the supreme court upheld obama care. the first words out of my mouth were i still think it's unconstitutional. the left wing blogs were merc mercilyless. my wife said can't you please just count to 10 before you speak? so i've had time to count to 10. do you know what? i still think it's unconstitutional. >> on the record is in tampa at republican national convention. members of the tea party are here so what did they think of the g.o.p. message so far? let's ask michelle bachmann who started the tea party caucus in the house of representatives. what do you think? >> fantastic because remember tea party stands for we're taxed enough already. government shouldn't spend more than it takes in and follow the constitution. that is what you heard all night.
1:17 am
last night, every speech. it's in our party platform. we couldn't be happier. >> was congressman ryan in the tea party caucus some. >> you know that is a good question we'll have to check if he is. if anyone is following those values it's paul ryan. membership doesn't necessarily mean if you abide by principles. clearly, he does. >> greta: condoleezza rice spoke tonight. what do you think? >> she was fantastic. the thing about condy is that she has credibility behind her words. she has conviction, heart and purpose. she was very smart and gave the message it that needed to be heard. that is mitt romney will lead from the front not like barack obama said, america he's leading from behind. and he said she said that america's voice has been muted on the world stage leading to a dangerous less safe america.
1:18 am
she's right. >> greta: soos obama care was passed i think you were one of the first to object to it. do you have any sort of reservation with governor owe romney in light of the massachusetts health care system she developed there? >> i was very concern bitd when ways a presidential candidate running as a nominee. during the course of the race that the contribution i made to the presidential race. i made the repeal of obama care front and center, mitt romney accept that had position of the full scale repail of obama care and greta he's looked me in my iz, on more than one occasion and assured me michelle, i will repeal obama care. i believe him. he said he will do it on day one. if we can have a republican house and senate, we get sworn in first, we can pass the repeal bill when he goes in to take an oath of office he can turn around, come back into
1:19 am
the capitol and on that day, he can sign repeal and release all of the hostages in a way that like reagan did, on the day. >> and the stance of the senate going republican have been somewhat dim. >> i think they're very good. >> we don't think. >> because take a look. at some of the races that we didn't think were possible. >> legality me ask you about missouri. about akin and missouri. that is then congressman akin made the remark about legitimate rape. now he's down a legitimate number of points. >> realize senator mckasskill's record hasn't changed one bill after another, she has problem was her tax records and all that. and i think that the people of missouri are starting through this race and will make a decision.
1:20 am
and they'll decide. i like to have a couple spares. i think we're going to do better than what people think. we have to win the senate. again, we lost the legal challenges the supreme court. that is doneful we can't deal with obama care through the courts. there is only one avenue. it's a good one but we have to hold on to the house but have to win the senate in order to do that, then of course take the white house as well. then we'll realize my dream and dream of millions of americans repeal of the president's health care plan to deal with them, greta, you know is bring down cost of health care. because this is only jacked it up. >> greta: nice to see you, thank you very much. >> and we need to reform our outdated tax code. we need to fix our burdenensome regulatory system and need a policy that encourages development of our resources right here in the ground in america.
1:21 am
america has a choice between mitt romney who seek seeks to grow the economy and barack obama who seeks to redistribute it. which one do you think will liberate america's entrepreneur yil spirit? >> greta: that was rob portman speaking tonight in tampa. now, he goes on the record. nice to see you. >> good to be with you again. >> greta: did you have fun speaking tonight? >> it was fun, yeah. >> greta: why some. >> because we're talking about the future and to take this country in the right direction z so i did talk about tax reform and energy policy. and also talked about trade. we can expand exports and grow more jobs here. i think our best days can be ahead of us. we need new policies and it's
1:22 am
fun to talk about that. >> greta: if you get your president romney, and you don't win the united states senate, do you still get that which is a romney agenda? >> makes it harder. some things you need 60 votes. and i think we could get to 51 and we can get there. and if we can, we can do amazing things including passioning a budget which we haven't done for three years in the united states senate. >> how does that happen? >> greta: how can you not pass a budget? i know it's not your party but, i don't mean to argue for him. how does he justify not putting something on the table? >> i think budgets are hard things to vote for they include a lot of things that are difficult. paul ryan's budget did come to
