never said you couldn't. and so boy, you just started with different odds than the rest of use my parents didn't believe there are victims but believed if you worked hard. saying you have to be dwis twice as good. waits a matter not of debate but a statement about the truth as they saw it. and they just really believed in this country and it's values at a time when for black people in the south those values weren't very much evident. i'm grateful i had such terrific parents. >> greta: i'm going to ask questions about what you said tonight. one of the things you said is that question of the moment is where does america stand? >> yes. >> greta: i'm curious what provoke that had question? >> as i look around the world, particularly for instance in the middle east where we're seeing the horrors in syria and we see really the young iraqi democracy with little attention to it by the united states and see an afghanistan we seem to be in a big hurry to get out.

we are, i think are provoking that question among our friends and foes. it's not a good question. the united states has to be resolute. people have to believe we'll finish jobs we begin. >> greta: are you saying president obama and vice president biden are not doing that? they're not answering that question? and what makes you so certain the governor romney, if elected president and vice president paul ryan would do that? >> there is no dourt our voice has been a muted one in several years. maybe a sense when america speaks loudly, people will not follow us. but what we're seeing is that when america doesn't speak, people don't know twho follow. bad things start to happen. i believe that governor romney and congressman ryan understand first and foremost whoer. we are. they know we're a country that if we put our minds to it

we'll solve our debt problems and economic problems and they know we have to be leaders in the world. i do think that they'll speak in a way that let's people know where america stands. >> greta: have you a rich experience if foreign policy. for years secretary of state and worked at the white house. have these gentlemen have foreign policy experience? president obama didn't have foreign policy experience. does that give you any reason to pause? you've thrown your support behind this ticket tonight. >> foreign policy decision making is like almost any other. you have to have principles and values and people who know how to take a tough decision to ask expert people around them for answers to tough questions and i see those characteristics in mitt romney with his executive experience and paul ryan with his toughness on insisting on our fiscal responsibility. the truth is that not many

american presidents come into office with foreign policy experience, what to do about china or russia or iran, what will come. you want someone who has integrity and knows what america can mean in the world, someone who is prepared to lead. and the rest of it will soon take care of itself. >> greta: any doubt on who should be president? >> no. no doubt. no. >> greta: you were instrumental when george w. bush ran for president you'd advise him on foreign policy. are you informally advising in this ticket? the republican ticket? >> i've tun my service in the campaign. i was deeply involved in 2000. i talked to governor romney from time to time. we're friends. i certainly feel i can call him at any time and he calls from time to time but he has good people around him. in foreign policy advising that is not a role for me this

time around. >> greta: he said tonight our military capability and advantage will be safe in mitt romney and paul ryan's hands. are you saying they're not safe in president obama's hands? i'm concerned about a couple things. first that we not allow seek quest traigs of the budget to damage our military strength. i'm concerned about missile defense. that was the reverence to technology advantage. i don't know there won't be a move to try to compromise missle defense. i can't say that i know what will happen in the future with our military power under the current president. i do think i know what will happen with mitt romney. >> greta: you say concern. is that a nice word like maybe it may be a little bit or look, you no know we've got a serious problem and better do something about it. >> we better be certain whoever is president

it's no secret i'm a sports fan. i get asked if i've ever played basketball with president obama. the answer is no. i'm still waiting for that invitation. the next question is, do you think you can take him one on one? i said i don't know. i've never seen him play. but i can tell you this. president obama would be easy to defend because you know he is always going to go to his left. >> now, that was john thune

speaking tonight. and the theme, we can change it. nice to see you. that brought down the house. they like that had. >> got to try to lighten it up a little bit. >> greta: did you enjoy speaking? >> sure it's a great setting and you can be a little intimidated by your surroundings. there is a big audience. many of us are not used to that or using a teleprompter but tried to get through it without hopefully messing up too much. >> greta: it's fascinating how about four, five words defined the theme of the convention. provided by president obama but you didn't build it. and if it were a drinking game how many times it was said, everybody would be on the floor. >> i know people that are familiar with that and heard that story. a lot. and probably get tired of it. and probably get annoyed of the repetition but a lot of people is part of the narrative of the convention.

and i think it presents the contrast we're drawing in his campaign. his record. and his vision for the future because this really is in many respects hostile to small businesses and to the people who create jobs in this country. i think that statement was representative of just a view he has that is very different from the one governor romney has. >> greta: what do you think of the nominee for vice president? >> i thought it was great and well delivered. paul is very sincere and i think that come as cross. i think in terms of content, he doesn't runway from anything. he confronted issues, talked about leadership they're going provide and entitlement reform, taxes and regulations. all things i think are important when it comes to growing the economy and creating jobs and i think that is the number one issue. i think he was going at the heart of what i think this campaign is going to be about. that is the economy, jobs who has a better vision and idea

