listen. >> not every republican has signed on to this kind of -- they will publicly. but there is some trepidation -- >> they're afraid. >> -- that this might be, looks a little like a ticket death wish. my gosh, do we want to talk about these things? is this where we want to go when the economy is so bad. we could have stayed on that. >> eric: death wish? that doesn't sound like straight reporting to me. >> andrea: i would like sources, actually, that would tell me a little bit more. sounds like a bit like harry reid. someone called me up on the phone and i heard a death wish. i haven't heard the word "death wish" from my republican. the only trepidation i heard from republicans is they are fearful of florida. and how democrats, because they are willing to stoop so low and at no cost just lie and run ads about paul ryan pushing granny off the cliff. fearful that republicans aren't going to make the case that democrats have already cut grandma's medicare. they did that in obamacare.

you cannot be for obamacare and be a protector of medicare. >> eric: stay on the reporting part of it. it sounded like an opinion to me. republicans, romney, and ryan have a ticket death wish. anybody? anyone fine that disturbing? >> dana: not really. candy to me gave herself -- i do think there is probably some republicans who said to them, lead up to it calling around who do you think will be the possible nominee? and if they threw out the name paul ryan, i don't doubt on background, under the guides of anonymity they said ryan would be terrible for us. but there is probably somebody who said that. no one with the guts to say it on the record. she gives herself a little leeway there. >> eric: what do you think? >> kimberly: anybody can find somebody to say something like that and call at it source. i call this reporting. i don't even buy it not given the enthusiasm and dollars i saw pour in over the weekend since this announcement was made. $5 million from 70,000 small

donors. that tells me those are people who were motivated and excited. we haven't seen a backlash from the pick. democrats can protest all they want. they're sweating it. >> eric: democrats, you expect them to protest. no surprise it comes from axelrod and stephanie cutter. but for candy crowly to give a push in the back, death wish, really? >> bob: i said all along vice presidents really don't matter much in the scheme of things. when it gets to election day it's one person versus another. in this case, not paul ryan who is a nice guy and smart. but it's -- i know you don't want to talk about his policies but the paul ryan record is becoming the romney record now. when you say, you are absolutely wrong about the medicare. yes, there is a cut in obamacare. >> eric: we're talking about candy crowley calling the ticket death wish. >> bob: it's true if you look at florida, without the state of florida, romney cannot win. if, in fact, this does perform, what it could perform

out how the female vote is going -- >> bob: there are a lot of ways, not getting in the policy but a lot of ways to turn ryan and his positions in a threat to su sur been a women -- suburban women. a lot of constituencies that we'll go after that paul ryan represents. >> dana: i think they are wrong. if you look at the tea party vote in 2010, a lot of women that were driving force behind the tea party, organizing and donating money, enthusiastically voted for him. i think if you are a mom with children and you are planning for their college education. you have your parents or your husband's parents you are taking care of and planning for your own retirement, the best plan is ryan. they have a steep hill to climb, but if they can effectively message it, actually more women who are not worried that the birth control is going to be taken away. they worry they won't have money in their pocket to pay for things they need to pay

for. >> andrea: as far as the media bias goes, this is different than crowley. crowley said i talked to some people who said she did reveal a source, which she should have. andrea mitchell bills herself as an anchor. not a pundit or an opinion person but as someone who is supposed to be a straight news journalist. she is not. she's propagandist. to say this is bad for women, a blanket statement. that is not news, andrea. that's propaganda. >> kimberly: change her name. i don't like her having the same name. >> bob: $5 million over the weekend raising money for romney, we raised $5 million for geraldine ferraro that was 20 years ago. not surprising that you see money coming in. >> eric: is it surprising andrea mitchell saying the women vote won't go to paul ryan? >> bob: no. >> eric: example number three, this is "60 minutes" and about what they did not show you. last night, bob schaefer asked paul ryan about medicare. great answer from the congressman. hit it out of the park. but cbs left it on the cutting

room floor and didn't put it on the show, even though they did put it online where nobody watched. take a look. >> in america, the nature of this country has been giving people more freedom, more choices. that's how we make medicare work down the road. >> you'll have to do a little selling. explain florida. >> our point is we need to prefer their benefit because government promised them they organize retirement. to make sure we can do that you must reform it for those of white house are younger. reforms are good reform. they started from the clinton commission in the late '90s. >> eric: that didn't make air. made it to the website. >> dana: and his mom lives in florida and she is a senior citizen and wouldn't do anything to hurt her. i don't know why the media continues to do this to themselves. people wonder why there is a bias in media. the little things. didn't think it was interesting enough to put on air. the excuse is we put it online. to your point, everybody

watches -- lots of people watch "60 minutesle" nobody is going online to find out what didn't make it in the story. they are never going to talk about that. >> andrea: are we really surprised after what cbs did with president bush? they have a bad track record. i don't know if the same selective editor went to nbc and selected editing this time around? again, this is par for the curse with networks like -- par for the course with networks like cbs. romney interview and let the people decide. they would have done their research, too, found out when paul ryan's father died he also was on government assistance. he is not going to gut the systems that help him and help his mother currently today. >> kimberly: that is a problem. it's fabrication. shape-shifting content to suit the world and political views they have. which is misleading and deceptive. you can't call it journalism if that is what you are doing. you're misinforming the american people. they have the right to know

