brand-new polling today shows an ever tightening race in the key critical battleground states. according to the rasmussen report, president obama now has 47% of the vote. in 11 states compared to governor romney. 44%. again, these are 11 key states that president obama won back in 2008. these states are thought to be in play this year. rasmussen says these three states, florida, ohio, and virginia are the real most important ones. he says that these are the ones that will make or break the election. all three of these are too close to call right now. chris stirewalt is host a power play on fox news.com. and he is author of the people's money. guys, thank you very much for being here. let me start with you on this, scott. as i look through the polls, there are 11 states that we are
10:03 am
following closely. there are three in particular that we are watching. florida, ohio, and virginia. but scott, you tell me why you think this is significant. when i look at your 11 state averages, i still see that obama -- president obama is ahead in all but two of these. he is ahead in all that you. >> that is right. we are tracking these on a composite basis. to go forward and see where the trends are. four years ago, these 11 states combined, president obama won by seven points. right now he has a three-point edge. that means in places like ohio, virginia, florida, too close to golf. other states like michigan and pennsylvania. the president is still ahead. if these swing state numbers overall titan, that just means some of the states become more competitive for mitt romney. the reason we are focusing on these in addition to our national tracking poll of is the campaign feels much different. i live in new jersey and i don't see a lot of campaign ads.
10:04 am
the campaign is being up close and personal in the battleground states. megyn: in florida, you are showing that the politics average of all polls shows that president obama is ahead of florida by one point. in ohio he is ahead by 1.4 points. in virginia, have i not even one point. .6. you save that if the numbers move close to even, in these 11 states -- mitt romney would be heavily favored. why is that? >> because of a move close in all 11 states, that means the key states, florida, virginia, and ohio, are likely to move to romney's power. we shall composite score of 45. we show virginia with romney, meaninglessly -- if those numbers should involve come in
10:05 am
those three states become very difficult for president obama to keep his job. again, we are looking at overall trends. we are trying to see where this is going. the race will be a lot clearer two weeks from now after both parties have their convention. we will be watching. megyn: then we go forward into the debate. the polling shows that 6% of the voters in the swing states remain undecided. what decides their vote over the next couple of months? >> well, let's start with the broadest view on that. when he talks about a tie means a win for romney in those polls, the historical expectations, the expectations based on history and anything we know, is that late deciders breakaway from the incumbent. it doesn't always happen that way. on his character and other
10:06 am
things, it may deem him is unsuitable for his voters. if you know barack obama and you have waited and you still say that i'm not sure, i'm still holding out for more of those people, we would expect to see for romney then would break for obama. we like the challenger's position, whether it is for dog catcher or the president of the united states. megyn: what does it say for president obama? that four years ago? his margin was 53%. right now he is polling at 53%. he has lost ground in all of the states. what does that tell you? >> well, what it tells me is that the issues we will talk about, the republican national convention, it's a big deal. you will hear from chris christie and bob mcdonald. the governor of virginia. you will hear from kelly ayotte, senator.
10:07 am
you hear about cutting waste, worker overhead in their pension. performing and assisting government is something the voters in these states want to hear about. they want to talk about the president losing the ball on us. he had the ball and was doing great. talking about the change in washington. that is what chris christie is going to fire him up about tonight. i guarantee you. megyn: you and i have been talking about the money and how governor romney has a lot of money that can be spent on the general election. and wanted it to be about even with president obama. wanting to try to even another four regard to the final stretch. according to the polls, it appears he is doing now. gentlemen, thank you both so much. >> thank you. >> thank you. megyn: and other fox news weather alert. hurricane isaac moving towards the gulf coast. minutes ago we have a tornado

[ male announcer ] one pill each mornin hours. zero heartburn. megyn: we are getting new reports today in tampa that governor mitt romney plans to talk about his mormon faith during his big convention speech. when he takes the stage on thursday night, a top campaign adviser says the governor will discuss the five years that he spent as a bishop, pastoring to a congregation in massachusetts. laura ingram is a talk radio host and a fox news contributor and general star. she is here live in tampa. this is a headline because the conventional wisdom a while back was that he shouldn't talk about his mormonism because it might alienate some voters who don't
10:17 am
know mormonism or understand it and feel threatened by it. >> he began to open the door last week in an interview with raymond arroyo. he began to speak about his faith. in much greater depth than he had before. i think this is a really smart thing to do. rather than run away, this is what actually connects mitt romney to people who have been down on their luck. people who have a difficult marital struggles. as a leader of the church, he helped to minister to folks who are having a hard time. this was his introduction to the american people as a man. you hear a lot of people talk about, including him. this is an important moment for him and i think it's smart. megyn: there are a lot of people who are believers, no matter what their fate is. they are believers. they heard a narrative when the president sat in reverend wright's church for 25 years, that was an issue for them or
10:18 am
not -- is religion a scary place to go to for any candidate running for president? >> i don't think so for him. i think it's great you pointed out the reverend wright issue. that is a stark contrast to president obama who didn't really want to talk much about his fate. who kept at bay. a number of people looked into it, even though he was a confidante. he might have actually spoken more about reverend wright and clarified some things. mitt romney on thursday night, actually talk about why this makes him impart the man he is today. even evangelical voters who don't understand mormonism may understand compassion and they understand family. family roots run deep in the church. i think it is very tactically important as the moment for him. i think he needs to do that. remember, you will not see
10:19 am
president obama have the same connection. i think they have made a decision that he is going to go more into the kind of entertainment world or connect with women on policy. megyn: there is no question that mitt romney has a powerful fate. if you watch the people that talk about how the family reads scripture together. his family, they don't drink and smoke. they seem like clean-cut healthy living people. >> that is the late-night commentator here. megyn: you have the family that seems like the american family. living by these values. romney went out there and actually helped families in need and served as a pastor. it. >> humanity that is not connected to government.
