five minute speech. they split the screen with his mother, betty. at one point when the congressman talked about his mother and after his father died how she went back to school and started a small business, the congressman teared up a bit. there you can see it there. wiped away a tear and took a sip and kept on going. >> gretchen: that was an amazing moment. and it is great to see the kids come out on stage and look at the family more. it is humanizing aspect and most people can relate to having a spouse, partner or kids or moms or dads. >> brian: that's what president obama did with his young family. and now you can see it have young vice-president nominee. half of the registered voters didn't know who paul ryan was. it is down to 17 percent and

important in his political career, especially when you consider that some folks are just starting to tune into the campaign now. this could be a first impression that he could make with those folks. back to you. >> steve: all right. thank you very much. in the "wall street journal" this morning, i saw a site regarding paul ryan's speech, they say ryan hit a 450-foot shot into the upper deck gives mitt romney the lead and now mitt romney has to hold it. >> gretchen: it's interesting because some of the pundits say the most important thing for mitt romney tonight is just not to make any mistakes because mistakes are memorable. that's an interesting perspective. some believe that he really has to humanize himself. some others say oh, enough with that. let him just be who he is. >> brian: yeah. he's got 40 minutes and twice as long as the average speech. he does have some history of doing good in big spots. remember in michigan how good he did. i thought this is the one thing i would add. normally they say if you're senator john mccain or al gore, go out and give a good speech.

joe what, does mitt romney need to say in his big speech? >> this is his chance to define himself, to project who he is and what he's about in a positive way. i really think if he spends any time working over obama, it's mistake for him. plenty other people, ryan and others did an effective job. he needs to really project what he wants to do and fill in some of the blanks for people because he hasn't been able to do that. not through a lot of his own fault. >> steve: if he was going to work over obama, wouldn't we have seen governor chris christie do that a couple of nights ago? >> chris christie did work him over a little bit. the question is, do you do it like paul ryan did it last night with the sort of sharp, precise pointed, polite but none the less pointed comments? i suspect we'll see some of that tonight in a way of contrasting. it will be more rather than a direct assault, it will be this is what they've done. this is what i'll do. i think joe is right. we need to see more of the man, what's he about?

what makes him tick? what are the values in his heart? we need to see more about what it is he wants to do. we've gotten to the point in the campaign where it's more important, increasingly more important about what they say about themselves and what they say about their opponent. not to say we stop saying something about the other guy, but it's important for them to say what it is they will do. >> steve: joe, i thought it was effective when paul ryan was talking about his mother and here on fox we split the screen where we saw him talking about his mother examine after his father died, she went back to school, learned a new business, started a new business and at one point, he paused and wiped away a little tear. that was a real connection for a lot of people to paul ryan of >> i think most america would find that hard to see. they can't picture romney having that same human response that ryan had. that's not a hit on him, but i'm saying if he could and it was

i know you believe that the republicans have to give at least -- get at least 50% of the hispanic vote to win this election. you've been quoted in recent days as saying that the gap with hispanic voters, republicans need to stop acting stupid. what do you mean? >> well, the hispanic voters, a lot of them, share our values. they believe in strong families. they believe in national security issues. they believe in education for their children. they want a chance economically. it's a powerful combination there that we can offer an alternative to the democratic party. but the tone of our message is not a welcoming one. my issue is not this election. i think mitt romney is going to be the next president. my issue is for the conservative governance, the conservative philosophy to govern over the long haul, we have to recognize our country is changing demographickiccally and we need to change our tone, not necessarily our message. if we do that, we'll be the governing philosophy of this

country will be center right as far as the eye can see. that's a worthy objective, i think. >> steve: right. the "wall street journal" did a poll within the last ten days, governor, and they talked to latino voters. who do you like? 63% currently supporting the current president about a little less than 30% supporting governor mitt romney. what can mitt romney say tonight to americans and latinos in particular to wind up getting their vote? >> i think he can say help is on the way; that we tried it one way. it hasn't worked. now let's go back to the traditional approach of creating through limited government more opportunity for people and focus on sustained, high growth as a means by which we lift people's spirits because jobs will be available. that means reindustrializing the country. that means an energy policy that is based on our own innovations and resources. that means a total review of all

of these mind boggling rules and compliance costs that make it hard for jobs to be created. that means repealing obamacare and moving to a market-oriented healthcare access insurance plan. it means tax reform. it means entitlement reforms. these are messages that resonate with hispanic voters just as much as they resonate with everybody else. >> brian: governor, i would love to say you told me you were going to mention about your brother's past administrations. what's going to be your additional message that you can give us an idea of what you'll say? >> i'm going to talk about education. my brother was a really focused on that as president. but my -- that's the principle message. i'm going to start off with just a recognition. my brother is a person of courage and integrity and honor and we need people like that in public life. i love him dearly. i'm biased about this. i just feel compelled to do this because almost every day i hear the current incumbent push down

