that they would acted on these ominous signs. i can't tell you the number of cases i've been involved in in which a school, a college, and in this case, i don't know, but perhaps a medical school sends somebody home and says, well they are too crazy to be here, but doesn't follow-up and say, well these threats they were making on cal on campus, we better alert the local authorities and make sure there is a psychiatrist on board back home. they simply say you can't be making threats like that, and saying that there's a plot unfolding on our campus, go home. now, i hope we don't hear that here, but we could. alisyn: dr. keith ablow thanks so much for your expertise. we appreciate it. again we want to tell that you this news conference is expected to start any second now. our adam housley is there with police and we are told some of the people who were in the theater as well.
10:30 am
adam tell us more. >> reporter: we are here live. we have been given a two-minute warning for the press conference. we have all the updated information coming in on the suspect's apartment and the bomb squad being on site there. we have that as well as the investigation that continues in the theater behind me. the press conference coming up shortly. stick with fox, we'll have that for you right after the break. >> you know, i see the door opening. all i saw was a leg. i see a can of teargas being thrown over right near our neighbor, and it just explodes and, you know, all of us start getting teary. >> it actually felt like teargas not just a smoke bomb. >> no, it was teargas. and it was just a lot of panicking. at that point we were just looking for a way to get out. scs
10:31 am
10:34 am
10:35 am
out of aurora, colorado will be starting any moment now. they will bring us the latest what they have learned about this horrible massacre in the movie theater just as the new "batman" movie began last night at 1230 a.m. we have adam housley standing by. we'll get back to that as soon as possible. meanwhile bomb squads and the fbi agents are swarming the suspect's home in colorado. we're getting word they may send in a robot after learning that apartment is booby-trapped. it is rigged with trip wires apparently and bottles filled with an unknown substance. we spoke with police chief dan oates earlier today. let's listen. >> right behind us the building with the sign, studio apartments is the residence of the subject that was arrested this morning. he lives on the third floor in the back. his apartment is apparently booby-trapped. and what we have is, we have
10:36 am
a whole bunch of bomb techs from all different agencies. we have pictures inside the location and we are trying to determine how to disarm the flammable or explosive material that's in there. alisyn: rodheeler is a former d.c. homicide detective and a fox news contributor. rod, when you hear what police are saying about this apartment, tripwires on the floor, string contraptions strung throughout the room, what do you make of this? >> well obviously we're dealing with somebody that is very sophisticated. anybody that has the ability to create the type the situation, alisyn, james holmes we know the name has created obviously he has done a lot of study and preparation preparing for this event. i'm calling this guy the joker, alisyn. the reason i'm calling him the joker, if you look at batman shooting this took place this guy was living or playing out the role of the joker.
10:37 am
if you look in "batman" ii as a matter of fact, there were certain scenes, in "batman" ii almost like the scene that happened at the movie theater last night. this guy was basically putting himself in the movie. reports are coming out the shooting started right at a period of time in the movie which there was shooting. batman ii, alisyn is supposed to be known as the joker's revenge. alisyn: that is eerie. there are soda bottles filled with unknown liquid. how do police go about diffusing disarming this apartment? >> exactly the first thing they will do like they said they will send in the robots. the robots are actually going to trip the wires. the wires are designed if somebody steps over them or walking on them the place will go up in flames. not sure what the accelerant is inside the bottles. the accelerant is probably gasoline or something like
10:38 am
that. hopefully the robots when they go in will trip over the bottles and it will explode there and nobody will be harmed. after that occurs you have the experts that will go in and do additional things to make sure to render the situation safe at that point, alisyn. alisyn: rod wheeler thanks so much for your expertise. i'm sure we'll check back with you in on this. go to fox's adam housley live on the scene where the police presser is just moments away. adam, tell us what you're seeing. >> reporter: yeah, alisyn, less than 12 hours from this incident the police chief walked up as well as the mayor of aurora. they're gathering 10 feet behind the cameras and will come over to speak here momentarily. you see a lot of emotion on members of this department and they walked up. one man has a tear in his eye. i don't know who they were. he is part of the police department leadership. this deeply affects them as they walk in front. scene where 12 hours ago
10:39 am
roughly a horror was taking place. as they give the press conference any second the investigation continues in the theater behind us at the same time, and behind them for that matter. at the same time just a couple of miles away the investigation is ongoing at that apartment complex. it has been the evacuation zone has been expanded we're told to include the very close neighborhood around it. they believe the entire area is booby-trapped within his apartment. they have looked in using a ladder truck from the fire department to see there are wires strewn all throughout the apartment itself. we know that is going on. we have two significant incidents going on. not to mention what is happening at hospitals right now. i spoke with a friend of mine who has a friend that was shot in the leg. he says that she is doing well. of course shaken up from what happened. she says there are also other people in the hospital very shaken and recovering thankfully from their injuries and also people very critical. i'm seeing what looks to be a couple of witnesses to come up to take part in the press conference.