and a better plan and secondly, how do we deal with these pro tracted problems we have? entitlement reforms, getting spending under control. and i thought paul did a great job. >> there is so much discussion about the presidential race. if you look at it, if your candidate wins, if you don't, if your party doesn't take the senate and keep the house you still, you know there is still difficult for to you achieve your agenda. >> it is. that is why we're hoping for a big performance at the top of the ticket. many senate races are going to be impact bid what happens at the top of the ticket. if the governor does well in a lot of these states where there are big senate races we think that is going help our candidates get over the top. it's going to be critical to govern the country. if he wins presidency but democrats still control the senate they're going to be in a position to block everything he tries to do. if we want to change the direction of the country and give someone else a try having seen what three and a half

years now of obama policies have done, i think it's important to give the president hopefully president romney a team he can work within the senate. >> greta: why do you think some people are undecided. if there is a stark difference between the two ask lines drawn in the sand why do you think there is still six to 10% who aren't sure? >> partly because a lot of those people probably voted for president obama. and you have to convince them that that was bt a a good decision. so i think that not only is a question of -- he's i think you'll see in the campaign, i think they're going to talk about he's a good person, and a good family, awful those things well intentioned but he has tried and failed in the policies haven't worked and i think that there is a question of presenting an alternative people say do you know what? we're okay with voting him out, because we've got someone better with we think has a better idea. i think part

line but starting out in the beginning there are a lot of choices. what is it about governor romney for you? he has a clear vision of what he wants owe do the america. i think he wants to reduce the size of government. which is what paul ryan talked about tonight. and that is what they have to do. what president obama wants to do is increase the debt and make our economy more feeble than it s what this country needs is a reduction in the size of government the way five or six republican governors have done. including new york with great results. >> greta: if reduce the military you're reducing the sisz of the government. senator mccain says we have to sort of bolster the military. >> i work for a president who reduced the size of the government. his name was ronald reagan. and he had the courage to set priorities. priorities were america is going to be strong.

america going to give a great image of strength to the world. he backed down to soviet union as a result of that. if we did that, we can back down iran. instead we have an american president writing letters trying to negotiate with him while iran is becoming a nuclear power, a president has to security head of the security council, secretary general to not go to iran. secretary general says that is nice, i'm going anyway. no respect for the american president. this president is not respected in the world. that is the point john mccain was making and the point governor christie is making and i think that is one of the reasons why our national security is jeopardized. iran does not fear barack obama. >> greta: that is interesting secretary of state couldn't leeza rice spoke to you tonight. she's been above politics and i was surprised and that means something to her. >> i believe she's here for the same reason she does,

we're concerned for our country. people can agree or disagree but that is where we're coming from. i'm concerned four more years with barack obama will mean a weakened economy with damage done to it and a seriously weakened america. i think with mitt romney and paul ryan america will become a private economy rather than a government economy. >> greta: what about representative paul ryan tonight? >> fabulous, home run. i can't thing of a single thing that could have been better in that speech. he took on medicare, turned it around completely. he and mitt romney want to save medicare under president obama, it's not going to be available to anyone under age 50 years old. he's going to ruin it. he's raided it. he's going ruin it. i think he demonstrated wisdom of governor romney's choices in the speech he gave tonight. it was very mature about as clear a vision of what has to be done as you can get. and it was a devastating

critique of the obama administration. >> greta: to better sell, i think that i'm going to give you something then i'm going make you cut back. mitt how do republicans make that sell come the next couple weeks leading into november? it's someone says i'm going to help you out with your skbrob gave you more unemployment that, is sounding better someone says very to cut back stuff. >> unless you're saying to the person who believe in the work ethic and dependency is not a good thing and believe it only leads to further dependency and remember with welfare spiral. american people are a stj, reliant people who want to be given a hand but a hand up, not a hand that holds them down which is what president obama has done. i thought paul ryan made that case very power fully. >> greta: it's toasty out here it s you can go inside and do this.

promise must be kept for the next generation. and it's success. >> greta: new mexico governor martinez joins us, nice to see you. before we start we went over the fact in 2008, the democratic candidate for president won by 15 points and your state is 3-1, democrats republican autos republicans outnumbed 3-1. >> they elected you, a republican governor. why? >> well i was district attorney first of all four terms. and in a county where republicans are outnumbed 3-1 but because we talked about what we're going do and delivered on promises especially being tough on crime. it was a border city and we had to be tough on crime. i have been a prosecutor before for governor, and i went to places where state candidate never had gone

before where they just would mark it off as democrats were going to control and not going to be willing to crossover. i went there and spoke with them. i told them what i would do if elected governor i'm now delivering on promises. >> greta: you have to admit it's unusual. those odds were against you in terms of demographics. one is that you talked about it tonight said at one point, you went out to lunch and when you drove to the lunch you're a democrat. and you had lunch and when you left you said something like, i'll be damned, we're rinz. -- republicans. what happened at that lunch? >> we sat down. two mayors from the republican party. i knew something was up. and they just hadn't called me out of the blue for nothing. we talked about issues. we which what we stopped doing. trying to get twordz define you. are you a conservative? what does that mean.

