8:00 pm
that's why your best shot is to check for a spot. it's easy -- follow through and check your skin. yeah! it could be the save of a lifetime. go to spotskincancer.org to find out how. a message from the american academy of dermatology. >> laura: "the o'reilly factor" is on tonight. >> romney pay 10% in taxes, 5%, 0? we don't know. >> laura: another vicious ad from the obama campaign. this time accusing mitt romney attacks bound toes. backfire? we'll debate it. >> the other side will be spending more money than we've ever seen. you guy got these guys writing $10 million checks, you got these super pacs that are just going crazy. >> laura: after so many unfair and vicious attack ads against mitt romney, the president now says it's the conservative super pacs that are going crazy.
8:01 pm
we'll examine the outrageous hypocrisy. >> i work six days a week every day for four years for a 12-second race. the fact that they just tore me apart, it was just heart breaking. >> laura: olympic track star lolo jones gets emotional after the "new york times" accuses her of caring more about her image than her athletic performance. >> i don't think i should be ripped apart by media. >> laura: caution. you are about to enter the no spin zone and "the factor" begins right now. >> laura: hello, everyone. i'm laura ingraham in for bill o'reilly. thanks for watching us tonight. what mitt romney has to do to turn his campaign around. that's a summing of this evening's talking points memo. i realize that some of you won't like hearing this, but if the election were held today, romney would probably lose.
8:02 pm
two surveys released within hours of each other by cnn and fox reported obama up by 7 and 9 points respectively. the swing state story is not a good one either. the real clear politics average has obama up 7 in pennsylvania, five in ohio, and three in virginia. obama leads by slim margins in florida and colorado. so is unemployment still above 8% and two-thirds of the country thinking we're going in the wrong direction, how on earth is obama still ahead? is every poll other than rasmussen flawed or biased? first reason, negative ads and romney brand management. just about every week this summer, democrats have launched a new attack against romney. and by august, they stereotyped him as a tax dodge, cancer causing, outsourcing, 1950s acristocrat. he spent a lot of time raising money and that's important. but he has not launched the type
8:03 pm
of aggressive messaging and counter offensive that is necessary to beat the campaign. the obama team throws a knife and romney he's family tosses a pillow. an effective response team would have nailed obama on a cancer ad. i would have said a he a you will getting sick, sick of this poisonous style of campaigning and sick of politicians like obama who blame others for their failed policies and broken promises. instead, romney spokeswoman responded by laing universal healthcare in massachusetts. terrible! when obama scored with that romneyhood line, the best romney's communication team could come up with is obamaloney. really? conservatives are worried for a reason. they've seen this movie before and they know how it ends. in defeat. romney's team should be going into the republican national convention seven points up. not down. he must regain this lost ground
8:04 pm
over the next few weeks and he shouldn't rely on his vp pick to help much. this is his to win or lose. poinin tomorrow morning kicking off the bus tour, romney will unveil his running mate. all signs have pointed to the likelihood of paul ryan the running mate. the congressman from wisconsin, house budget chairman whous
8:05 pm
budget chairman excited republicans and made a commitment by the fwop to a balanced budget to reducing the debt to shrinking the signs of government and writing the economy. if there are others who could be, we don't know for certain it's paul ryan, tomorrow morning at 7:00 at romney headquarters mr. romney called all hands on deck to prepare for this announcement. if it's not paul ryan there is a possibility there are other of those, bob mcdon qlal qlald -- mcdonald. in addition marco rubio has been a prominent pick on the route he's been doing for weeks and later in the trip they'll wrap it up in ohio. and mr. romney told us whoever