10:40 am
everyone is kind of mustering over behind me the pop-up tent they will stand under to be out of the sun momentarily to speak. the investigation is continuing here. there are a lot of reports coming out. we hope they will clarify this we do know he was dressed in black. we do know he threw canisters. he was armed with ak-47 and 9mm. his hair may have been color ad certain way and yelling certain things when you have a situation like this, any kind of breaking news and so one inside you will have different report from different witnesses. alisyn: as you can hear we're having trouble with adam housley's audio. we'll rejoin him as soon as we can as well as the news conference we're waiting on. as adam said you can see a scrum of people beginning to gather under that tent. adam thought there were witnesses who had shown back up to the scene of the crime, survivors, people in the theater during this hideous
10:41 am
massacre. we are, you can see people are jockeying for position. the police chief is there. we believe soon they will step up to the microphone and give an official statement on what they have learned at this hour. our trace gallagher of course has been following this story all morning. he joins us live from our west coast newsroom. what is the latest, trace? >> reporter: a couple things we're looking for in this news conference, alisyn, we have heard from police this morning the suspect, james holmes, is no longer cooperating which is odd because as soon as they located him he gave up weapons, semiconductoric rifle and handguns and there were ex-plos systems inside his -- explosives inside his apt. as we learned last several hours it was booby-trapped. they're now in the process of sending that robot in to see if they can depheiffer what the liquid in the coke bottles is. maybe detonate or pull those things out with a robot. they're getting ready for
10:42 am

the fbi. excuse me. i have a lot of notes here. there is a lot of information to impart to you. our suspect's name is james eagan hopz holmes holmes. date of birth, 12/13, 87. he resides at 1690 paris street in aurora, apartment 10. i will be discussing the situation at his apartment in a few minutes. his history with the aurora police department is one traffic summons for speeding in october of 2011. we have no other criminal history on mr. holmes. this event began at 0039. 39 minutes after midnight the first calls came in from 911. i am told by a colleague hundreds of calls coming in, in roughly one minute, to a minute and a half police officers were on scene and
10:56 am
apprehended mr. holmes in the back of the theater. there were approximately 25 officers on scene within minutes. they spent besides searching the threer a good portion of their energy on taking victims placing them immediately in police cars and driving them to local area hospitals. in the end, with the assistance of our colleagues in law enforcement in this community there were around 200 officers on scene here. mr. holmes was apprehended outside his white hyundai parked in the back of the theater and he was apprehended with three weapons in the car and one was left at the scene inside the theater. the weapons are as follow. an ar-15 assault rifle. a remington 870, 12-gauge shotgun and .40 caliber
10:57 am
glock handgun. we believe those three weapons were used in the scene and another .40 caliber glock handgun was found in the car. we're not sure if that was also used in the scene. i imagine i will be asked how many rounds were fired my answer is we have no capability right now calculating that number. there were many, many rounds fired. our best available count on injuries as of right now is that 71 people were shot, and that 12 are deceased. two died at area hospitals and 10 are deceased in the crime scene at this time and we are making best efforts to identify and remove those 10. there are many critical patients and i'm not in a position to give you any update on the 59 who were injured. we believe that as part of this assault, mr. holmes set
10:58 am
off two devices to distract the crowd. they ignited in some form and released some sort of irritant or smoke. and we know that his car was parked nearby in the back. victims were taken to six area hospitals, university of colorado hospital, swedish hospital, denver health, rose medical center, the medical center of aurora, children's hospital and parker adventist. we are not looking for any other suspects. we are confident that he acted alone, however we will do a thorough investigation to be absolutely sure that is the case but at this time we are confident that he acted alone. during the shooting in the one particular theater, theater number nine, some rounds penetrated into an adjoining theater, and we
10:59 am