10:20 am
we have been hearing a lot over the last couple of months about increasing food stamp rolls. increasing dependency on the government. 40% of americans now get some federal benefit directly. a lot of people say no taxes at all. this is an example of a man and his family, through his faith. that is something as a republican, that he could talk a lot about what the real meaning of courteous. that is the most effective charity that we see. most of it comes through the faith community, whether catholic or otherwise. megyn: back in the day, we used to just -- when i was a kid, my neighbor took care of me every wednesday afternoon because my mother had the waitress late that day. we didn't have day care amendments. we have that other neighbor. the other thing is there is a small fraction of americans, the gallup poll said 18%, but said that they would not vote for someone who happens to be a mormon that was well-qualified.
10:21 am
do you believe that those are folks who want to vote republican but won't in regards to the republican ticket? >> those people have emerged from a cave in a number of decades. [laughter] i don't know. we get hung up on the 18% or this or that. the main point of this election, romney will drown his vision for the future. they are going to represent that america's best days are ahead. we don't have to debase ourselves in order to improve as a people in a society. megyn: a lot of people say he's a vampire and doesn't care about people -- >> look for his family to embrace his goofiness. he is not mr. cool cat like obama. look for them to turn that supposedly gets into a big

>> there is another story on our alert buyers. the reuters news service is reporting that the white house is thinking about tapping the oil reserve as gas prices jumped sharply. in just the last month, the average price of gas spiked nearly 30 cents. to $3.76. shooting up in those gulf states, preparing for it increasing to the rest of the country. trace gallagher has more. live from l.a. reporter: if a hurricane is moving more quickly than those gasser for gas refineries, it could be a proble r. 80% of gas refineries have been shut down. clearly, we are seeing gas prices rise. in some cases, they are rising

and indefinitely. take a look at this. the entire state of louisiana hasn't been hit as hard in the past 24 hours. gas is only up 2.5% a gallon. in the same timeframe in new orleans, it has jumped 13 cents a gallon. gas stations in new orleans, as you might imagine, are swamped with people either planning to evacuate were wanting to make sure that they fill up their tanks just in case they need to evacuate and spare takes to tanks to do. as you see right there. >> i am filling up my car. i came here last night and they were out of gas to i thought, there's no one here, so i thought i'd jump in. reporter: in the past 24 hours from the gas prices nationally have gone up around 4 cents per gallon. the longer that the storm lingers, the more prices will go up. they expect about a 10-cent jump

hats. a group of people in yellow suits, not quite sure why. but there are. we are getting more and excitement from the floor. the action gets underway in less than 30 minutes now. right here. paul ryan is scheduled to take the main stage tomorrow night. yesterday, in an interview with their own bret baier. he launched a line of attack on the president. to the contract between the president obama plan, which has conflict with mitt romney's vision for a better future couldn't be clearer. what we want to do is highlight those contracts. megyn: he is talking about issues, including the debt. by the way, speaking of that, ron paul entered the arena here.
