rising gas going up further with this chaos. melissa: and charlie has a story he has been break-in. are the red sox looking for a buyer? who will it be? lori: let's head straight to the floor of the new york stock exchange were knuckled celebes is waiting. reporter: yes, ben bernanke, the chairman yesterday, the dow when the s&p. the dow jones is at its all-time high. i want to take a look at the new york stock exchange.

there was a settlement here. the sec is charging nyse it was improper distribution of market data. they sent it out to certain proprietary clients prior to other customers. the fine is $5 million. an undertaking that they will have to hire consultants to review the data. that is the nyse. it is up 2%. talking about the dow. united health care coming in and this will occur on the trading floor. the new business will have a smaller market. lori: only a couple years on the index, nicole petallides, thank you so much. david blitzer now joins us with his take about united health group. melissa: and oil is topping $100 per barrel. sparkingns.

especially at the cme. reportedly oil prices are unveiled unbearable. it could help push us into a a recession that is really bad news. >> it is bad news. this is waiting speculation that we are going to see an imminent relief from the global strategic petroleum reserve. there has actually been distance shown in the past. it may change and it may mean that we have prices come down pretty dramatically from those earlier highs. we are back to 9873. that is amazing, considering what we are seeing in the middle east.

this story. reporter: some outside economists think so, but these outside economists say that this could lead to more jobs and lower interest rates, especially on mortgages. diane predicts 2014. joseph danny on things that could be a half precent in 2013 which could create an additional 700,000 or so new jobs. >> what they are saying is that they hold this is incredible for next year. despite that and we have a strong recovery and inflation goes down, they are not going to tighten. they are not going to walk us back. they are going to let this party generally roaring next year before they take it away.

reporter: high frequency economics says the fed, i mortgage-backed securities, lowering mortgage rates. more than two tenths of a percentage point yesterday on the news. that should show up in mortgage rates soon. lori: thank you so much, peter. we will keep an eye on that. melissa: are the red sox looking to sell the team? it doesn't mean it's not happening as we well know. charlie gasparino joins us with more. reporter: i think that qe-3 will bail out the boston red socks. she should point that out. i want to address something qe-1 didn't work. qe-2 densmore. we are pushing out a string .

>> that is the situation happening right now on the ground in egypt. we just got word that the million anti-terrorism team is now in the capital of yemen. protesters are trying to storm the u.s. embassy. we are told there are about a eight embassy conflict in which we are seeing these problems. posting security in yemen. yemeni forces trying to push back the crowd the pentagon has already sent some 50 some u.s. marines to libya. the capital city of tripoli, it

was at a consulate in benghazi. violent protests are spreading across the middle east. it seems like every day we hear about a new city and new country and a new embassy that is under siege. each of these countries representing a major national security concern for the united states. sudan gets over $2.5 billion american aid in american aid and that is just over the last four years. tanisha was the birthplace of the arab spring movement. the u.s. is providing it with regular assistance. yemen has received $620 million from america over the last four years. our own reporter, greg, has more in london. reporter: it is supposed to be a

holy day of prayer. we have been watching the feeds coming in from all over the word and it is anything but that. violence wracking capital after capital. particularly in the united states. just to give you a little bit more context, as you noted, tanisha is the birthplace of the arab spring. the government ought to be more moderate. something we could depend on. in fact, we have seen extremist elements that work there. at the u.s. embassy there, as well as the nearby schools. the latest word we are getting from them is that security forces have done their jobs. over in sudan, the one-time home of osama bin laden. extremist elements thereto. a u.s. embassy targeted. protesters scaling the walls. the latest word from sudan is

that the protesters have been expelled. let's go to lebanon now. very special this weekend being visited by the pope. trying to express a feeling of unity between the christian world and the muslim world. two symbols of the united states capitalism targeted more than the lebanese city of tripoli. one attacker was killed, 25 people were injured while police withheld that. in yemen yesterday, we saw the u.s. embassy assaulted by protesters. contacts on the ground in yemen, along with security forces, u.s. marines in place, the protesters propelling forward. all of this triggered by that united states film that was made. megyn: greg talcott coming

directly out of libya. these protests were in part due to that film. president obama will speak on his mideast crisis that we will watch unfold, perhaps within the next hour. we are told it will be up in the next hour. we also have a lineup of experts asked for some in-depth analysis of what we are seeing here. the anti-american violence spreading across the muslim world. the political fallout back here at home. coming up, take a look at our lineup. the former white house chief of staff, general jack keane and michael reagan will join us to talk about his father's experience in the 1980s with libya and other international crises. also, outraged over an elementary school project that

