build that. [cheers and applause]. >> someone who knows first hand that all of these tax increases coming in our small businesses, all the band-aids from obamacare and dodd-frank, someone knowing that the choking red tape that is struggling and strangling and suffocating our success of small businesses is what is keeping us from creating jobs. it is what is keeping us from creating prosperity. this is a man who understands these things. this is a man who, when his country needed him, to save the u.s. olympics, it was a moment where the olympics were in doubt. it was bloated. it was wasteful. it was corrupted. that sound familiar, by the way? his country asked him to move to
7:31 am
salt lake, to turned it around and save the olympics and he did it and we are so proud of that moment. [cheers and applause]. >> the contrast could not be more clear. when he was governor of massachusetts, he balance aid budget without raising taxes. president obama just has given us budgets with no balance ever and a lot of new taxes. if president obama's economic policies of borrowing, taxing, and spending worked, we'd be entering a golden age along with greece. it doesn't work because it never worked. the engine of opportunity, the nucleus of our society is the small business, the family, the entrepreneur, not the government. [cheers and applause].
7:32 am
>> we know what this country was built on. we understand its principles. our rights, they come from nature and god, not from government. [cheers and applause]. >> this is a man who knows this, who believes it, who practices it. this is a man who, when he was governor of the unemployment rate. under barack obama, it has gone up. this is a man who, as governor of massachusetts, increased and improved the credit rating of massachusetts, under president obama's watch, for the first time in our history, the u.s. credit rating was downgraded. you could not have a better contrast than this. so we're going to offer to you our fellow citizens a choice. do you want the american idea
7:33 am
that opportunity of a safety net, a land of prosperity where you can make the most of your life, no matter who you are and where you come from, tap your potential or do we go with the status quo? do we go with the debt crisis, a welfare state, a nation in decline? we're not going to do that. you know why we're not going to do that? because north carolina is going to help make sure we don't do that, by electing mitt romney, the president of the united states. [cheers and applause]. >> thank you. thank you. [cheers and applause]. >> that's quite a guy. [cers and applause]. >> thank you. >> that's quite a guy, isn't he?
7:34 am
isn't that a terrific guy? [cheers and applause]. >> i'm so proud to have him on our team and to make sure we take back america. i'm... i have to tell you, also, just some personal things, i look back here at this card, i tell you, you see, as a boy, my dad made ramblers, all right? -- this car, as a boy my dad made ramblers and i only dreamed of cars like that, to have my name on a car like that, it is just too much, darrell, darrell thank you for putting my name on that car, there, wow. you see... [applause]. >> you see, it must have been tough for my girlfriend to be able to go out in that first date with me in that red rambler we had. and -- ann, come on up here, let's have the beautiful ladies, ann, janna, come up. [cheers and applause] .
7:35 am
>> hello, north carolina! [cheers and applause]. >> when we were driving in here and we saw how many people were here, and we saw how many people are outside, that couldn't get in here, i turned to mitt and i turned to paul and i said, do you see that? [cheers and applause]. >> i said, they are here because they get it. they know... [cheers and applause]. >> they know that america is in trouble. and, these they're two guys that are gonna save it. [cheers and applause].
7:36 am
>> so, it is a thrill to be here, it is a thrill to have this kind of enthusiasm and this kind of -- just boost that gives us such a fight and a determination to say we're not going to take it anymore. we are taking the white house back. [cheers and applause]. >> so, i don't think i want to give the mic up but i think i tter let him. anyway, we love you, we love america, and we're going to get it done. thank you. [cheers and applause]. >> those are terrific laeshgdz i'll tell you that.
7:37 am
-- terrific ladies, i'll tell you that. they are a lot better than their husbands. this is day two for me, this is day two on our come back tour to get america strong again, to rebuild the promise of america. [cheers and applause]. >> we're going to recapture something which some people have thought was lost. america has a spirit, an energy, a passion which has been the envy of the world, our entrepreneurs, our innovators, our young people, striving for achievement and success. they built the most powerful nation in the history of the earth. this is a great nation. i love america. we're going to restore american principles. [cheers and applause] [chanting "usa"].
7:38 am
>> this nation... this nation is facing critical challenges because of some choices that have been made, that weren't very good choices. some of those choices were made by republicans, even and a lot by democrats. we spent too much money, we spent money we didn't have. i think it's not just bad economics to do that. i think it is immoral for us to pass on burdens to the next generation. [cheers and applause]. >> and, in this critical time, one of the few that stood up and fought for principles and said, i have ideas to get america back on track is this person, i have chosen to be my running mate... [cheers and applause]. >> his career, his career ambition was not to go to washington. that is not what he wanted to do but he became concerned about what was happening in the country and wanted to get america back on track.
7:39 am
and, so he put aside the plans he had for his career and said, i'm going to go and serve and he's gone there, and, he's put the country and policies to get america right again, ahead of ambition. this is a person of character, a man of leadership, he became a leader and a man of sound character very early in his life. his dad passed away when he was in high school, and, the family rallied together, his mom and siblings and the community to support him and to support that family. it created a man who loves this country, loves his community, and understands that time is short. and, that this nation must be kept strong, so, he went to washington, and he went there and fought for ideas, and values and principles, not just for partisanship but for his view of america. and he was able to work across the aisle. an unusual character there, instead of throwing bricks and attacking and demonizing other people he recognized honest people can have honest differences and he work with
7:40 am
them and convinced them and has created change in washington at a ctiril time and so i have selected this man to be my running mate, because i want to change washington, and get america back on track. [cheers and applause]. >> now, i've got... i've got good news for you. and that is that this nation is going to come roaring back. [cheers and applause]. >> there are some who are fearful that if we stay on the trek we're on we'll end up like greece and we'll have like europe has, the chronic high unemployment, and the low wage growth and fiscal calamity right at the door. that is not the path we'll take us down. i see our president making us more and more like europe. i don't want to be like europe, i want to be like america. [cheers and applause].
