not only important in the new sense but the business sense. most consequencial, economic and financial election of our time. i say well, if you are going to say that, prove it. you better mean it. better put the hours in to it. we are. we will. we mean it. >> greg: hello. i'm the tampa tad pole greg gutfeld along with kimberly guilfoyle, bob beckel, eric bolling, she is america's travel pillow. dana perino. it's 5:00 in tampa, florida. 3:00 a.m. in ellen barkin empty skull. this is "the five." the show is packed tighter than a delegate fanny pack. let's do this, america. ♪ ♪ >> greg: so last night's speeches were a one-two punch straight at the dems' jaw. first, ann romney talked about life as a newlywed. >> we got married and moved in to a basement apartment.

we walked to class together. shared the housekeeping. ate a lot of pasta and tuna fish. our desk was a door propped up on saw horses. our dining room table was fold-down ironing board in the kitchen. but those were the best days. >> greg: if you dismiss that as cute nothing, you miss the point, ladies, which is it's better to marry a man not a program. obama wants government to be your hubby and suggests you are better off with a partner, not a sitter. husband may snore at night and sad he still likes the "three stooges" but entitlement program can't laugh at that same joke you tell at every party and can't hold your hand going through the cancer treatment. entitlement program could never look this good in a suit. so especially if the left hated that speech, they know a night with acorn is no one's idea of romance. chris christie followed condemning empty rhetoric that

invites division. >> the people have no patience for any other way anymore. it's simple. we need politicians to care more about doing something and less about being something. >> greg: his message was clear. enough. time to grow up. santa claus must go. so the summary, it's better to be loved by a spouse than a program. it's better to be respected by a country than loved by the media. a message that strikes at the root of the liberal spine. target so brittle it could be a helping, sister. if the country was listening it may well snap on election day. so, dana, you claim to be a woman. >> dana: yes. >> greg: how do you think ann did? >> dana: she was a vision. >> greg: she was. >> dana: warmly embraced by the crowd. arguably the most important speech she has ever given. think of the pressure on her is almost more than what mitt romney pressure is. even was like you have to explain mitt romney to us. it's clear she is dearly loved by him and she loves him very

much. i think the speech was great. but not fantastic. and i think part of that is that america has wildly high expectations that their politicians should be like celebrities. but on a movie set you can ask for a couple of different takes to make shire you hit the line just right. if you look at the substance of her speech and i encourage people to reread it, look at it again. well done. well crafted. i think she met the goal but didn't exceed it. >> greg: you're saying you could have done a better job. nice. eric, you were on the floor for the speech. what was it like? >> eric: i agree with dana. safe speech. good speech. i'll tell you a lot of people, a lot of young people -- kimberly was down there, too. a couple of us were down there. young people holding signs "we love you, ann." they are embasing ann romney. a real asset for him. but a safe speech. that's okay. when you are winning the game, you don't need to throw the hail mary pass. >> greg: bob, did you learn anything new about mitt

romney? >> bob: first, let me say some people have given her a little bit of a hard time about seeming nervous. i have addressed two conventions. is it a tough job. >> bob: as a potential -- >> dana: as a potential first lady? >> bob: no. potential first dog. it's very tough to do. reading a teleprompter, they take people in there and practice there in the afternoon. to an empty crowd. then everybody is like now i know what i'm doing. you go in there with a full crowd. people mulling around. she did what she needed to do. it's a little of a reach to imagine mitt romney eating off of an iron board. outside of that, i think it was -- >> dana: i think that is totally believable. >> bob: you do? >> dana: yes. >> greg: you iron off a dining plate which is really weird. >> bob: i don't iron. >> greg: true. kimberly, i want to play you a s.o.t. from ann's speech talking about the importance of bag mom. you are a mom. why don't we listen to this a hopefully you'll have something intelligent to say. >> kimberly: i hope so. i'll try. >> it's the moms who have

always had to work harder to make everything right. the working moms. who love their jobs. but would like to work a little less to spend more time with the kids. >> you are the one ones that hae to do a little bit more. you are the best of america. you. [ applause ] you are the hope of america. there would not be an america without you. tonight, we salute you and sing your praises. [ applause ] >> greg: what do you think? >> kimberly: i loved it. we salute you. the moms are the fabric of what holds this country together. they raise the family. if you strip away the cash, ann romney is just like any of us, the mothers out here, where you have a child. bob and i were talking about this on the bus ride on the way over to take your child to the emergency room. you want to make sure they have a good life. go to school, take care of them, comfort them when they come home from a hard day at

school or the playground. these are relatable things. it doesn't matter how much money you have or how little you have. those are the values and the shared themes that mothers connect with across the country. that makes her very -- >> bob: you know what is -- >> dana: can i say one thing? there is not a woman in america who doesn't think if i had half an hour more in my day i could do "x," "y" or "z," all the pressures that you have pulling you from the children side and parents' side. keep your marriage together, work, look great. women.those things are that was maybe one of the best lines of the speech. >> bob: a lot of guys this morning woke up with elbows in their ribs sitting there watching their wives. she got it right. men pretty much are blunt instruments anyway, as we know. i don't think it's a bad thing, by the way. you can imagine watching that and after she said that, the wife went yeah, you sop of a -- >> greg: before i move on. you want to say something? >> eric: i want to talk about christie. >> greg: i want to -- >> bob: yeah, we got to talk about it.

