banks, once again, write their own rules. unchain wall street. >> ooh. >> they're going to put you all back in chains. >> two men running for vice-president of the united states, two very different types of media coverage. so, jim, let's start with what joe biden said there, what was the media reaction. >> they were sort of amused and said it was a mistake and didn't make any further fuss about it. by contrast, you know, you go back to 1988 with dan quayle, the few comments he made turned him into a permanent idiot as far as the media was concerned. 1968, another vice-presidential candidate spiro agnew, biden is getting off easy. >> have they become apologists for biden? >> i think we're gotten used to bidenisms and people don't react. when the president of the united states has to walk away or distance himself from his own vice-president as obama

was forced to do this week, i think enough is said. the point has been made, it was a mistake, it shouldn't have happened. >> jon: as jim pointed out when dan quayle misspelled potato on a chalkboard in a school classroom, it was front page news. and when biden makes a comment like that, what's the reaction. there's a glaring double standard no question about it and the last time around with sarah palin, joe biden has been doing it since day one and carl cameron after the election wrote a great article going through the things that biden has said and showing that there was an incredible double standards and he's a nonpartisan journalist, he wasn't somebody who was doing it as a republican. and i just think that idea that we just tolerate this because it's just joe is not okay. and you know, he shouldn't be, he should be held to the same standard as everybody else. >> there are reports that his team was trying to edit, trying to sort of sanitize the

press pool reports coming out of virginia campaign appearance. that's just not done. but nobody seems to be screaming about it much. >> it not done unless of course you're part of the nbc organization, where they edit sound bites all the time. and here is what the romney campaign, they were having trouble with one of the bands they used as a campaign theme song and pulled it. romney should open up with the ray charles song ♪ unchain my heart >> allege george w. bush the grocery store standing, the republicans are stupid and idiots we don't like the policies and that's the way the media will try to portray a republican. >> jon: talk about that, rudy guiliani, the former republican candidate for president and new york city mayor questioned biden's mental acuity. i mean, is anybody asking that question? >> yeah, i'm not as concerned about that as i am about the fact that i just think that

he-- first of all, i think's overrated i would never go as far as to question his mental acuity. he's been overrated, he's been presented an an important policy genius since he's been in the senate since he's 30. i think part of the reason that biden gets such a pass and it's one of the problems in washington is that he has been schmoozing with these reporters and editors for the last 30 years. he has, now, everyone loves to go to his parties and i think that people cut him slack because of that. >> jon: and you in the audience didn't see it, but every single head at the table was nodding when kirsten made that remark. that's really all it takes, schmooze the press? >> absolutely. the worst thing you can do is ignore the media, if you ignore us, we create our own narrative and call you to task on saying-- >> excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, look, nobody schmoozeded press more than george h.w. bush, they person liked him and wrote stories. by contrast, obama hasn't done

a press conference in months and the press are irked about it, but as far as they get. irked. they certainly don't let it change their overall tone, which is you know-- >> but biden has been in washington since he was 30 years old. >> the democrats-- >> and the republican-- going on and because he's there, people just assume, oh, well, he's been here so he must know what's going on and that's the question and that's the big problem. >> let's turn our attention to the other guy running for vice-president. mitt romney has taken a lot of heat from the press, you know, the wimp factor cover and things like that, has any of that changed with the selection of paul ryan? >> i think it's beginning to change, i mean, you see a far more aggressive now, before the media, and interviews of mitt romney than you saw before paul ryan joined the ticket. so, yes, but you also see the labeling. the labeling is always there with the republicans so you hear things about controversial paul ryan budget

plan. and devicive and we're getting back into the killing off the little old lady things with the rerunning of the democratic commercial with the wheelchair and the granny going over the cliff. well, one interesting thing, the rasmussen poll found by a margin of 5-is, the american media are in obama's pocket, according to those surveyed. and everything that-- >> i didn't see it, but chris mathews is quoted as saying of ryan, this guy could be worse than quail, more trouble than tom eagleton, is chris mathews scared? >> well, he's hostile for sure. i mean, look, the list of reporters, you know, george stephanopoulos, andrea mitchell, on and on forever, but it began in the miami herald within hours of ryan being selected the headline was, ryan could be a drag on romney in florida, that's all you need to know how the mainstream media thinks we can put news stories out there, and get away with it. >> and then there's this guy, tour a, he likes to go by one

name. tory on nbc, expert on race there, apparently and co-host of the cycle and accuses mitt romney of race bait, using a word at the top of the show, not going to repeat it here. how does he get away with that? >> i don't know. and the thing that always bothers me about these things is that his examples of how mitt romney is allegedly this terribly racist person who is trying to-- i'm not going to use the word, but portray black people in a certain way, are kind of standard campaign attacks. there's nothing in them that does not happen in every campaign and yet, suddenly, when mitt romney's doing it to an african-american, it's racist. >> well, there's a redefinition of the word, of course, an african-american cannot be a racist because they're always cast by the media and liberal politicians as victims so they can say whatever they want. on the other hand, an african-american president can divide racially in this

>> stimulating the economy back here. >> four more beers. >> four more beers. >> and president obama there campaigning in iowa this week. at the bud light tent, i guess it's something of a fixture the at the iowa state fair and you hear the chanting of "four more beers" break out. well, guess what? as a result of that presidential photo op visit, the proprietor of that tent, a guy named mike cunningham ii says he lost about $500,000 worth of business because the presidential folks, the secret service and so forth, shut down his operation for a couple of years-- couple of hours. and at any rate. that's part of what goes into staging a presidential photo op. and you see a lot of the president doing this kind of thing and yet, avoidg the white house press. any surprise? >> not the at all. part of the m-o we've come to expect it and as we've all talked about here, the press are not sufficiently upset about it.