tell me the issue. that is what they were doing with me, having an honest conversation so i would think about why i'm registered as a democrat which no one had done before. i was raised conservative. now i realize that. my family is hard working, proud people. and they built their own business them wanted less government involved in their lives. and so it was wonderful to be able to realize who i truly was and that i was a republican. and i was going to run for office for the first time and i changed parties knowing that could have been the beginning of the end. >> greta: last night's senate candidate for texas cruz was here. he said hispanics are conservatives. and historically the vote has gone democratic. how is governor mitt romney going to get the hispanic vote? in this election? because that is, those are both unusual. >> what has to happen with especially president obama

many promises to the hispanic population. to most americans of course. getting, taking over immigration reform and taking charge of that and first year. he failed to do that. that he was going to cut the deficit in half first term. and it went up $5 trillion. you have to have honest conversations and go to places where republicans have never been before. so you can have that conversation with him them and come with solutions and have to get an elected. you have to -- can't just visit when it's election time then go away. you have to include them part of the process z part of the solution. they're going need to be taken in america. >> greta: very to put up a picture. you talked about when you're 18 and a security guard. i've got to put up a picture. totally random. and lots of viewers wanted to see you when you're a young girl, a young governor martinez sup there. governor, thank you very much. i hope you come back again.

>> thank you so much, greta. >> vice presidential nominee, paul ryan. >> college graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms staring up at fading obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. barack obama is the first president to create more excuses than jobs. and in his view, it's george's fault. it's the bank's fault. it's europe's fault. it's the weather's fault. it's congress's fault. mr. president, if you want to find fault i suggest you look in the mirror. >> it's is said that this election will turn on domestic and economic issues. but like mitt romney knows and what we know is that this is a success at home, also depends on our leadership in the

world. >> the essence of america what unites us is not nationality or ethnicity or religion. it is an idea. and what an idea it is. that you can come from humble circumstances and you can do great things. that it does not matter where you came from. it matters where you are going. >> greta: how did congressman ryan do tonight? brit human joins us. how did he go do? >> i thought he did fine. i thought he had a difficult task. convention lost its first day. the day when the obama record was laid bare and attacked. he took care of that tonight. and he did it in a way that i thought was specific and point by point. it was tough. it wasn't mean. i don't think he came across as a mean guy. and so i think it was very effective and there was humor

in and a wonderful moment. and when he was said his mother was a role model and showed a picture of a mother and granddaughter that is wuchbt things people looked at that home, that is dynamite it s he seemed earnest in delivery. >> he doesn't seem like a guy out with a main chance. this tells you he spent a fair amount of time on medicare. there is speculation he was not going to do that tonight and they fired their shot across the obama bow on medicare. they're going to stay with this issue and they're going to campaign on it. they're going to run on it. he said they're going to win and he said we're going to win this debate. i was uncertain how long they'd stay with it. they're staying with it and it's been a dangerous subject for republicans for a long time.

>> greta: carl rove tells me that the vice president no one votes for the vice president. that you know that is not relevant for the ticket. >> i think that is true. that is basically true. it's hard to cite a vice presidential candidate who singlehandedly made a difference not since 1960 when lyndon johnson probably made a big difference in delivering texas for john f kennedy. that doesn't mean along the way there aren't things the vice presidential candidate does if it's a well received election it enhances the election of the nominee. the vice president helped put the case which is certainly what paul ryan is about tonight, against the incumbent, which was what paul ryan up to as well. he can help. ease, the vice presidential selections are rarely decisive. >> greta: each side has got its base. the other side that they're both trying to get. it seems to me undecided means ones that aren't particularly

interested to dig in and make a decision. would they are watching tonight or next week? >> one of the thing that's can work this election year and i haven't seen much of this is that i think a lot of people are at a stage where they voted to make a big change four years ago when they're not satisfied with how things were. not satisfied with how things are now. i think people wonder can anyone fix this? one of the things they have to overcome that people think nobody can make a difference. i think a lot of people who are at that stage are and have been indifferent to the whole election so far. that is when i think it counts in part for the undecides we have left. >> and certainly wasn't a big night tonight. >> and thank you, now to isaac. that is mean isaac, winds and rain hammering the gulf coast. raging flood waters leaving people trapped with no way

out. all of that exactly seven years after hurricane katrina devastated the region well. have live coverage in new orleans and in baton rouge, louisiana. we begin with casey. >> actually we'll go back to casey. we'll go to anna in baton rouge interest there. can you tell me what conditions are like there? >> tropical storm isaac has been down graded from a hurricane. it's a slow-moving soaker. it's been wreaking havoc around the region but we're still waiting for it to move northwest and hit in the baton rouge area we're under a curfew that began at 6:00 p.m. and will end at 6:00 a.m. it seems people are heeding warnings and businesses are closed off and people are off the streets. and we're seeing flash flooding in and around the area. we've been getting rain all day. and which is sat rating the

ground that. is with trop cal force winds and busts up to 50 miles per hour. here in baton rouge. trees and power line goesing down. utility officials saying about 674,000 homes and businesses are with out power across the state of louisiana. and this area has learned the hard way about how difficult it can to get assistance. governor bobby jindel has been urging the federal government for more help. president barack obama sign aid disaster declaration for the state of louisiana providing financial assistance to state and local governments affected by isaac. and 4100 shelters are serving residents across the state and all flights out of new orleans airports are cancelled. back to you. >> greta: thank you. now we're going to try to get back to casey in new orleans. as soon as we get his shot
