they are trying to roll with the bunch of the storms. >> they head on down. >> in moment more changes for the rnc. and the lathes track on isaac as it heads toward the gulf coast and possibly new orleans. >> that is where we begin tonight. hours ago the national hurricane center issued a hurricane warning extending from the florida panhandle through louisiana including new orleans. the certainty of isaac. theres is moving into the gulf of mexico at 15 miles per hour. it is packing winds of 65 miles per hour. tropical storm pores winds extend outward from this thing from the eye for 200 miles. this is an enormous storm. forecasters say it is expected to become a category 2 hurricane making land fall late tuesday early wednesday. wednesday 7 years to the day from when hurricane katrina

stormed the shore and rewrote louisiana coastline. then in 2005 caused much of the pain in new orleans. it was a 12-foot surge when the center of isaac collides with the coast. parts of florida already got a little taste of isaac today. the storm pounding the keys sending ribbons of rain lashing into miami beach and high winds there, too. the national convention is supposed to kickoff tomorrow in tampa as well. it is scheduled to open tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. the actual convention with all of the hoop law begins on tuesday. nothing is set in stone. we are going to make safety our primary kreern. just to see how things will unfold. at this point very confident by

tuesday we will be in great shape and kickoff the convention. >> the governor of florida, mississippi, alabama and louisiana have all postponed or canceled their convention plans. they have each declared a state of emergency in their homes. louisiana's governor bobby jindal already ordered mandatory evacuations begin tomorrow at noon. people are already getting out at this point. the gulf of mexico the oil and gas companies have begun evacuating off the platforms. that could end up in isaac's path as well. the storm has potential to be dangerous. now, it is setting the sights on the gold coastline an area that knows a hurricane fury all too well we have team fox coverage with bill keating rick leventhal. but first go to chief meteorologist rick. >> storms certainly for the first time really since we have had it starting to look like a

tropical storm or potentially getting close to looking like a hurricane. here is radar image. you can see heavy rain across florida. martin county and st. lucie county have tornado warnings in effect right now. satellite imagery the organized storm has not had a lot of storms right in the certainty of it. finally the thunderstorms are beginning to blossom at the center of the storm. it is finally moving away from that strong interaction it had with land. it will not have interaction with land through central northern gulf area. that starts to feel the effects of at least tomorrow evening into tuesday morning in the land fall midday tuesday into tuesday night. here is the official track of the storm growing to about 90 to 100 mile an hour storm.

our models are all over the place. it is further off toward the west around mobile. pushing its way to the west of new orleans that's why we have a cone. the cone encompasses all of that and anywhere across the gulf. stronger storms especially some of the thunderstorms we are seeing right now hold and it looks very much like this is very much in the beginning tof the storm holding together and beginning to wind up. these two models i reference post very different pictures for rainfall totals which means flooding. take a look at what happens here with one of our models from louisiana and oklahoma. big slot around 616 inches of -- 16 inches of rain. further off toward the east louisiana doesn't get hardly any rain all of the rain goes toward

the deep south and into carolina. big differences still. this has been one of the hardest hurricanes or tropical storms to forecast we have seen in years. clearly that is the case as we have been all over on what we expect to see in the storm. unfortunately we don't have an idea. from anywhere just west of pensacola. a lot of uncertainty still with the storm. >> that is a big chunk with these models. we will come back with more on this. isaac already ripped across the florida keys. today winds gusting up to 70 miles an hour. with that wind the threat of storm surgeon into the night now with the brunt of the storm moving past florida some of the locals are celebrating in key west. they tend to do that isaac never reached hurricane strength. team fox coverage continues with

phil keating. have conditions improved now where you are? >> oh, ever so slightly. it certainly doesn't look like it right now. we have a big band of wind coming in. take a look at the palm frauns on these trees. take a look at this ocean. this is the backside of the storm. this now northwest, key west. still producing a lot of waves and wind as well as some serious bands of rain about the last hour. the keys raked with yet another band of rain. that has resulted in sporadic street flooding in key west as well as up u.s. 1. we saw some people suffering from cabin fever so they left their homes and apartments where they are hunkering down for the

storm all day. they were wading through the flooded streets as is typical in key west when you have the very end. the damage so far as far as power outages and damage and flooding really appears to be minimal especially compared with the initial assessment of a day or two ago. that is coming from the governor all of the way down to the monroe county emergency management director. so a big sigh of relief but still as daylight comes tomorrow morning, those emergency management officials will get back on the ground and really assess the total damage. >> phil keating that wind has not stopped blowing the way it is for several hours. saw three hours ago not much change there. that's a live look in tampa bay area. want to take a look in brandon. one of the storm chasers are there. we are going to talk with him by phone. he does this for a living. doesn't mean it is not