8:06 pm
is speaking in august was not necessarily qualify them for being picked as a nominee. and those accompanying him on the bus trip would not necessarily qualify or disqualify them of the it appears paul ryan in wisconsin we won't know until tomorrow morning but mitt romney will let the nation know as he kicks off this bus tour. a fox tour exclusive, romney will be announcing his running mate tomorrow morning 9:00 a.m. norfolk, virginia. >> carl you're breaking up there just a little bit. i want to stay with you for just a moment. paul ryan is leaving for vacation with his family at this point. >> that is right. virtually his life, mr. ryan has been vacationing at this time of the year in colorado. those plans have been made some many weeks, months and years in tradition, before. but should it be paul ryan and
8:07 pm
he'll answer the call by coming to the uss wisconsin. in norfolk, tomorrow, on the other hand one cannot rule out the possibility of a slide. mitt romney is known for cautious assessment of assets and liabilities he's one willing to do what is necessary to win. and time and again has shown what krumpbl time has come, he's been able to step up to meet the challenge. and this vice presidential nominee could be someone who hasn't been prominently featured. and as custom yairy for process at every juncture there is a tremendous amount of scrutiny of information that has to be done in order to be accurate and not be fooled by the tv. we know it will come at the outset we'll see who that republican nominee s signs all
8:08 pm
over the country republicans are galvanizing behind the possibility of a ryan pick, however, until such time it is confirmed by the campaign, we won't know until tomorrow morning. >> and carl, you're so in the thick of this and ryan has been called a risky pick. you talked about that. talk about timing. here we are still, you know a few weeks out from the convention. and conventional wisdom maybe he's going to ride this wave out a little bit more and what do you think about the timing of this? >> romney said he might go earlier than tradition. since 1980 virtually all but one vice president pick has been announced within four days of the republican or democratic convention. the exception was john edwards in 2004. we're now about two and a half weeks before the convention. this is particularly early.
8:09 pm
it gives romney an opportunity to introduce and create a new buzz with his running mate then ride that wave into the convention, they hope. and the background briefing in boston staffers told us they believe combination of the running mate and the convention could give romney an 11 point bounce in the polls. a surge heading into fall. as we know, labor day tends to be the moment where the nation tunes into politics particularly the presidential campaign. romney has timed this for a crescendo landing on labor day at the republican convection hoping to build as much momentum for his ticket. he said over and over again, he wants to have a running mate to step into the job immediately necessary, someone who speaks to his vision and commit tomt a new economic and budge dairy frug yalt in america's future, be that paul ryan or any of the other prospects, a short list between three of five for many days now. tomorrow we'll find out at 9:00.
8:10 pm
it's the beginning of the push. this is the most important decision any candidate can make. as a would be president the only presidential decision they can make before being elected is is who would be their successor? it tells us about what the approach will be, what he thinks are the important principals embodied by running mates, we'll find out tomorrow, paul ryan, marco rubio? even bob mcdonald. all names we've been focused on, we'll find out in the morning and it appears romney is looking to extend this for the most possible influence, most bump possible. there has been a handful of polls suggested he's lost a little bit of ground in the polls. the campaign disputes that and says it's prelabor day and not important. they note tracking polls do not show mr. obama pushed up to an edge. and there is an indication before the weekend out there is going to be time.