7:41 am
>> the other day in virginia, the president said something i just couldn't believe he said it. it was so counter to the culture and character of the american spirit that i just couldn't imagine he said it. he said if you have a business you didn't do that, someone else did. and... [audience booing]. >>... and he said, well, you took me out of context and then look at the context. it's on youtube, you can see the whole speech, the context is worse than the quote. all right? he says, you know, if you are successful, and you think it is because you are smart, he says well a lot of people are smart and if you think it is because you are working hard, a lot of people work hard and i thought, where is he going with this. you see, in this country what
7:42 am
distinguished us from so many other nations is we have people who strive to fulfill their dreams, who have big dreams and have reached for the stars, and, as they do so, and as they are successful, it does not make us worse off. it makes us more successful as a nation. [cheers and applause] and that might be the person who in a place like this, this is the place that trains people with the skills they need to work at nascar and other parts of the automobile industry and people get more skills and as they get more skills they get promotion and as they get promotions they are able to help themselves and their families and by the way, lift the economy, and, people striving, they've built their career and promotion and deserve the credit and if a young person works hard, they make the honor roll and study and study, and, prepare for the exams and take those exams and tests and do
7:43 am
well and make the honor roll, now i know that to get to school they had to go on a bus and had to have a bus driver but if they get the honor roll i don't give the credit to the bus driver, i give it to the kid. [cheers and applause] . >> that's what... that's one of the things that makes america what it is. it is individuals with initiative and risk-taking and hard work and smarts, who reach, who dream. we're a nation of big-step,and we have much to accomplish and much to achieve and we do that in our homes, in our churches and communities and states and do it as a nation and do it in our businesses and that is what makes america the leader of the world. when the founders... the
7:44 am
founders helped craft this country, by writing the declaration of independence they chose their words carefully and they said our rights came not from government but from our creator, and, among them... [cheers and applause]. >> and among them, among them are life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. that last little phrase, by the way, the pursuit of happiness, that says that in this country, each person is free to pursue happiness as he or she wishes and that means the circumstance of birth will not prevent you from reaching. it means that whatever your station in life, you can work harder to see if you can achieve something more for yourself and for the people who come behind you, and, your success lifts the entire nation. that is what makes america go. individuals pursuing their dreams. it's not government that makes us great. it is the people of america. [cheers and applause].
7:45 am
>> now, we have a plan. five things we're going to do to get this economy come roaring back and get unemploymenten north carolina down from 9.4%. and start creating jobs here. it is a plan which will create, in four years, 12 million new jobs in america. [cheers and applause]. >> it has five parts, number one, we're going to take advantage of our energy resources in this country. [cheers and applause]. >> number 2, we're going -- number 2:we'll make sure that our workers and our kids have the skills they need to succeed, schools like this help train people with the skills they need to succeed and our schools
7:46 am
themselves, i'll tell you, our schools have to be the best in the world. not in the bottom quartile. >> we the how to do that. i won't go through all the policy but let me tell you this: it starts with a very clear recognition, that we put our kids and their parents and the teachers first, and the teachers union, they go behind. [cheers and applause]. >> number 3, number 3, we have to have trade that works for an america, it is good to trade with other nations, that helps a productive nation like us and helps boost wages and jobs but we can't trade with people if they cheat without consequence and have to be sure cheaters like china are held accountable. [cheers and applause]. >> we want to open up new markets for our goods in latin america and around the world
7:47 am
and, number 4... we're not going to restore this economy and have people take their life savings to start a business or invest in america, if they think that the dollar is going to become worthless and we'll become like greece and, therefore, we'll have to do something, washington has spoken about for years but not done and that is, we're going to have to cut the deficit and finally get us to a balanced budget. [cheers and applause]. >> and one more. energy, skills, trade, balanced budget, one more. and that is the: we have to champion small business in this country. we have to make sure that... we keep our taxes competitive and we keep our regulators encouraging business, not crushing them and we have to take out that big cloud, there is a big cloud that is hanging out over small business. small business people are very concerned about what is going to happen, come january. they are very concerned about something known as obamacare and
7:48 am
that is why we are going to repeal it and replace it. [cheers and applause]. >> we love... we love this country, this is a critical time in the country. this eleion is going to be a choice of two very different paths. a president who we currently have who thinks that a larger and larger government, more and more intrusive in our businesses, more and more intrusive in our lives, is the best way to go. look there air lot of liberals that thought that in the past and they think that, somehow, bureaucrats and smart people in washington can do a better job guiding our lives and guiding our enterprises than people and, i remember what ronald reagan said. you know what ronald reagan said about liberals? he said, it is not the liberals are ignorant, it is just that what they know is wrong. [cheers and applause].
7:49 am
>> but there is a very different path. a very different path that has been laid out by the founders from the very beginning of the country, it is the path which paul ryan and i want to take this nation down, it is not to change america, it is not to transform america, it is not to make america more like europe, it is instead to restore the principles of america that made us the hope of the earth. [cheers and applause]. >> we love this country. we love this country. we love america. we're going to do everything in our power to keep america strong, with strong families, and strong values, a strong economy, the strongest military in the world, we will restore american strength... [cheers and applause]. >> we love this country. we love you. thank you, north carolina! let's win this in november! thank you! [cheers and applause]. >> eric: mitt romney, having a