10:34 am
take a look at the numbers here. when we checked congressman kind's claims, we found that $5.3 trillion have been added to the debt during the president's term. listening to the chance for congressman ron paul. take a look, there he is. what the lay around his neck. given by the hawaiian delegation. we want to bring you the action in the debate. and a recent fox news poll finds that 57% believe that the u.s. and civilization is on the decline. should the president take all the blame on that? joining me now is lars larson. it was a syndicated radio host and julie baginski. let's take a look at the floor and why this is happening here. there are now dueling chants of ron paul and mitt romney. [cheers] megyn: you can see the congress
10:35 am
when making his way through. he said he is not fully endorsing mitt romney, but you can see that he showed up and has a lot of supporters. believing in his core message of liberty. among the many things, he is concerned about, it is the national debt and that is an issue for those who are on the republican ticket. my apologies for julie for interrupting your introduction. i want to talk about lars and julie. this new attack from congressman ryan. that seems to be the moniker. debt, doubt, and decline is how he identifies the obama presidency, right? >> megan, it sounds like you're having a lot of fun there. i have to tell you, i don't think it's an attack. it is a description of the obama administration. friendly, i subscribe to dinesh d'souza's theory, in 2016 that the president doesn't like the fact that america is a dominant country, economically blessed by god, and he wants to take us down a few notches. he can do that through debt and
10:36 am
regulation. he can do that through higher taxation. the fact is that he has been doing that for the last four years. the down part comes because a lot of businesses are sitting out there trying to figure out, do we expand or hire more people? can we afford to? until they know which way the government is going with its regulations and taxes, the average business can't do that. so i think it's more descriptive than an attack. megyn: julie, let's talk about, you can argue about doubt and decline. it's clear that those exist. people have those feelings in this country. but the death -- there is no question the president obama has huge amounts of debt since he's been in the white house. that is an issue for many reasons. not the least of which is the president's own promises when it came to the dead and how he promised us a different approach when he was running for office. listen up. >> the problem is that the way bush has done over the last eight years, it is to take out a
10:37 am
credit card from the bank of china in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion. number 43, adding $4 trillion. we now have over $9 trillion of debt. debt that we will have to pay back. 30,000 dollars for every man woman and child. that is irresponsible. it is unpatriotic. megyn: he said it was irresponsible and unpatriotic for president bush to a $4 trillion in eight years. he has added 5.3 trillion in 3.5 years. how can you make a credible argument to the american people when it comes to debt? >> there are two points. one is that he tried to have a bargain with the republicans. paul ryan is the one that said i don't want to do this. i don't want to help them. the second one is, if you and i
10:38 am
were making this argument, we would have no competition. and the third reason, the vote for the medicare prescription drug plan, which is not paid for -- for his argument their review is doing everything he possibly could. he did this. all of a sudden for him to come out and say, oh, we got the budget last year that would essentially one of run up the debt, hype it up even more because of taxes to the very wealthy -- that he doesn't know how to offset, the bottom line is this is not the right man to be making this argument. you can make the argument. i can make the argument. but not somebody devoted time and time again. megyn: now they are cheering again for the congressman to meet me. behind him and me. there are some good folks watching. they were campaigning let him
10:39 am
speak, let him speak just a moment ago. rand paul was scheduled to give an address. now with the compression of the schedule here in the wake of the hurricane. that is not clear. but you can see he has a lot of fans. paul ryan is now an effective spokesperson on this issue. >> as far as an effective spokesperson, and the americans recognize that he has the expertise. if anyone has seen the youtube video of him deconstructing the ovonic your plan, which by the way will add a chilly north of the doubt by itself, that is the thing we are up against. go ahead. >> that track record is not accurate. but go ahead. >> here's the thing. we have to get a handle on federal spending. when you talk about a grand bargain that includes higher taxes, taxes on everyone. taxes are laid on to the american people in proportion to
10:40 am
what they pay. half the american people don't pay anything. 47%. the other copy the entire bill. of course, the superrich pay the majority of the bill from the federal government. simply raising taxes and taking money out out of the private sector out of the private sector and handing it to drunken sailors of the united states government who spend like there's no tomorrow -- there isn't going to be a tomorrow if we don't slowdown in spending. giving them more money is like handing a case of jack daniels to an alcoholic. >> candido's comment on that? >> okay. >> first of all, you can't talk about cutting the debt and cutting taxes and city want a balanced budget. that one out. it would not apply macrolevel or micro level. the second part, which is obamacare comment that argument has been debunked. then when you are saying that. [talking over each other] [talking over each other]

megyn: and fox news alert. we have breaking news with new information on what is being described as an ambush in mexico. that injured two u.s. government workers. they were driving it in a diplomatic suv near mexico city. that is when another vehicle started chasing him and opened fire, leaving the vehicle littered with bullets. we are learning that 12 mexican federal police officers are under arrest and could face attempted murder charges. federal police officers. trace gallagher has been news live in our west coast newsroom. >> this is a major embarrassment for both mexico and the united states. they now have four different police vehicles that chased and shot at a u.s. embassy vehicle
10:55 am
that had diplomatic license plates. it did not explain how 12 police officers missed those diplomatic policies. we have spent $1.6 billion training those police officers and arming them to go after the cartel and not us. friday morning, two u.s. government workers were driving south to a mexican military facility. they were pursued by one mexican police car. when not hard raised its gone, three more cars joined the pursuit and opened fire with the intent to kill whoever was inside, two u.s. government workers were flown back to the united states. for now, the state department is being diplomatic. >> i'm not going to get ahead of the investigation. i think that we are going to wait and see what that concludes. nor am i going to get into
10:56 am
speculating on any of the specifics until we see what the investigation leads to. >> so those 12 police officers are being held for 40 days in mexico while the investigation goes on. please, one of the lawyers says they were chasing kidnap suspects are in who again failed to convey why they missed the diplomatic place in the u.s. embassy. megyn: that is unbelievable. trace gallagher, thank you. sharing two things with the viewers. mia love is ahead in the poll. number two, we will tell you more about this later. more importantly, the national weather service does give us new information coming in about hurricane isaac. this is bad news for new orleans. we have janice dean in three minutes. governor mitt romney as well. he called his wife and his inspiration. we will take a closer look at the relationship coming out.