>> greg: segment of the speech when he was discussing the, i guess the teachers unions. >> they believe establishment will put themselves ahead of children. the self-interest will trump common sense. they believe in pitting union against teachers, educators against parents, lobbyists against children. they believe in teachers unions. we believe in teachers. >> greg: what do you think? >> eric: it was really, it was a big entrance. he came out and people were standing. there was a lot of people looking for, you know, the attack, the chris christie attack, taking apart whether it's a journalist or teachers union. they didn't get that. they got chris christie who talked about himself for a good 15-20 minutes and went on to talk about leadership. telling the american people what they need to hear. not what they want to hear. fantastic speech. we'll make note of one thing in the whole speech, he did not mention barack obama's name once. not once. >> greg: i hate to say it,

but bob predicted that. i disagreed with you. >> bob: it was strategically, smart thing to do. it will get through the romney campaign head here at one point that people decided about barack obama. it's done. you're not -- few people undecided. first, half of them aren't going to vote. there are some weak voters on each side that may move. this is thousand abmitt romney make -- this is now about mitt romney making the sale. 47% that obama has could easily go to 51% with a turn-out. unless mitt romney stirs people up and gets them out there. the other thing i'd say, it looked like chrisieie had chains on and he wanted to lash out. let me say this. that was one of the cheap shots that this guy who i like -- the thing about democrats care about unions than we do about kids. don't say it that way. >> bob: he said teachers, not kids. especially so, a cheap shot from a cheap shoter. >> kimberly: i think something has been very clear so far throughout the

convention. the civility. you didn't see ann romney or christie or the other speakers so far addressed the convention delegates speak in any terms that were negative. doing any kind of attacks against the democrats. i think that is a tone that should be taken and continueed throughout the convention. the question remain will we need professionalism and civility by the democrats? >> bob: let me tell you why that is the case. when you have higher negatives, negatives campaigning bounces back against you. right now, they need to not attack obama. they need to make a case for mitt romney. nif attacks this is a smart strategic decision. they attack obama. >> kimberly: are you saying the democrats will go negative because they have to attack romney? >> bob: of course they will. >> greg: dana, i want to ask you -- >> bob: i'll lead the way. >> greg: -- do you think the christie speech more about christie than romney? >> bob: good point. >> dana: no, it was about effective governing and how you can be a republican

governor in a very democratic heavy state. and still get some things done and start to turn things around like on the budget that he has to balance, most governors do, required to balance the budget. he did not raise taxes. the number of 15 times in the last four years before he got there, they raised taxes. one thing about the speeches they are on too late for me. i don't know how anyone has energy at 10:30 to give speech like that. >> greg: you fell asleep at the bar. >> dana: i was slumped, not sleeping. >> kimberly: maybe it was the company she had. >> bob: i got a sense that christie, a lot about chris christie. more about christie. not much about obama. very little about romney. >> eric: the first 15, 20 minutes he talked a long time, 15 minutes or so, he talked about his accomplishments. by the way, they are fantastic. he took on the teacher unions and he took on the public sector contracts.

when he didn't have to. some of the things that hit down the line, hit after he was governor. then he turned it and said this is why america needs mitt romney. >> bob: the difference, he had solutions, if you buy the solutions. i don't burglarly, but he didn't say what romney would do. >> bob: he needed to drop -- >> greg: he needed to drop a bomb. >> kimberly: you were standing next to governor walker. at the time you were watching christie. >> eric: i was watching christie while governor scott walker standing there. had a nice conversation with him. wisconsin is now -- let me use another term. geopolitical center of the world. everything is happening in wisconsin. scott walker, rebecca kleefisch and a strong contingency. >> dana: one other piece of advice that the speakers need to hear. their speeches are five minutes too long. they just got to pare it back a little bit. you run out of steam as a listener. >> greg: maybe take a nap in the afternoon.