8:11 pm
so here we are two and a half weeks before the republican convention, mitt romney tomorrow morning in virginia with announcement of his running mate. >> right. it's anticipation building for this huge, huge announcement. let's play with this just a moment. ryan, 42 years old, very young, which adds youthful vigor to this ticket. >> absolutely. he went into congress at 28 years old. but that means foremost part, since getting out of college, he's been working for the government and politics. he's chairmanship of the house budget committee is historic, his ability to craft a budge twroit cut spending, shrink the size of government, balance the budget and bring down deficits and national debt was a rallying cry for republicans in 2010 mid terms and has been a touch stone of the approach to budgeting republicans think government needs and barack obama has
8:12 pm
been sorely lacking in. paul ryan ready to come forward which has to now make a bit of a pivot. he'll have to acknowledge his legislation didn't pass the democratic controlled senate wasn't going to be signed by the democratic president. democrats may want to try to beat him up for more strict and conservative aspect owes to his lenl slailgs slailgs, -- legislation he will now have to say that came out of the house of representatives but now he's committed to the romney agenda. as the remainder of the campaign plays out. >> if you're just joining us now we're showing this video of paul ryan, we're talking about the overall vp pick for mitt romney expecting this around 9:00. we're talking with our chief political correspondentent. carl, since the beginning mitt romney beginning this bus tour he was -- you would think this
8:13 pm
vp pick would join him on this bus tour. you're seeing any indication of that? >> yeah. we expect it to go now across the country. four states they'll be visiting over four days tomorrow in virginia, then north carolina, then florida and ohio. then one can assume the running mate and the candidate will at some point split off. first campaign together, we'll see two of them on stage, we'll see how this plays out then probably split off and campaign together. not a guarantee it's paul ryanful but there are indications it will be him. we'll find out who, tomorrow, we know it will be at 9:00 tomorrow in norfolk. >> carl cameron breaking us in tonight and getting us ready for breaking news for mitt romney's running mate choice tomorrow morning. carl cameron, thank you very much. we're going to join our owe rileo factor now, already in progress. fizzled out, the obama campaign turned its attention back to mitt romney's personal tax returns. >> was there ever any year when
8:14 pm
you paid lower than the 13.9%? >> i haven't calculated that. i'm happy to go back and look. >> did romney pay 10%, 5%? 0? we don't know. but we know personally approved over $70 million in fictional losses to the irs as part of the notorious summit boss tax scandal, one of the largest tax avoidance schemes in history. isn't it time for romney to come clean? >> laura: governor romney has already released two years of tax returns. and just days after president obama's super pac implied mitt romney was a cold hearted killer, mr. obama said this. >> over the next three months, 89 days to be precise, the other side will be spending more money than we've ever seen. you got these guys writing $10 million checks. you've got these super pacs that are just going crazy.
8:15 pm
>> laura: don't look at me about super pacs. really, mr. president? today the romney campaign hit back. >> what does it say about a president's character when his campaign tries to use the tragedy of a woman's death for political gain? what does it say about a president's character when he had his campaign raise money for the ad, then stood by as his top aides were caught lying about it? doesn't america deserve better than a president who will say or do anything to stay in power? i'm mitt romney and i approved this message. >> laura: joining us now from new york, kathy, a contribute be editor for the "washington post" magazine and christopher, professor at georgetown university. okay. i'm going to start with you, kathy, because we seem to have moved off, far off into the distance from president hope and change, where we were going to change the tone in washington.
8:16 pm
we were going to part the ocean. we were going to bring the races together. it seems to me that this campaign has started off very cynically and nasty. >> i think that he wanted to have the hope and change and i think that's the message he wanted to give. but because the other side has been so nasty and has gotten so dirty, they've had to fight back. it's fire with fire. and they are simply stating facts. i don't think the obama campaign has done anything wrong. i think they're doing exactly -- >> laura: you like that super pac ad -- oh, no, he doesn't control the super pac. they didn't know anything about it. >> he had nothing to too with that ad. but it is factual. >> laura: so first of all, i think kathy, what happens and christopher, you can jump in here, what happens is this all becomes white noise to some extent to the voters because they see this and goes mitt romney caused this guy's wife to die and then turns out the guy was on a conference call with the obama campaign, right, they knew his story pretty much and are denying it. it just all smacks of an