megyn: fox news alert. the first full day of the republican national convention is now getting underway and it will likely end tonight with a barn burner from keynote speaker chris christie. welcome, i'm megyn kelly as they are gaveling in here at 2:00 p.m. eastern. chris christie is charged with putting the rom any campaign stamp on the republican party. he's known for his off-the-cuff, no holds barred style. let's look at what's happening on the stage so we can bring the sights and sounds to the viewers. >> welcome back to the 2012 republican national convention.
11:01 am
would everyone please rise for the presentation of the colors. the colors will be presented by the color corps of the knights of columbus headquartered in new haven, connecticut. megyn: they will have speeches from several members, baptist ministers, rob. >> -- rabbis ... chris christie is the keynote speaker tonight. this is a critical role. they give this to rising stars in the party or those who already made a name for themselves. here is a sample of chris christie's jersey attitude. >> you are not compensating me for my education and experience. >> then you don't have to do it. the simple fact of the matter is -- >> you know, tom, you must be the thinnest skinned guy in america. if you think that a
11:02 am
confrontational tone you should really see me when i'm pissed. have any of your children come home and said to you, mom, dad, please. talk to gail. first off, it's none of your business. i don't ask you where you send your kids to school, don't bother me where i send mine. i stood here respectfully and listened to you. if what you want to do is put on a show and giggle every time i talk, i have no interest in answering your question. it's people who raise their voices and yell and scream like you that are dividing this country. we are going to bring this country together, not divide it. get the hell off the beach in asbury park and get out. you are done. it's 4:30. you maximized your tan. get off the beach.
11:03 am
i'm coming down here sunday to see if there are any idiots on the beach to tell them to get the hell off the beach. megyn: brit hume is with us now. that's the man who will be the keynote speaker tonight. he's saying he will be himself and he may deviate from the script. >> reporter: my sense is he will go off script because he doesn't like to do the teleprompter. that's not when he's at his best. for him to be at his best he will want to be extemporaneous when he feels like it. he's a seasoned political performer. i don't think this is a worry he might blurt out something that will blow the convention. megyn: there may be be a worry but is there a hope? >> reporter: the thought is he will give a colorful powerful
11:04 am
speech. but he's there for what he has done. this is a man the republican party wants to be the reform party today. they have taken on to sacred cows. he has done that in new jersey and to some effect. he is there as an example of what i think governor romney and his associates want to be seen as the modern republican party. megyn: is he handicapped by the tone deficit. >> reporter: chris christie is not going to be up there making a lot of he's a serious guy with a serious message at a serious time. if there is a serious event going on i imagine we'll have appropriate remarks said about it, about what's going on in the gulf coast. but it's my sense that all that
11:05 am
is -- they are going to have to play that by ear as they go and make sure what they do is appropriate for the occasion. megyn: how much of his remarks are about making a king maker in much the same way barack obama made that speech in 2004 that catapulted him to stardom. is that the goal. apparently 40% of americans don't know chris christie. >> reporter: they did wonders for barack obama, but bill clinton made a terrible speech in atlanta in 1988. so bad when he said in conclusion the halle represented in applause. it didn't hurt him. it's a moment for any national politician where you can emerge as a larger figure than you were going in. megyn: he may be running towards 2016 if governor romney does not succeed this time or is this about a man who wants to see
11:06 am
mitt romney wind up in the oval office in january. >> reporter: i think the party's focus and his focus is on this election. i think he believes and his actions as governor, he believes we are in a time of serious economic and budgetary peril at the state and federal level and we need to get a handle on this before it's too late. i don't think he's talking about 2016 at the moment. megyn: part of his appeal is he's so plain spoken. he spells it out in a way normal americans understand. paul ryan can sort of talk about medicare in a way people can understand. but no one can implyify it the way chris christie can. can he do that tonight? do you think they will be more focused on barack obama or mitt romney. bring it require' worth noting they canceled the monday event. that was the night they laid out
11:07 am
their case against barack obama. that convention work still remains to be done. so one imagines chris christie won't be shy about that. obviously you know that's part of what you are saying. you have got to talk about the problems there are and why the incumbent is not the right person to solve them. that's a piece of this. i don't think we'll miss that with him. megyn: chris christie and ann romney tonight and paul ryan and mitt romney, marco rubio. who is the one you think will have the biggest impact after romney? >> reporter: you never know. every now and then somebody you expect will make a good speech gets up and makes a wowser of a knockout speech. megyn: sarah palin? >> reporter: sarah palin was the soul of that convention four years ago.
