janet was upset. said quotes about i don't want her to do that she shouldn't be doing this. why? because janet her career is not doing that well it's lagging. that gave randy and the guy as little bit of mocks ee to go after john the lawyer who runs the estate who by the way hadz done a brill jaiant job. michael died 500 million in the hole. he is just about even and the he is skate is valued at a billion dollars going on tour with pepsi, cirque du soleil and done a wonderful job. the will is phony. california superior court and said no the will is valid. this is about a bunch of people trying to get their hands on a bunch of money. michael never wanted them to have anything to do with his children his father or brothers or sisters. >> can you stay on and have ample time to respond to what

10:28 pm
this is a fox news alert. space rover curiosity made a landing on mars. nasa isn't expected to find out at about 1:30 a.m. at the earliest. and with us is former nasa astronaut tom jones joining us from our washington, d.c. bureau. and this must be a special night for enthusists and everyone else out there watching. >> mars has been in our imagination over a century. we've had mars rover spirit and opportunity on mars this, rover is so times bigger than those previous rovers and we're going to learn about the suitibility of mars for past and present life there. >> and this is especially intense because nasa is testing out a brand new landing technique.
10:29 pm
>> it's a real nail biter, there is a sus tim that is there on the planet we're awaiting 14 minutes of radio delay. to get signals back to tell us whether this is being put down on the surface, we're hearing signals to indicate whether each step is been going properly. when we get the final step that it's sitting on mars we'll know it goes for a five-year plus mission. >> and this would only be a success if it's transmitting information in the right place. seems like there is so much they have to get right. what happens if it isn't in the right place. >> there is feed back. >> tom i'm going to talk to nasa tv live broadcasting from
10:30 pm
j.p.l. in pasadena, california. >> that converged at seven meters a second. >> right. >> and this is a separation of power light. down to 90 meters per second and sending. >> this is a power code with director of communications at this time. we're down to 86 meters per second and sending.
10:31 pm
we've lost tones from earth at this time. this is expected. we're continuing monitoring. >> and ground solution equals 18 seconds. >> standing by for back up separation. >> we're in power flight. descending about 0 meters per second. 500 meters in altitude. standing by for sky crane. >> we've found a place to come in ready for sky train 40
10:32 pm
meters altitude. this is about 7.5 meters as expected. >> this is stable. stable. >> woo-hoo! woo! >> going to see where our curiosity will take us.
10:33 pm
>> now we know the landing was a success, lots of celebrating going on right now from jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena. tom, we see celebrating but what does this mean now that the landing was a success. >> this just opens the next chapter in mars exploration, congratulations to nasa on this amazing feat. there is about a five-year mission to set the rover climbing a three-mile mountain looking for evidence of past hospitalable climates and looking for chemical tracer that may have once existed there. >> and there is why pick that as the landing spot? >> because orbital photography is indicated that gale was once a tropical depression
10:34 pm
filled with water, a lake on mars. chemical conditions, billions of years ago may have been correct for origin of live to have occurred there. >> and this is just amazing. so what we haven't seen pictures yet. and what can you tell us about what we might see? >> there is on the belly just above the wheels is a camera, a set taking images of the dirt below touchdown point. so the size of a mini cooper will be looking at grounds and we'll see a small image just confirming that they're on the surface, we'll get a gray and blurry image in the next few minutes up to about two hours from now depending on how the relay comes confirmation original images are coming back safely through the relay satellite. >> this is very long coming
10:35 pm
for the cruise working on this. and now, curiosity does end up finding water or signs of live how significant would that be? and there is a first image from the landing itself. if they do find live what did that mean for us? >> this is not the actual job of the rover. they're looking for traces of climate and chemical traces that life night be there. and once discovering evidence it's going to change our idea of live on earth that will have arisen somewhere else telling us there could be millions of planets that could post life as well as finding our place in the universe. that he wills us about chances of finding other intelligent
10:36 pm
civil saigs down there. >> and they'd talked about the fact they said we've got to win or if we lose that is going to be a big problem. so what can you tell us about that? >> this is a do or die moment this, has been in development for 10 years and this is, had it failed it would have left a vast vacuum. there would have been no funds for a follow up z there would have been a trenchman in the ability tochl plor mars or getting up an ability to lead that in the future, this is defers those questions for at least a few years and nasa has to makeup the find about whether we want to continue this program for scale back.
10:37 pm
>> and we're talking about finding other signs of live and other test down things like ice. and there is something like as you were saying would be very significant. and it may be in the fewer tour if the planet heats up possibility there would be live again? >> this is probably like life on earth. this may be surviving there, today. and so this rover has a small drill and can find tracers of live f we find conditions were live that would indicate need
10:38 pm
fr a roll up mission this, is going to be the big draw to get to the bottom of the questions of life on mars. maybe a drill rig team can drill bee will he the surface to look for microbes. so this is going to call for a follow up. we don't know answers yet. they will be interesting and perhaps will open up a draw for human exploration of mars. >> probably sounds like something from a science fiction movie that you ca can -- someone half human exploring mars. how far off that would that be? they need to find signs of live and this is expected to be followed up by a return sample mission for analysis here. that is taking place there are
10:39 pm
astronauts putting their home work to bridge this goal of 35 million miles between earth and miles. by to 40 we might be ready to send human explorers there. that is many, many small steps and this is trying to build up capabilities for survival and existing on the surface using resources that is already there. >> for anyone just tuning this in, this is a very expensive mission. there is a lot riding on it. can you tell us what this means for the future of mars exploration? and planetary exploration? >> this is two and a half billion dollars.
10:40 pm
and had it failed it would have been time to look and see whether it could manage these missions successfully. and this means there is a new capability looking for past traces of life on mars. shows the u.s. can put down a lender like this. and so this does remain for us and for nasa to show whether or not we intend to continue and follow up with future robot scouts and intention of people there for good this, is one of the major questions of the 21 century. and i want to talk about once again, what amazing this was for the rover to land. everything had to happen exactly at the right moment and different thing koz have gone wrong and explain how
10:41 pm
they were able to pull this off? >> this is amazing and astonishing. we're seeing gray images showing the dirt so what happened here is that it was launched to mars and cruised to mars for eight to nine months. and there is before touchdown everything worked mazingly. this first time it was tried this is just one time. have you to hand to it this team and scientists. i can only imagine release after drena lynn and satisfaction going on now. >> and what -- the fact that this went very well, and again we saw how happy crews were. how is this going to affect our exploration?
10:42 pm
that we're considering and now will be able to get funds needed to do that? >> this is a great question. and there is a 20% cut in next year's budget. this, i hope will inspire the public cause interest in nasa mars and other missions and maybe they can marshal this support to follow up in a level with mars exploration and perhaps to the moon so human explorers can follow up these kinds of discoveries. >> and thank you so much for being with us. you have been watching special coverage of the space rover curiosity's landing on mars which we now know was a success. we'll take you back to "geraldo at large" right after the break.