escalation across the muslim world. the head of the cia held a high-level briefing just hours ago. mike rogers is the chairman of that committee. he joins me now. mr. chairman, welcome to the program. what can you tell us about the information he received from the cia this morning? >> well, we have been briefed currently to all of the events that are happening. there is clearly some disagreement. it was a coordinated military style attack. in egypt there was the least information, i would say even as

we stand here today, there are a lot more facts that we are going to have to have two really put this picture together and understand exactly what happened in both places. megyn: what you believe it was a coordinated attack in libya? >> we saw a high degree of command and control of the units that were there. we saw indirect fire that seem to be -- i talked to some folks that were near the event. they believed that it just seemed too organized, to well structured, and there was a series of other factors, many which are classified that would lead me to believe that it was a coordinated attack. some believe that they tend to be well armed in those neighborhoods anyway, i believe it was a spontaneous attack. it just shows that we have a lot more information to put together

to have the full and concrete picture. megyn: is it possible that this is an act of terrorism? can we describe it that way? >> today i described it as an act of terrorism. this was an intended target. the northern part of africa was looking for western-style targets. this very site had an ied attacked some months ago. the fact that there was whereabouts known of the senior u.s. person in the area, all of those factors lead me to conclude that it was an act of terror. it wasn't just having fun at the united states embassy -- it is that argument that doesn't bear fruit when you look at the facts. especially all the facts we have seen. megyn: suggesting this goes beyond outrage of the film? >> oh, absolutely. i believe that was just a convenient way. i will tell you this. and i don't believe that that

attack had anything to do with the film. i think that what you are seeing now is that particular footage. it certainly doesn't have this kind of credibility here. overseas they are using hostilities -- al qaeda and others -- they are clearly using violence on western and u.s. targets. it is highly disruptive. this is starting to fan out across northern africa and the middle east and it is going to take solid u.s. leadership, paying attention to the problem to get this thing back under control. megyn: there was an fbi briefing this morning where the homeland security department warned that the united states could be attacked in the wake of all this dread what can you tell us about that? remapped i think it is far too early to tell. i don't think we have anything concrete. there is going to be violence in the united states, we don't have

megyn: fox news alert. we are awaiting remarks from president obama as we get brand-new video in of angry protesters, setting fire to an american school in the tunisian capital. they also earlier set fire to the u.s. embassy in tunsia. anti-american protests are routing around the globe in at least eight locations. lawmakers are pushing the obama administration to put heavy pressure on these governments and people, who are storming the diplomatic posts. andy card was the former chief of staff under president bush. he was in the white house during the 9/11 attacks and the beginning of the world iraq.

it's great to have you back here today or i would like to get your perspective on what we're seeing today. >> well, this is a terrible time for the folks in the white house. as well as the intelligence communities and the defense department. my heart and prayers are with them as they make tough decisions. the president's primary responsibility is to protect americans and to make sure america's national security interests are upheld. we also have to remember that we need strong leadership. president obama should be providing strong leadership filled with resolve. he should have the patience of diplomacy, it is very important right now. our diplomats have to be practicing tough diplomacy. this is a time when we and we have to count on our allies standing tall with us. as president bush said, you are either with us or against us. that was a very important message to send around the world. we hope that president obama is sending a similar message.

you have to stand with america. we are not at fault. america does not have to apologize for anything. this is an attack on american citizens and american interests and it is up to the world to stand with us as we have to stay to protect our people. megyn: i need to ask you about a soundbite from our secretary of state, hillary clinton, in which she has taken some criticism. some believe that she was being too appeasing, for lack of a better word, of those who are now attacking us. >> let me state very clearly, and i hope it is obvious, that the united states government has absolutely nothing to do with this video. we absolutely reject its content and message. america's commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. megyn: it is a video that has angered many that have seen it,

but it has nothing to do with the u.s. government, it is some private citizen in california that made it, we are told. >> the american government did have nothing to do with this video for the message in the video. however, the american government protects the rights of all americans to exercise their free speech. we have to stand tall for free speech. it is a very difficult thing for the government to manage. what is the definition of responsible speech? i was in the white house and i'd like some of the rhetoric coming from americans about the work that was being done by our president or what was being attacked from outside on the united states. but that does not mean that america abandons free speech. we protect free speech. we also want it to be responsible speech and we do want tolerance and we do want religious tolerance. so i think that secretary clinton's remarks really were not inappropriate. they were appropriate. but please don't fall into the trap of apologizing for