11:08 am
people forget this. her appearance at the news conference where they are selection was announced and the convention galvanized the republican party behind john mccain in a way many people didn't think was possible. megyn: the speech she gave in st. paul. one of the people who helped her write it is helping paul ryan write his speech. >> reporter: she was so new and her nomination was such a surprise, that moment had not worn out. paul ryan was what us for a -- was with us for a couple weeks. she came out of nowhere. that was as important a moment i have ever seen one person have at a convention. megyn: i remember standing in the press box at the time and you were in the anchor desk and she was going after the lame stream media and people turned towards the press box and

started booing. we have a lot of news going on, including this. hurricane isaac. we are getting new information right now. it's a category one storm. it is getting stronger and we are told better organized as it barrels towards the gulf coast. water levels rising from florida to louisiana raising fares about flood -- raising fears about flooding. the storm is massive, 400 miles wide. the latest bad news show isaac is getting ready to take a direct hit on new orleans. nearly 7 years to the day after hurricane katrina devastated the region. it's not expected to be as powerful as katrina. but it will be a test of the flood system put in place since katrina. the state says the levees are up to the task. >> reporter: we got this
11:10 am
2:00 p.m. advisory. we are expecting landfall sometime overnight tonight in and around the new orleans area. tornadoes are going to be a risk. we have tornado watches in effect for much of the gulf coast from southeast louisiana, alabama, the panhandle of florida and a watch that extends into much of louisiana. here is one of our reliable forecast models. the effects of this storm are going to be long lived. hurricane force winds, tropical storm force winds for 24-3 hours. storm surge 6-12 feet. we could see two high tides because of the slow mover and the rainfall. this is overnight tonight as the storm is continued to make its landfall, just west of new orleans, so they are going to get the worst of the rain. the worst of the storm surge, the worst of the winds. because it's on the right-hand side of where this storm is forecast to make landfall. heading into thursday getting

megyn: one of the most important speeches will come before the keynote address when ann romney steps up to the microphone. governor romney has called her his friend and inspiration. she'll need to inspire the 4 million people expected to be watching and help them see her husband through her eyes as a loving husband, father and
11:16 am
grdfather. it's a love story of faith and devotion that kept the romneys together for 43 years and helped them go through the long and sometimes difficult campaign. >> at the beginning i just loved her. now she is much more than the person i love. she is the person i live for. >> ann and mitt romney's story begins in bloomfield, michigan. ann davies was just 16 years old when mitt spotted her at a school dance. they had known each other for years but suddenly couldn't take their eyed off each other. she said she even turned down dates with mitt in order not to appear too eager. it worked. and soon they were a couple. a year later he moved to france for 2 1/2 years to perform his mormon missionary duties.
11:17 am
ann says she was inconsolable. despite their love the distance began to wear on the couple. ann began dating other men and told mitt about it in a letter. he vowed to win ann back. he returned home christmas eve 1968. ann was waiting at the airport. on the way home mitt proposed to the now 19-year-old ann and she immediately said yes. among the guests at hair reception then u.s. minority leader gerald ford. in 1970 the first of the couple's five sons was born. tagg was followed by matt, josh, ben and craig. >> growing up we all knew our mom and dad love each other have
11:18 am
much. they still do. she is one of his best supports on the campaign trail. he can get lonely without her. megyn: this may seem like a weird question. but how did you know they really loved each other. >> it's very clear, in their actions and words to each other. the way they treated each other. they always treated each on the were respect and dignity. we always knew. megyn: ann has spoken publicly about one of the toughest times in their marriage. she started to notice numbness on her right side. at age 49 ann was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. after the diagnosis she said she felt like giving up on life. but with the support of her husband she learned to manage her disease and refocus on her family. chris wallace recently traveled to the romney's vacation home in new hampshire. he asked what ann means to him.