8:17 pm
unserious approach to these really serious problems facing america. >> yeah, it does. and i think this campaign on the behalf of the president can be described as lies, lies, and damn lies. from the perspective of these ads, there are a couple of things we're seeing here. mr. hope and change realizes that, in fact, he has changed nothing. he has a dismal economic record, unemployment is high. he's blaming a bush is not work. what does he resort to? he resorts to being led by harry reid? i'm sorry. boss style politics. oh, what, as in chicago boss style politics? yeah. they should know quite a bit about that. and in this particular case, he is hypocrite in chief rather than commander in chief. these ads are absolutely ridiculous. they're lies, they're based in nothing but conjecture and using harry reid's approach here, it's up to them to prove otherwise. >> laura: well, i think what happens is when you have someone like reid on the senate floor
8:18 pm
and he's best -- his best argument for this president is, well, word is out that mitt romney hasn't paid taxes. i mean, kathy, you're a good person, i think. >> thank you. >> laura: you probably in your life don't do that to other people. well, word's out that he beats his wife. or word's out that -- word's out? that's something do you when you're in 7th grade. it seems so unserious. immature and cynical. >> but it is possible. it is possible that harry reid is right. that romney did not pay taxes. we don't know. >> laura: kathy. >> he did not pay taxes. you're repeating something on national television -- >> it's possible. >> laura: you just say it is true, romney did not pay tax. >> i'm sorry. >> laura: you're doing the same dirty work that harry reid was. i'm going to have to withdraw my comment what a great person you are. come on, you're better tat. >> come on. it is true. it is possible he did not pay -- >> laura: okay. >> we don't know. >> laura: by that argument, it is possible that mitt romney --
8:19 pm
i'm going to make -- barak obama applied to colombia university as a foreign exchange student. it is possible. it's possible. we don't have the records. it is possible he failed eci 101, it's possible. he didn't release his grades. it's ridiculous. >> we have a man here who is trying to say he is going to be of the people, he understands the people. but this is a guy who may not have paid taxes while the majority of us taxpayers would hate to know that. that you're going to elect someone who will not release their taxes. >> laura: kathy, tonight on the o'reilley, you'll urge the president to release his college records, travel records, will you call for that? >> sure. i'm sure he has nothing to hide. >> laura: okay. why won't he release his records? you see how this game goes when you start playing that game? chris, you're getting short tripped here. you can close it out. >> yeah. so in this particular case, what's going on is, yeah, all of these things are possible. the fact of the matter is, i don't care whether mitt romney
8:20 pm
releases his tax records or not. what i care about is how am i going to feed my family? i care about the fact that this election is all of the issues that we're supposed to talk about, we're not talking about them because we're talk being silly distraction, lies, lies, and damn lies. >> laura: i want to say, kathy and christopher, it's possible that america won't survive another obama term. it's possible. i'm going to do my entire show. it's possible. kathy, great to see you and chris great to see you. ahead, charges of unseemly voter registration efforts in massachusetts involving welfare recipients and elizabeth warren's campaign. and prices at the pump are rising. rising. how is this going to affect the you'll inevitably find yourself on aolate highway in your jeep grand cherokee. and when you do, you'll be grateful for the adaptive cruise control that automatically adjusts your speed when approaching slower traffic.
8:21 pm
and for the blind spot monitoring that helps remind you that the highway might not be as desolate... ...as you thought. ♪ questions. when you're caring for a loved one with alzheimer's, not a day goes by that you don't have them. questions about treatment where to go for extra help, how to live better with the disease. so many questions, where do you start? alzheimers.gov. the answers start here.
8:22 pm
8:23 pm
>> laura: in the unresolved
8:24 pm
problem segment, accusations that massachusetts taxpayer dollars are being used to prop up elizabeth warren's senate campaign? warren's rival senator scott brown says a new voter registration drive targeting welfare recipients is really designed to help warren. it turns out warren's daughter, stay with me -- amelia, is the co-chairman of the group that sued for this registration push. and demos declined our invitation to appear on the program tonight. they usually join us, so that was a bit surprising. with us now is emily, executive director of young democrats of america. all right, emily. let's explain this to the listeners, to the viewers now. this was a lawsuit brought against massachusetts to try to open up voter registration, which sounds noble. i think the question here is the typing of this because military recruitment station, you get voter registration forms. but this is direct mailings to welfare recipients.