america's values that we respect free speech. megyn: moments ago, the chairman of the house intelligence committee said that he does not leave that the attacks of the ambassador in libya was over the film. he believes it was a coordinated plan to attack. just moments before he made those comments, jay carney, the white house luxman, said this. i want to get your reaction. >> we also need to understand this is a volatile situation. the united states policy -- that is in response to the video. a film that we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting. that in no way justifies any violent reaction to us. but this is not a case of

protests directed at the united states. at-large or at u.s. policy, with response to a video that is offensive. it is offensive to muslims. megyn: your thoughts? >> first of all, i do think there was a coordinated attack. i don't have the benefit of the reports folks at the white house now have. my gut reaction is that this was a coordinated, planned attack on our consulate in benghazi, and it was a terrible, terrible attack. i don't think that it was just protesters attacking, i think the protester provided good cover for a planned attack. i'm offended by what happened. we have a responsibility to lead the world. america is looking for direction and result from the president of the united states and our country. that is important to deliver. at the same time, the president has to find a balance of

diplomacy, and i hope he is working hard to have our diplomats be given the tools that they need to negotiate well and cause people to step back and take a look at their greater responsibilities. but i don't think this is -- i don't think that the attacks that killed the ambassador and other americans was as a result of the protest. i think it became an excuse to use the protest. megyn: here is what i want to ask you. you tell me, as somebody who was white house chief of staff -- the president is in a difficult position because he has this crisis unfolding. he is also running for reelection. when you hear jay carney contradict what the house intelligence chairman said, who has been briefed by the homeland security department, although he says it's not totally clear yet, is that a political statement that jay carney is making to us? when he says this is not about the demonstration were policy.

>> well, you know, i hope that jay carney is not playing politics. that's not the role of the press secretary. that might be the role of a spokesman from the democratic national committee. but it's not a secretaries will to play politics. i don't think we know enough about that attack in benghazi. it looks to me as though it was a coordinated, well-informed and well-planned attack. they took advantage of the protest that was being mounted. i think the protest itself, most people don't know about this video and haven't seen it, and they are being told about things that they really don't know. i think it has been used by our terrorists and enemies to commit acts against the united states. i don't think it's the real reason for the acts. megyn: andy card, always great to get your perspective. thank you for being here. president obama is set to speak on the mideast crisis in less than an hour. you will see that in less than an hour. it's a busy afternoon.

questions today about how he is handling this unfolding crisis. in particular, he is being questioned about some remarks he made earlier this week, to campaign supporters making the comparison that some find inappropriate. watch and see what you think. >> the sacrifices that our troops and our diplomats make are obviously very different from the challenges that we face here domestically. like them, you guys are americans who know that we can do better than we are doing and we are willing to put it on the line. megyn: that is speaking to his campaign volunteers and comparing them to the troops overseas. joining me now is alan colmes. and mike gallagher, author of 50 things liberals love to hate. the president taking criticism on us.

you know, i want to } what we are seeing overseas. it is very serious. it is getting worse by the minute. we are going to keep our eyes on what is happening in cairo and now jerusalem as well, the burning of the embassy in tunisia and an american school there. on it goes. obviously, part of the story in a political year is how a president is handling it. we have obviously heard comments about how mitt romney has reacted as well. >> if this had been a republican president, this would be described by the mainstream media is a major mistake. if you could imagine using the words like them in describing your own campaign staff, not just to the workers in the embassy and those that were murdered, or president obama to make that kind of comparison is just so bizarre and ridiculous and absurd -- listen, again, the media is collectively yawning over this is one more example of

a double standard. i don't think that americans are deaf. i think americans hear it and it is serious. it is very serious to see how president obama has fumbled and fumbled his way through this entire crisis, beginning with our government's initial apology for hurting the muslim religious feelings too daring to compare las vegas campaign workers to the slaughtered embassy officials -- that is unbelievable. the first question that the president ought to be called upon at the white house is why would you say such a thing. that's the first thing that should be asked. >> i didn't see anything in that statement that was questionable. period. there was nothing there. there was nothing there. it was purely an invention on the part of republicans for attacking the president. very unlike what ronald reagan

did in the iranian striped red bulls to their credit, they said that when i pointed attack the president. we stand behind the president 100%. we have a clave and ambitious candidate on the right. he is aggressively attacking the president. these people ought to be ashamed of themselves. they ought to be ashamed of themselves for the acting unsent actions and the way they are acting. stand up together. secondly, there was no apology. this meant that the president is going around apologizing for america or that the embassy was releasing a statement that was in any way shape or form an apology -- it is a blatant lie. megyn: i just want to tell our viewers that we have michael reagan coming out. in november of 1979, reagan did make a statement that he would not comment on the iranian situation. then the ap reported but in each

case, reagan followed his refusal of criticism of carter's iranian policy. >> megyn, this is a serious time. this is a perfect test. the question is, will president obama fill or flunk the test. the question is what a president ronnie apologize. that is exactly what the statement said. >> there was no apology. tell me what the apology is. [talking over each other] megyn: we are talking about the hurting of feelings and that he doubled down on that, and administration officials said that statement was not cleared by washington. so the administration wound up on the same pages governor romney. >> there was no apology. [talking over each other] megyn: let's just get back on track. because the president has been criticized for that statement. he has also been criticized, as we talked about yesterday, four men were dead and he went to vegas and held a campaign event.