>> governor mitt romney is concerned about things affected by the storm. governor romney as he and his wife arrived at a prep school in new hampshire to prepare for the convention and do a little speech rehearsal. karl cameron is here tell us what the governor is doing to prepare? >> he is working on his speech and did the whole run through had a teleprompter and did a couple runs. it is not done yet. he is known to edit so there will be changes in the margins. in addition tomorrow he will be in belmont at his home town in

massachusetts. he will meet with the chairman of his transition committee a stroke on what would be the first day of the convention had it not been for the postponement because of isaac. he will be meeting with the man who transferred the romney government from the obama government. apart from that there is westcon about isaac not only tampa by the convention and how it effects the folks around the gulf coast. mr. romney said here is how it went. >> talk about the hurricane mr. dovgovernor? >> are you concerned about your convention? >> it will be a great convention. >> what they are planning to do is look for speakers tomorrow night. tuesday and thursday having said that the speakers played for prime time aren't going to change. it will be a little crunch.

>> congressman ryan speaks on wednesday. governor romney on thursday night. what are they doing in the meantime? >> well, paul ryan has an event tomorrow it will be sort of a sendoff. he will head to tampa on tuesday and stay there for the duration. mitt romney is here in new hampshire and boston. he speaks at los angeles and american league gone. because of the storm and convention and travel restraints it is what happens with that. >> mitt romney and all of america is worried about this. the to be careful to not get involved in the bare kckle policy convention stuff or in the president gave his plans to a campaign this week les they look like they are more worried about the campaign than they are about the people who were in isaac's path. both sides recognize the loss to the week of national disaster

higher gusts several worked here in the past half hour as i have gotten further south. >> i checked out your web site i know how much of this you do. compare isaac to some of the ones you have driven through chasing. >> i have gone through hurricane katrina and hurricane wilma in south florida. this is not as bad as either of those. those are both major hurricanes. now on the bridge. i think it will be a big threat florida west coast as well as storm surge. so i say along the west coast don't take this lightly. it is going to make an impact and could be hadz douse. >> you know, joe, i want people to understand this is sunshine bridge. i have driven across this as they said moments ago it is scary when it doesn't have

tropical storm systems. is there water on the roadway? >> i can't really see the waves but the winds are definitely picking up here as we are going down. >> are you seeing very many people? they said look not mandatory evacuations but theygested they stay in shelter they stay inside. >> earlier today there were quite a few people out. right now they have not seen many people heading south. there are a few people heading north. you ha i have not seen anybody heading south for the fort myers area. >> look at the center of the screen you can see where he is going now. >> you can't see the rainfall you are describing. what the wind like now?

>> weather problems from tropical storm isaac. gop officials have already canceled monday's event with a storm bearing down on florida, well actually it already kissed the keys and moving on through. isaac expected to pick up strength as it barrels through the panhandle as well. nearly 7 years to the day after it devastated new orleans. it is tough timing for the gvop with isaac threatening to over shadow the political message.

nothing of what they thought could happen. besides the wind is the fact that it floods very easily here. he doesn't expect to see any of that with his storm. the chairman of the rnc are hopeful they can go on with the rest of the program. here's what they told me today. >> by comparison of what we dealt with is a minor distraction compared to something major. >> we don't see this as a level of being one of the catastrophic situations. we pray it is not. we are moving forward. we can make whatever moves we make. >> what he was eluding to there is the idea if it were to wrap up to be a big storm and hit a major state like new orleans

they would have to cancel one or more days. >> police say also john another situation they have been dealing with is the protester that they raised outside the convention. i don't know how close he was. what did they find out? >> he was about five blocks away when this incident happened. james wilson was marching with a small group of occupied protestors in the very first security zone had the heavy security secret service court maned by local and state police. they said he was walking strapped to his leg by his shorts an 8 inch long knife. they called for him to stop. according to police he wouldn't stop he was allowed to carry whatever wasn'ted wherever he wanted. police had to restrain him. they raised him. he is in county jail in hillsborough county and has an appearance in court. thank you very much. people along florida's panhandle

land, but we are going to see the effects far longer than that tuesday evening. th this is a look of where the center of it is now. what we have not seen for quite a while is it is looking for tropical positions. it looks more like we see than a tropical storm. it has a designed center core it has no more interaction with land. it will now begin to stenth en. point this out a couple days ago all of these models were going over here around panama city. now going to the west. it put new orleans on the sad site of this storm. it brought in a lot of water through lake ponchatrain and that's what causes a lot of

flooding. look at this temperature 83 degrees the storm to the north would have been cooler water which does make a difference. the storm on this track goes over slightly warmer water. that is one of the reasons why we think it will likely strengthen. still a huge spread. we are only 36 to 48-hours from land fall here. we have a gigantic spread here. which like the cone to be smaller for people, it's not. everybody needs to be watching. by it time it gets here it will be too late. we will feel the effects of some of the rain moving in and some of the wind moving in. a lot of people need to be moving in. >> you and i were talking earlier people were asking why didn't it hit kwooes with more force. i know they are down there partying like it's 1999 because they didn't see a hurricane.

