get more intense, as did the one-on-one last night between our pal juan williams and sean hannity. >> mitt romney, called a murderer? called him a felon? >> president obama didn't call him a murder. they did not. what they said is he was in charge of bain, b abin closed the company -- >> he was out of bain by the time. >> he was signing on the bottom line as the leader of bain. i think the add is scurrilous. >> why doesn't obama say it? >> he's supposed to punch back when republicans say things like the >> what do they say? >> you're a welfare president trying to make the whole country -- >> 8 million americans on food stamps. >> it's not ridiculous, it's offensive. racial implications. >> it's true! >> andrea: so forget the fact the words between romney and obama. u and sean hannity went at it. >> juan: we did. people told me it's great tv. intensity of it suggests that

people think this is a very negative campaign. and the question is from both sides, who is more negative in you look at the poll, talk about the polls later, people think both sides are being too negative right now. the reason that we did that segment is because rick warren, the evangelical minister said he is not going to have a session with the two of them on stage, because he thinks there is too much negativity. >> greg: do you buy that excuse? ricfrom rick warren? nobody committed to going. i've don it with parties and i sent out invitations and i don't get any. you know that party i was planning, turns out i'm going to be out of town. i'm too embarrassed. >> dana: i've been thinking about that, too. rick warren is a person that could have a venue where there is discussion. disappointing that you said not to have it. >> andrea: when he did it in 2008 it was really fascinating forum. a lot of information came out of it. all right, eric, i want to ask you, as i mentioned before. >> eric: sean was right.

gotten negative and the president spent millions of dollars taking out negative ads, the polls are a statistical dead heat. it's not working. this is right in the dead of august. this is rare. >> dana: i think if you were to go back. we pulled the tape of our show in june, we sort of all predicted this. right? obama had a terrible june. he had a pretty good july. both of them have had a whatever august. now it's in a dead heat. that's what the media wants, right? everybody is going to want a dead heat up to the end. let me tell you, around october 20 is when you start seeing the main stream media say obama is pulling ahead and they will help him. >> andrea: an interesting number two from the fox poll is independents. by ten points. does this make you nervous, juan? independents sway elections. >> juan: yeah. >> andrea: ten-point lead. >> juan: first, i think it indicated there is only like 10% of americans who are undecided in the election. it's a base election. both sides are pretty much set. the thing is independents this

year have switched back and forth. until this poll they were in w obama. previously they were with romney. then to obama. now back to romney. ten points. in 2008 we saw obama win independents by eight. now trailing by 10. that is an 18-point swing. not good news for the obama campaign. >> eric: can i throw a question to you? how many there are so many factors to determine the election? ohio, florida, women, vote. >> andrea: virginia. >> eric: virginia. so many things. i mean, if you listen to the pundits you have to win evening. you guys, both, how much -- what percentage of latino vote does romney have to win to win the election? 30 to 35%? >> andrea: that is an area where he is weak. one area i agree that demographic is leaning toward president obama. i will say this, though. after all the negative advertisers, seniors according to the latest fox news poll. romney leads with them other the last few weeks they named

paul ryan. ber reasonable ophiasissing he will take away medicare and push your granny off the cliff. the interesting area to me is political enthusiasm. that beared out in the fox news poll. it showed g.o.p. voters by double digits are more enthusiastic to turn out. that makes the biggest difference along with independents. >> greg: if you look at the numbers, the race is tighter than chris christie's underwear band. i get tired of the polls separating things out by identity. by hispanics and blacks and women and elderly. we're never going to get out of the identity politics. >> juan: you didn't like that one? >> dana: i was trying not to laugh. >> greg: that is the problem with polling. i want a candidate that unites everybody. we continue to keep dividing it. i know we do it because that's how you do polls but it depresses me. that's all we talk about. he gets all the black, he gets all the white, he gets all the

elderly and he gets all the young kids. >> eric: so many factors ar are -- >> juan: wait. [over talk ] >> eric: wins ohio and only gets 10% of the latino vote. is he going to win or lose? >> juan: as andrea told you if obama gets 10% of the latino vote he is gone. there are variables in the game. one of the variables not chris christie's underwear band i like better paul ryan's abs. later, the girls -- >> eric: nancy pelosi's facial scan. >> juan: you are so mean. >> andrea: wow! this is a happy friday. getting personal. >> dana: the fox poll four weeks ago, there is a significant difference in one month. even though the -- maybe it was the ryan choice. >> juan: no. the fox poll previously was registered voters. this time they're doing likely voters. it's different. if you still do register, obama would be in the lead.