and he opened it up by saying that he had a tough day. but then he continued to rally the crowd. you know, we have two navy seals, an information officer and our ambassador who is dead. >> let me get this straight. this should be perhaps a period a time where both stop campaigning. megyn: he's our president bill, don't you understand? >> he is wrongly line, telling things that are not true and also saying that if there was president romney, this wouldn't happen. how dare he make these kind of comments. and brazenly attacked president obama. he should be ashamed. >> we understand your righteous indignation. the best offense is like this.

those words should hot president obama for the next three months for it when he would dare compare campaign workers to slaughtered -- he did. he did. [talking over each other] >> it's not the same. he didn't do that. is that a comparison? megyn: with anti-american violence overseas, jimmy carter is urging president obama to follow his example. he is speaking out and comparing this crisis to the iran hostage crisis. saying that egypt is an ally of the united states, which is not what obama said. and that we know each other well.

>> we thought we would take military action because it would show the macho demeanor that people like in a president. many people still look on that is a symbol that i was weak and weak president and sometimes it takes both sides to bring the peace than it does to go to war. megyn: a former hostage joins us by phone. it's a pleasure to speak with you. what are your thoughts on that comment? we decided to negotiate and eventually every hostage came home free, never to lose innocent lives, sometimes it takes urge to preserve the peace than to go to war. >> thank you for having me. i think that that is the start of the weakness of the west. but the iranian people saw in us. we started giving in there and we gave in and we gave in.

they have gotten bolder and bolder and bolder and stronger and stronger and stronger. i sounded in my jail cell waiting for the bombs to fall from the u.s. but they never did. megyn: president carter points out that everyone got home safely. all of the hostages dead. while he didn't look like a hero, none of the hostages lives were lost. is there something to be said for holding the fire? >> if you want to display the weakness and the demeanor of the president, yes, there was. we did get home all right. i think that everyone there was ready to die if we have to. that is life and that is the way it goes. megyn: president obama has been compared to president carter.

some mean it as a compliment and many don't. he came out with an attack on governor romney that sounded a lot like jimmy carter back when he was president. just take a listen for a minute. >> there is a broader lesson to be learned here. governor romney is have a tendency to sure shoot first and aim later. as president, i have learned that you can't do that. >> this is a world of good guys and bad guys. some politicians shoot first and ask questions later. [applause] megyn: do you see any similarities between the two? >> yes, i do. everything started to change. at the 1980 election. i was in jail, i could not vote. as soon as reagan took over, they respected reagan and his leadership. for eight years, we were

respected throughout the world. we entered crime with a response. megyn: we are certainly glad you got out with the other hostages and we appreciate your time. you are the best. still ahead, growing worries over the muslim brotherhood and the violence that is rocking the middle east. the islamist group sending out tweets. our embassy called them out on it. that is the least of the concerns, but one incident that highlights the problem we are facing. what do they really want? we will discuss it with the fox news military analyst, general jack keane. also about the obama doctrine. where does it stand today? megyn: fox news alert on the latest new video from around the world this hour. pictures here from the protests and anti-american demonstrations in more than one dozen countries, we are told. taking a look at a live picture out of london. a couple of hundred demonstrators showing up outside the u.s. embassy in london. this is video. venting their anger. they burned an israeli flag and an american flag. muslims would eventually conquer america is what they believed. please men with machine guns watched not far from the protests. they said there was no threat. we are going to get back to that in a minute. in the meantime, we would like to bring you the turmoil rocking the middle east is proving no hurdle for pope benedict xvi.

his visit coming despite the chaos that is shaking the region to its foundation. trace gallagher has more. reporter: the pope said he never even considered canceling his trip because of security. but as you might imagine, all the trips that the pope makes, it is very tight security. syria is right next door to lebanon. the violence is pushing in to lebanon. warnings from countries like saudi arabia to not go to lebanon because of the violence. adding to that, the turmoil across the middle east that has led to christians being pushed out of their countries and in many cases, caught in the crossfire and killed among rival muslim groups. the main reason the pope is in lebanon is to address the concerns of regional bishops about the plight of christians. look at these numbers. 4% of the middle east population are christians.