1:23 am
the house floor and did pass. republican dz what they're supposed to do. congress has the power of the purse ability to put forth a blueprint for the future. in the senate, nothing. you know is in the senate majority leaders decided not to move forward witness probably to protect members. the president does have to submit a budget by law and he d unfortunately, it was such a bad budget no one would go for it. he didn't get' single republican or a single democrat, neither house or senate to support his budget. partly because it added another $11 trillion to national debt over 10 year period of the budget. so that is the lack of leadership we have now. exciting opportunity is electing mitt romney and paul ryan trying to get to 51. or 50 with vice president providing a tie vote. and beginning to shape this country by getting a a budget in place and you can do other things to help with regard to tax reform and saving our entitlement programs and
1:24 am
making sure the economy gets back on track. >> greta: it's a virtual tie can president obama and governor rom nee. i zront a sense of how many undecided in ohio. i assume that you get your work to make sure they're in place. >> i'm following it closely. >> greta: a lot of pressure on you. >> i'm going door to door. i've gone through 11 call centers and made calls. it's interesting what's happening. there is more energy on our side this year. and we've been pummeled by ads. there is a carpet bombing of mitt romney in ohio by barack obama's campaign. it's been almost all negative. it's been a boreage of negative ads, many are misleading and some are inaccurate. >> greta: you've been quoted as saying being cool does not fix the economy. are you saying the president
1:25 am
is cool? >> in 2008 people said this is the guy when has got right idea he talked about the fact that this wasn't a red or blue country. sort of seemed like he was a guy going to work together to get things done that. hasn't happened. he's not shown leadership through his budget or what he did on health care what. did he with financial services and the stimulus package. jammed it through on a partisan basis. we're seeing results of it. the president promised to fix the economy it and hasn't worked. mitt romney has got experience and record. he worked with democrats to get things done z balance the budget, cut taxes and bring back jobs. that is whalt american people are looking for. i think those undecided voters in ohio, are looking for hope. they're looking for someone who they will show there is a better way. >> senator thank you very much. >> great to be with you.
1:26 am
>> thank you. >> and up next, florida attorney general pam bondy. also house haj ti leader eric cantor is here, he's close to vice presidential nominee paul ryan. coming up.
1:27 am
1:28 am
sit time to repeal obama
1:29 am
care. it is time to stop those who ignore the constitution when it's expedient. it is time to remember that our rights are not a gift from government. but from god. and that by his grace, we will defend them. it is time for mitt romney and paul ryan. >> greta: florida attorney general pam bondi speaking about the issues she has been fighting obama care. i want to ask you quickly about last night, mrs. romney spoke. and you're here, you know mrs. romney. tell me what you thought about the speech. >> i thought it was unbelievable and i also saw her this morning she was submitting a video saying i'm worried about one thing, they're going to come in and nominate ann romney instead of me. he was very cute about that and that is true. she has an incredible speaker
1:30 am
and a dynamic woman. a great mother. and she's brilliant. and frankly i've been disappointed by comments i've heard about her from fox's own juan williams. but that is ridiculous calling her a corporate wife. she's mer than that. i sat with the governor's wives, first ladies of pennsylvania and idaho and they were talking about this morning how disaptsed they were in that. >> greta: and governor rick scott is not here. >> he's not. he's, you know i've talked with the governor three four times per day. he is so disappointed he's not here but he has to look out for 19 million floridian autos suffering from the storm that came through. yes. >> it did. he said palm beach is underwater. he when i talked to him earlier he was in palm beach and headed to the keys and then, possessa coala. we've got severe flooding in our state. he's so disappointed but he's
1:31 am
doing his job as governor. >> greta: i noticed you hit a nerve with the crowd tonight with what the signature program you've been fighting which is obama care from the podium what was it like? i was outside watching. i wasn't in there. >> it was something i've never spoken to that amount of people before but it was exciting and i just spoke with general sam owens from georgia we spoke about something we believe in in our hearts. so easy to talk about something you believe in. and you know is right. we whole heartedly believe in mitt romney and paul ryan. >> greta: was your father able to watch? >> he wasn't. my dad... hasn't felt well. he had to stay home. my mom was here, my sister, greg was here, my future stip son. the whole family is here. >> greta: it's exciting and so
