the g.o.p. pair now pitching itself as america's comeback team. we have team coverage of the presidential contest. ed henry is standing by at the white house and carl cameron. he is the road with mitt romney and congressman ryan in the badger state that is where we will start. >> heather: we're starting where carl cameron is. you are there in wisconsin awaiting the home coming rally. how has the reaction been so far? >> big crowds and big enthusiasm. selection as a vice presidential running mate is already done. that was to turn the debate to the issues of balancing the budget will dealing with the government's fiscal pro problems and righting the economy. democrats are trying to say ryan's budgeted is too extreme. republicans are saying these are

exactly the issues that have to be faced and democrats should talk. huge crowds in north carolina. more than 89,000 in high point just a short time ago. mr. romney was clear in the type of rhetoric we heard from him for a better part of year. now with ryan on the ticket. listen to romney as he says balancing budget is a moral imperative. >> this nation is facing critical charges bus of choices that were made that weren't very good. some of those choices were made by republicans and lot by democrats. we spent too much money. we spent money we didn't have. i think it's not just bad economics to do that. i think it's immoral for us to pass our burdens to the next generation. >> reporter: republicans are counting on the idea the edition of paul ryan will inject new enthusiasm into the romney campaign and candidacy and underscore his assertion he will

deal with the federal government debt and get the economy back on track. >> heather: it sounds like they have lifted the silence how they kept a ryan choice a surprise? >> reporter: we got briefed yesterday. reporters got briefed by the campaign. we found out that in order to avoid getting discovered, paul ryan at one point took a plane in a baseball cap and t-shirt not to boston to meet mr. romney but to connecticut where beth myers his veep search son drove him into born so he wouldn't get detected. in order to get back too his house and not busted dealing with the possibility of dealing with the vice presidential pick. he had to cut through the woods in his house from reporters that had staked out his front yard. there had been a lot of rumors before the actual announcement.

they are took extreme lengths in order to keep it secret. they did it a saturday and sunday on the weekend. it doesn't seem as though they were trying to amplify it very much. as i said already the debate has shifted to the issues of the economy and balancing the federal budget. >> heather: i read a play by play through the process. it was stealth operation to say the least. >> kelly: president obama's team wrapping up their verbal attacks against romney's new running mate. ryan's policies would hurt medicare and the middle-class, as well. the president campaigning in his hometown of chicago today. you are looking at live at event. ed henry is live with more details about all this. how is the president reacting? >> reporter: the president so far has not said anything on this new romney-ryan ticket.

we'll be watching a fund-raiser in his hometown to see if he does weigh in. so far he has been letting his campaign team do the talking. you heard carl how the republicans are trying to brand the ticket as comeback team. obama is calling them counter programming, america's go back team in going backwards with their policies instead of forward which, of course, is the obama campaign motto. on the bottom line on the sunday talk shows, david axelrod were trying to paint paul ryan as a radical. >> to thrill the most strident voices in the republican party but it should trouble everybody else, middle-class, seniors, students because of ryan's record. he is a right wing i had log.

>> reporter: the romney campaign is not going to sit quietly. they know how much the obama campaign have attacked them and days at bain capital. there is chatter whether the obama campaign has been effective. if you look at national polls in defining mitt romney in a negative way as a business executive. so republicans on the sunday talk shows including fox news sunday were trying to push back and make sure that ryan is not defined as a radical. take a listen to john mccain? >> a new generation of leadership in our party and our nation. a man who understands the most compelling challenges this nation faces, obviously are jobs and xhetd. i am convinced that he will bring the kinds of ideas and not that he has been pursuing in the house and in v important

position he has held. >> you asked about the president earlier. fund-raising event will be getting going a little less than half an hour. so far it appears the president is trying to be careful not to be the one beating up to paul ryan. there has been chatter about negative attack ads and whether that may bring the president's like built rating. so he is trying to stay above the freeway so far and let people like david axelrod attack ryan. we'll listen to the president's words very closely. >> kelly: bottom line it appears to be the campaign that the president always wanted, right? >> reporter: the obama campaign has long said they wanted what they call a choice election. you focus on the next four years. who has got the better plan to deal with the current economic recovery that is very slow, is treading water right now. even the obama campaign admits

it's not going as quickly as they wanted. they want a choice election because jobs the deficit is not so good for president. now, they have the choice with paul ryan and his budgeted. that is why you're hearing the republicans push back because they won't just sit back and take these attacks. >> kelly: first lady michelle obama campaigning for her husband speaking at a fund-raiser in los angeles this hour. yesterday she made a surprise visit to colorado to meet with the victims of deadly colorado movie massacre. she spoke to the hospital staff that treated with the wounded and met with victims families and one patient who is still in intensive care. >> heather: janesville, wisconsin finding itself in the national spotlight. it is the hometown of republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan. sparking mixed reaction amongst the population of about 60,000.