in egypt, 5.3%. in syria, it is 5.2%. lebanon has the largest percentage of christians in the middle east. 40% of the population, and that is the only arab country with a christian head of state. but there is still a great deal of anti-american sentiment in lebanon today. three fast food restaurants, american restaurants, kentucky fried chicken, parties, and arby's, were torched. the pope has said he is all in favor of democracy and freedom, but pushing getting weapons into syria for fighting the government. there is word that the pope may pope may meet with one of the leaders of hezbollah. of course, that is the iranian backed terrorist group. megyn: all right, new information about the anti-american protests. this is the scene from cairo,

megyn: a fox news alert. as we await remarks from president obama. new questions about whether the white house was warned ahead of time before the deadly assault on the u.s. consulate in libya. i'm megyn kelly. the president is expected the make remarks at andrews air force base within moment as the body of ambassador christopher stevens is return towvmentd s. soil. but there is a growing debate on whether the people who killed ambassador stevens were an angry mob upset over a film that

insult the prophet muhammad or whether it was a preplanned attack designed to take place 11 years after the attacks on 9/11. >> reporter: officials say there was no actional intelligence that indicated that there was going to be an attack on the consequence flat benghazi. they said two days ago the attack was carefully coordinated and planned. but it's unclear whether it was triggered about it anti-islam film other anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. but the protests about the film had been going on for hours when men with rocket grenade launchers came and launched the attack. u.s. officials admitted it's hard to get the arab street to

understand the u.s. government had nothing to do with the film. >> it can be difficult to understand in some countries why the united states can't simply eliminate this kind of expression. but as you know it this the absolute core of our being as americans that we allow freedom of expression. >> reporter: carney said that was not an apology for the film and it made the second half of an assertion u.s. officials have been aiming at the arab world, and that is violence is an unacceptable response to the film and leaders have a duty to protect the diplomatic mission. they say the president remains in contact with his national security team even on the campaign trail, though in the crisis, the aftermath of the benghazi death he has been personally briefed several times

a day. at andrews in which the bodies of ambassador stevens and three others killed in the benghazi attack will be returned to this country. the president and secretary of state will be there. family members asked that they not be shown. megyn: we expect to hear from the president. he many scheduled to make remarks. nine cities in which violence is taking place. embassies in many places under siege or under attack. we'll tweet see what the president has to say about it live right here. as we plern more about the chaos that continues to erupt in libya and other parts of the region, new photos of the moment that unfolded during the attack on the u.s. consulate. a man stands next to what appears to be bloodstains in the shape of a human hand found on a column outside of the consulate. those bloodstains apparently

made by an embassy staffer. the rest of the damage steaks for itself. rooms gutted by intense fire now filled with ashes. these are supposed to be safe places for our american diplomats to stay. you can see this place is devoid of any remnant of furniture that comprises the mountains of rubble. the kitchen destroyed by looters in an attack that left four americans dead 11 years after the day of 9/11. turning back to egypt and the protests continuing there for a straight day. egypt's president martha's presi has yet to come out and say anything. he has been supporting the

protesters. our -- what is the muslim brotherhood's end game in this? and what is going on? general jack keane is a retired four star army general. you heard wendall goler repeating what the administration is telling us, which is this is all about protests over this film. do you agree? do you buy that? >> no, i don't. certainly they use it as a catalyst. but you have to understand what's taking place. there has been a political sea damage in the middle east. the arab spring was a manifestation of that. now and i think for years to come different factions will be vying for power. some have been elected to power. in libya a moderate group and in egypt a quasi moderate group and

that may be generous in terms of the muslim brotherhood. but there are factions vying to consolidate their political base. they are using that film as a vehicle of anti-americanism to undermine the current regime which is ruling. the more we talk about the film the more we are helping the demonstrators or those seeking to undermine our allies in the region. megyn: it' clear these people hate america and all we stand for and they made that perfectly clear. what about america do they hate? >> when you see those films as all americans do of people burning our flags and storming the walls of our embassy. what an emotional reaction we all have to that. but we have to drawback from that and recognize they are the radical portion of the islamic movement in those countries. they do not represent the

mainstream of those countries nor the people who know us as americans. we have many friends in the region who know our values and understand our constitution and know clearly what a different country america is among democracies and why preach speech is so important to us. the radicals are willing to kill themselves to kill us because they want to drive us out of the region, a place they intend to dominate some day. megyn: mainstream muslims seem to have respect for america and americans. the problem we have is with these radical islamists who have such disdain for us. you tell me whether president obama's outreach to them at the beginning of his term or since then or any president's outreach to the radical islamists could make any sort of difference with that group? >> it's absolutely impossible. they are a radical ideology. they have a big idea. domination of the region.