1:32 am
much families, people want their families. pam nice to see you. i should call you general. >> we've known each other too long. >> greta: too long. >> now, efy rain pounding new orleans. and we just got him back. casey joins us live from new orleans. casey? >> this feels like deja vu. would you believe the the worst is not even right here in new orleans proper. it's all around us. take a look at some video. just about 11 miles southeast of where i am. an area very hard hit levy breech on the' eastern side of the mississippi river. an earthen, community built levy. this is a sending people up to
1:33 am
their at that timic -- attics. and in afternoon, focus in the same part of the parish but on the western side of the mississippi. 3,000 people had to be evacuated including 120 nursing home residents hooked up to oxygen tanks and sitting waiting to be taken by national guard troops to a nearby naval base. it's down in the area and now, in the opposite direction southwest in the community of lafitte tonight we're hearing about he vac waigs in jefferson pairnish. some of the rescue boats unable to get into the area because conditions are not good. isaac moving very slowly. it's dumping a lot of rain and kicking up a lot of wind. and we're seeing this playing
1:34 am
out around the region. >> greta: casey, thank you. we look at this and see those pictures and it's horrifying and a vision of what we saw seven years ago. >> yes. >> greta: casey, thank you. coming up governor romney's wife made a big splash but how does she, and her family think her speech went? here with a look at that interview next. on the record coming to you from tampa this week continuing our coverage of the republican national convention. ley earhardt, back to
1:35 am
1:36 am
1:37 am
greta. >> it's moms that had to work a little harder to make everything right. the moms really hold this country together. we're the mothers. we're the wives. we're the grandmothers we're the big sisters. we're the little sisters and
1:38 am
we are the daughters. you know it's true. don't you? i love you, women! >> last night governor mitt romney's wife delivering a personal, passionate speech about her husband today, shannon got the first interview since the night in the spotlight. and asked about her family's reaction to her speech. >> we went home, a lot of my grandchildren were there. not real little ones but most of the grandchildren were at the speech. i was in the hotel room. the door opened and about 15 of the little kids stormed into the door. threw me on the ground jumping all offer me, hugging me, laughing. they just, i mean, they were so cute. >> and well, she, the family
1:39 am
loved fed it. >> she said they were emotional saying one was sobbing, her daughters in law but all very meegsal because she's for a year and a half felt like the job is to get out there and tell the world who mitt romney is. >> it's tough on political families people forget that it's almost easier to be the one insulted but the same thing as their husbands get insulted and sometimes unfairly. did she talk about that? >> i asked her about this priority usa ad from a third party that drew an implication between her husband's work and that man telling a story of losing his wife to cancer. and if said you know it was rated false by a fum of outside organizations smchl democrats stepped up and called it outrageous. how do you feel to see your husband attacked that way? she said we're talking about a woman losing her life. and suggesting my husband had anything to do with that, she
1:40 am
said, it was painful and i don't expect it's going to get better. >> greta: she seemed confident on this and very relaxed. a lot of people interview them they're not comfortable. you feel bad because they're nervous, she seems she's very comfortable in her own skin. >> you got the interview we've all wanted. thank you. >> you got it. >> greta: great interview. house majority leader eric cantor watches as paul ryan officially became the vice presidential nominee. we spoke with leader cantor tonight. >> nice to see you. >> good to be with you. >> is it traechl fun to have a close friend as vice presidential nominee? >> it's just cool. it is something else. really i couldn't be happier for paul. and the whole family. it's a very exciting time for us in the house, too to see one of our colleagues actually
1:41 am
on the national stage like this, trying to affect some of the policy changes we've been working on. >> he's not new to this business about policy launch. >> paul, you know i first met him he served on tax writing committee together. ever since then, i've known he's very interested in aing things budget, the economy. and really how to make government sort of right side so we can hold true to principles of economic freedom. >> greta: washington gets a little nasty. did you know that? sheer what congressman van holland told me. i understand people goring to have differences of opinions he described congressman paul ryan i calculated kinical efforts to confuse seniors and hide from seniors how bad the romney-ryan plan would be. >> that is so washington.