8:25 pm
not from the voting bureau in massachusetts, but coming from the same bureau that sends them their edt cards, those food stamp cards basically. i have a little bit of an issue with that? doesn't that seem to be a little too convenient? >> first of all, thank you for having me on. i think that we should look at the context for this and how it came about. this is the national voter registration act from 1993. almost 20 years old. so this was the -- the lawsuit was enforcing that law. so the most common piece of it, motor voter law, really saying that people should be able to feel they have more access to voter registration. the other piece is that people who are not as likely to go to the dmv will have access to it if they have -- if they're recipients of state aid. massachusetts was not properly enforcing that. so demos went into the field and started calling around in february of 2001 and they we want into the field looking into it in may -- sorry, of 2011, and they started going into the fields in may of 2011.
8:26 pm
so i don't know the timing is all that suspicious. >> laura: it is a critical senate seat. scott brown won this in a surprise victory. it almost toppled the obamacare deal for obama because no one thought they were going to lose that senate seat. he wins it and then we have the added angle of elizabeth warren's daughter chairing the group that is representing the plaintiffs in this case. >> demos is in 18 states since 2004. if we're talking about they're only going into targeted places, one of the states they were in mississippi. >> laura: another little connection, though -- again, this is interesting, is that the governor of massachusetts' wife is a partner at the very law firm, ropes and gray, which is representing the plaintiff. so there is no reason for people to think, gosh, this is all a little convenient? aside from that, this is a state that has 1 point -- i believe the budget deficit -- is $1.3 billion this year. and the outstanding debt of the
8:27 pm
state is $16.7 billion. this is going to cost a couple hundred thousands for this thing to be carried out. why should the taxpayers foot the bill here? >> i think is definitely a lesson in the fact that states should be following the law. this was the deal that was worked out between demos and a number of other groups in the lawsuit and the state. so they didn't have to go to a full federal trial. i think that the state, if they had been following the law from the beginning, then they wouldn't have this problem. >> laura: why do you think most of the folks on welfare vote democrat? >> i think -- >> laura: overwhelming majority, why do you think? >> i think the breakdown in the country, when we look at -- >> laura: they get free stuff, right? come on. it's like vote for me, i'll give you stuff for free. obama, biden 2012. you get free stuff, you vote for the democrats 'cause they're always going to outdo the democrats. >> i represent young people. i know young people are look for college tuition deals and they want to be able to stay on their
8:28 pm
parents' health care. >> we do want young people to be able to -- >> laura: frisbees to everyone. you think that birth control pill thing is a real winner for young people and that's going to really -- >> i really do. i think young people are very much looking for birth control. they want. >> laura: they are? how many of these people want the free birth control, go to starbucks on a regular basis? you add the $4 latees up, that pretty much eclipses the 8 bucks for the birth control fills. they got their cell phone contracts, but i can't pay for my birth control pills. it seems silly. >> by preventing unwanted pregnancies. >> laura: i have three of them. dollars and cents, it's not abt life. great to see you. thanks for being with us. plenty more ahead. gas prices going up again. will the pain at the pump hurt president obama? we'll talk about it. and later, the prosecutors in the george zimmerman trial made a huge mistake and geraldo is

8:32 pm
this is a fox news alert. fox news just confirmed republican presidential candidate mitt romney will announce his vice presidential running mate tomorrow morning at 9:00. the announcement will be made in norfolk, virginia. we have
8:33 pm
carl cameron on the phone breaking this news for us this evening. he's in boston. carl, are you there? >> i am. yes. we're in boston but rapidly heading to norfolk, virginia for unveiling of mitt romney's running mate, it will be revealed to the country. two weeks and three days in advance of the republican national convention in tampa. earlier pick than is tradition nchl most cases going back to the early 1980s, most vice presidential nominees picked within four days of the convention and a couple cases picked at the convention, mitt romney by making this selection tomorrow will be early and giving him an opportunity to get across the country. all indications, tremendous amount of buzz spinning around republican circles indicating
8:34 pm
paul ryan from wisconsin will be the nominee. mr. romney and the congressman have illustrated a tremendous amount of chemistry on the campaign stage together. ryan is well known, the house passed budget with its dramatic spending reduction atestimonies to shrink the size of bloated government with its sweeping medicare reforms has become a touch stone of republican conservatism over the years, should mitt romney decide to pick paul ryan it will be a clear that romney is committed as he's been saying to balancing the nation's budge writ by the end of 10 years, reducing government, cutting taxes, cutting spending and causing the country to live within its means in an attempts to bring down the debt that the administration faces. ryan has not been confirmed at this point.