killing innocent people to achieve that political end and domination of the world when you get into their writings it's quite sobering to understand how ambitious those goals are. the iranians are a manifestation of it. died and the other groups are existing to achieve those objectives. that policy was misguide and naive to think you could establish some sort of diplomatic relationship with people who have vowed and have been killing us for years to achieve their political goals. >> what are we to do? you are advising president obama on this. what should he be doing? >> he's got to reassess the strategy in the middle east. because what has happened in the middle east, prior to 9/11 our policy was containment of the radical islamic movement. post 9/11 president bush or any president who would have been

serving. what president obama has put in play without stating it is disengagement. he many moving away. as a result of that all of our friends in the region are terrified iranians will trump them. what's the evidence he's moving away. he left iraq. timetable in afghanistan. unwillingness to support the overthrow of the assad regime. even the approach in libya. he pulled back from it and nato found themselves in a stalemate with a third-rate military force for four months. that was outrageous. all our friend in the region see all that and say what is america doing? are they going to stand by us as the iranians reach out more into the region as the radical islamists do? that's what's going on. when you talk to the leaders in the region, they will tell you that america is pulling away, they are disengage and we are not certain we'll be able to count on them in the future. megyn: general jack keane. thank you, sir.

the ground though no word officially of any injuries. it what is 16 months ago president obama was speaking about the arab spring in this exact region. >> in america think of the defiefns those patriots in boston who refused to pay taxes to a king or the dignity of rosa parks as she sat courageously in her seat. south was in tunisia. hundreds of protesters took to the streets. then thousands. in the face of batons and sometimes bullets, they refused to go home. megyn: what we are seeing unfold overseas is raising new questions about whether the approach to the middle east has failed. here is what charles krauthammer had to say about the obama doctrine last night. >> what we are seeing on that screen is the meltdown, the collapse on the obama policy on the muslim world.

the ironies that it began in cairo where he made a speech saying he wanted a new beginning with mutual respect, implying that under other presidents particularly bush there was a lack of mutual respect which was an insult to the united states which had gone to war six times in the last 20 years on behalf of oppressed muslims. kuwait, kosovo, bosnia, iraq, afghanistan and elsewhere. so to imply that we somehow had mistreated the muslims which was the premise of his speech and how the iraq war had inflamed the arab world against us. there was no storming of the u.s. embassy in cairo in those days. megyn: joining me now, a former assistant to the secretary of defense under donald rumsfeld and he served as president of the world bank. thank you for being with usis d. your thoughts on charles

krauthammer's assertion that this what is we are witnessing now, the failure of the obama doctrine in the middle east. >> since we are on this day so soon afterwards let me say i knew chris stevens not well, but he was a fantastic human being and a great ambassador and now the united states is without any ambassador in libya and it's a tragedy for our relations there and those people. i believe that what charles krauthammer said is right about the apologetic posture obama has take weren't muslim and particularly the arab world. i think it was appropriate to welcome the courage of arab freedom fighters against their dictators, including most notably in libya and now in syria. the truth of the matter is as we see in syria he doesn't do much more than when they are standing up and fighting. but the united states has nothing to apologize for.

we have as charles krauthammer said, we have gone to war or risked our people's lives over and over between for people who frequently happen to be muslims. i would have added somalia to that list it's a long list. we should be in an appropriate way taking credit for it. and stop this nonsense about somehow we have to apologize because some obscure people that no one is even sure who they are has posted a video on youtube. megyn: you do not tie anything we are seeing today to what we saw in the arab spring? >> of course it has something to do with it. what i believe we are seeing today is the extremist groups, including al qaeda, that were caught back footed on the arab spring, because these were uprising they had nothing to do with. they were honestly i think the people who were fighting for the

most part were fighting for freedom. but the freedom is unfortunately a freedom for bad actors to try to take over as well. and in libya it's very important to emphasize your viewers may not know because this doesn't get covered. but back in july they had an election. the libyan people voted freely and fairly for the first time in 40 years and the muslim brotherhood came in a distant second. these extremists who seem to be behind the attacks, the so called salafists, did not show. but they have the guns. one of the reasons they have the guns and not people with a more reasonable outlook is because the united states, having rescued benghazi with our air attacks then decided to leave the supply of weapons to other people who don't share our interests or our values. the same thing is happening in syria today. megyn: our viewers may not know that you are one of the people who believed we needed to go to

war in iraq. and that was something of which president obama was very critical and you heard charles krauthammer talking about president obama when he first took office. talking about a new beginning, one where we would see mutual respect been the united states of america and those in the muslim world which seemed to be a veiled reference to the policies unpresident bush. there was a belief that we needed a reset after president bush. we needed what many perceived as angering many in the muslim world as reaching out an open hand to them. your thoughts on that and where it's gone. >> one of the reasons people thought that was because there were so many falsehoods told about president bush including the knowing that he lied about the reasons for the war. we went to war in iraq and afghanistan because of the threats to the united states. and we were helping to liberate millions of muslims suffering under brutal dictatorships.