>> dana: all right. welcome back. thinking of that song is appropriate. we talk about paul ryan as mitt romney's vice presidential choice and what it meant bigger picture. bob i want to appeal to your expertise in presidential politics. setting aside what you think of his policies from a party evolution stand point, big deal for the republicans that he chose ryan? >> bob: yeah. this is the first non-baby boomer -- as far as i remember, the first non-baby boomer candidate for president or vice president. a lot of people there. the generation that is bigger than the baby boomer generation and it does give him a certain standing to talk about the future. what is going to happen if the deficits and the rest of it. so yes, it probably does do that. it bridges generation. but i'm not so sure how much vice presidency will mean in terms of votes. will it affect younger people's votes? probably not. but does it change the

republican party? probably does. >> dana: from enthusiasm standpoint. we had reaction from some people who, the fox news all-stars. take a listen to that. get reaction. >> this young man, this exceptionally impressive and able young man paul ryan represented the future of the republican party. i think his selection as vice president accelerates the process by which he emerges in that role. >> a bold pick. it was the best pick that romney could have made given the situation right now, a chance to put the campaign, recharge it. but it will recharge both sides. it is going to energize the republican base. it will definitely enerize the democratic base as well. >> paul ryan has experience making his case to moderate and moderate liberal voters. democratic and independent voters in wisconsin. i think in that respect, he is underrated as a talented politician. >> change is now of the side of the republicans whereas it was obviously on the side of the democrat in 2008.

they can make or hear case of that as we heard ryan do it. it's introductory remarks. >> dana: paul ryan will have a chance tomorrow night. the first person you heard was brit hume. he will have the first solo television interview with paul ryan that will air tomorrow night on fox news. hear more about that coming up in the next day. when you first heard about it, or people you talk to, the buzz, were there similar comments from what you just heard? >> andrea: they were. my friends, a lot of them worked on capitol hill and worked for paul ryan. you have worked in the house, too. i never heard a bad thing about paul ryan. even when i worked there from democrats. he's such a likable guy. he will be tough to go negative on. he is such an honest guy and he provides a fresh face for the party, which is really important. he energizes the group called the new professional. in an article you sent me by mark penn which talked about the 30- to 45-year-olds making more money, concerned about their kids that are in the middle. the independent voters as well

that are concerned about the debt and the deficit. as far as turn-out, barack obama's base has not been energized the way it was before. this is all turnout, turn out, turnout. romney had the sage forsight to know a pick like paul ryan would galvanize the base. >> dana: i got to know paul ryan in the white house years and afterwards when i got to meet with him, he is wickedly smart. then i mean that in a good way. right? if you meet somebody like that. he is also almost painfully humble. there has been some agonizing on the far right that says he is not good enough. he is just romney-like. have you heard that? >> eric: i'm starting to hear a little bit. i have to tell you, 10,000 people turned out on sunday in north carolina. 10,000. 10,000 more turned out in wisconsin, which would be obvious. 10,000 north korea is important. only an hour away from where

the dmc will be. i think this is going to shore up north carolina. it was going to shore up virginia. because the announcement was made there. bob mcdonald was fantastic. shore up wisconsin. all of a sudden the electoral map turns a little bit. >> bob: you think 10,000 people turned up out spontaneously? when you do a tour like this, when you do a tour -- >> eric: 10,000, bob? >> bob: yeah. >> eric: i don't think barack obama got 10,000. >> dana: i want to ask kimberly something. paul ryan grew up looking at ronald reagan as his inspiration to go to public service. you talked about ronald reagan being inspiration to you as well. and the things you've done. one reason you were in journalism and politics. what does it mean to the party to have this change? >> kimberly: there is a real appetite in the republican party for small government conservatism. that is what ryan represents. he is forward thinking. he wants to tack the big problems we have. cut deeply in spending. the deficit. really take on the issue that

seemed to be unmanageable, other people have been irresponsible in politics that want to pass ito future generations. instead of thinking about now and doing something, showing lealeadership. that is why you see the excitement for the party. >> dana: empowerment group, started by jack kemp and inspired by ronald reagan. there are a lot of ideas that republicans and democrats can agree on; don't you think? >> bob: yeah. keep in mind talk ryan -- >> dana: let's not talk about that. >> bob: what is that? i mean he is taking on entitlements is fine. somebody has to take them on. but the problem is the way he takes them on will cost people a lot. that's something the democrats will go after. the other thing about this guy he is a very likable nice guy. but i will tell you, i talked to a formerepublican governor who said when we get near medicare or social security, republicans, we get burned. you notice there are not many elected officials talking about it. they believe that rubio would have been the right choice.

he is trying to preserve -- he has a plan. at least he has the guts and the smarts to put together a plan, you might not agree with the details but he has something. they have nothing. listening to the criticism about ryan initially, felt like this sounds like a campaign from the early 1990s. that's why i'm so -- i want to be inspired by the choice of ryan on the right. people are inspired to think this finally, we can have this debate. we will argue it on the merits. and see where it goes. they know they have tough messaging. i think they can do it. >> andrea: eric, isn't it true every time that the democrat goes against paul ryan they have to somehow talk about president obama's budget, which the senate has yet to pass? democrats haven't done anything to tackle entitlement in a serious way. >> eric: what is going on, very interesting. president obama came out and all the speeches started with oh, yeah, paul ryan, family guy. great guy. love him. i know him well. then they send axelrod out and stephanie cutter out and they

of ayn rand and paul ryan? actor rob lowe who tweeted out can someone explain the vitriol when ayn rand comes up?