know at least one person was hit inside the adjoining theater. the suspect was dressed all in black. he was wearing a ballistic helmet, a tactical ballistic vest, ballistic leggings, a throat protector and a groin protector and a gas mask and black tactical gloves. we had over 50 detectives respond to the scene including the 150 to 200 police officers and deputies and over 50 victim advocates to work with family members and all our federal partners are here and we deeply, deeply appreciate their help. we've asked the community if there are any tips, any observances any witnesses to this event that we vane already contacted that they call our tip line, 303-739-1862. in addition, for those in the community who feel traumatized by this event we

have a hotline being offered for aurora mental health for counseling. the phone number is 303-617-2300. the crime scene is rather large. it includes numerous cars in the parking lot. we're doing our best to get them released to the owners of those cars as soon as possible but we will be here for some time. with regard to the residents, mr. holmes lives at 1690 paris street. we responded up there fairly quickly after we identified him and our investigation determined that his apartment is booby-trapped with various incendiary and chemical devices and apparent trip wires. so we have an active and difficult scene there. it may be resolved in hours or days. we simply don't know how we're going to handle that. i will tell you we evacuated residents to a safe distance and it includes five buildings in the area being

evacuated. we've been asked how many folks were in the theater. we can tell you there were four showings of the "batman" movie. all of them were sold out. we have interviewed close to 200 witnesses as to how many people are in the theater, that is the best i can tell you. a caution about social media. please as responsible jump journalists be very careful. we're analyzing all sorts of media out there about this event and i can tell you that we're already finding that there are a lot of pranks. there is even someone who called a national media station an represented to be me. our colleagues in the adjoining mall have closed the mall for the day out of cooperation and the spirit of cooperation with our investigation. with that i would like to introduce district attorney carol chambers to make a few remarks. after she makes some remarks

military helped us tremendously and a lady who was a nurse helped her breathe and helped move her to the police car so she could get to the hospital. alisyn: always striking during horrible tragedies like this when you hear about heroes who stop to help other people. when you were in the theater, elizabeth, did you see the gunman? >> i did not. we were thankfully very much up at the top and ducked down and did not pause to see anything. all i saw was the smoke bomb go and hurt the shots and ducked down. alisyn: what was it like trying to get out of the theater amidst the pan ammonium that broke out? >> that was absolutely crazy. my friend got swept up in the wave. i saw her and i can not get separated from her. i need to make sure i've got her. it was just, it was panic. it was crazy. i thought someone would be stampeded. it was very emotional. alisyn: what's, can i ask your friend's name? >> yes. it is bonnie cates.
11:28 am
alisyn: when bonnie realized she had been shot, what was she saying to you? >> she didn't even tell me she had been shot. she started praying and we were praying together and we got out. i've been shot and i can't do this. i was trying to have her lean on me. i can't walk. i can't make it. i'm going to have to sit down. alisyn: i can hear how emotional this is of course, elizabeth. we just listened into the police press conference which the police chief described the shooter and it sounds incredibly eerie. he was dressed all in black. he had all sorts of protective body gear on. it sounds terrifying when he burst into the emergency exit in the back of the movie theater. what did you think was happening? >> it was completely unreal. i have never been in this situation like that which it just seemed completely fake. even as the bullets were fly i thought this isn't real. this is not real bullets. until i actually stepped out
11:29 am
the theater and saw people bleeding from their faces, i went, oh, my gosh, this is really real. alisyn: elizabeth, we're thinking of you and your friend bonnie. we pray for a speedy recovery for her. thank you for coming on and sharing your experience with us. >> thank you so much. appreciate it. alisyn: in three minutes we're going to have an interview with a father whose 6-year-old daughter was shot and killed during this massacre. we'll be right back. >> some guy comes running in and he is running through the theater like the theater exits and he is like don't go out in the lobby. someone is shooting people out there. and he runs out, at that point we still weren't sure in someone was pranking us or what. we at that point decided to leave. the medicare debate continues in washington...