i think it's unbecoming of the next president of the united states not say that. he can say whatever he likes about how this is misunderstood in the world. but to suggest the people who criticize it are correct and that this was a war on muslims which is unfortunately is widely believed, i think it's place to try to correct that. megyn: how do we get past this? if we have perceived weakness. how do we reestablish america as an entity with which they need to deal and perhaps which they need to fear. >> i think you are right, i think it's more important to be feared than loved. respect might be a better word than fear. but it should be clear that were talking about long processes that will take a long time to work their way out.

this horrible conditions in the arab world have been developing over decades, including, by the way in iraq where you had a terrible dictator ruling for decades and eight takes decades to recover from that experience. but what is essential is people first of all need to understand that the united states continues to be involved. and the message you send when you say we are pivoting to asia, we are finished with iraq. the war is over. the war is not over. the u.s. is out. and we are personning a message in a couple years we'll be out of afghanistan, even if there is a war. it says to people you can't count on the united states. so if you stand up to extremists you are doing it on you're own. there has been way too much boasting about killing usama bin laden. it was great to kill usama bin laden. but in a way you might speculate these attacks which were curiously timed for september 11

are a message from al qaeda that says we are still around. and we'll still be around. the question people ask is will the americans be around. i think obama left a big question mark on that. megyn: thank you very much. we are moment away from andrews air force base and president obama. rushed from this building. the rest of the damage is obvious. look at this room. gutted by the intense fires. filled with ashes where furniture used to be. you can see this apparently was a kitchen. we are told. and now completely destroyed. here, this is the kitchen destroyed by the looters. four americans are killed that day 11 years to the day after september 11. now we take you live to andrews air force base in maryland. we are awaiting the return of the bodies from ambassador chris stevens and three other americans killed in libya this week. you can see president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton both there. they will both speak. they have been meeting with the families. the president has prior to this. we are going to watch for a minute here.

i want to tell you what we are seeing. there are fou four hearses. the bodies will be load into the hearses. secretary of state is expected to speak. then the president will speak. we do not know the expected content of his remarks.

we expect condolences to the families and those who have been lost. but given what we have seen on the unrest unfolding in at least nine cities we have to see whether the president will comment on that as well. stay tuned and we'll listen in. ♪ nearer my god to thee

gave their lives for our country and our values. to the families of our fallen colleagues, i offer our most heartfelt condolences and deepest gratitude. sean smith joined the state department after six years in the air force. he was respected as an expert on technology by colleagues in baghdad, montreal and the hague. he enrolled in correspondence courses at penn state and had high hopes for the future. sean leaves behind a loving wife heather, two young children, samantha and nathan, and scores

of grieving family, friends, and colleagues. and that's just in this world because online, in the virtual world that sean helped create is also being mourned by countless competitors, collaborators and gamers who shared his passion. tyrone woods known to most as rone spent two decade as a navy seal serving multiple tours in iraq and afghanistan. since 2010 he protected american diplomatic personnel in dangerous posts from central america to the middle east. he had the hands of a healer as well as the arms of a warrior.

earning distinct as a registered nurse and certified paramedic. our hearts go out to tyrone's wife dorothy and his three sons, tyrone junior, hunter and kai born just a few months ago, along with his grieving family, friends, and colleagues. glenn doherty who went by bub was also a former seal and experienced paramedic. he, too, died as he lived, serving his country and protecting his colleagues. glenn deployed to some of the most dangerous places on earth including iraq and afghanistan. always putting his life on the line to safeguard other

americans. our thoughts and prayers are with glenn's father bernard, his mother barbara, his brother gregory, his sister kathleen, and their grieving families, friend and colleagues. i was honored to know ambassador chris stevens. i want to thank his parents and siblings who are here today for sharing chris with us and with our country. what a wonderful gift you gave us. over his distinguished career in the foreign service chris won friend to the united states in far-flung places. he made those people's hopes his own. during the revolution in libya he risked his life to help protect the libyan people from a

tyrant. and he gave his life helping them build a better country. people loved to work with chris. and as he rose through the ranks they loved to work for chris. he was known not on for his courage, but for his smile. goofy, but contagious. for his sense of fun and that california cool. in the days since the attack, so many libyans including the ambassador from libya to the united states who is with us today have expressed their sorrow and solidarity. one young woman, her head covered and her eyes haunted with sadness held up a handwritten sign that said, thugs and killers don't represent benghazi nor islam.