10:46 pm
family. she is an entertainer. we appreciate tenay has come on tonight. we are not talking about how talented she is. what do you think about what the siblings tried to do? >> i think very simply what they are trying to do is get control of their mother you heard the attorney earlier say if they can somehow get her replaced. these are her children. come on ma give me a few bucks. she could turn over her inheritance to them. she is 82 years old. i think they kidnapped her. her to kill her like a crime but they were trying to take control of her. >> bob massi do you agree with that? >> what is glaring to me is these people were not named as any beneficiaries. there's no specific request for them at all. primarily as we know with children. bottom line it is all about
10:47 pm
children. if they would have gotten money from ladies and gentlemen if she would have been given 5 million or 10 million we wouldn't be talking about this. try to circumvent it try to get some money and move on. if money was in the will this discussion they wouldn't even be here. >> catherine jackson is still married to joe jackson. i don't know what catherine jackson's will is like, but this is as bob massi remind us an 82-year-old woman. who would be her beneficiaries. she is enormously wealthy and getting wealthier by the hour. who would her beneficiary be? >> she doesn't have a say in that. the trust puts her 40 percent of the entire estate in a trust for her life time. upon her death or if she has
10:48 pm
predeceased michael jackson that 40 percent goes into the children's trust. >> so the children get it regardless of what katherine does now? >> absolutely. >> the only thing the older siblings could have been maneuvering to get is mom giving them money with the settlement you suggested earlier? >> the settlement or if catherine jackson as a guardian for her they would be given oo salary under california law. >> mark geragos do you think -- i know you are being calm and political and i know you represent represented michael jackson. i know you are an ace attorney. don't you think in some circumstances what happened here would demand a grand jury probe, would demand an investigation by authorities looking into whether or not a potential crime has been committed? >> no, wbecause as some people
10:49 pm
often said probate court by family court is a -- if you open add grand jury every time someone sthaut there was a nefarious motive in family law court you won't have enough grand jurors in los angeles. i don't think so. i think it's over blown. i understand you can attribute or ascribe all kinds of motives to the people involved. but when i was around them i thought the family was incredibly loving and like some families some what dysfunction ality. i don't know what family isn't. i don't see it as sinister or in such a sinister way. >> i think you are being much too benign. tenay last word. 30 seconds to tell us about your own aspirations? >> my own aspirations or my music or the situation? >> whatever. your time.

10:55 pm
information about what kind of gun or guns were used in this particular shooting except to say there were two recovered from the scene one to be assumed to be an officer's gun and won the gunman's gun. what officials have said so far from the justice department producer is this gunman was in his 40s and veteran of the u.s. army. we know he has military training and in his 40s. as far as the investigation is concerned. what police have said is that the first two officers arrived on the scene. the first wounded while attending to someone who was shot themselves and the second who exchanged gun fire with the gunman ultimately killing them prevented a larger tragedy at the temple had it not been for the two police officers.
10:56 pm
the timing was off if his goal was to create as much mayhem and death as possible he arrives a liter bit early. >> gunman came earlier than what most people come. i think relative damages were some what limited. if it had happened an hour or two later god knows how many people would be hurt or dead. i don't even want to think about it shlgs to , to be honest. >> mike levine is -- excuse me. go ahead, buddy. >> but certainly the killing of 6 is certainly nothing small. but this could have been a lot worse. >> steve, the guy is former army in his 40s. this could be another hate crime, could it not? i mean it is not a kocon gant o