alisyn: fox news alert for you. as we learn more about the disturbing details behind today's massacre in colorado, we're getting an equally disturbing look at the man, the suspect in custody. he is suspected methodically gunning down dozens and dozens of people in cold blood and the seemingly normal left led by james holmes is only hadding to the mystery this hour. adam housley is joining us live from a record can colorado. what more do we know, adam? report. >> reporter: four scenes are active. this is the movie theater. centuriry 16.
11:34 am
that is where the suspect opened fire. if you walk straight through the theater and out the back door that is where police officers found him at his car after he opened fire and shot all the rounds hit some people killing 12 that we know of right now. that is where the scene is still active. there are still bodies inside and multiple investigators here and cars that were shot or killed are left from the midnight showing. from this location we go over a couple miles away to the apartment of the suspect. that is still an active scene. there is a hook and ladder up so investigators can see inside. what they see inside are coke bottles filled with some sort of liquid intertwined with incendiary devices as well as wire. it appears the entire apartment is booby-trapped and the suspect said as much as he was somewhat cooperative with investigators. from that scene we go to the hospital where people are recovering. there are story after story
11:35 am
as at least 50 people have been shot. the numbers are fluctuating. we heard in the press conference 70. someone else said 50. we know a lot of peel are still in very serious condition and critical condition in area hospitals. the fourth location is at the police headquarters also just a couple miles from where we're located. the suspect is there and still being interviewed and being investigated. he will appear in court in aurora on monday morning. we're told the hearing will be only five minutes or so and some of the charges may be read at that time. those are the four locations, allison. all for are active at this hour. you can add a fifth where family and friends are told to go to a high school where they will be told about their loved ones. some apparently luckily and thank any walked away and not yet made touch with their loved once. that is what is going on alisyn. you see officials with the pain on their faces as they move forward with all five

11:37 am
>> reporter: are you just in shock? >> yeah. i need to make sure that she's at least okay. i lost the rest of my family. >> reporter: so are you frustrated right now? >> just need to see her. i just need to make sure she is going to be okay. >> reporter: and the security was concerned that you were going it hurt somebody? what would you like to say? this gunman is alive. >> hopefully not for long. hopefully some people will at least have some common courtesy and take care of somebody who has the will power to murder innocent child and other innocent people. hopefully they will do that or the law enforcement has some kind of courtesy and some kind of basic justice. alisyn: dr. henry cloud, a clinical psychologist and he joins us now.
11:38 am
he is the author of necessary endings, alongwith dr. george wood, general superintendent of assemblies of god and author of, living in the spirit. gentlemen, thanks for joining us we clearly need help in the mental health and spiritual arena after this unspeakable tragedy. doctor cloud, let me start with you. we've all been traumatized hearing the stories and what happened in the theater and particularly people in aurora and anyone that witnessed it. what is the first thing people should do today? >> first thing, first thing, in something horrible as they need to get around each other. just support and human contact with the people that we feel connected to and safe with, that just does wonders. it changes the brain's, the ptsd victims, calms them down. lets them know they're not in that moment anymore but that life will be okay. that is the number one
11:39 am
thing.dr. cloud, you bring up ptsd and think that is apt. not to mention this is an area, 15 miles away from columbine the scene of the other horrific shooting. >> right. alisyn: it is expected that people there will have ptsd lingering from this for a long time. >> right and not only in the ones in the theater but probably some others as well. the big factors for ptsd are something that is out of your control and it's just too huge to process but also it is unpredictable. and the fact that they have gone through, you know, a few of these, it sets off, the brain gets hyper vigilant and it is always on this active state because it doesn't know what's coming. not only is people in the theater that went through it or witnessed it but probably, you know, many in that community. so it's very important that everybody around there is doing three or four of the right things that we know help with actually preventing the onset of ptsd. alisyn: so dr. wood, we just
11:40 am