>> bob: we saw an important change of guard for republicans. you saw a handoff that used to be mccain, dole, that old crowd. now you saw the young people coming up. i said this to democrats this morning. we used to own the bench. we don't own the bench now. be careful. >> kimberly: defense now. >> eric: there are really last thought, there are really great energy coming from ted cruz. he had a fantastic speech. arturo davis. mia love. >> bob: republicans need to get rid of that. >> greg: we got to go. coming up, can you get it from barack obama -- all right. the g.o.p. may have the next big star after a new face delivers a rousing speech last night. >> this is our story. this is our america. this is the america we know because we built it. will run in full from two former presidents. my former boss. two former first ladies. four republicans who led many conventions and unbelievably looked better and younger every year they're out there. yet, tonight is about the future. greg, before we talk about paul ryan you want to mention something? >> greg: there is going to be another surprise guest video from president obama who is going to come out. he will announce he is not endorsing himself. >> dana: that would be weird. make convention history. >> greg: it will be. very exciting. >> dana: con vention history. paul ryan, 42 years old, going to give a speech called "the new intellectual father of conservatism and the republicans." big speech for him tonight. biggest speech of his life. let's take a look at it. >> i never planned this for my life. i wasn't one of those people who had my life mapped out. i love the study of economics and i thought that's what i'd do with my life. i decided to run for office at a young age, 28. i was formnate enough to get elected. people here -- i was fortunate

enough to get elected. people have been good to me and i tried to live up to their trust. to be standing on the hill where my kids shred and bowl i ran track and talk to you about the issue at this moment in our country is profound for me. >> dana: bob, ask you a question. for paul ryan tonight with the crowd, do you think it makes him nervous? boosts him up? >> bob: i have been trying to be a good guest at this continue. >> kimberly: somehow that working out? >> bob: i continue to do that. he's under pressure. he in effect will define himself to 80% of the country who didn't know who he was. the problem i think is that when you say the new intellectual leader, new conservative movement. it will become clear and clear that paul ryan is so far to the right he makes mitt romney look like moderate -- >> dana: is that may what they told you to say on the

call? >> bob: i don't do that. >> dana: if you look at something in "washington post" today it said why republicans are winning the fight against paul ryan. one thing they do, they say word association. if you think of paul ryan what do you think? one word was "extreme." down 11 or 12th. "competent." "intelligent." those were at the top. >> eric: he is extreme because he wants to cut the deficit? he's extreme because he wants to do things that most people on both sides of the aisle haven't had guts to do? he talks to you like you are an adult. by the way, before you jump on this, the most interesting tv i think going forward is going to be october 11 of 2012. that is when paul ryan will debate joe biden on all things -- >> bob: when you talk about this guy being a changer. it's true that they haven't won the paul ryan argument. whoever wrote that -- >> dana: i'm just telling glue the "washington post" wrote that. >> bob: they're wrong. >> dana: based on poll they have seen.

>> bob: the poll is dead wrong. in wisconsin it matters. moved them a couple points. outside of that, paul ryan moved not one point in battleground states. >> dana: our point is vice presidents never do that. >> bob: right. >> dana: enthusiasm and turn-out, do you think -- >> kimberly: i think he has had significant impact. people expected him to fall flat-footed on this in terms of the selection for paul ryan. i think it's turned out to be quite a benefit for mitt romney. he is going to do an excellent job speaking. this is somebody who cares and wants to do the job. he wants to earn his paycheck, that the american people are rewarding him with. he's not saying i'll take a pass on this. he wants to take chances. he wants to be bold. that is why i think mitt romney chose him. he is a man of intelligence and man of integrity. mitt romney said if his father was here today what is the advice to give him? be bold and make tough choices, show leadership. that's what we'll see tonight. >> greg: what is his role? ryan is going to do what i

guess a lot of people expected christie to do. he is kind of like that black light flashlight they use on the hotel beds to look for dirt. >> kimberly: i saw them in your room this morning. >> greg: thank you. he is the black light flashlight and the bed is the obama policies. he is a guy that has to go out an specifically underline why voting four more years of obama is like a house re-elec re-electing termites. >> bob: better hope he doesn't turn light on himself. that's where the dirt will come out. >> kimberly: what is dirty about paul ryan. >> dana: you think he is a dirty politician? >> bob: no. dirty about his policies. >> eric: what? >> dana: we're going to continue the tortured metaphors. >> eric: a lot of things, interestingly, they pick which location on the floor. swing state, up front. wisconsin continues to be right there. the point i'm trying to make is paul ryan brings the midwest vote to romney with wisconsin, michigan and -- >> dana: maybe ohio. >> eric: all right there up front.