11:19 am
>> ann is my counselor, my friend, my inspiration, and also person i love. if i have any time available and people say what would you like to do? what i would like to do is, ann and be together. >> not a bad guy. >> that's pretty good. megyn: kevin madden is a romney senior campaign visor. we are told he -- campaign advisor. we are told he has read ann romney's speech. i want to get to the speech in a moment. but that's a piece of their story a lot of people don't know about. their deep love for one another. their long 40-plus year love affair. how important ann romney is to mitt romney in his life professionally and personally. >> i think what's important to governor romney's success and this is something a lot of people across the country can sort of understand, which is
11:20 am
that behind every good man is an incredible woman. what she has done to make sure they had stability in the household and how she is a great mother and great wife is in part what made governor romney successful. when people get a chance to see that. it resonates. megyn: our band is warming up. hope tonight viewers can hear. the campaign said when he goes for too long a time without her on the campaign trail he starts to get agitate and you can see it. so the campaign arranges to make sure the two of them see each other every so often and you can see the change in him. >> you can sight. i remember one time where we had a debate up in new hampshire. and the governor had gone a long time without seeing ann. and i remember being worried about this particular debate,
11:21 am
the polls were getting tight and it was an important time in the campaign. i was having such a hard time calming myself down. i remember walking into the hall before we got to the debate and i saw ann and the governor sitting there with their family talking about everything but the debate. i knew that night the debate would be great, and it was. she helps him focus. she helps him realize. and that's important how the governor has helped focus his message. she also offers an incredible amount of perspective what she hears from voters across the country. the anxieties people face on a daily basis. that's been important for the governor in this campaign. megyn: she talked about her interview with chris wallace. she goes to costco, she does the laundry. there was no staff at their home. they live like regular folks.
11:22 am
though he has been very successful. i want to talk to you about how she brings that image home when she takes to the stage tonight. we'll do that after the break. this is a man who read the speech. i'll be getting to the bottom of that next. are you receiving a payout from a legal settlement

megyn: welcome back live to the rnc in tampa as official business is underway. just in case you are wondering if you are missing anything, they are electing adoption of temporary officers. if you care to watch that you can at foxnews.com. meanwhile we'll continue live with kevin madden, a senior campaign adviser to the romney campaign. you flew in with the governor and ann romney today. what's his state of mind?
11:26 am
>> very relaxed and excited about this opportunity. this has been a long campaign. the governor is used to a lot of this. he's very excited about talking directly to the american public. the public is coming into focus and starting to tune into this campaign and listen. they know there is a big choice at hand. i think the governor seize that as an incredible opportunity. megyn: what about ann romney? she hasn't don't as many times as he has. >> she is the coolest. she is not big on teleprompters. but it's an opportunity to sort of i think gain some comfortability with that and that's what she has been working on. megyn: so you have seen the speech. >> i'll let ann romney be the one ... i'll give you a hint -- i think it will be an incredible testimony.
11:27 am
people get to see the candidate romney. they heard about the romney who led the olympics. but a lot of people haven't heard about mitt romney the father, husband and grandfather. i think that's what ann is going to be able to bring, to talk about this person she has known for so long. the qualities he has. the person she fell in love with. and how all of that is important for the american people when they are going to look to make a decision about who they trust to turn the country around. this an important decision for the american people. ann romney will be able to speak to that. megyn: there is a question about whether she will address their mormon faith and his time as a minister helping people. >> their faith is importantth them and it's important to her and mitt's faith informs him and has made him a better leader,
11:28 am
husband and father. megyn: is there anything we need to know before we watch the speech? >> i think she is excited to do this. i haven't seen any nerves yet. megyn: are the boys nervous about their mom? >> i think they are. they love their mom and dad so much they want them to do well. if there are any nerves it has to be with tagg and josh. megyn: we got word in the last hour that. >> i sake now a full-blown hurricane and it's head for new orleans right now. nearly 7 years to the day after hurricane katrina hit the region. but the impact will be felt well beyond new orleans. we are live in the big easy. he's not even old enough to vote but he's attracting a lot of attention at the republican national convention. the youngest delegate here.
11:29 am
he will tell us how he earned a spot on the big stage here in tampa. we built it is a major theme. fallout from the president's comments about you didn't build that. we'll look at how that work and we'll show you what to expect from a busy afternoon here in tampa. behind me you can see governor romney's native state of michigan has a prominent place on the convention floor as well as massachusetts where romney was governor. new hampshire where they have a home. and ohio, critical. no republican has ever won the white house by not winning that swing state. wisconsin also thanks to paul ryan's addition to the ticket. at 5:20 all of these states will begin the official process of casting their votes in favor of these two men.