heard some medical answers for how people can go on by supporting each other and embracing the community. let's talk about the spiritual answers. what do you say to people who say, how could this ever have happened and what are we supposed to make of it? >> well --. alisyn: sorry, for dr. wood. go ahead. >> i agree with what the good doctor has said that one of the things that immediately should happen is that we just surround one north with our presence. in the bible in the book of jobe went through unspeakable tragedy the mistake three of his friend kept trying to give him all kinds of explanations and that didn't help him any. he needed somebody to sit with him for a while and share in his grief. and we remember that jesus himself went at the grave of his friend, lazarus. and so the appropriate beginning place is just to simply put our arms around the 12 families who have gone through the loss of a
11:41 am
loved one, a child, a parent, a sibling and also the 59 people that are recovering in hospitals today. just pray for them and ask the lord to help them and to give them strength in this time. that's, that would be certainly the first step. alisyn: and dr. wood, heard that father there, that heartbroken father who lost his 6-year-old daughter. he spoke of understandably wanting justice, wanting revenge. i think a lot of people feel that way, the hatred that they feel toward this gunman who brought such unspeakable horror to everyone. what are we supposed to do with these feelings of revenge that we have? >> that is a very natural reaction to grieve, anger is, and i think that it takes, it certainly takes time in the grieving process to go past anger. there is a wonderful phrase in the new testament that says overcome evil with good and the ultimate level of acceptance for a tragedy is
11:42 am
when we're able to translate that evil into somehow an act of good for others. i know aurora is not far from the columbine tragedy and i'm sure that those that went through the columbine tragedy, knowing what it is like to go through this experience are really greatly positioned, best to help those who are going through the present tragedy. that we, we learned from those experiences and, anger is understandable. on the other hand, if it becomes long and deep-seeded anger it can corrode your personality and turn you into a person you don't want to be. what happens in your is every bit as important as what is happening to you. and so, over the course of time, as the as you process grief, you work, in a healthy way out of the anger stage into other stages which ultimately lead to acceptance. alisyn: dr. george wood, dr. henry cloud, thank you both for your comforting

11:47 am
security checks outside the showing of this batman film from now on. trace gallagher has more from los angeles. what is going on there, trace? >> reporter: you mentioned the red hair. i will get to that in a minute and something very interesting ray kelley said about that but first we told you earlier when he rented the apartment that is now booby-trapped that firms are looking to see if those things are actual bombs, he put down on his application that he was quiet and introverted, right? that didn't turn out to be the case. i want to play sound from one of his neighbors in san diego where he grew up. play that. >> no indication. seemed to be normal boy. go to college to get a master's degree in neuroscience and he come back and i asking his mom, like, did he get it and did he get any job. said he couldn't get a job. he looked for it but find out he go back to school. >> reporter: by the way the same normal and nice boy who

apparently the police chief said dressed in black had a ballistic helmet, a gas mask inside the theater, black legs and groin protection. new york police commissioner ray kelley was talking about security in new york at "batman" premiers there when he said this about the suspect, first time we had heard it, listen. >> when you have some information, i believe most of it is public, clearly looks like a deranged individual. he had his hair painted red. he said he was the joker. obviously the quote, enemy of batman. >> reporter: again, he said red hair, painted like the joker. said he was the joker. the police chief, we asked him that in the news conference. he wouldn't talk about it at all. we have now confirmed with a second source, that yes, the shooter's hair was painted red and so was his goatee from a source inside that theater. interesting stuff. alisyn: that's chilling, trace because the police chief in aurora would only say he was wearing the
11:49 am
ballistic helmet. it is hard to know if anybody saw his hair. there are two sources now. trace, thank you for the update. warner brothers, studio behind the film canceled the premier of this movie in paris. they released this statement. warner brothers and the film-makers are deeply saddened to learn about the shocking incident. we extend our sincere sympathies to the family and loved ones at this time. harvey levin, from "tmz". this was obviously supposed to be a huge, happy summer blockbuster event and now this, harvey. >> well it's all gone. all of those, you know, emotions and the joy of all this clearly gone. what is interesting, warner brothers is not saying anything more. we're part of the warner brothers family. they're on lockdown not talking to anybody about this beyond what they said. we can tell you right now the plan seems to be just hold the course that the