but isaac still causing problems in terms of flooding. i have video to show from placquemine's parish where water is overtopping one of the levees. this is not one of the army corps of engineer levees protecting new orleans. they have been holding up very nicely during this storm system. this is a local levee that just wasn't high enough to hold back the back waters that were flooding. some residents flooding there. they were being rescued. the rain that continues to fall over louisiana, mississippi, and this entire region could cause more problems. what happens is the rain rolls off into small tributaries and streams causing flooding. so on the other side of lake pontchartrain, outside of new orleans, they're calling for more evacuations. communities such as slidell calling for more evacuations along these waterways because there is still a threat of

flooding and they're probably going to be dealing with this problem going into the weekend. so even though isaac is no longer a hurricane and slowly moving through and out of this area, still causing problems throughout the state of louisiana. back to you. >> steve: all right. jonathan on the banks of the mighty mississippi, thank you. >> gretchen: let's catch up with some of the other headlines. he help the u.s. track down osama bin laden. but then found himself behind bars. today an appeals hearing for pakinstani doctor scheduled to resume. he was convicted of having ties to militants. critics say he was targeted by tack standee authorities. republican senator rand paul was among those who say he should be treated like a hero for locating bin laden at his compound and not like a criminal. a florida appeals court grants george zimmerman's request for a new judge. the court ruling that the current judge's remarks put zimmerman in reasonable fear of not getting a fair trial. his attorney wanted the judge removed after he made comments that his client was, quote,

leadership positions. as i said, we have four female republican governors. a very important state. and you see the role that the wives have taken. that speech was a prime time speech that ann romney gave. saw how paul ryan talked about his mother, how she overcame her grief of being widowed. went back to school, started her own business. that's what changed. we have really showcased. women have stepped up and we are in those roles now. >> gretchen: showing almost every kind of a role that a woman can have. there is a lot of them. let's take a look at the poll because it looks like there is still some work to do. maybe there will be a surge after this convention for republicans. but right now among single women, president obama still doing very, very well. 57% of them say they're going to vote for him. only 32% will vote for romney. overall, 50% of women go for

to have any problem with that. >> brian: interesting story came out today. he was offered a job after he lost the nomination to john mccain to join tiger funds, which is a hedge fund, which would have paid a minimum $30 million a year. he turned it down and essentially started lining things up for 2012. tell me about the guy you ran against and why would anyone turn down a $30 million a year job? >> because with governor romney, it's not about the money. it's not about the money. and the reason he turned it down is because his call to serve his country is greater than making another $30 million a year. and that's part of his character that a lot of people don't see because he's an humble man. i saw it on the campaign trail. let me tell you one other bad rap that the governor gets, this likeability stuff. on the campaign trail when i was competing against governor romney, he was one of the most likeable people! >> brian: in the green room? >> in the green room, standing

other side and he looked up at her, ann talked -- and talked about her and then a little emotional. he wiped away a tear. >> gretchen: i think one of the most memorable lines will be nothing about policy at all. it will be about what he has on his ipad because it really showed when he said mitt romney's ipad music is a little bit more for a different generation than his, i think it shows that they might cover a swath of people more so than just an older generation. he says he listens from everything from ac/dc to zeppelin and not necessarily the music that's on the campaign bus with mitt romney. so they appeal to a lot of different people. >> steve: plus he's a young guy, 42. at one point he was talking about how many college kids out of college now are sitting in their parents' basement looking up at that faded obama poster thinking, when is it going to happen for me? given the amount of applause by the delegates, i'd say some delegates have adult children living at their homes right now.

>> no question about it. there are some basic differences that we have with this president about the sort of philosophical direction we need to be taking. it comes down to the statement you can hear the president make about individual small businessmen and women not building their businesses. that's just fundamental to what we believe in america that of course it is the individual and the freedom that this country allows men and women to earn the success. that's what we're premised upon. as you've seen, the president has adhered to a much, much more government focus, washington centered vision of people's future and whether they're going to succeed or not. that's really the difference. paul's put forward a plan that is fundamentally based upon individual choice in terms of how we're going to go and reform these entitlement programs and some the president absolutely doesn't want to hear and won't even discuss. >> gretchen: according to the president, it was all about communication. he said if i just had