11:30 am
when they get to the magic number mitt romney will officially be the republican nominee for president.
11:31 am
11:32 am
11:33 am
>> it's important to say that our thoughts are with our fellow americans down on the gulf. they are preparing for the new orleans guy right here -- they are obviously preparing for a big storm, hurricane isaac. we have been getting ready for
11:34 am
this storm for days. we have response teams and supplies in place. america will be there to help folks recover no matter what this storm brings because when disaster strikes, we are not democrats or republicans first, we are americans first. [cheers and applause] we are one family and we help our neighbors in need. [cheers and applause] megyn: president obama cautioning residents along the gulf coast moment ago as isaac becomes a category one hurricane. winds topping 75 miles per hour bringing the threat of massive storm surge, rains and flooding along the low-lying areas of the gulf coast. but new orleans is in isaac's cross-hairs. 7 years to the day after hurricane katrina began to devastate this city. jonathan serrie is live in new orleans with the latest.
11:35 am
>> reporter: that storm surge already having an impact. look at color of the water. it's ocean green normally. the mississippi is brown and muddy. the ocean is pushing the ocean water upstreams. it reversed the flow of around new orleans. the water has risen four feet. the barges you see along the stretch of the mississippi, you don't see them today. that has a huge impact on commerce. listen. >> the river has been totally closed since 9:00 a.m. central time. that's a huge consequence. for every single day the mississippi river is closed in new orleans the detrimental economic impact to the united states is $300 million a day and that number grows exponentially after fourth day due to the loss of supply and demand. >> reporter: the army corps of engineers closed the interharbor
11:36 am
navigational canal. this was built after hurricane katrina. it's part of the $14 billion plus renovations and repairs that went into the levee system protecting new orleans. most residents we spoke with said they are optimistic the levees will hold in place. it will be the first real storm event putting the levees to the test. megyn: jonathan serrie, thank you very much. >> if you were successful somebody along the line gave you some help. there was a great teacher somewhere in your life. somebody helped to create this unbelievable american system that we have that allows you to thrive. somebody invested in roads and businesses. if you have got a business, you didn't build that. somebody else made that happen.
11:37 am
megyn: that now infamous comment re-emerging as a theme. "my girl" is underway on the floor of the convention. the band playing and the delegates starting to dance and enjoy themselves a little bit. they are coming together for the party. it's ironic, that remark by the president galvanized the republican party it many built into the theme here. the theme for the convention is "we did build that." one of tonight's performers wrote a song called "i built it." but will voters be able to relate to this message? was it wise to elevate it to this level? joining me is joe trippi and ed rollins. he was campaign director for the
11:38 am
bush ticket. it's great to see you. hopefully you can hear me. it's difficult. there is no plexiglas. i want to ask you, ed. with that comment by president obama and the fallout from it elevated by the republicans at this convention. >> if it hadn't been part of his policy the past several years web's a believer in big government. he's not a believer in doing the kind of things to create small business and big business. that line which i'm sure he wishes he had back gave it a forum. this convention using this term is about telling a narrative. and the narrative is the republicans want to fix this economy by fixing small businesses and giving them stability. megyn: joe, i want to ask you. the music is in my ear. a lot of times the president
11:39 am
says, well, that comment was faken out of context. when the president said you didn't build that he was talking about roads and bridges. of course, we didn't exactly build that. it was the government. we used our taxpayer dollars. he says that's what i was talking about. this piece of his remarks potentially more problematic. listen to the president expand on you didn't build that. >> if you have been successful you didn't get there on your own. you didn't get there on your own. i'm always struck by people who think, well, it must be because i was just so smart. there are a lot of smart people out there. it must be because i worked harder than everybody else. let me tell you something. there are a whole bunch of hard working people out there. megyn: they will play on that here tonight. >> i believe it was taken out of context and it wasn't what he meant. but it doesn't matter. when you are in a campaign like
11:40 am
this if you give your opponent something to throw at you they are going to throw it back. i think the republicans are right to make it a political theme of the convention here. but if they drive it too hard it's a mistake. what romney needs to do here is what ed said, produce a narrative. but the narrative that ann romney is going to tell about a husband, a father and grandfather. tell the positive story america hasn't heard. they have millions of dollars of ads they will be able to run negatively against the obama campaign. they need to tell romney's story and get it out to the american people. megyn: they will do that. governor christie to do that. ann romney is going to do that tonight. but do you expect it to hammer. is governor christie going to go to the you didn't build that place or is that just a backdrop. >> governor christie is looking forward to the battle as he
11:41 am
always is. i think to a certain extent -- he needs to tell the story correctly and not make about simply bashing the president. the backbone of america and tour free enterprise system has always been small business. roads have been built by small businesses, too. highway guys, construction guys. but the critical thing is there have been thousands and thousands of stories of people who have come and succeeded because they worko worked extraordinarily hard, generations upon generations who worked in stores, cleaners, all the things that created this great country ours. that should be salute and honored and not feel you have got to have government do everything for you. that's the case we are trying to make here. megyn: joe, as you look forward to this evening and the big speeches aren't ann romney and governor christie.