11:50 am
movie is playing in all of the theaters. we've been ebb canning. there have not been a lot of people trying to get their money back even though on our website we put a poll asking people if they're scared to go to the movies now. 42% say yes. so, it seems like it is clearly shaken a lot of people but the people who really wanted to go see this movie do not seem detered, alisyn. alisyn: those fears, harvey, are not all together unfounded. there are possible copycats. we see that in other big notorious crimes. in fact the police chief here in new york and police chief in tampa say they are going to take extra measures, precautionary measures at these openings outside of an added layer of security. >> it is happening in hollywood by the way. we talked to people at the l.a.p.d. and they are stepping up patrols as well. look, here is the bottom line to it. you have certain people in this society who are weak links and we have been seeing this increasingly and, you know, everybody is trying to kind of understand
11:51 am
this guy to figure out what made him tick and everything else. at a point you're not going to be able to do that because you've got to be crazy to do what he allegedly did. and these weak links exist. it is just part of living in this world and the issue is, do you become agoraphobic, do you shut yourself in or take your chance of living your life. seems like for the most part people are willing to take that chance. alisyn: of course the movie as we reported, the film-makers canceled the premier in paris. what does this mean, again this opening weekend, that was supposed to be met with such fanfare? >> well, the bizarre thing is, that look, everybody knew about "batman", knew about the movie before this all happened but the tragic fact that i'm going to state it as reality, now everybody is talking about this movie right now. so you know, the need to have a premier, really there
11:52 am
was really never a need give the anticipation of the movie you about this is all people are talking about today and makes sense. why would you possibly have a premier and look happy in the middle of what is going on? but the reality is that this is the movie now everybody is talking about and frankly there were probably be even more interest in it because of this horrible thing that happened. alisyn: we shall see if it scares people away or only increases interest. harvey levin of "tmz". thank you so much. >> sure. alisyn: we're also keeping track of this hour after the dozens of victims treated at this hour across hospitals in the denver area. how do hospitals react to crisis situations like this? and what kind of treatment are victims receiving? joining us now, dr. marc siegel, fox medical a-teamer. always great to have you. what happens in a situation like this where they have mash casualties into a hospital? >> the first thing that area, denver, has really great
11:53 am
trauma hospitals. swedish hospital, university of colorado which are involved are among the top trauma centers in the country. several issues the tear gas or type of smoke that was involved will cause irritants to people's eyes, promote asthma. that is the tip of the iceberg. people that are gunshot victims, main thing you do is stablize them, give intravenous fluids, blood, because they lose a lot of blood. you don't remove bullets unless they're threatening organs. make sure the body organs are not in danger and you wait. you try to keep the patient stable. the other thing mentioned by harvey i want to bring up here there is a huge fear factor going on. it is not surprising that 42% of people polled say they don't want to go to the movies. what actually happens, and we're contributing to that on television right now because we have to report this terrible, terrible crime, people plug into that because of fear. it is one of the most powerful human emotions there is. we plug that that and we think it us going to happen to us next.
11:54 am
although statistically it is extremely unlikely that this is going to happen again. maybe a copycat i am krool is possible -- crime is possible but this will not happen in movie theaters throughout the country. alisyn: of course not. i'm glad you brought up the mental health aspect of this, dr. siegel, because this has a residual effect. this is not anything, you tell me, i don't know if the mental health repercussions are acute today or do these up weeks and months later? >> i think both is true. we're seeing an acute reaction. you brought up before the issue of posttraumaic stress, believe it or not it just doesn't apply to that region. supposed to be people in the theater but ends up applying in a milder way across the country. you recall after 9/11, september 11th, a loud noise scared people for a while the thought a bomb may be going off. the same thing with columbine in that exact region in 1999. this is 15 miles away from the movie theet are. i think you will see a lot