8:35 pm
we won't know until probably tomorrow horning. the campaign has been sworn to silence on all of this showing discipline of the team they have held things very los to the vest. only two people involved in conversations ann romney and mitt romney. the third, beth myers the woman who has been i long time aid to mitt rom nee. beth myers led the search committee. she's cut her teeth in american politics years ago in texas alongside karl rove. the romney campaign said that they would conduct a very long, very intense vet prog ses that would be unprecedented in the depth it would go to ensure they'd pick the right person for the job. and there is a lot of unthese yachl.
8:36 pm
because the buzz has gotten so pronounced there is a possibility that any selection other than him might disappoint some conservatives concerned that rob portman, tim pawlenty, capable wex peer yens in government may not bring the type of chemistry that the romney ticket might need. there is marco rubio, florida u.s. senator who could help with hispanics across the country, coming from the important swing state of florida. ruby yoe would be exactly the type of spark romney might need in order to not only court latinos maiblging up a key, growing coalition but also to win a very important state and to inject a new set of enthusiasm and begin to change the face of the republican party by courting latinos with that pick. mr. rubio the son of cuban american immigrants with a very, very colorful life story
8:37 pm
capturing mags nation of conservatives and liberals. no confirmation it's paul ryan. there will be an announcement on mitt romney's app called mitt's vp. he revealed that to us, first on our trip to europe. he said that is how he intended to name the nominee. we expect that tomorrow morning at 9:00 in norfolk, virginia. whoever the pick is will walk out on stage with mitt romney. >> that is interesting. and we talked about timing on several issues, paul ryan going on vacation with his family. here we are the night before mitt romney begins swing state going through 12 cities in four key swing states and that is what do you read into that? >> well, paul ryan vacation is
8:38 pm
something that has been a family tradition going back a generation. one presumes if he's the pick he'll immediately be, have made arrangements to be in norfolk in the morning. there have been reports of all kinds of activities in jamesville, mr. ryan's hometown, to suggest there was something up across the country republicans have been talking about this. assembly talking points, touting strengths of the candidate. democrats have put out a portfolio on paul ryan trying to knock him down in advance and have begun soliciting more information to begin to tackle him. there will be a vice presidential debate in which the nominee will go opposite. all of this has been gamed out not just for mr. ryan but a variety of other candidates. the number of plans the campaign put together for a variety of possible picks have
8:39 pm
will focus on the one person that will step out in the morning. perhaps all of the attention of paul ryan is to throw people off or perhaps a marco rubo or someone else. until such time as we see it all we can do is judge the tea leaves, take a look at signals that seem to point toward ryan, mitt romney calculated this a long time. most of his life has been spent planning for this moment. the amount of scrutiny, and intense deliberation is hard to describe. it's been years in the making and months in the planning and now, final hours of the execution are very, very delicate dance. the catch yain wants this to be an exciting and important momentum builder. today, in a closed door
8:40 pm
meeting that was on the record they told us to be worth a double digit bounce in the polls for mitt romney. that is not uncommon for the announcement but in this very tight race, where the margin between mitt romney and barack obama has seldom gotten more than six points all year, the idea running mate and convention could boost romney by 11 points speaks to the confidence of the romney campaign and staffers their pick will be an exciting one that will energize the nation and signal to moderates that the republican nominee and running mate are serious about tackling big challenges. as if the campaign has been criticized for name calling and nasty attacks but brings paul ryan on to the ticket and potential of signaling for, to
8:41 pm