the president of the palestinian authority who worked closely with chris when he served in jerusalem sent me a letter remembering his energy and integrity. and deploarg and i quote an act of ugly terror. many others from across the middle east and north africa have offered similar sentiments. this has been a difficult week for the state department and for our country. we have seen the heavy assault on our post in benghazi that took the lives of those brave men. we have seen rage and violence directed as american embassies over an awful internet video that we had nothing to do with. it is hard for the american people to make sense of that because it is senseless.

and it is totally unacceptable. the people of egypt, libya, yemen, and tunisia did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob. reasonable people and responsible leaders in these countries need to do everything they can to restore security and hold accountable those behind these violent acts. and we'll under the president's leadership keep taking steps to protect our personnel around the world. there will be more difficult days ahead, but it is important that we don't lose site of the fundamental fact that america must keep leading the world. we owe it to those four men to

continue the long hard work of diplomacy. i'm normously proud of the -- i'm enormously proud of the men and women of the state department. i'm proud of all those across our government, civilian and military alike, who represent america abroad. they help make the united states the greatest force for peace, progress, and human dignity the world has ever known. iknown. if the last few days teach us anything. let it be this. this work and the men and women who risk their lives to do it, are at the heart of what makes america great and good. so we'll wipe away our tears, stiffen our spines, and face the

future undaunted. and we'll do it together. protecting and helping one another. just like sean, tyrone, glenn, and chris always did. may god bless them, and grant their families peace and solace. and may god continue to bless the united states of america. and now let me have the great honor of introducing someone who came to the state department earlier this week to grieve with us, he well understands and values the work that these men were doing for our country. the president of the united states.

he surely thought of samantha, heather within nathan and he laid down his life in service to us all. today sean is home. chris stevens was everything america could want in an ambassador, the whole country has come to see. how he first went to the region as a young man in the peace corps. how during the revolution he arrived in libya on that cargo ship. how he believed in libya and its people. how they loved him back. there in benghazi, he laid down his life for his friends. libyan and american. and for us all. today chris is home. four americans, four patriots,

they loved this country. and they chose to serve it and served it well. they had a mission. and they believed in it. they knew the danger, and they accepted it. they didn't simply embrace the american ideal, they lived it. they embodied it. the courage, the hope, and yet the idealism. that fundamental american belief that we can leave this world a little better than before. that's who they were. that's who we are. if we want to truly honor their memory, that's who we must always be. i know that this awful loss,

terrible images of recent days, the picture we are seeing again today have caused some to question this work. and there is no doubt these are difficult days. in moment such as this, so much anger, violence, even the most hopeful among us must wonder. but amid all the images of this week i also think of the libyans who took to the streets with home made signs expressing their gratitude to an american who believed in what we could achieve together. i think of a man with his sign in english, a message he wanted all of us to hear. it said, "chris stevens was a friend to all libyans." chris stevens was a friend. that's the message these four patriots sent. that's the message each of you

sends every day. civilians, military, to people in every corner of the world. america is a friend. that we care not just about our own country and our own interests but about theirs. that even as voices of suspicion and mistrust seek to divide countries and cultures from one another, the united states of america will never retreat from the world. we'll never stop working for the dignity and freedom that every person deserves. whatever their creed. whatever their faith. that's the essence of american leadership. that's the spirit that sets us apart from other nations. this was their work in benghazi, this is the work we'll carry on. to you, their families and

colleagues, to all americans, know this be their sacrifice will never be forgotten. we'll bring to justice those who took them from us. we'll stand fast against the violence our diplomatic missions. we'll continue to do everything in our power to protect americans serving overseas, whether that means increasing security in our diplomatic posts, working with those countries which have an obligation to provide security, and making it clear that justice will come to those who harm americans. most of all, even in our grief, we'll be resolute. we are americans. we hold our head high. knowing that because of these

patriots, because of you, this country that we love will always shine as a light unto the world. greater love hath no man than this ... a man lay down his life for his friends. the flag they served under now carries them home. and god bless the memory of these men who laid down their lives for us all. may god watch over your families and all who loved them. and may god bless these united states of america. >> for our benediction we'll stand together for the playing of the national anthem as we render honor to the nation that these men loved and for which they died.