>> bob: there hasn't been a vice president since lyndon johnson -- not one state. >> eric: willing to do something about it. >> bob: vice presidents don't matter. >> dana: okay. what if everybody is wrong? can we talk about another person? tonight, the republicans favorite daughter conde rice will give a speech. she was on "fox and friends" this morning. do we have that? >> i want mitt romney to be elected president. that's why i'm here. that's why i've been out trying to help. i am going to talk about america at home and abroad. the need for america to speak with a voice that the world can hear. but a need for america to rebuild at home, too. because the essence of american exceptionalism is who we are here. >> dana: kimberly, tonight, condi rice talk about foreign policy. not the most burning issue but important for commander-in-chief and she will speak on romney's behalf. >> kimberly: she will speak with authority. she is greatly admired by both

parties and a significant choice to have her there and have the backing. i love the picture there with mitt romney. this is a type of leadership we want going forward, right, in the party? to have people like her represent women so well. be an asset. >> bob: can i say a point about her. she wrote one of the best pieces on professional football, better than any man i've ever seen. written about concussions and how to change the game. she always wanted to be the n.f.l. commissioner and she ought to be. very thoughtful. >> dana: there is nothing that she can't do. >> greg: you know what is great about condoleezza rice? code pink tried to arrest her for war crime. anybody that ticks off code sink awesome. >> kimberly: your hero. bob. former congressman arthur davis vocal supporter of obama in 2008. why did he show up to the republican convention last night? take a listen. >> may it be said that of this time in our history, 2008 to

>> dana: why were you looking down shaking your head at that? >> bob: for two reasons. one, i think she is a dynamic speaker. no question about that. the real issue we're talking about here is why is it that african-americans have not made republican inroads with the african-americans? even among middle class and upper class blacks which remain 93 to 95%. it doesn't seem to be anything -- the best was george w. bush and he only picked up 8%. part of the reason is if you look at this, first of all, i have to make this point. after all that talk about we built this, that hall was built with 70% taxpayer money she talked about. >> greg: taxpayer money. so we built it. >> bob: we did. >> greg: my money. >> bob: i think what they need to do at the state level is beginning to change their rules. if you look out at that delegation, there are so few black delegates out there. that is a problem. >> dana: so then why when there is somebody like her that comes up, electrifies the

crowd, they look down and shake her head like i can't believe she is saying that. she has independent thought. i am so frustrated with the group on the left, i don't think i realized it until now you could have somebody like that and everyone look at her, like she doesn't speak for african-american. she is an individual. >> greg: i'll tell you why. she is a black conservative woman. the only thing that scares liberals in the "new york times" editorial board more i isvate and arugula shortage. i love her name. mia love. she is the best shot republicans have to remind america lincoln was a republican. all the policies from the democrats have done nothing but infantize a race. >> bob: let me try to explain my point. my point about that is not looking down at her. it was somebody who is that good. what surprises me, not able to draw in, the party does not draw in more people to hear

an african-american congressman who was a democrat and decided it's not working for me on this side. i'm going to become a republican. >> greg: no longer interested in your product. >> dana: in the african-american community unemployment rate stayed at a very high rate in the past four years. it doesn't necessarily mean that anything will change but i think the republican party made good inroads. arthur davis is somebody who again, electrified the crowd. i watched it on television. in the hall. people got to their feet when he was speaking because they like the message, they like the delivery. >> bob: the message and the delivery were good but it begs the question again why is it that you can't then draw people to republican party? >> greg: because they have been putting up all of your crap. the democrats have been brainwashing people that the republicans weren't the party of slavery -- >> bob: we have been singing this song for six months. >> greg: who started the k.k.k., bob? it wasn't the republicans.

you want to see the liberal response to artur davis and mia love? msnbc, propaganda arm of jeanne garoffalo chose to run commercials instead of speeches because they're terrified of the idea and the viewers are cowardly to face the fact there are black conservatives. >> bob: well, yes, that may be true about msnbc but dana pointed out the unemployment rate. if there is any group in america with more difficult economic time than blacks do, you would think -- think -- >> greg: how did that happen? >> bob: all i'm saying it would seem to me somehow when you have that kine of problems you would tend to move partie parties. i'm saying i don't understand why. >> kimberly: they are trying to work with the minority community and african-american community to encourage them this is the party of opportunity embracing them.

i'm bret baier in tampa. the republican national convention. the big story here today is the anticipation over paul ryan's acceptance speech as nominee for vice president and reaction to mitt romney's address last night. tonight on "special report," mitt romney ducked out of tampa this morning to go to indianapolis. speech to the american legion convention. carl cameron is traveling with him. president obama in virginia this afternoon but his focus lately has been on social issues and not the economy. talk with house speaker john boehner about the election, ryan's speech and what is and is not happening in congress. at least one death is being reported from hurricane isaac. we'll show you what it's doing on the gulf coast now a tell you where it's headed next. plus, shannon bream talks with ann romney the day after her big speech. paul ryan on why he is more qualified to be commander-in-chief than barack obama four years ago.