the voters mitt romney is going to try to rise above witness someone perhaps he was referring to when he said he wanted his pick to show vision and talk about taking the country in a new direction. >> carl just less than three weeks now until we go to tampa for the republican national convention this is an anticipate add announcement. the buzz has been building so long. are you surprised this announcement is going to be made quickly before we get to tampa? for the convention? >> knox the campaign has been forth coming with trying to signal as best they can the process they intend to have play out. now, we're told repeatedly that there was not an announcement until after the convention and after the bus tour was over. and we're told apparently accurately there would not be an announcement until olympics were over and indeed, the olympics are ending this weekend. and so the announcement is at the outset of the bus tour, perhaps there is a little bit of head shaking going on there
8:42 pm
by the campaign in order to build a surprise ask keep reporters off balance. nothing new about that in politics and keeping a surprise is something that is very custom yairy. >> we're talking about paul ryan. the seven term congressman. mitt romney praised his budget and describing it as marvelous. you talked about them being on the campaign trail together how they energize the crowd. chemistry between those two. >> indeed. and romney signed on aggressively to the ryan budget when others were cautious. and newt gingrich refered to it as right swing social engineering suggesting he didn't agree with that aspect of the paul ryan budget. mitt romney whole heartedly embraced it said it was just the type approach, bold approach with big ideas tackling very, very difficult,
8:43 pm
deeply entrenched problems in our country it would be necessary to take sweeping steps. romney minced no words and jumped on early. it would be a bold move to bring ryan on into the campaign. in so far as there are a lot of democrat goesing to argue his plan for medicare reform would do away with medicare. could be risky business in key states like florida and arizona, states with large populations of seniors. democrats would be eager to attack that. watch ryan say he stands by principals of the ryan budget but begins to promise that he will be backing the romney ajebda and bring principal principals -- principles to the ryan campaign. it's about passing romney agenda by electing the president. >> if you're just joining us you're seeing a lot of video here of paul ryan. we're talking with our chief political kpontd correspondent.
8:44 pm
carl we've got to talk about there is so much focus on rob portman from ohio. and there is a ohio, crucial as well you cut out there a little bit. can you repeat the question? >> i know you've got to get on a flight to get to virginia in the morning. we're talking to carl cameron here, just asking you there is rob portman of ohio a critical, must win state. >> there is ohio state no republican ever lost that has been able to win the presidency. it's suggested you need to win the buck eye state f paul ryan were the nominee he would presumably help court conservative voters and moderate swing voters who want to see the budget and size of government slung. paul would all of the blames
8:45 pm
scrutinized and researched by the campaign. mitt are many knee's decision is one he spent tremendous amounts of time contestimony mating. the process unfolding between himself and search committee head beth myers involved his wife ann romney. both said to me time and time again they talked about this daily and to the extent he had the best interests of her husband. we know mitt romney and paul ryan on the campaign trail both increased one another's energy. and it was fun watching them on the campaign trail. it was very clear they were on the verge of learning how to fib finish one another's jentss and enthuse yachl is something rarely seen with mitt romney. >> so we get the announcement

barack obama when he announced his running mate. by the end of the convention walking out of the convention at this point in minnesota and he had a lead. and that lead was the same fr a couple weeks. just expecting they can get an 11 point bound bounce out of the combination of the vice presidential roll out and. >> as we talk to you we're putting up choices here. and there is where you've talk to these candidates. i've spoken with them out at debates. beach has appeal. they have important states and they have rob portman. >> fundamental rule has been do no harm. find someone amp ply strengths

but not shine a light on weaknesses or create problems. the romney campaign has been looking for that. there is a cautious list and very, very well known republican politician. all of whom had been in the public eye campaigning as sur investigates for romney. they've been on the trail together. they're being introduced for months and there is robby jindal known up and comer in republican politics, very conservative, very, very bright. and condoleezza rice, secretary of state, national security advisor a tremendously capable bright woman said she didn't want to do the job got people very, very excited about it. there is no doubt people showed strength and talent of the republican party.