i find an interesting statistic is that this week, why does obama have to appear? he's all over the television in the form of ads and we have now surpassed the amount of money spent on political ads, greater than everything spent in the last campaign and we're only halfway through this ordeal. >> he talked to entertainment tonight. >> or is it today? and no, he definitely, of course, he loves doing this stuff and he and michelle are very, very good at this and this is where he wants to keep the campaign right now. >> all right. jim, worked in the bush 41 white house as you said earlier. would you be telling this president if you were, you know, working there now, would you be telling this president, yeah, go on et, and talk to people magazine? >> sure, absolutely. and you'll get soft questions and they're kind of always friendly and also telling him to avoid the white house press corps and nobody wants to get into the belief story, for example and something we didn't have back then is twitter and social media and i

went back and looked. and mitt romney has 856,000 twitter followers. obama has 18 1/2 million and even more crucially, romney is following a grand total of 255 people and obama following 674,000. i don't think that president obama is following the 674,000. but they're putting in a computer. >> now we know why he's too busy to talk to the media. >> and according to huge numbers of young people and the rest aren't going to bother to vote so aim not sure that that's necessarily a cause and effect. >> jon: we have, kirsten, are the national unemployment rate has ticked up to 8.3%, underemployment is probably closer to 16%, afr got iran potentially in pursuit of a nuclear weapon and the president won't talk to the white house press corps. hasn't had an official news conference in weeks. >> well, political strategy,

as jim said, he's he doing secretary what anybody would be doing. i'm a little torn on this one. i don't think that the white house media is that great and i don't know what these press conferenc conferences are because nothing seems to happen and the media in general aren't that great. and i'm starting to wonder why any of the candidates start to sit down with them. if you look the at the 60 minutes interview, with romney and ryan having an interview and then having the discussion of medicare cut out of it. i mean, it's just, it's become almost-- it would be km comical if it wasn't so serious. >> a puffy white house is serious and the story, the sleeper of the whole year, and the leak business and how the white house can leak all of this stuff and denounce leaks. the way that they would question nixon for watergate and get what happened with tom donlan and-- >> he promised to be the most transparent president in

history. you have to be held to the standard you set yourself. he's not. >> i wanted to end with a segment from rasmussen reports. they asked people will the media try to help obama, help romney or offer unbiased coverage? >> there are the numbers on your screen, shocking. 51% believe the media are out to help obama and 22% offer unbiased coverage. remember that. if you see something that you feels shows evidence of media bias. up next, will the next big political debates be fair and balanced. . >> the debate commission names the members of the media who moderate the big debate and ignites a big debate on who got picked. will one side have a big advantage? the answer is next on news watch.

>> the debate commission announced the moderators for this year's vice-presidential debates this week. they are cbs's bob shiver and candy crowley and jim lehrer and abc's martha, what do you think of the lineup? >> the establishment right there. and what we should expect of the symbol of the establishmentism. and it's a shame, brit hume i think did the best interview so far with paul ryan wasn't included in there. >> good choices, bad choices. >> absolutely, how can you not have at least one conservative asking questions? there are, all of these people are either left of center or very, very so center that it would never occur to them to ask a question from a conservative viewpoint. it's simply unacceptable and i think it diminishes the debate. >> kirsten?

>> well, i think that the fox debates with the republicans in particular were the best debates. so, so one like a bret baier can show that he's he not conservative, he actually asks tough questions of republicans and to democrats and that's what you want. there were a lot of republicans that were upset and thought he was being too hard on a republican. >> this format goes back to the 1970's, we're using a 20th century model as joe biden might say in the 20th century. they need to blow this entire thing up. it just, first of all, they're all liberals and congratulating theirselves, gee, two women are going to be moderators. >> no difference between a woman or man or race, ethnicity, if they're all liberals. and one was caught reading a liberal blog and talking points she was making doing an interview this year and that's what the public perceives, it's all one-sided and i'd like to see mitt romney say i'm going to do these, but i

get to pick one member of the panel if they're going to have a panel. rush limbaugh, sean hannity or mark levin on the panel and that would boost ratings. >> and mixed media reaction, the scene on wednesday off floyd corkens, a young man, volunteered for a center allegedly marched in the family research county building with gun and seriously and denounced frc's policies and shot a guard in the arm before being subdued. and it seniors on the southern poverty law center and the media. >> i think this comes in with the southern poverty law center, he came in with not just a gun, but 50 rounds of ammunition and chick-fil-a sandwiches and the controversy with chick-fil-a and media reports. it was reported that

chick-fil-a and their statements about being anti-gay and supported the family research council and that's what reports have said. and in those reports, they say that the family research council, which is a hate group, a certified hate group from the southern poverty law center. >> are the media treating this as a hate crime, judy. >> depends which media you're watching or reading. i mean, there were some networks, i bet, who are going to have a hard time figuring out which one, and begins with an m. and just didn't think it was worth covering at all. and i find that this kind of ignoring news is very troubling. >> and when you compare it to what happened, say in colorado or arizona, exactly, kim carney at the washington examiner tweeted out imagine what happened if it was a conservative shooting into a liberal group. days of news, and candlelight vigils and chin pulling of hate and violence and--