1:42 am
and i'm listening to that just trying to remove nasty adjectives and stick to the facts here. the facts are that paul put forward a budget that actually proposes a solution to the real problems we're facing in the deficit. when we know that the federal government made promises now that it can't afford to keep. so we're trying to save the safety net for those who truly need it and gitd get about the business of regenerating activity in the private secretary qor. we believe men and women build those businesses and can be successful without necessarily the big hand of government deeming itself. >> i suppose you realize sort of the advantage of offering a lot more. if it maik maybe unrealistic and telling everybody to tighten the belt. one is a ease easier message to sex how do you sell your
1:43 am
republican message that people have to tighten the belt? >> i think it's like when chris christie conveyed last night to n.his address. i don't think we should underestimate the american people. they're smart. there is a reason why our country has been a leading country for some years and the world's only super power, economically and militarily. the reason is that american people get it. and that you can't have something for nothing. we do need tf a safety net there for people when need it. and you know we also want to provide the avenue for those who want to earn their success. foremost of the american people dying to get out there and start building businesses and growing men. >> this is extraordinary. and i guess the real group everyone is trying to reach
1:44 am
are undecided. how do you get your message to undecided?. >> i'm from virginia. we're one of the critical states like this one. in election. and they will come down to the election in very few states and it will be the 5% or 6% of the undecided going to make or break this election for mitt romney and paul ryan. how by goat them is i think talk to them and make a case in terms of how to make life work for the suburban mom in virginia. they're struggling now wondering how to get through the month and pay bills, it's our solution to planl for their kids college education and paying for parents health care costs. >> coming up, what you've been paying for our famous panel. we're talking about tonight? you guessed it. vice presidential nominee pail ryan. and the party is still going
1:45 am
strong here in tampa. griff jenkins takes you to another big event
1:46 am
1:47 am
1:48 am
congressman paul ryan now officially the vice presidential g.o.p. nominee. he's made his mark as the budget guru. you've seen him go on the record many times. >> we need leaders willing to put up ideas. and we pass our plan showing the senate and budget here is how we want to fix the problem. let's see your ideas. and they have decided not to put their ideas on the table so you can get to the table. >> america does not deserve a debt crisis. in 2008 we had that economic
1:49 am
crisis that, caught us by surprise, if if they knew about a bad time, knew when it was coming and how to stop it but didn't do so. what would you think that have person? >> last year, last time with obama john mcyain stopped campaigning here so obama kind of ran up the score. >> there is a last election we took two house seats we feel like we have a good chance as republicans and i think mitt romney is in the best position to win states like ours. and this is what it doesn't do, it doesn't fix our problem. he doesn't pretend to fix our fiscal problems so i would call it america drawing a debt.
1:50 am
>> greta: joining us now our political panel, byron york and rick klein, rick, first you tonight. >> energy. enthusiasm. excitement. it was a good story told there. he tied obama, romney campaign message in with his own personal story. and i think also a very effective description of why mitt romney is the right person to do it. he talked more about mitt romney than just about everyone else. >> i was not a big fan of chris christie tonight. i think tonight was a big success for paul ryan. last night was not a good night for chris christie. he did have to liver a -- deliver a indictment against the obama administration. and he had good barbs at the president for talking too much. and introduced himself a little bit. did that, had some people
1:51 am
tearing up talking about his mother and he had to talk and he had to convince people that he and mitt romney were going to spend all of their time working on jobs, economy and debt. he was well focused on that. >> two images i thought were effective in describing his appeal. ac-dc to zepplin idea, then, fading picture of obama on the walls of the kids coming home from college without a job. it just is an easily understandable image that i think if you can make that appeal that is how you do it. >> one of the speech writers for the speech was a guy who wrote sarah kbrainl's speech at the republican convention in 2008, a beautiful speech. this was the same way. i think the image of the bedroom was huge and people goring to remember that. the other interesting, ac-dc to zepplin thing was fascinating showing he had
1:52 am
younger musical taste than mitt romney. led zepplin was 40 years ago. he said the real point is s.to get to white middle aged, disaffected voters who may have voted for barack obama last time around z make that connection with them this time around. >> what about governor romney tomorrow night? >> i mean he's, as i said, he's made big speeches before. none as big as this. everything else going to pale in comparison he's going to need to -- the way they've structured this convention we're going hear more about him. he's never been comfortable talking about himself. >> greta: his wife said that other night. >> that is right but that is how it works. i asked rick santorum about this. he said be vulnerable. show a human side and show people not everything is
1:53 am
perfect. if he can demonstrate that and show a limb bit of humanity tomorrow might, i think we'll be surprised at people tuning in. >> greta: do you think the president's team regrets the president said you can't build this? >> you know, i'm sure that it just drives them crazy. in times i've wondered maybe republicans are pushing this too hard like maybe pushing joe the plumber hard. and this does resonate with republican voters and independents because it's suggesting what people suspect about barack obama. is that he really does devalue that kind of individual initiative republicans celebrate. so they've said it a lot. and you're going to keep hearing it too, on the campaign. >> big week next week. and you'll be with us next week, too. gentlemen, thank you both. >> thank you. >> coming up, republican national convention is
1:54 am
rocking. literally. a big late night event pairngtsly dancing.