that's time after time after time have been the most decisive for the american voters. and in this case, tomorrow morning in norfolk. >> you've been tight with the ramp yains but this romney campaign held their cards close to the vest on this. >> oh, sure. that is part of the attempt to bimd as much buzz as possible. the more mystery, the more curiosity. romney has done a good job. we have to say across the country in republican circles, there is a real alignment behind paul ryan. its clear that conservatives are interested in him. they're enthusiastic and they would like to have a bold running mate on the romney ticket. ryan budget as cast in the past year and a half is one
8:52 pm
that places conservatives in the country. >> right. take a look at the ryan budget. it doesn't include tax increases and mitt romney is praised that budget. this is taking taxes, again to the for front and in terms of the president obama campaign who do you think they don't want to see? >> the ryan budget is a dramatic piece of legislation that died in the house. the president was never going to sign it. and that is no confirmation kmoint. this is based upon speculation and wishful thinking from republicans. but there is a huge contingent think that tim pawlenty,

national co-chairman of the romney campaign dropped out of the race last year is a favorite. and loved by the campaign for work he did from the moment he became one of the active surrogates in the country. and rob portman shown himself to be a capable official, someone who cares a great deal in which the way american legislation and laws get passed in time. he's been a lng time candidate in government. he's a very, very capable guy, someone mitt romney respects. and they were the type of people complement mitt romney who believe in his candidacy but have acknowledged that romney experience as a businessman and a governor which is executive expeer

skbrens very important it's in, and puts him, with the type of experience and san fi necessary to deal with these tough, tough problems. for many months the american people have been suggesting to attack politics and we've seen polls and i hear it all the time. american people are not stupid. they want to hear solutions not name calling. this campaign has been about that and there is up with thing they're going to express is not going to be about name calling but creating jobs. raising take home pay, putting people back to work. >> and if you're just joining us we're speaking with carl cameron. stay with us we want to continue talking about this. carl? we put you on hold we have bret baier joining us now.

bret are you there? >> we've been speaking to carl cameron. talk about what we're expecting to hear tomorrow morning. >> well, i know carl has done a great job of getting ahead of this on the announcement and obviously everybody was shocked it's going to happen on saturday morning. when it first, we first learned of it. and in virginia a big swing state. and on board uss wisconsin. as carl reported signs pointing to paul ryan. i think what is amazing about this is that the buzz that paul ryan kind of generated in conservative circles. in, on the "wall street journal" editorial page.
8:56 pm
and in weekly standard >> "think carl reiterated that owes the panel as well. when you look at this, how it lines up if it is ryan, this
8:57 pm
is going to be a fast made race. and one of the things that you just wonder how this plays out. is that mitt romney's pick. >> right. remind viewer that's we're watching some video of mitt romney and paul ryan together. we don't know that is the pick but just talking about this and reading tea leaves a little bit. romney praised ryan's budget. ryan is 42 years old. and bringing certainly a lot of youth and vigor to this campaign. >> he does. and you know he is kind of a budget whiz, elected to congress in is 998 in wisconsin. and he is someone who worked his way up and republican leaders in the house acknowledged early on he was
8:58 pm
very strong on the budget. and in fact he leap frogged more senior republicans on the house budget committee to become the youngest chairman ever of the house budget committee and that led to his proposal that got so much attention. and criticism from the left z frankly from the republican party afraid it went to have. now, i think there is a growing concensus that is the way they believe fighting on the issues of the day, dealing with the fiscal cliff the count story facing that they'd rather have that fight. if romney make that's choice tomorrow, for uss wisconsin,
8:59 pm
the race will be dichb and will be a lot different. and you can imagine the ads that are turning up. we saw them in new york 26 someone looking like paul ryan pushing an old lady over a cliff. its an effective ad but you wonder how much that affects some of the, like, i'm in florida currently. and arizona and other states. if it's paul ryan it's going to be a different race. >> right. and carl and i were talking about there is a possibility that we're talking about the short list. we talked about these in depth. you have done interview was all of the phone shall vp picks but there is a chance of what carl calls