11:42 am
i want to ask you about tonight. governor christie and ann romney. which one of those speakers do you view as a bigger threat to president obama's poll numbers? >> no question about it. ann romney. governor christie is going to do the we didn't build that. i think it will be a political speech. ann romney -- the romney campaign hasn't been able to get out his positive side of the story. it was interrupted during the primaries during the opponents. the obama campaign has done a great job of keeping them off stride. today this convention is the chance. and ann romney is the right person to deliver it. if that message gets lost in this convention i believe it will be a failed one. if her message gets out and they successfully reposition romney as someone who will fight for you. not just the rich. she can undo the caricature and
11:43 am
create a new narrative. that's what they need to start doing here. megyn: thank you both so much. see you soon. he's making headlines at the republican national convention. at 17 he's the youngest delegate here. too young to even cast a ballot in november. what got him so interested in politics while he was still in medical school? the teenaged delegate joins me live next.
11:44 am
so, what's the problem? these are hot. we're shipping 'em everywhere. but we can't predict our shipping costs. dallas. detroit. different rates. well with us, it's the same flat rate. same flat rate. boston. boise? same flat rate. alabama. alaska? with priority mail flat rate boxes from the postal service. if it fits, it ships anywhere in the country for a low flat rate. dude's good. dude's real good. dudes. priority mail flat rate boxes. starting at just $5.15. only from the postal service.
11:45 am
11:46 am
megyn: at 17, he's the youngest delegate in tampa. the high school senior active in politics for years. you are only 17 years old. but you turn 18 before november
11:47 am
and that means you can be a delegate. >> yes. megyn: how did you get that coveted spot? the former chairman of the republican party wanted it and you beat him. >> republican voters understand president obama's policies have impacted younger voters disproportionately. they wanted a younger delegate coming down to tampa to find an answer to those issues. megyn: we have been led to believe that young people don't like mitt romney and young people tend to vote democratic and not republican. >> i think four years ago that was the case. young voters overwhelmingly supported this president. but now we have a 12.7% unemployment rate. half of college graduates are moving back with their parents and many entering college are finding it hard to find the
11:48 am
student loans they need. so a lot of younger voters i think have become apathetic this time around because they feel last time they support sad candidate who let them down. megyn: do you bring this message into your high school? >> i do. one of the reasons why young voter aren't as interested in this election because the debate has not been tailored towards them. that's why mitt romney and paul ryan are great candidates. they speak to the two issues young voters care about most. mitt romney with his private sector experience is a great spokesman on the economy and economic issues and paul ryan on fiscal responsibility is a great spokesman on the debt and how to reduce that burned on future generations. president obama is sidestepping these two issues and talking about a war and women and the social issues. i feel the real war on women is the war on mothers who have spent years prying to give their
11:49 am
children a more prosperous successful future. and it's being mort gaged away by a federal government. megyn: how did you get this articulate at age 17? >> i have involved parents. megyn: you are telling me your dad is here with you. you dragged him, he didn't drawing. >> my parents are supportive and they followed me and tried to encourage my passion and that has driven them into politics. megyn: most kids are worried about sports or girls or whatever. what gave you the politics bug? >> i'm a secretary-generalration american. my family grew up in hungary and came over to the united states as displaced persons and political refugees. they came over here to win for their descendants the economic freedom and individual liberty
11:50 am
they lacked in their home. i feel it's my duty to preserve the sacrifices they made for me to make sure those values american principles are there for me and my children. megyn: when i was 17 i don't think i could put two sentences together. arguably still cannot. do you practice this? do you do debates? >> i have a lot of extracurricular activity at my high school. i'm the captain of the debate team. megyn: of course you are. i know you met some of the romney sons and some of the party delegates while you are here. >> i have. everyone is supportive of me and trying to understand my perspective. they treated me as an adult. i found my views are valuable and i appreciate that. megyn: everyone appreciates your commitment to the political process. >> thank you so much for having me.