by the way, you are complaining, greg, about the way things are broken out. we just live in polarized political times. it don't think it's as a result of polling that imposes this. if you look, we were talking -- >> greg: polling drives behavior. >> dana: that's what you do when you try to sell a product. if you sell -- we talked about that, they're not trying to sell a human being. >> greg: but a human being is not a product. that is a depressing asset. if a person has certain hair, you sell them a certain hair product. >> dana: like your just for men. >> greg: i was going in a different direction. >> andrea: this is so personal. >> greg: that was totally directed at me. it's the little people. they're evil. my point is we're now targeting types of people, minority based on the fact they have to be the same color skin. that's depressing. gawps it is depressing.

we can survive obama but not the people who vote for obama. talk about personal. >> andrea: talk about personal and not chris christie's underpants for once. next week, tampa, we'll all be there. juan, what can we expect? what does romney have to do? >> juan: he has to get more personal. he has to say to people, a plan, here is why it will work. one thing we saw in the poll today even though americans, there is a big jump, gap in terms of people approving or disapproving obama performance on the economy and right now, the majority disapprove. but then when you ask what about the future it's tied between obama and romney. if romney can say here is my plan what i'll do, he can get a boost. >> andrea: hes a stage with millions of people. this is the time to present himself. what do you think he needs to say to unite the party? >> eric: he is doing it now. picked the right guy for vice president. highlight paul ryan. stay on jobs. forget the other satellite stuff that the left wants to

do, stay on job. >> dana: three things to focus on. economy, federal budget deficit and spending and job creation. those are the three main things. they have to have a little fun. they have a great name. we built this. they need to at least have, you know, be happy that they got to this moment. >> juan: they got to appeal to you, dana. >> dana: they got me. >> andrea: you are a master of fun. >> greg: true. that was my nickname. malser of fun. mitt has to field a script from the media. media will try to make it about social issues, abortion and he has to make it about the economy. nobody will do it for him. the most important factor at the convention is the mini bar. without a myny bar, there is no mini me. interesting fact about dana the mini bar is a walk-in freezer for her. >> juan: that's good. >> the anarchists of occupy wall street will be there. >> andrea: they are.

offering them everything. can you occupy yourself? if they're the 1% they should occupy their own offices and protesting there. unions are great if you're running them. >> eric: dana, we don't have a problem with union membership paying the leader a lot, right? >> dana: this is a weird thing. i'm going to defend them and they right to be paid what their members think is worthy of their responsibility. if you look at the associatio associations in washington, d.c., the salaries to me people lower for similar type of things. fun to stir up class warfare. teacher might say i'm the one in the class room. but on par, the people are paid what they are worth. >> eric: okay. a lot of teachers come up to me and say i'm a teacher in new jersey.

i listen to you. i like what you are saying. i say what about your union leaders? well, i don't really like them so much. why is it that union leaders make so much money and people are making their salaries for them aren't making the money they should be making? >> juan: good teachers should be paid more. but the unions are defending bad teachers. they spend a lot of money defending bad teachers and defending bad rules and regulations. let me get back to heart and soul of your argument. dana is on point here. if you're in washington you know what people who represent the lobbyists make and the special interest group leaders make. go back to your industry. corporate america. median pay of u.s., top 200 ceos, $14.5 million, eric. >> greg: but they generate wealth. create things. what do unions create? red tape. >> juan: who do unions create when they operate cameras on usnode >> eric: that is labor. they're paid for labor.

i'm bret baier in washington. big story here late changes to the republican national convention as the g.o.p. ticket barnstorms their way to tampa. tonight on "special report," news that mitt romney's wife ann will get a prime time speaking slot. her speech is moving. we'll explain why that happened and why it's important. along with economic attacks, mitt romney today made a joke about the controversy over president obama's birth certificate. that drew a quick and pointed response from the obama campaign. tropical storm isaac could be uninvited guest in tam pennsylvania ge ate live up -- tampa and we get a live update on where it might be headed and what might happen if it heads into a hurricane to head tampa's way. new study states household income has fallen more since the economic recovery began than in the throes of the

bombarded? >> it's hard to sit down and watch a ballgame with my son because of the commercials. they sexualize everything. >> dana: that was part of a report last night i thought by the reviews people thought it was thoughtful and fair. there was a question, though, which is andrea people are asking why are we doing a whole hour-long specials about mormonism when somebody seemed to want to do any specials about jeremiah wright church that obama attended for 20 years. >> andrea: there were a couple of specials we found done about wright. i would have been interested to see a full special on who president obama was, though, too. he writes "in dreams of my father" he was raised, these are his own words as a muslim to get in-depth picture of who he is. academic records. where he went to school. a lot of that we talk about on the show. it's examined. i think it's okay for the specials on mormonism. >> dana: one more sound bite. people are like what is it about? romney never had caffeine or alcohol. look at the sound bite here.