how does the country's debt negatively impact americans and which class of taxpayers does it hurt the most? here is ed rowkouski. the national dead continues to rise. what impact will have it on the country but every household in america? >> i'm really happy we're talking about this. i don't think most people really understand what the debt is. we hear the debt. let's talk about that for a few minutes. there is $16 trillion on debt, that is 300 million people. $530,000 debt on every person. >> kelly: let knee stop it right there. did you say 3 $533,000 on every household because of $16

trillion debt. is that right? >> it really is, $533,000 of additional debt. so take your credit card bills, take your mortgage. that is how much debt so every single person in this country. it's gotten worse certainly over the last three years but the middle income, people who are middle-class and middle income earners it hurts them more because just the very nature they are middle income it hurts them more proportionally. so the idea somehow this insignificant event or this number doesn't matter. people need to know they have that debt. unfortunately kelly, that debt is increasing. as a result of that, this is very important point, our dollar drops. people hear these terms, that means our dollar buys less so the items they are trying to buy is going up. so it's harder for them to make

ends meet. >> kelly: which makes life very hard for each and every one of us, no matter how much money we make. that is a painful burden for every taxpayer to bear. what action should can taken to stop the massive bleeding of american capital and the american dollar? >> that is the great debated we have right now. we have the romney-ryan plan. they have a plan and they say this is going to help fix things. it's going to take a while. we're not going to get out of this easy. one way we're going to get out of this but do we take pro-active measures or continued to increase this. that is the question americans have to deal with at this point. what do i believe we have to do? spending has to be curtailed. there is no question about that. this was your household and kept getting more and more debt and got worse and you are paying the interest at low interest rates, if interest rates went up it would be worse. so you have to say, hey, time

out. let's slow down. let's sell the house and get a smaller home. let's take some measures, some austerity measures to slow down how much money you are spending. >> kelly: you're saying the government should be doing the same thing? >> the government needs to do that. >> kelly: before i let you go. a couple weeks ago we discussed the boles-simpson plan that proposed a plan that could reduce the deficit and reduce spending. boles states in an editorial, no matter who wins the election next president in congress must lower tax rates for everyone in return for sweeping reduction in tax loopholes, taxpayers on the economy would benefit from a vastly simpler code and getting rid of loop holes would reduce one trillion of the 4 trillion

hampshire, ohio and nevada, high concentration of senior citizens. this is coupon plan, this is bad news for the republicans in those states a big concentration of seniors. i think it's a real problem. it's a risk that the romney campaign took they didn't need to take. they could have kept this election on the economy. now, they have chosen to divert the strongest issue to the economy and move it over to medicare where they are going to lose that issue. >> heather: my question to you, is it a death spiral for the komz campaign in those key swing states and with seniors like he mentioned? >> the onus is going to be on them to educate the voter, medicare is going broke in 12 years. president has no plan to fix it. frankly his achievement obamacare is taking $700 billion out of medicare over the next ten years. so the onus is on the

romney-ryan ticket to say we wanted to preserve medicare for the future. president obama has no interest in doing that. if they can win this debate in moving forward and talk about the future on top of the present. then they push their ideas toward the economy they are going to win this election, but they cannot win this election without winning ohio and florida, two states with high population of seniors. that is something tha is weighing on back of their minds. >> heather: what about that messaging when it comes to explaining the changes in ryan plan when it comes to medicare, wouldn't paul ryan be a plus doing that? >> he can talk all he wants about it. seniors like medicare. that is what people are missing here. you ask seniors if they approve of medicare, if they think it's a great program. they want to have medicare and they say yes. anything that threatens that is a problem. i think the last thing in the world that romney wants to do is to explain paul ryan's plan.

as i mentioned earlier, he wants to talk about the economy. that is the strongest issue here. that is what people care about. if obama has a vulnerability, it's on economy and not on medicare. >> heather: and biggest flash pointed in the entire ryan plan even massachusetts governor mitt romney has cut some distance from it. how do you expect him to reacted moving forward, governor romney? >> governor romney is going to say, look, we have tough choices to make as voters. and we saw with scott walker and mitch daniels, voters are willing to make tough choices as long as you give them a plan and explain it in how it's going to make america better in the future. the goal at the end of the day, the goal is future and getting americans back to work. in a lot of ways it ties into the economy and that will be trick for the romney-ryan ticket moving forward. look at the numbers you just
