>> it's a real nail biter, there is a sus tim that is there on the planet we're awaiting 14 minutes of radio delay. to get signals back to tell us whether this is being put down on the surface, we're hearing signals to indicate whether each step is been going properly. when we get the final step that it's sitting on mars we'll know it goes for a five-year plus mission. >> and this would only be a success if it's transmitting information in the right place. seems like there is so much they have to get right. what happens if it isn't in the right place. >> there is feed back. >> tom i'm going to talk to nasa tv live broadcasting from

filled with water, a lake on mars. chemical conditions, billions of years ago may have been correct for origin of live to have occurred there. >> and this is just amazing. so what we haven't seen pictures yet. and what can you tell us about what we might see? >> there is on the belly just above the wheels is a camera, a set taking images of the dirt below touchdown point. so the size of a mini cooper will be looking at grounds and we'll see a small image just confirming that they're on the surface, we'll get a gray and blurry image in the next few minutes up to about two hours from now depending on how the relay comes confirmation original images are coming back safely through the relay satellite. >> this is very long coming

for the cruise working on this. and now, curiosity does end up finding water or signs of live how significant would that be? and there is a first image from the landing itself. if they do find live what did that mean for us? >> this is not the actual job of the rover. they're looking for traces of climate and chemical traces that life night be there. and once discovering evidence it's going to change our idea of live on earth that will have arisen somewhere else telling us there could be millions of planets that could post life as well as finding our place in the universe. that he wills us about chances of finding other intelligent

civil saigs down there. >> and they'd talked about the fact they said we've got to win or if we lose that is going to be a big problem. so what can you tell us about that? >> this is a do or die moment this, has been in development for 10 years and this is, had it failed it would have left a vast vacuum. there would have been no funds for a follow up z there would have been a trenchman in the ability tochl plor mars or getting up an ability to lead that in the future, this is defers those questions for at least a few years and nasa has to makeup the find about whether we want to continue this program for scale back.

>> and we're talking about finding other signs of live and other test down things like ice. and there is something like as you were saying would be very significant. and it may be in the fewer tour if the planet heats up possibility there would be live again? >> this is probably like life on earth. this may be surviving there, today. and so this rover has a small drill and can find tracers of live f we find conditions were live that would indicate need

fr a roll up mission this, is going to be the big draw to get to the bottom of the questions of life on mars. maybe a drill rig team can drill bee will he the surface to look for microbes. so this is going to call for a follow up. we don't know answers yet. they will be interesting and perhaps will open up a draw for human exploration of mars. >> probably sounds like something from a science fiction movie that you ca can -- someone half human exploring mars. how far off that would that be? they need to find signs of live and this is expected to be followed up by a return sample mission for analysis here. that is taking place there are

astronauts putting their home work to bridge this goal of 35 million miles between earth and miles. by to 40 we might be ready to send human explorers there. that is many, many small steps and this is trying to build up capabilities for survival and existing on the surface using resources that is already there. >> for anyone just tuning this in, this is a very expensive mission. there is a lot riding on it. can you tell us what this means for the future of mars exploration? and planetary exploration? >> this is two and a half billion dollars.

and had it failed it would have been time to look and see whether it could manage these missions successfully. and this means there is a new capability looking for past traces of life on mars. shows the u.s. can put down a lender like this. and so this does remain for us and for nasa to show whether or not we intend to continue and follow up with future robot scouts and intention of people there for good this, is one of the major questions of the 21 century. and i want to talk about once again, what amazing this was for the rover to land. everything had to happen exactly at the right moment and different thing koz have gone wrong and explain how

they were able to pull this off? >> this is amazing and astonishing. we're seeing gray images showing the dirt so what happened here is that it was launched to mars and cruised to mars for eight to nine months. and there is before touchdown everything worked mazingly. this first time it was tried this is just one time. have you to hand to it this team and scientists. i can only imagine release after drena lynn and satisfaction going on now. >> and what -- the fact that this went very well, and again we saw how happy crews were. how is this going to affect our exploration?

that we're considering and now will be able to get funds needed to do that? >> this is a great question. and there is a 20% cut in next year's budget. this, i hope will inspire the public cause interest in nasa mars and other missions and maybe they can marshal this support to follow up in a level with mars exploration and perhaps to the moon so human explorers can follow up these kinds of discoveries. >> and thank you so much for being with us. you have been watching special coverage of the space rover curiosity's landing on mars which we now know was a success. we'll take you back to "geraldo at large" right after the break.

information about what kind of gun or guns were used in this particular shooting except to say there were two recovered from the scene one to be assumed to be an officer's gun and won the gunman's gun. what officials have said so far from the justice department producer is this gunman was in his 40s and veteran of the u.s. army. we know he has military training and in his 40s. as far as the investigation is concerned. what police have said is that the first two officers arrived on the scene. the first wounded while attending to someone who was shot themselves and the second who exchanged gun fire with the gunman ultimately killing them prevented a larger tragedy at the temple had it not been for the two police officers.