that is no longer the case. >> the storm likes the air around it to be saturated to be moist. the dry air gets in it. it chokes off the energy source. now the air around it is getting more saturated. looks like it will begin to be strengtheden -- strengthened. can't pay too much attention to these categories and how strong it is. all bets are off to show how strong it will get. we will see a major hurricane in the central gulf. the next complete advisory comes outright at 11:00. you can share it with the viewers right at the end of the show. >> usually comes 4 minutes early. along northern florida's gulf coast people have been preparing all day all weekend for the

storm. >> they are already on the way of generators, water, sparks, gas cans you name it it is coming. >> stay in doors it is not a spectator event. >> just saying isaac could make land fall. rick leaven how are local officials preparing? >> they have issued a state of emergency here this afternoon. hurricane watch in effect for the county. they are closing schools opening shelters tomorrow mor-- morning. large part because of their prior experience with hurricane ivan. it followed rye sack's projected path. hit near mobile and really tore this town apart. this was back in 2004.

ivan hit pensacola with full force. that is the part of the storm that hit this beach. he is a business owner and he's joining us now. >> you told me your pizza place was shut down for 19 months. >> 19 months. the storm surge was so outrageous. we are on an island. it was huge. the waves come up or water came up to 22 to 23 feet. >> the whole stretch of land was under water? >> absolutely. it was horrendous. >> did you take any comfort? >> not at all. ready.hing is about timing. once it hits the gulf we don't know but we are ready. >> you see this ferris wheel they are removing the gondola from that ferris wheel to prepare that in case hurricane

force winds blow through. cost $8 million and moving the gondola so it isn't damaged when the storm hits. >> what a visual. now we know. that is a monster of a ride. they are going to protect people by taking the gondolas off of it. >> you might think the promise of rain would be good news. experts say i sack could make matter worse. that is because the storm surge threatens to push salt water from the gulf into the fresh water of the mississippi river. normally the river's flow is enough to give protection but the drought. look how it has slunk. you see the river last august. president the right side shows how much of it rides up. the big fear is salt water can fill the empty space.

it can wreak havoc on the ecosystem and contaminate the water supply. i know they are watching that. >> crews in the new orleans area already bracing for the safeguards the levees could stand in the way of waters. hurricane katrina severely damaged the 350 mile levy system when it hammers the coast in 2005. they have 14 billion to build new and improved flood walls. that project close to completion. we hope so. architects designed a new le sri to give 100 years of protection for something that happens roughly once a century. even with levees in place more than 200 thousand homes are at risk from this current storm. that amounts to some $36 billion of property. >> most of it in new orleans.

>> an estimated 50,000 people at the republican national convention. it has not gone as originally planned. the decision to postpone the convention has them working quickly to schedule the rest of the week. shawn spicer is joining us. the convention kicks off tomorrow with a regular schedule for 10 minutes and then reset. how will it all work? >> as you mentioned we will kick it off tomorrow. we will immediately recess and start programming tuesday at 2:00. we will have a great convention adjust the schedule a little bit. we have great headliners. we have everybody who skchedule to speak still speaking. make sure we have a convention that allows america to get to see mitt romney and paul ryan understanding from a variety of stand points and understand their vision for the future.

>> we have learned from the national hurricane center. tropical storm isaac has taken a turn. a worse case scenario for new orleans. no reason to think it will change. the good news is it may not have much time to build strength. once it becomes a hurricane from a category 1 to 2 through wednesday. that is a silver lining. the storm unleashed heavy winds and rain on florida in the keys earlier. phil keating is live in the area. phil? >> hi harris. the good news for all of the keys is it did not materialize into a category 1 but isaac remained a tropical storm. but the winds are pretty strong out here. 35-40 mile an hour winds. here is one example. some of the localized street flooding that has led officials to the keys to encourage all residents that did not evacuate to still stay put in your house

don't go driving around because all through out the keys there are sporadic areas of flooding. that could be a further danger to the drivers. we are on the backside of this tropical storm now auchlt of the winds and waves are coming in from the south. you can still see the surge. it is still expected overnight. it remains in effect through monroe county. tropical storm warning remains in effect through the morning and entire southern half of florida as far north as tampa. tomorrow morning more damage assessments will come out. so far they will say it was minor damage based on the previous assessments. it will give you the idea and intensity and width of
